      The best part about being a martial artist is that you get to say the same thing to these sort of questions. :)
      (As a fencer, I once had the glorious opportunity to say, "Indeed: I once stabbed him in the face" when asked if I knew a mutual friend. The response was priceless.)

      When eve said her real name she said wrex's and wreav's last/ family/ clan name.... Does that mean they're cousins or siblings or am I getting that confused with clan instead of family

    Hrm, Padok's personality is actually really solid, he's a surprisingly good character. Not as amazing as Mordin's quirky personality, but he's makes a much better substitute than I was expecting. Also nice to see he says some unique stuff that Mordin never says due to having his own personality quips, never knew Wrex was named for a belch.

      It's actually quite easy. During my first, blind ME2 run, he died in Collector Base and it surprised me greatly.I didn't know, if I take Garrus and Grunt, it lowers defender's power so the most 'fragile' members may die: first Mordin. then Tali.

      +TeenyOwlet After saving the whole crew, and my human doctor told me that she didn't have the strength to fight, it didn't make any sense, to send anyone other than a combative medic to escort them back to the ship. While the main combatants had been told, and agreed to a suicide mission, it's only right, to give the support crew their best chance of survival.

    For those who need convincing that Wiks is a decent character - 18:19
    I can't 'not' giggle every time I see this. Watching it now seeing as Mordin was my favourite character in ME2, so he always survived and filled this spot in ME3. Padok is definitely a solid replacement.

    • @KHMDarkness
      @KHMDarkness 10 лет назад +10

      ROFL Well... same here, honestly. I had all of my crew survive the mission in ME2 (Legion with hacking, Garrus with leading every time, Samara with the barrier, and bringing with me the weakest characters to the final boss) so I have to watch videos to see what happens. Turns out, if Garrus and Tali die on the suicide mission on ME2, then no one replaces them on your squad, or even in the game. Which really sucks... the game already has a small number of people to fight with you, while ME2 had 13 I think, including the DLC characters, and Legion would be the one you would place with the least if you don't want any of your normal crew, outside of your squad, to die in the Collector Base.
      Well, I know one thing that will cheer me up!
      *Watches **18:19** again.*
      Yep, feeling better! :P

    • @RopeDrink
      @RopeDrink 10 лет назад +11

      KHMDarkness
      Thing you need to remember is that these 'replacement' characters are for story arc - Genophage, Quarian/Geth etc and not a party replacement. Letting actual ME3 playable crew die at any point in the series means your punishment is, quite simply, not having them anymore - Whereas the story still needs to continue and Bio decided not to use the main characters primarily for that purpose, which makes sense given there's so many characters, which means there'd have to be so many outcomes.

    • @JamesTobiasStewart
      @JamesTobiasStewart 3 месяца назад +1

      @@lukedeakin7124I'd agree and argue that he is by a considerable margin. For one thing, I'm pretty sure he's the only Substitute who can still give the Golden Ending to his scenario. If he has all the right pieces to work with, then he can save Eve and cure the Genophage successfully, just like Mordin does.
      Meanwhile if you get to Rannoch and you are dealing with the Geth VI or Shala'Raan (in lieu of Tali that is) then peace is impossible, you are gonna have to choose a species to save and let the other die. Similarly Wreav IS going to restart the Krogan Rebellions and the best you can get is Eve being around to oppose him.
      On the more minor substitutions; Urdnot Dagg, Jason Prangley and Kirrahe will all die trying to fill Grunt, Jack and Thane's respective shoes (the last requiring you to have kept Kirrahe alive prior to this and costs you a potential asset later on).

    Actually,Padok makes mention of Mordin's real thoughts on his work. Padok himselfturned religious after the work, realizing he needed to stop playing god and let life move at his own pace rather than forced down a path. He mentions Mordin,however, was struck with guilt and was never the same. The reason Mordin constantly defends himself is because he's trying to convince himself that he didn't dosomething horrible, he's deceiving himself basically.

Don't get me wrong, Mordin was awesome and all but I like the insight Wiks brings to the table, his view point on life and why believes in what he doing as well as the conversations he has with Eve/Bakura on the name he gave her which we never got with Mordin as he was too busy being quirky. The conversations with Shepard also had me reading into it. Even his last conversation to Shepard was deep.
    Shepard: "Padok wait! This is a one way trip."
    Padok: "It has been since the day I met Eve.
    Padok: "Some souls die in battle. Some die in their sleep. And some die for no reason at all. This.. is my chance to die for what I believe."

    I feel like the writers who worked on Salarian characters in Mass Effect had a particular fascination for a species that has a shorter lifespan than humans. That combined with their unique design, peculiar choice in vocalization and the subterfuge the organization STG was made with the intent to fight wars stealthily instead of through force like the Turians or Advancement like Asari. Padok Wiks seems to be a fantastic showcase of how, even with Mordin's absence, you can have a compelling and fascinating character w/o the best character of ME2; him and Kirrahe are great Salarians who aren't Mordin.
    I regret not trying out Padok's route myself, but Mordin's interactions are golden enough to excuse that decision. Still, thanks for uploading these clips together ^^

    Odd how out of all the arguably-lackluster placeholder characters in ME3, Mordin's alternate was the only one I'd actually consider a worthwhile addition. Then again, that might just be because he see more of him then we did the others, but Padok felt like had enough characterization to be a pseudo-squadmate in and of himself.

    As far as "substitutes" go, there are two extremes: "We are Not" Legion on one end and Padok on the other. Padok is the "really solid on their own and a respectable replacement for the original" end of that spectrum :P. I'm honestly tempted to do a run where Mordin dies at the end of ME2 just so I can get this guy. Not only is his speech pattern much more bearable in my opinion, his outlook on the role of Salarians on the galactic stage is INCREDIBLY interesting and refreshing. Not to mention his views on evolution. I very much DON'T agree with them, and that makes me all the willing to get him.

    • @OTimeMasterXO
      @OTimeMasterXO 10 лет назад +6

      Has to be said though, 'Not-Legion' was heartbreaking to me. The fact that it looked like Legion completely took me in and I expected there to be a subtle arc for the character. The fact that there wasn't and I was forced to kill it just broke my heart, especially after seeing the Geth origins.

    • @mysterioso2006
      @mysterioso2006 10 лет назад +8

      Oh absolutely! I really like what they did with Not-Legion's writing, and it is tragic as all hell. It's just that Legion is my favorite character in the entire franchise, so I'm incredibly biased here.

    • @gibberconfirm166
      @gibberconfirm166 9 лет назад

      mysterioso2006 In ME2 Legion is just "Geth," though, I'm honestly still not sure what they thought they were doing in ME3. Legion is not an individual, he's just "Geth." You never encountered actual "Geth" previously because you only fought heretics, real Geth isolated themselves.

  • @R.DeMora

    It is amazing to note the contrasts and similarities between Mordin and Wiks; both passionate scientists and thinkers with deep understandings and disagreements. In ME2 Shepard notes certain religious tones in Mordin's words at some point, so it is reasonable to assume such channels of thought imprinted on Mordin FROM Wiks. Amazing, whoever wrote Padok's character really knew what they where doing. Those people deserve a raise!

  • @halogent8294

    I actually think Wrex's line about Padok's death is so much more powerful. When Mordin dies he jokes he'll name a kid after him. Which is like a huge deal for Krogan don't get me wrong. But the first thing he thinks about is regretting not being able to say he was wrong about Padok. That's powerful

    The krogan seem to be the one race in Mass Effect that can draw attention to gender roles without any suggestions that one is superior to the other. While it’s predominately males that fight battles, interact with other races, and get screen time, any time females are brought up in conversation, they’re spoken of with reverence. As proud as the males are, none of them will value anything in their lives more than women and children. As a result, female krogan heavily influence krogan traditions and politics. Even in playthroughs with Wrex dead and Wreav leading the krogan, Bakara has no problem outwardly disagreeing with him and resisting his advances. You get the sense that no matter what the males think/do on their own, the krogan race doesn’t advance unless both genders cooperate. That of course is true for any race, but the krogan seem to depict this in the strongest way.

    My first playthrough Mordin died because I didn't understand the way the final defense worked in ME2. Padok was interesting to speak to though I missed Mordin immensely. It would've been awesome to see these two working together in 3 since they agree so fully on the genophage needing to be cured, even if the reasons are different. I also feel like that could've been a way to make another tuchanka ending. If Mordin lives, him and Padok work together and find a cure. If it's just Padok, he's unable to get an effective cure.
