Brett's solo just jumps off the CD and right through your speakers. 1st time I ever heard Brett was at a clinic in the late 80's when he was playing with the Nelson boys. Man! 10 years later I got to see Shawn play! WOW! I ended up at the gig about 3 hours before it was to start and got to hear Shawn play onstage in an empty venue. Only 3 people in the place, Shawn, my friend and myself just listening to Shawn play for 45 minutes. Needless to say a humbling exp. I knew at the time I would...
I've come to expect a lot of craziness in Shawn Lane's playing, but 6:35-6:39 baffles me. That absurd hybrid picking lick sounds like something that Guthrie Govan said "...some of it sounds like a printer going mental..."
These solos are so memorable it's nuts!!! I used to play this track on loop as a teenager learning guitar and haven't heard it in over 20 years but it all came back to me :-) :-) :-) big shout out to my cousin Rich for showing me this one back in the day - where ever you may be, hope you're good and well cuz X
SAME! listening after probably 8 years!! I used to try and pick the solos by ear (never got it perfect btw), I dont even play guitar anymore, but makes me get my guitar back
Studied this vamp at Berklee and also at the National Guitar Workshop when they had their sessions. Thanks to Terry Syrek, James Hogan, Chris P, Dave Martone, Chris Those were life changing, and incredibly motivating opportunities. Aside from everything else, this is an incredible example of how much creativity and innovation that a particular guitarist can put into his/her style and how much it can shine though above all the "noise" in the world of creative music!
Great solos, for me the most well done one was Gambale. The way the solo grows up and the scales choice is great. Shawns and Brett solo are great too, truly three great guitar players each one with its characteristics.
I remember going to a freakin Nelson concert in like '91 because my drummer at the time convinced me that there would be a lot of girls there, and there surely were, but there was also Brett Garsed playing with them and his live solo tore my fool head off, and I became a fan and later was lucky enough to take a couple of lessons from him a couple of years later when I got out to LA. Great guy, amazing chops. Shawn.... where does one begin? Frank? Phenomenal. So happy to find this gem on RUclips!
Would be fantastic, if we could see the clips of 'recording sessions' of this amazing album. Sure thing, Mike Varney has it in his archieve. Share with us Mr. Varney!
I picked this album at random during a high school trip to new York city. I was 17, it was my first introduction to this fusion( ?) jazz ambiance. I never felt it was from my time. As a teenager, I had an odd posture by listening to this. Now it sounds very far away, forgotten, hidden in the depth of RUclips.
@@asegal4677 I was talking about Shawn's, but I listenened to Brett's opening lines and they're mental too!! I aso love the very end of Brett's solo. Crazy good notes. So tasty!! Shawn's super fast blues lick always gets me:) peace dude.
@@zaccyo Agreed on all points! On another track from the same album, Hey Tee Bone (I'm sure you know it) Shawn's hyper speed blues licks are on full display.

@@zaccyo I own about 40 Shrapnel and Legato albums and this MVP album is a favorite ... Hadn't heard that playing you linked to. Great playing! He was a bit more in his "West Side Boogie" mode there. Reminds me how many subtlely different shades of blues he can play. So many varieties!
All great solo's but I think one distinction is I believe Shawn Lane could replicate the other guys solos note for note but they'd have difficulty replicating his....But so what, killer stuff
Eu ouvia este som num cd cheio de coisas de Alain Caron e nunca entendi essa pira de som de baixo ,e nunca mais o cara usar kkk simplesmente não é o Caron kkk
6:55 Cliffs of dover lick. Brent Garsed sounds very clean on this but I think Gambale's ability to take a phrase through the key change is better. Lane and Garsed don't play as many motifs, just more burning which to me is less interesting. You can definitely tell who was the most seasoned guitarist on this.
I remember getting this simply because it was a Shrapnel related album, thinking wow this is boring then later on it became the album I had to play for students whenever they said they wanted to learn from me. Basically to say "well I don't really play that good these guys will blow your mind."
Shawn Lane is the greatest rock guitarist of all time. Gambale theoretically has a greater grasp of jazz as that is his foundation. Shawn Lane was truly a virtuoso.
Broadfieldpoint It never fails on youtube; there is always someone stupid and arrogant enough to insult everyone who brings greatness; sometimes the greater the player, the more stupid trolls they seem to attract.
Ok... "Greatest ROCK guitarist¿" Rock? I'm confused because none of these players are rock guitarists. These guys are great guitarist. Yes Shawn Lane is great Frank is too. Mr Allen Holdsworth, may he RIP is THE guitarist so original he started this kind of soloing. Rock??¿? Lmao. Rock inspired sound... That's it!
Anybody else notice the old string noise when he stops playing? I know the strings aren't old but something with the two overdrive's and compression gives that hiss noise that sounds worse than Nails on a chalkboard! At least John Frusciantes od hiss was sexy Brett!
Did anyone recognize that at 4:28 min. the phrase that garsed plays sounds identical to the phrase that greg howe played on his song "button up" starting at 4:01 min. To me that proves that also the pro musicians rip each other off in terms of licks and getting ideas etc. Interesting isn't it?

Everyone speaking about guitars, but damn the bass interlude is so tasty
Shawn's lick from 5:18 - 5:24 is one of those things I could put on repeat forever.
5:45-5:51

@ATXK It is Shawn.
You can always recognize Gambale.. Tasteful soloing!
Brett Garsed musicality and phrasing amazing

I'm a guitarist. I found brett, Lane, and Gambale's solos awesome. But... have you noticed the groovy bass solo prior to theirs ?
Jimmy fukin' Earl, baby yeah!
and all that on that acoustic guitar on the video
Brett’s solo starting is mind blowing! 👌🎶🎸
Gambale delivering one of the most melodic solos ever.
One of the best fusion rhythm sections ever established.
Shawn Lane still amazes me... wow...
Amazing solo ,SHWAN Lane🎸❤️😊
i love gambale`s line during the chord change at 7:58. its a simple lick that sounds perfect in context
BRETT GARSED..

Been listening to this since high school(20 years) and it still melts my face, EVERY FREEKING TIME
Same. And still melting my face in 2024
Gambale's is probably the only one l would go back to, for its memorability but, my word, the technical display here is insane.
R.I.P. Shawn and God bless Memphis Tennessee
Shawn Lane, the Memphis monster.
I listened this back in 2007 and still blowing my mind. 😮

I love Brett Garsed's legato , it's infinite . But I'm still staying with Gambale's solo , what a beast.
His spacing between phrases. So well timed.
I can't understand what kind of musical brain should one have to compose these terrifying solos...Gambale's is my favorite!
They’re improvised, not composed.
Still listening in 2022 music never dies!
Brett Garsed (g - 1st solo), Shawn Lane (g - 2nd solo), Frank Gambale (g - 3rd solo), Mike O'Neill (rhythm g), Freddy Ravel (keyb), Jimmy Earl (b solo) and Joey Heredia (d) in 1991.
In that track Brett rules. Great moment.
I first heard this in high school some 30 years ago. :-)
in this track I love Gambale
Great. I listened for brett, shawn and gambale in the solos!!!!
Omg come on brett u cant start ur solo like that. Damn he really came in LIKE THAT?!!
Always been a fan of Gambale, Garsed, and Shawn Lane, but the only other bassist I've heard that played like that was Stanley Clarke. Wow!
Sounds a lot like Marcus Miller.
The best moment (if that exist) is between 4:22 - 4:34. Thats an history being told
