The game that made Magnus Carlsen the World Rapid Champion 2019

  • Usually when it is the championship game, you often see players slightly tensed or nervous. But you can see how Magnus Carlsen plays each and every move in this game with great confidence against Hikaru Nakamura. He has a full point lead over the field and instead of him offering a draw, it was Nakamura who had to ask for the half point.
After becoming the World Rapid Champion we show you the after-moments of Carlsen's victory, a glimpse from the interview after becoming the champion and the presentation ceremony at the end!

That's an excellent handshake round from both of them. Hikaru wanted to surprise Carlsen with an over-the-shoulder walk-up into a smooth hand delivery with the straight arm. Carlsen countered quickly with his classic underhanded pull up. Both executed a clean grab, shake, and release. This'll be a tough one for the judges. The two played chess afterwards.

So Magnus just gives his hand to accept it because a draw was enough for him to be the World Champion

For everyone asking why it's a draw the only way either player can push for advantage is by swapping the file their rooks occupy Carlsen needs his rookb on the F file and Nakamura needs his rookf on B file. This results in after queen a1 rookb8 rookb1 rookb5 rookf1 they will repeat this 3 times and draw by 3 fold repetition. They both know this and skip that part and just agree to the draw immediately. if after rook b1 Carlsen ignores this and plays rookf8 Nakamura can infiltrate his position via c3 then a5 (the sqaure rookb5 was protecting) with the queen followed by rookb6 followed by the c4 knight this is bad for black, forcing Carlsen to go back to b5 which forces Nakamura to go back to rookf1. *edit extension if anyone was wondering why Nakamura doesn't take on b5 Carlsen will undouble his C pawn push and sac it to gain a past Apawn this is winning for black and he can't push d4 as this would result in everything getting traded then Nakamura would be in an end game with Magnus Carlsen! who has 2 bishops to 0 with play both sides of the board. You have to be one serious wackadoodle to want to play that out.

Watching this video makes me miss high school days. Just playing some open tournaments in different cities, meeting different kind of players that are usually very kind. But what I miss most is the sound of the venue, everyone is so disciplined and quite to the point that you could only hear the air conditioner blowing some chills to you HAHA. I really thank chess for making my life really exciting and wonderful ❤.

That's really cool actually. I had some chess in my childhood but it was just that I took a class at a rec center in 3rd grade for a couple months. But I'm coming back to it now and really want to sit down and git gud so I can play in community events with people.

Can someone explain what role the clock plays? What happens at the end to the player who took more total time up with their turns?
