I’ve just bought one of these and it’s absolutely fantastic. It feels far more robust than my Hippekniep and the blade is as thick as on my large Mercator. I love it.
The Otter looks as though it hits a sweet spot between being solid (and therefore functional) on the one hand, and beautiful (and therefore possibly "too nice to ever use") on the other. The Michael May knife looks beautiful. But I'd never want to use it for fear of getting it scratched etc! The Otter looks like a sturdy, dependable workhorse that will take whatever gets thrown at it, and the sapele wood has a lovely grain.
I’ve half a dozen or so Otter knives ranging from their real budget to an anchor with a blued blade and white smooth bone with brass inlaid anchor. All are lovely! A really good make. You could fix your Case knife’s centring easily enough. The Wharncliffe blade was designed as a small game knife. I think that the Ettrick pattern is the daddy of all of these. That ‘warp’ is rare because it’s easily fixed. You need a plastic faced hammer or a light hammer and a cloth. Johnny Juke has a great video on how to do it.
Thanks for the fixing advice on the centering and warping. I was scared to try anything for fear of worsening the condition of the blades. The Ettrick is one of my favourite traditional models! I have an Ebony one by A. Wright. Have you seen the Viper Swayback? It's great! P.S. check out Otter's Messer Kleiner Doktor. (Little Doctor's Knife). It's a great UK legal slippie!
Otter must have a great reproduction ability. My spring end is cut badly just the same. My pull from the weak half stop to the open position is even stroger then yours. Even closing it from fully open position takes a lot of force. I'm not surprised you hit the tripod when opening the knife. My spring is totally silent. My blade to spring transition is as bad, the tang end is cut at an 30 degree angle, not parallel to the spring end. My blade is straight. Lucky me. The wood is wonderful.
nice video again, love your reviews! Intersting about Case, my Case Swaybacks have all very bad centering, Sycamore wood for example looks the same like yours. Case really has a quality issue, more so than Otter. The Otter blade in this case I would return, for me blade wobble as well as bent blade is a defect(!), thats something I always return to the dealer, no discussion.
I'm looking for my next Wharncliffe after loving the case sway back gent. I saw this one on the otter messer site, saying they were bringing back an old design. I have a few boker solingen knives with "bent" blades as well, i figured they were bent to sit straight inside the liners?
Hi, Matt. I believe this is a flaw. I have not confirmed this however. Some have said it is a normal thing for knives. Although don't quote me on that.
Michael May beats all of them. I myself own a custom May with double brass bolsters and a clip point blade. Fantastic user. I own Otters, Wrights and TEW’s but they do not come close to an M. May. Nice collection!
Bent (or "Crinked") blades are unfortunately common. I have an Ottermesser Anchor, a Boker Barlow, several locking GEC and several Queen which all have bent blades. In fact, when I visited Queen, I couldn't find one in the factory store which was straight! I think the problem lies in the pivot hole not being drilled at right angles or perhaps the liners shifting during pinning operations. I re-pinned a Wright Ettrick and a Victorinox Pocket Pal to change the scales to Elforyn and both came out straight - but I'm not doing piecework!
Really enjoying your channel. Great selection of knives. I'm a big fan of messer HQ channel, unsure what's happened to him? He's not put anything out for a while. Keep the videos coming!
That's a shame about the blade. I'd honestly send it back if you can take the patina off. It does suit that patina though. I like the handle on the Joseph Rodgers, but with these things you need to put them in your hand. Thanks for the run through of the weavers knife.
@@TheStreamingEnderman Yes, but even if you tampered with it, the issue was obviously still present before. I don't think they could argue that you were capable of warping a blade. But it's your choice in the end, just saying.

I own several Otter Messers. Each is exceptional well built with beautiful finishing.

Your review: So it is ! I'm using three of them. Practicable and very sharp - if you're looking for ;-)

I love Michael's work, but the quality can be questionable at times. At least that's my experience. Cheers!

I'm too scared to take my knives apart. I'm shocked to hear that this issue could come from the likes of GEC and Böker!

Thanks for watching! I've been worried about Joe for a while now. He is quite absent.
looks like it would be great for whittling, and hard to argue with the price
Agreed!
Looks almost exactly like the Otter Messer Anchor knife.
Just the blade-change, as this knife is on the same frame.

I can't send it back due to it's condition being altered. Sadly. The knife is still nice though.
@@TheStreamingEnderman Yep, it's still a nice knife. Enjoy.
@@TheStreamingEnderman Are you sure about that? I mean what are they going to do with the knife when you send it back? Probably trash it...
I believe tampered products void the warranty. So sending it back would be worthless.
