Not really. I think part of it is that he was working with materials he wasn't familiar with and it caused issues. The vase came out beautifully once completed.

I love it when makers show us their whole process, mistakes and warts and all. It helps everybody learn. This turned out well in the end, like you always manage 😁
This is amazingly beautiful! Who would think that the shells of pistachios, plus resin and fantastic creativity would make an awesome masterpiece like this. You are so talented! Great job! Bravo!
Amazing project, Doug!! My stomach dropped when you held the broken piece the first time, and I hollered 'NOOOOO!' You are a warrior for pushing through and finishing this lovely piece - it really is stunning! And for the ones who gave the thumbs down, I say 'pfffft.' Thanks, Doug!
I think ur work is Amazing, & I appreciate that U dont edit out all the "oops" that lead to the final ta-dah!! Really inspiring to a novice like myself that often still has more oops than ta-dahs...gives me hope/motivation to keep going forward!
From what I've seen, in a scenario like this, you can displace a lot of the bubbles/air pockets with vibration. It's really effective for getting the resin into all those little shell spaces. It did turn out great, for all it fought you.
I love seeing your work as its 'warts and all' . You show us your success and failure and we can learn by your mistakes and problem solving. Awesome vase; reminds me of cloissoné
That vase is beautiful, it being the first time it was ever done, I believe you are a talented perfectionist and too hard on yourself in learning curves. Irregular medium, excellent result
That actually came out really nice - amazing pattern with those shells! What a bear of a project though - it's clear to me a fair amount of skill is required to even know how to recover from this type of experimenting.
Love it! I like how you show us the good and the bad. It’s all a learning process. It turned out beautiful. I’d like to have something like that. You do amazing work. Thanks for sharing with us.

Here's what I like about your channel - you experiment. You try different things. You're not confined by turning a simple log with no issues. I admire this effort in particular. It could have imploded on the lathe with a million air pockets, but you hung with it. Chapeau!
Another nice save, and i'm glad you put them in your videos so we can learn to fix the many mistakes we humble apprentices will run across from time to time.
Thought it was a recipe- I read it as ‘pistachio shells and raisins’. And thank you for keeping the mistakes in. Really informative, and helpful. Great finished piece, too!
I love this, green's my favourite colour. It looks awesome with all the different shapes. It far exceeds my expectations of what it was going to look like considering all the things that went wrong. Be proud of it, it's worth it! 😊
I love this guy. It’s like going back to shop class in grade 12. I learn something new every time I watch his videos. Thanks Teacher ! By the way ; shop class was back in 1976. I’m still learning.
My thoughts: This is a lovely vase. I love the way it looks, so delicate and the shade of colour is very beautiful. I figure that those curving shells probably trap a lot of bubbles of air and that’s why it bubbled so much. I wonder if putting it under pressure to cure rather than using a vaccuum would have worked better OR vaccuum pressure first to discharge bubbles and THEN pressure to cure to make the remaining bubbles shrink to minicule size would work? I also wonder if those shells have a waxy bloom on them naturally and that’s why there was trouble with the resin not sticking very well. If you ever try again I would suggest rinsing and agitating those shells in a cleaner like naptha or acetone and letting them dry well before using them. You could also try using a vibrating table or similar when adding the resin to attempt to get rid of as many bubble as possible and using a resin that was very runny to give as much help as possible to getting the bubbles to rise out of the resin/shell mix. I love the attempt and think you did as well as you could have under the circumstances but I wish you would try again too because you would have learned a lot from this attempt. I know I did.
The Pohl Barn Productions it would be fascinating to use different types of nut shells, too. Walnuts aren't as nice to eat as pistachios, but the shells would be great in resin - perhaps crushed to thumbnail size pieces first. For getting dust out of the shells, I'd start by shaking them in a sieve, preferably outdoors on a reasonably windy day, and then simply wash them.warm water with detergent would get that waxy bloom off them, and then just rinse well and leave them to dry in a sieve.
@Smileyrie James I used to pick walnuts when I was a kid. We would clean them up, chop them up, and put them in cookies and ice cream. Great times. I also wonder what the shells would look like in a shell/resin acrylic vase.
What I really like about your videos is that you show the mess-ups. Thank you for doing that and for sharing the fixes. You do push the limits and that's awesome. Next time try drying the shells in a dehydrator or oven.
Have you ever considered wearing a leather apron when you work to save some of your clothes/laundry? I love the idea of using pistachio shells. Who knew? And the end result...beautiful. Thank you for sharing.
I Don't think i could ever down thumb your creative skill Pol, That vase may have fought you to the bitter end but YOU created a real gem that any one of your subscriber would Happily display in pride of place. Keep up the good work 👍👍👍
Could you have mixed the shells into the epoxy in a separate mixing bowl, like you would fold nuts into cake batter, then pour the combined ingredients into the mold?
That might be the coolest looking resin project ever! Cleaning shells - put them in a pile on the table, put a seive or collander or screen over them, use the shop vac to suck out the dust.
OMG I forgot about pistachios. I love pistachios. They have a beautiful effect, Doug! Really look great. Thank you for the shout-out, my friend! Really appreciate it. I.m sitting here with my bag of pistachios in my lap watching your work in wonder. I love how this vase came out, beautiful. You turned this into a real work of art. Thanks for the video!
Those shells really made a cool effect. Great color match, too. And I really appreciate your showing mistakes and how to fix them and how you approach a project. Love it, Doug.
That really looks great! Watching how you recover from catches and make repairs is almost as informative as watching the technique you use to turn the projects Doug! Catches are going to happen and knowing how to fix them saves a ton of projects from hitting the garbage can or the fire pit! Thank you for your craftsmanship!
That was a pain but man, it’s pretty!! Love the maker coin in the bottom - might need some foxy ones of those now I’m turning more than pens - good one Doug!! 🥰🌲🦊🌲

Thoughts: Oven toast the shells. Mix shells into slow set liquid resin, letting air pockets be gently stirred out. Then fill the form with the mix. Turn a lid out of the foam. Or send the foam to me to play with!!! Or better yet, send it to Z. H. to turn. Still, your determination to see it through to a good final form says a lot.
Great video!!!!! Please keep em coming. I don't know if you realize this, but your teaching skills are improving day by day. I really look forward to the next video.
It turned out really nice. I like how the trials and errors are left in. Not everything turns out the first time everytime and done in 5 minutes like a lot of videos make it look like.
Hey Doug, great job, beautiful work. Love seeing those mishaps too and how you work around them. Just getting my equipment together to start casting and pistachio shells where on my list to do. Thanks to you and Nick Zammeti's videos and others you two have directed all of us to, I feel I won't have as many failures.
I used pistachio shells for a resin project and like you I said several colorful metaphors. I redid it for the second time and as I poured the resin I instantly realized what the problem was and why this pour wasn't going to be any better. Salt dust. The shells are covered in salt dust! So I washed and dried them and it was so much better! The next time I used them I boiled them in dyed water and they were not only green and red (I did 2 pots for Christmas colors) but all the little stuff caught in the shells fell out AND they were dust free so the resin stuck beautifully!
Really love the effects of the shells. Like the colours too. I love that you repaired and carried on. I hate the amount of waste some turners make and just throw away so much good materials and items that break. They still carry the work of the maker. Fantastic save on the bottom. Good looking vase by the end. Thank you for sharing it.
I absolutely love this vase. I know it was a pain in the butt, but it is really cool with all the swirl patterns. Thank you for sharing. ❤ 😎 A watcher from Florida.
The whole process of this guy is a total shitshow. It's fun tho, super creative, amazing art with those shells. Well done.

It's beautiful--the shell shapes are amazing, and the color--perfect together.
