  • Two decades after Girl with the Pearl Earring, Tracy Chevalier is back with another finely rendered story of women. Refusing to tend endlessly to her grieving mother after the Great War, Violet Speedwell begins a new life among the embroiderers of Winchester Cathedral; a community of supportive women in which she hopes to grow. Chevalier discusses her novel and the power of sewing with Clare Hunter, author of Threads of Life, in this event filmed live at the 2019 Edinburgh International Book Festival.

Two wonderful writers together. What a joy to find this interview. If you have not read these women, please do, because you have a treat in store if you do. 👏👏👏👏👏

Loved this kneeler story. My mother made one for my daughter's school chapel at Perth College in 1980's. I want to go there to visit it. It was a labour of love.

I've just read the book, loved it, as all the other books by Tracy Chevalier, and wondered whether the story of the embroidered cushions was real. I found out it was and ended up with this interview. So interesting, thank you!
