    Ultramagnetic MC's
Kool Keith, Ced Gee, DJ Moe Love, TR Love, Tim Dog
One particular album birthed an unhealthy amount of studio out-takes, elusive and unreleased cuts, Ultramagnetic MC’s Funk Your Head Up. In the UK, from April 1990, pioneering DJ Tim Westwood was broadcasting a handful of demo versions of tracks from this LP on his iconic London based Capital Rap Show, straight from tape, that never saw the light of day. These cuts are true classics to those that tuned in during the 2 year period before the albums full release in 1992, because they were BANGERS. For some reason, the versions of tracks like Bust The Facts, Ya Not That Large and Message From The Boss that were aired on Capital Radio during this period never received official releases, they were re-programmed by Ced-Gee, the rest of Ultra and a Danish producer by the name of Phase 5, and as a comparison, they just did’nt cut the mustard. They had the shit bootlegged & re-pressed out them in later years by Tuff City Records and others, but one cut, MC Champion with a verse from an unknown up until that point, Brother James never even got the booty treatment. This verse was seemingly faded out on every radio recording that was made, but evidently not all of them, this is one of the reasons why RRR is in operation, to continue to dig, unearth and to share these gems. For the record, it remained on Tim Westwoods NME Future Rap Chart for weeks on end, ramping up the excitement in prep for the full release.
Until June this year the Brother James verse was’nt even out there. But it’s almost 2014, and we can all finally enjoy the full grainy version that until RUclips uploader Madscience81 kindly shared, might’ve been buried forever if it was’nt for their generosity, so big shouts to him/ her, and to Beatlover for bringing it to our attention. To anyone that held onto a copy and shouted from rooftops that they were sitting on it but did’nt wanna play, go back to the duck pond. Brother James was an MC that recorded with a group by the name of Call Us What You Want, and was reportedly dropped from the finished release for legislative reasons but very little information about him or them is available. Kool Keith admitted to Angus Batey last year that he was ‘so pissed off that that energy of production was lost’ on F.Y.H.U. and that is unquestionable, but listening back to James droppin’ rhymes about typical Ultra subject matter like pterodactyls, highlights how he could’ve become another Nasty Nas, in the same way as Nas blessed us on Live At The BBQ. We’re fortunate to even have this lost verse in the first instance.
RRR have blatantly grabbed the Madscience version and hastily tacked it onto the highest quality available of the original demo, we’ve got no idea if the version of the verse is from a Westwood show or not, but who cares, it’s finally here, the full version of MC Champion, with the ENTIRE verse by Brother James in all its hissy glory. Now all we need is for the original demo cassette to find its way into the hands of a label like DWG, Slice of Spice or one of the handful of others that take the care and attention to bring this kinda jewel back to peoples record players.
Trumungous propers go out to Dynomite from Daily Diggers, to Beatlover and Madscience81 for bringin this to our ears for the first time in over 23 years.

the meddling with funk ya head up proves the people in charge ruined what should of been a great followup to critical beatdown. Keith although still evolving on the mic hadn't reached that pinnacle of being the ruling eccentric of hip hop yet and Ced Gee was stellar on the production. It's flaming!

We in here dropping freestyle rhymes like MC Champions
    So Keith, take it away
    [Kool Keith]
    Power compactor, brain distractor
Dropping a bomb right in your anal connector
    Sector, vector, the lyric inspector
    X-Ray vision, power perfector
    Lecktor, Megator, Igor
Ah yes yes y'all, and you don't stop
The rhythm the drop the hit the top to make ya swing or pop
As I flow, pick up the micro-
    Phone get hypotension is original
Lyrical miracle, back to attack one
Black one, white one, green one or blue one
Colorful street rhymes, I'm back to do one
Or two of you, three of you, or four of you
Five or six or seven, eleven of you
Wack MCs get back in the last line
And wait on the mic, you think I'm ready to pass mine
Up in the roach hand, with clever ability
I know when to sting a brain, just like I'm a killer bee
Hitting em hard with the rhyme as the flame grow
Hardcore, softcore, and even the rainbow
    Polka-dot MC's, African, Indian
    Spanish-American, mixed with Panamanian
    Arabian Nubian, speaking Siberian
    Japanese, Chinese, and regular MCs
    Preachers, teachers, and negative creatures
I roll and kick a rhyme, you grab your mic back
Sidewind and rattle like a snake I strike back
I chew your brain and, the monkey behind you
Your company management, the dummy who signed you
To pick up the slack but the hype ain't selling many
Records and tapes cause your rap ain't telling any
    Metaphor phases, think that amazes
Me, the next man, no biter but innovator
With lyrical instinct, you look like a duplicator
Bite my style, nibbling on the big jock
With rhymes so tight, they keep your brain in a headlock
Count the one two three four five
I'm like The Bushwhackers tag-teaming your dome
    I'm just a champion
    [Ced Gee]
Ah yeah, yo Keith, bust this
I got some freestyle rhymes too
I'mma warm up, then I'mma get deep
    Bust it, check this out
    Yo, poetic genius, kicking metaphor
Ced Gee is the big boss, making it better for
A pile of them, MCs again, I'm ragging them
    So listen up my friend
I'm rapping to manifest, people so blind I guess
Type of hype I select, when I rap come correct
My mic is on, and it's loaded, and it's lethal
Here's a dose, a taste of my potential
My super menu winds you bends you sends you
To watch a brother like me, continue
Out on the warpath, flashback, sit back
Kick back with that, dope rap attack
Those that can't rap, with that weak rap
Need to get back, and just to add to that
Fact, with words from the knowledge tip
My rhymes are swift, I have the gift
Like hocus-pocus, Ced Gee, and I'm still on
My mic is loaded with rhymes that flame on
Now you know just what I am creating
We call it mega funk, a plan stating
I'm verbally passing, rhymes are outlasting
Waxing and smashing and kicking more ass and
With intensity, Ced Gee has got to be
Schooling the wannabes, rappers who try to be
    Like me, C-E-D
To flow on the mic and show no mercy
    I'm a champion, I'm undefeated
My rep is strong, no hype is ever needed
To grow and grow, to grow and grow
To grow and grow, and grow and grow
To grow and grow, and grow and grow
    Rap taller than Buckwheat's afro
    I'm a champion

@Stuart Dooley - highfived Maybe ya meant that Ced wasnt happy about the length of time theyd been getting aired, rather than them 'being played' period ? I guess an artist wants promotion, then it's understandable that theyd get hacked off if an exclusive track was being played over and over. There must be a fine line, when promotion turns into a song/ tracks gettin rinsed. That's a fair call as it goes.
