  • It's pretty crazy how the tables turn. While in 2022, everybody was stating how #bollywood and hindi cinema is down in the dumps, the following year it is experiencing hit after hit. From #jawan #gadar2 and #pathaan being the blockbusters, the film industry experienced hits like #rockyaurranikipremkahani #satyapremkikatha and #zarahatkezarabachke . Will the trend continue with #tiger3 #animal and #dunki , we will have to wait and see. I hope you like the Bollywood Comeback In 2023 | Box Office Analysis

The reason 2023 is working wonders is because Hindi producers are finally learning of counter-programming as well. You don't counter another blockbuster with your own blockbuster. That led to the infamous 'flopbuster' phenomenon in June this year for Hollywood. Across the Spider-Verse, The Flash, Indiana Jones, Little Mermaid, and Transformers all releasing a week after another.
Blockbusters need time to breathe, and unless you are really confident, it's better to counter-program with mid-budget films or films that do not directly compete with the other (e.g., Barbenheimer)

If you’re getting 3 wonderful SRK films in one year, be very happy that you lived to see it. My hope in Bollywood was completely dead; I believed that those newer generation “actors” had finally taken over and it was clear that since then, Bollywood was dead and storytelling was dead. But then SRK came back, and now the faith is back. Even the other movies this year are worth watching. It’s just a great year. As for Jawan, a movie with zero skin show and no item numbers is ruling the world over right now. I LOVE that. As an American Indian Bollywood lover, the last time I witnessed hysteria like this was during Kabhi Alvida Naa Kehna times. And then suddenly before Jawan, for Rocky aur Rani. The theater goers are hooting and hollering again; they feel again. Finally. Just goes to prove we NEED people like KJo and SRK to bring the soul back into our cinema again, ‘cause boy has that been missing.

I hope now Bollywood will be back with more sequels and universes than ever before as they have a gold mine of franchises, scriptwriter, directors and genuine true talent waiting to make great movies again...truly the stars back then they making mediocre projects will do wonders at the box office was their ego that has been broken for the good.......I never saw industry celebrating each other's successful films that's a sign of unity❤

AND TIMING IS IMPORTANT TOO, THE TIME GAP GIVEN TO THE AUDIENCE TO BREATHE WITH ONE SUCH HIT FILM IS VITAL AT TIMES.

One thing is absolutely clear that statements like X genre or Y genre will definately work for the Indian audience can now be completely discredited. Audiences, thanks to OTTs have evolved and are now willing to see a film solely based on the story and value of the script. Starstudded casts and typical formula films no longer hold audiences' attention. Star presence can only bring in the initial numbers to the theatres but eventual longetivity of the movie will be based upon how the people connect to it. Glad to see the Hindi Film Industry rethinking its ideologies upon content and transitioning into this experimental phase!

it is great to see how actors are picking different roles out of their comfort zone. Ranbir playing a fiery gangster, Ayushman playing a cross-gender character, srk playing a character that is not larger than life for once in dunki. Need mainstream A listed actors to be more adventurous like this in the future.

I guess the issue is we are being spoilt left and right with many choices now that we have OTT. We have not only small - scale movies on there, but also Webseries, which are longer and often have 'smaller' actors delivering the best performances (and finally being able showcasing what they can do). On top of that I feel the Hindi movie industry was too long too arrogant and thought that they could just produce and make mediocre movies adn still have the audiences. But in today's time where you have access and know more about movies in other languages e.g., Telegu, Tamil, etc. the Hindu industry has really tough competitors and has understood that just having a Salman Khan or SRK won't be enough if not more is being provided. As much as I agree with your points that this year's movie have been better than 2022, I have a deja vu thinking back about the 2000s when we had some dud movies, hardly mentionable. I hope the next 3 months will provide us more movies, whereas in the past I would tell my families/friends to watch that and that movie, in recent times I wasn't able to suggest at least 1.

20 years back in 2002 was a huge let down for Hindi cinema at Box office with very few like Devdas made wonder and 2003 made a good comeback for Hindi cinema in the form of Koi Mil Gaya, Kal Ho Na Ho, Tere Naam, Munnabhai etc. And the history repeats in the form of 2022 being a huge let down and 2023 doing so well❤❤❤

I think you pointed out well, the prepandemic movies were just blah, those who went for bold topics were few. Now in 2023, not only we are getting good movies due to OTT consumption which focus on content more than anything. The hindi film creators are now not afraid to talk about sex education, rape and society in general. Thats why word of mouth works...as we expect the movies to have the same shallow topics but we get to know from others that it is more than that. I myself went for satyaprem, and rocky and rani cause of the same reason.
I am just so happy that hindi movies are back and how.

It's just the Magic of the King......SRK made his comeback that too with right films by taking 4 years break and understanding audience....His Comeback was enough to wake up Hindi audience, and also showing to haters, that if the film is good, no matters who is in it, it will work through people appreciate, and won't be stopped by the Hate narrative

They question to ask is why did he have to comeback why had he disappeared?! Because of the humiliating fate of his movies. Now he himself created his fan clubs and through them booking theatres if that is success, yes he truly has successfully made a comeback!

@@Besties591 shut, SRK has most 2.5cr ffs films, and 3 of 3cr ffs films that too before 2010,.....even his flops films has more ffs compared to most of hits of akshay kumar, his even movies weren't working because ppl wanted masala films over class, films and that what he gave them now, and obviously they did huge compared to so called action heroes n lottery stars couldn't do......now people are jealous, SRK has given blockbusters/superhits with romance and classic films, what you expect when he gets his own high octane action film to happen, obviously it would go big,.....just lucky that SRK'S hasn't yet used the same number of screens and languages that RRR and kgf2 used, if he does that.....yall will start crying more

In simple words, the Death of Bollywood and the rise of Hindi Cinema. For far too long Bollywood believed itself to be the only form of Cinema that represents this nation. I hope it stays that way. I see the change in the way these exxagarations are made. Jawan is the biggest hit from Hindi Cinema. That's going back to the basics for Hindi Cinema.
