  • The video discusses strategies for effectively reading and understanding research articles. It emphasizes that articles should not be read sequentially like novels, but rather approached based on the reader's purpose. The structure of a typical research article is outlined, including introduction, literature review, data and methods, results, discussion, and conclusions. The video explains the concept of the "master's thesis wave," which describes how the level of abstraction changes throughout an article.
The importance of understanding both the macro and micro structure of articles is highlighted. At the macro level, readers should focus on key sections like the introduction, discussion, and conclusions to grasp the main ideas quickly. It also emphasizes the importance of identifying key concepts, theories, and causal relationships within the article. By using these strategies, readers can more efficiently and effectively extract the main ideas and arguments presented in research articles.

Well done Mikko. Another interesting video. I have subscribed and have been following you. I just started my first year in the ph.d program. Do you have any tips on organizing literature for a literature review? Also, can you do a video on how to do a summary of an article?

Unfortunately I do not have anything on literature reviews. It really depends on the kind of review that you are writing. This video was for master students who struggle in reading articles and I thought I would help them a bit by telling how I do it.
