Yes, there is; for better results try a depth map. Addjusting the power & speed have shown to give better results with different combinations of the two.

I don't think either rock is sandstone but the rock with the slight green tint might be limestone

I have lasered thousands of things including tons of rocks andI had the same issues, but made some really great ones, works well on pumpkins and Glass, just depends on how far away object is and height as rocks are not always flat. I purchased a 40W CO2 Laser 5 years ago from Wish for $399, and It worked great.

maybe paint the quarter black before lasering to reduce reflection. I think how quick the heat is dissipated across the quarter may also be a problem though. Time to get a bigger laser.

Using Software that creates a Mosaic of a Picture (ie. Poster Print), it would be possible to print the Brick Ends and create a Wall Picture... or Picture Wall.
The Laser Etching would be very Durable and the Image or Pattern would be very Clear. It would also be possible to Print on other Faces of the Brick to Ensure Proper Placement.
Given the Accuracy and Potential Speed of the Etching Laser, you could Create 'Time Bricks' Printed with Information that could Possibly be Recovered some Day in the Future.

"High powered laser" and then "10 watts".
I think you need to realign your world view a bit. Even a standard candlestick is around 80 watts, and even a tealight delivers 30+.
Power density will help do some incredible stuff, but "power" will do more work.

@@PattheMovies That being said, a diode laser that fits in a pocket capable of marking rock is quite fantastic. Safety squints ON!
