+AlbostyleG I had actually written this comment before I finished the video, omg that input lag. I'm waiting on the Pc version myself but hopefully people on PS4 get these issues fixed.
I have only just got the PS4 version and even before seeing this comparison I didn't think the next gen Tomb Raider was that much of a step up graphically from the last one I played on the PS3. The lighting is the biggest thing and the rest extremely minor graphical improvements. When you consider one version is running on a so say next generation hardware the differences are laughable really.
Could you do a ps3/360 evil within video? It would certainly be interesting :) Those version may have worse graphics, but the game is fully intact, and i can say that the ps3 version works absolutely fine in the fps section, for 10 year old hardware :D The biggest downsides for me are pop in and loading
So basically this game was held back and not developed to it's full potential so it could run decent on the Xbox 360 or the X1 is really not that big of a leap over the 360 no way this game should be that close in comparison in MY OPINION
+therealhard8times If a previous gen game is not optimized, people complain. When it is very well optimized, people complain. Really no way to satisfy the gaming community eh? And yea I know its just your opinion but still...
This game is arguably one of the best looking games on PS4 and Xbox One. I'm a fan of your channel but I think you've got this wrong. A separate team ported it over to 360. The Xbox One version looks far superior.
This also shows another thing - that the dx9/10 pc hardware was retired before its time. As for the game itself, rise of the tomb raider is definitely the best tr game, and the lara model itself is made better than in the newer continuation of the franchise.
The input lag may be an engine problem as the original 2013 tomb raider also have a heavy input lag. The problem is solved when you play at 60 fps on PC but consoles are stuck with it... PC version actually have more input lag at 30 fps than consoles btw.
i just completed the 360 version and the only problem i had was some areas wouldn't load correctly like the geo vally and lara would sometimes not use her glow sticks correctly , other than that its an amazing game on 360 and a cheaper alternative
Well. This is where consoles win big time. You just put in the game and play. On a TEN YEAR OLD hardware. And it is still absolutely playable. Please don't reply that you can do it on PC... because you can't. It wont even load on a 2005 system. (Remember for example 1GB of RAM was very awesome back than.)
So what? Nobody playing on PC keep it with 10 years old hardware, oh and yeah how much 360 did you pay since it's on the market? Every friends i know had to get at least 2 or 3 360 because if you were playing all day after 4 years or so it was dead
Lol yes you can play on really old hardware. And I agree about the multiple consoles. Went through 3 PS3 during the generation. I prefer PC to consoles. My hardware in my PC right now could last for years, but I choose to upgrade it often. That flexibility helps a lot.
+Péter Sági they would had to make DirectX 9 version of the game so it could run on 2005 PCs. But why, when less than 1% people who would buy this game have 10 years old PC. And there are no optimized drivers for 10 year GPUs - again, because no one uses 2005 PC anymore. Current $100 laptops are faster than that.
+wooooowwe1 I can see your point, but I never bought more than 1 PS3, which I still play to this day. (If you want to consider hardware amortization, its also a factor on PC) Also: I live in an Eastern-EU country where most people can't afford to spend more than a few hundred bucks for 5-6 years in gaming. But I would probably choose console anyway because of the killer price/perfmance/lifespan ratio and exklusives.
Bought the game on Xbox 360 when it released because I was interested in how it would look and perform. Honest opinion? I am very satisfied! Great game with great looks and performance on the aging console. But my question to anyone who bought it... is the Season Pass worth it, content-wise?
This really shows how ridiculously talented Nixxes are. They ported Tomb Raider and Human Revolution to PC both of which were easily the best versions of their respective games and didn't feel like ports at all. And now they port Rise of the Tomb Raider to weaker hardware for once and still manage to improve on it in some ways. I wish other games' ports like Batman Arkham Knight's PC version would have been outsourced to Nixxes too.
+DigitalFoundry Please start uploading these videos in 4K. Possibly 1080p per screen for those gfx card comparisons you do, that would really help. Also you could upload console comparison videos to youtube in 2K (1080p per screen in split screen). Cheers!
It would be interesting if you did a side-by-side comparison of all three of the tomb raider and reboot games in contrast to the improvements or changes to the graphics to the effects directly I think it would make for an interesting video and show some of the technical aspects of some of these passed games in comparison to the upcoming release.
I found this video very helpful with deciding whether I would wait for ps4 or just buy the 360 version. 360 seems completely fine for what I'm looking for. Thanks DF.
Having previously played the PS4 and PC versions of this game i recently picked up a copy on 360 which i am currently playing. Im really impressed with how it looks and plays.
Don't see why it's so amazing that it ported well to 360. It is, after all, essentially the same as the Tomb Raider reboot, same engine etc. (albeit with a few revisions).. And that game ran just fine on 360 and PS3...
In the final parts of the adventure or in secondary areas the care to detailis is very lacking, the rendering distance of the objects is very evident and objects lose details a few meters away, but the framerate remains stable at 30 FPS. I wonder if they could sacrifice a few frames for better graphic detail. Overall the 2013 chapter is visually richer and more refined, even if it presents extremely rough character models.
Wow I am actually impressed how good rise of the tomb raider actually looks on Xbox 360 I have no idea why I never bothered pre-ordering tomb raider 2013 or rise of the tomb raider for the 360 instead I own the entire tomb raider reboot trilogy for Xbox One and PS4 for my first playthrough then I finally upgraded to the Series X and PS5 I decided to do a second playthrough and the difference is seriously massive not only they look better but they perform better at a locked 60 FPS 😍 but I still want to play the 360 version of tomb raider 2013 and rise of the tomb raider it's pretty freaking stupid rise of the tomb raider is not on PS3 considering tomb raider 2013 is available on PS3 freaking damn Microsoft spent so much money in order to keep rise of the tomb raider 360 exclusive.
@@thefinalroman I'm already aware of that but that has nothing to do with why rise of the tomb raider was never released on PS3 because it was Microsoft that was willing to spend so much unnecessary amount of money to make rise of the tomb raider Xbox 360 as a timed exclusive and because of that PS3 players were left with tomb raider 2013 and never had the chance to experience rise of the tomb raider and most of them refused to buy a Xbox 360 console just to play rise of the tomb raider this is why I do not stick to one platform I am and always will be a multiplatform gamer so I was able to enjoy rise of the tomb raider on 360 and I had an absolute blast square enix was an A-hole for taking up that deal 🤝 and completely screwed PS3 players who owned tomb raider 2013 they were forced to wait for the PS4 version to be released so Crystal Dynamics wanted to make up for abandoning PS3 players so they added some extra features on rise of the tomb raider definitive edition on PS4 it came with every DLC ever released Plus exclusive missions exclusive content and PSVR missions it was The ultimate Way of square enix apologizing to PS3 players who were left out in the dust
@@thefinalroman You're right That is true The 360 version of rise of the tomb raider only got one DLC But on PC they pretty much received every DLC ever released since 2013 same thing happened with tomb raider 2013 on 360 and PS3 They had very few DLC meanwhile on PC they got everything else So in reality Crystal Dynamics kind of screwed 360 and PS3 owners But I seriously doubt 360 and PS3 owners even cared about the DLC the main story had plenty of content to keep yourself entertained for several days It took me a while to finish tomb raider 2013 and rise of the tomb raider on 360 I had fun however I believe it's because they couldn't make it work on 360 or PS3 due to the limited power of the 360/ PS3 GPU but when Xbox One / PS4 was released in 2013 they were able to put every DLC in one package which we all know it as the definitive edition from the PC version and they were able to massively improve the graphics on Xbox One / PS4 with Ultra photo realistic graphics I was seriously impressed with their technical achievement It's even better on the Series XS and PS5 tomb raider 2013 runs at 1080p 60 on both Series XS and PS5 rise of the tomb raider runs at 4K 60 on Series X and PS5 the Series S version runs at 1080p 60 Shadow of the tomb raider is also 4K60 on Series X and PS5 But on Series S it's 1080p60 So I'd say Crystal Dynamics did a masterful job 😍👍
*I played the game on 360 and it was FANTASTIC! Incredible sequel where I spent 50-60 hours on it easy.* *A technical bug even allowed me to download the dlc (Baba Yaga was the best one) and 4 outfits for the best price of FREE just like the game itself as it was a loan from my local library! I was such a lucky and spoiled gamer.*
Unfortunately PS3 does not support FXAA however it does support 2x TSAA which is quite similar to FXAA but it's not widely used on PS3 for some stupid reason
@@pawegeryk898 It has nothing to do with them being lazy coding their games You dumb fuck The only reason why some third party PS3 games looked worse is because they were unfamiliar with the 32-bit cell processor It was a true nightmare towards game developers So all they really did was they made their games first on 360 then copied the game to the PS3 version and lowered the resolution between 480p and 720p meanwhile most third-party 360 games looked so much better because it was much easier to develop games on 360 Which is thanks to directX OS meanwhile PS3 used its own complicated proprietary OS And it was extremely limited to third-party game developers 🤦
I'm sorry, but RUclips makes the 360 version look better than it actually is. I should know considering I've played it. It still a great port, but for the most part it just looks like 2013 reboots graphics. There's tons of aliasing on the 360 version. It doesn't feel as alive compared to Xbox One version.
- mIcKyByRnE - no they aren't, they never said that. They said that it performs and looks just like the 2013 tomb raider, which is surprising because most games coming out for 360/ps3 now look worse than actual games developed with those platforms in mind. Take cod blops3 for example. The 360 version looks WORSE than any other cod game on the 360. They developed it with the current gen consoles in mind, and when it came to porting it to older hardware they just removed so much and released it, no effort went into it.
I must say i am impressed with the 360 version of the game! But it makes the question, did the developers make the game with limitations from last gen? I think so...
+Vincenzo Tassone (MasterVideoGamers) yes that's why we had to pay like € 499 when it was released. We only paid € 399. They saved on CPU cost i guess instead putting a decent cpu that would last an other 5 year. But hey they thought gamers won't pay this much so lets give some hardware that is a little better than the previous. The sales weren't good when ps3 was released for the price of €599 while xbox360 only €499. That's why MS did better. Later PS3 did get the pricecut. So I guess they didn't want to re-experience the same thing so that's why we got a cheaper console which will only last like few years. A big difference. I'd say blame the gamers for demanding lower prices for a console and voila we got what we wanted
+mrdarku80 exactly! You know i wouldn't mind to pay a bit more, but this gen of consoles is a turn off. I'll stick to PC gaming while I wait for a proper next gen console. And lets be honest a lot of games aren't even worth to get the console. In the past I just had to get the console, but now no need
Honestly, this is why Nintendo thought they could bet on the Wii U's Xbox 360+ level hardware. With work, almost all current gen titles could function well on the Wii U, just as this ambitious current gen title functions well on Xbox 360. What they did not count on was that gamers would move so quickly to the new hardware and their own abysmal marketing and sluggish game release calendar would make their platform unattractive. Finally, the Wii U severally lacked a competent online system at launch, which is a deal breaker for many third party games.
@@YCStudios_greece PS3 is very powerful, maybe even more than X360, it could have done this game perfectly. It was hard to program for because of the weird architecture and some ports don't run smoothly because the programmers used only the main CPU and didn't know how to use the rest of the resources, but a capable team that knows how to extract 100% of the power of the system, can don wonders with it.
I'm actually pretty damn impressed. I have a PS4 so I'll have to wait a year to get this game (unless I somehow come into a lot of extra money to buy an Xbox One). I do have a 360 though.... might actually pick this up after all if I can't stand the wait. Nice to see that someone actually cared about this.
It looks utterly amazing for running on something as old as an Xbox 360. The input lag issue BLOWS my mind. What a horrible situation. Do you want it to look good but not play well, or know full well that the visuals are hindered but feel good? I'd rather have controls but I hate the idea of knowing a better visual experience is out there.
They did such great shit in the Xbox 360 version! that the 2013 tomb raider graphics were far more detailed than the new one. For it seems that a pack of texture is missing, the textures are totally blurred and the contrast of the shadows and lights disappeared completely. Honestly, that shit came out of this tomb raider
This game looks incredible on 360, all things considered. When last-gen consoles can still produce these images, it makes me wonder if the current gen couldve waited a few years before coming out.
Xbox 360 still looks brilliant considering its limitations, I have a series x and am wondering if I can play the Xbox 360 version as opposed to the Xbox one version that would be trippy, will just have to go through my collection to find it lol
Unfortunately you cannot play tomb raider reboot or rise of the tomb raider Xbox 360 version on Xbox One or Xbox Series XS instead you actually need a Xbox 360 console in order to play them it's pretty stupid if you ask me but they want people to play the Xbox One version or PS4 version on your Series XS or PS5 you need a PS3 console if you want to play the PS3 version
I get curious as to how the game looks ever since the One games have been released. Ever since owning a One, I turned my back against the 360 as far as collecting newer games that would be significantly better on the newer platform. However I do like to see a comparisons between the 2 which I'm glad to say this video covered very well. I find it astonishing how much has been pushed on the 360 to nearly match the One's graphical area. The 360 version of RofTR completely blows the Beenox's ported version of BO3 away in comparison. It's been an awesome 10years of playing on the 360, even though I've only been apart of it for 8yrs.
What keeps confusing me is developers releasing remasters of games at 60 fps on the new consoles then releasing the sequals at 30fps.. Looking at the upcoming Gears 4... Halo was the only one to keep consistency, this is why I stay on PC.
A console at the end of its life cycle will always be my choice. There's something about playing a well optimised game in last gen ,like you feel not a single CPU cycle goes to waste. Very satisfying.
I played gears of war 3 on xbone and the xbone controller is not consistent. when I move with the controller the character moves farther away so I can't play well on xboxone. when I aim and move i always miss my target.
I think you might need to update the controller firmware.. it needs to be done manually. There is a bit of input lag but I haven't really noticed it until you pointed it out. I understand why you demonstrated it at 1/4 time but you should have done a test at normal speed as well.
+NYGamer Seriously, don't listen to Digital Foundry. I have the 360 version and it pretty much the same as the 2013 graphics, but Lara just looks better. It has really bad frame rate issues anytime, anywhere. It's a great port, but the difference is significant.
***** Well, actually I disagree. I think a cave can be very windy, especially if it has more than an exit. Small places with 2 or more exits, are usually very windy. The problem of the no tress fx version, is that the pony tail has a little viagra effect xD
xbox 360 user here. i have completed this game and i just want to let you all know that there is a specific problem with the old gen versuon not mentioned here.bit seems that in many cases and in the final region in particular nixxes chose to turn ambient occlusion off to save performance. in these cases the gap in the graphics between the lse consoles becomes truly apparent. i dont know of its a bug or it switches off intentionally but it ruins the mood.

+therealhard8times so true. Its hard to tell the difference and they both run at the same frame rate.
+therealhard8times If a previous gen game is not optimized, people complain. When it is very well optimized, people complain. Really no way to satisfy the gaming community eh? And yea I know its just your opinion but still...
they are even running on different engines to Not be Held back but whatever you want to hear hard8
+therealhard8times It's not held back on Xbox One. A different team done a great port for the Xbox 360.
This game is arguably one of the best looking games on PS4 and Xbox One. I'm a fan of your channel but I think you've got this wrong. A separate team ported it over to 360. The Xbox One version looks far superior.
Nearly 10 years have passed and this 360 game looks better than a lot of modern games do today
Runs at more acceptable resolution too lol. Alone in the Dark runs at 454p as a lower bound on Series S, damn crazy.
So would a port like this be possible on Switch?
Wow, I'm impressed. Good job Nixxes. More reason too sue WB for Shadow of Mordor on 360 and PS3.
I'm picking up my 360 copy on Monday! Can't wait!
It looks fantastic for the 360. I own a Playstation 4 and have pre-ordered this game, but I can't deny how good it looks on XO and X360!
dude, play it on the 360...
its almost unplayble on PS4,Bad bad port!
watch?v=QOuEE03DYzY
Im stunned at how good it looks on 360
Psx , Snes , Gameboy and Xbox 360 are the best maxed out consoles in history , developers made amazing things when they were on their last breath.
I can see that they've put a lot of effort to make it look amazing on both consoles. Great job! It's my favorite game of the year. :)
XO is a console? I swear my old TMNT movie cassettes worked on it last time I checked
Xbox 360 version looks awesome still. Considering the tech and how old it is!
Wow, John sounds so different to 2024 John. He sounds so much younger here and with a more pronounced American accent.
Seriously impressive with crystal dynamics for making the game on the 360! 10 years is ancient for hardware age
Bought the game on Xbox 360 when it released because I was interested in how it would look and perform. Honest opinion? I am very satisfied! Great game with great looks and performance on the aging console. But my question to anyone who bought it... is the Season Pass worth it, content-wise?
Excellent break down of the differences between the two. Thanks for the info.
They are still doing a great job with their recent PC ports. Truly one of the most talented studio out there.
+DigitalFoundry
Please start uploading these videos in 4K.
The XO version just makes me more excited for the PC version! :D
I found this video very helpful with deciding whether I would wait for ps4 or just buy the 360 version. 360 seems completely fine for what I'm looking for. Thanks DF.
This port needs more talking about, what a bunch of wizards.
Having previously played the PS4 and PC versions of this game i recently picked up a copy on 360 which i am currently playing. Im really impressed with how it looks and plays.
The 360 got an update, that made it run a little better, & wind was added. I think it's been awhile.
Cant believe they managed to run this on 360. Wow!
I'm surprised/shocked that the old 360 version looks as good as it does.
Sony dumped the Ps3 in 2014
@@thefinalroman I'm already aware of that but that has nothing to do with why rise of the tomb raider was never released on PS3 because it was Microsoft that was willing to spend so much unnecessary amount of money to make rise of the tomb raider Xbox 360 as a timed exclusive and because of that PS3 players were left with tomb raider 2013 and never had the chance to experience rise of the tomb raider and most of them refused to buy a Xbox 360 console just to play rise of the tomb raider this is why I do not stick to one platform I am and always will be a multiplatform gamer so I was able to enjoy rise of the tomb raider on 360 and I had an absolute blast square enix was an A-hole for taking up that deal 🤝 and completely screwed PS3 players who owned tomb raider 2013 they were forced to wait for the PS4 version to be released so Crystal Dynamics wanted to make up for abandoning PS3 players so they added some extra features on rise of the tomb raider definitive edition on PS4 it came with every DLC ever released Plus exclusive missions exclusive content and PSVR missions it was The ultimate Way of square enix apologizing to PS3 players who were left out in the dust
@@HeyCMDR1991YT Xbox 360 also got screwed. The Cold Darkness DLC was the only one they put on 360. Everything else was Pc or Next gen.
This proves that the 7th gen consoles are much better than today's consoles.
+Ariel Jersey Jr Amen, more games, more originality, that's why I'll never get rid of it. :)
@Ariel
Come here Umaru-Chan! >:)
Nick Motsarsky I doubt the world will last that long lol. We'll see I guess :-)
***** Lmao. xD
This is Illya btw just in a Umaru hoodie.
Ariel Jersey Jr
Lol I got it all wrong xDD
My gawd, I thought it was UMR all along.
This is how you make a port of a current gen game to an old gen console.
I will grab this in the 360 store, on the last supersale round ever.
The 360 store is closing down 😕
*I played the game on 360 and it was FANTASTIC! Incredible sequel where I spent 50-60 hours on it easy.*
*A technical bug even allowed me to download the dlc (Baba Yaga was the best one) and 4 outfits for the best price of FREE just like the game itself as it was a loan from my local library! I was such a lucky and spoiled gamer.*
X360 afterlife: lets use 720P and little of FXAA
PS3: what is FXAA?
Unfortunately PS3 does not support FXAA however it does support 2x TSAA which is quite similar to FXAA but it's not widely used on PS3 for some stupid reason
@@HeyCMDR1991YT coding laziness, wvery multiplatform looked worse than 360
@@pawegeryk898 It has nothing to do with them being lazy coding their games You dumb fuck The only reason why some third party PS3 games looked worse is because they were unfamiliar with the 32-bit cell processor It was a true nightmare towards game developers So all they really did was they made their games first on 360 then copied the game to the PS3 version and lowered the resolution between 480p and 720p meanwhile most third-party 360 games looked so much better because it was much easier to develop games on 360 Which is thanks to directX OS meanwhile PS3 used its own complicated proprietary OS And it was extremely limited to third-party game developers 🤦
Update controller fixes inputlag. DigitalFoundry TROLL!
I think it is time to revisit this comparison and put it along the other newer TR games
The frame rate drops, all the time. Anytime, anywhere.
+- mIcKyByRnE - isn't that what the video said? it looks like the 2013 version, with a similar framerate.
Xerazal These motherfuckers are making it out like the 360 version is better.
Xerazal Did they or did they not point out things that are supposedly better on the 360 version? Yes.
Very nice, its like playing the game at low settings on pc, keeping the overall feeling intact
I must say i am impressed with the 360 version of the game!
But it makes the question, did the developers make the game with limitations from last gen? I think so...
Xbox 360 is better? After 10 years, ps3 and Xbox 360 are good console yet
no wonder the 7th gen lasted so long
amazing machines
PS3? That was a POS.
I'm pissed off it didn't come out on PS3.
Horrible system
@@YCStudios_greece PS3 is very powerful, maybe even more than X360, it could have done this game perfectly.
It was hard to program for because of the weird architecture and some ports don't run smoothly because the programmers used only the main CPU and didn't know how to use the rest of the resources, but a capable team that knows how to extract 100% of the power of the system, can don wonders with it.
Xbox 360 will always be the best console ever!!!
I'm actually pretty damn impressed. I have a PS4 so I'll have to wait a year to get this game (unless I somehow come into a lot of extra money to buy an Xbox One). I do have a 360 though.... might actually pick this up after all if I can't stand the wait.
Nice to see that someone actually cared about this.
so banding problem depend on software not monitor or tv set ?
I completed this on Xbox One and truly had no problems with the input "lag".. It in no way effects your gameplay experience.
2:45 Check them lamps on the right, I prefer the XO in this case, but prefer the carpet in 360
I love your comparsison videos!
It really does show that the XBOX ONE and PS4 graphical leap from last gen isn't that big, as it was from sixth to seventh generations.
+DigitalFoundry I think it would have been better if you had included some normal speed gameplay footage
Why would you do that?
I think her hair is better in the xbox 360 version
A console at the end of its life cycle will always be my choice. There's something about playing a well optimised game in last gen ,like you feel not a single CPU cycle goes to waste. Very satisfying.
Impressed by the 360 version. Started it on the One today, and it's a spectacular looking game.
“Nips & Tucks, Snips & Such”!!
Love the choice of words considering the Context of… Everything!
***** It's there but it's minor.
+NYGamer
Seriously, don't listen to Digital Foundry. I have the 360 version and it pretty much the same as the 2013 graphics, but Lara just looks better. It has really bad frame rate issues anytime, anywhere. It's a great port, but the difference is significant.
I prefer the 360 version hairs. TressFx always looks unrealistically too much clean.
Well I like it. it looks great to me. it's kinda like how I like gameworks in the witcher 3
***** Well, actually I disagree. I think a cave can be very windy, especially if it has more than an exit. Small places with 2 or more exits, are usually very windy. The problem of the no tress fx version, is that the pony tail has a little viagra effect xD
Input lag is so atrocious, looks like Xbone can't handle this game.
It's already been patched
+MadBurrito x Hi shit head welcome back
123doomdoom Oh you again, i remember how hard you got rekt last couple of times, wanna get retk again, peasant boy?
Nixxes did an outstanding job porting Tomb Raider 2013 to PC. Let's hope they do it again.
+Rei dos Vermes They did bugger up the gamma, which is something that was never fixed. But otherwise it was a good job.
xbox 360 user here. i have completed this game and i just want to let you all know that there is a specific problem with the old gen versuon not mentioned here.bit seems that in many cases and in the final region in particular nixxes chose to turn ambient occlusion off to save performance. in these cases the gap in the graphics between the lse consoles becomes truly apparent. i dont know of its a bug or it switches off intentionally but it ruins the mood.
A magnificent review mate! Just because of this review, I ended up purchasing the game for the Xbox 360. Once again, Thank you :-)!
