    A few years back, a southamerican youtuber who collects Saint Seiya Myth Cloth figures said that for him, collecting is like a photo. A photo is a way of capturing and preserving a memory of something or someone that brings you joy, so figures are essentially just a 3D photo of things from your childhood that bring you joy.

    @9:56 your analogies and comparisons are spot on. I am both; a child athlete and an adult toy collector. The dopamine release following the win of a game, is no different than receiving a package in the mail from an eBay auction; knowing what’s in the box. However, I started collecting due to life tragedies. I realized that reflection on my childhood, gave me the most relief, in this crazy, dynamic world… I began to obsess over childhood experiences and memories, to help alleviate my stress and from there (over time), I turned to photo albums and yard sales, thrift stores and flea markets, antique stores and consignment shops to get my fix and then… WELCOME TO THE INTERNET. Yep, I’ve been collecting for a looooooong time and I still appreciate, a sense of accomplishment from winning a game, or adding a figure to my collection. Peace, Love & Respect from ATL

    In my case, it's because I see action figures the same way people see the likes of paintings, sculptures, and other forms of art, and there's also the part about representing something I love. And yes, the "zen" relaxation is a big thing for me too. Seeing He-Man, Ultraman (the giant silver Japanese alien, not the alternate evil Superman), completed (and usually customized) Gundam model kits, etc on my shelf feels relaxing and comfortable.
    As a kid, I grew up around a lot of toys, and I had an "Andy from Toy Story" level connection to mine. I also grew up around a lot of cartoons, mainly anime and early 2000s reboots of 80s cartoons which were essentially toy commercials to begin with. Stuff like 200X He-Man, Transformers: Armada, 4kids' Ninja Turtles (best version of April O'Neil, you can't change my mind), G.I. Joe: Spytroops/Valor vs. Venom, etc.
    I used to be ashamed of still being interested in toys past the age of being too old to play with them (mainly from a bad experience in middle school where I got the entire class laughing at me after they found out I was still interested in Legos). From that moment on, the majority of my class lost any chance of respecting me as "one of them" and instead constantly treating me as the "baby brother" of the class at best, and a loser manchild basement dweller at worst.
    But all my friends now completely respect my hobby (if they don't, then they're no longer my friends), my parents understand why I love them so much (they even like watching The Toys That Made Us and they said it taught them to understand me better!), and it's great.
    I'm a grown man, I love toys, and I have no shame in it.

    Maybe I am the only one who does this, but going back to my childhood, I never really cared about the official stories on TV and made my own adventures with my toys. If/when my wife and I have children, I would like to do much the same with them. Story telling is part of our nature as humans. I much prefer our own imagination over that of reenacting what we saw on screen.
    I detest the sequel trilogy, but when I saw bargain bin Black Series toys for The Force Awakens (and rightfully so), it was an easy purchase. Forget what was on screen - Old papa Han Solo can go on adventures with his daughter Jaina Solo (released in 2017). Rey, on my shelf, could have chosen to run off with Kylo to train together. His attempts to draw out the dark side and her attempts to bring him back to the light. Old Like is such a bad character in the films, but wise old Luke on my shelf can be the leader of the new Jedi Order.
    Give me good toys and I will make my own fun.

      Agreed. I grew up in a country where we didn’t have access to the 80s cartoons, but I still had the greatest fun with my MOTU, Joes and Transformers. I’d take my MOTU figures down to the dirt and brick pile left by construction workers and create my own mountains, tunnels, mazes etc. and developed elaborate plots and stories. I always wanted a Castle Grayskull as a kid, and never had one, but the stuff and places around me often were much larger and creative backdrops and environments for my play time, so I can’t complain.

    While I feel many of the reasons stated in this video do apply to me but there is much bigger reason for my collecting: I never really grew up. It was my little secret I kept that still played with toys/make belief with my younger brother well into our teenage years. But I did finally graduated high school, went to college, started a job, and socialized with a lot more "grown ups", that finally killed my imaginative playing for awhile. Then I met a woman who would eventually become my wife and she was big kid too! We got back into our shared childhood interests like watching shows/movies. Then we soon had kids of our own and they got into it too. Of course they got into toys and I played with them. It just brought me back into my imaginative playing and absolutely love it.
    It's a little different for me now because I do many of those adult collector things like organize, categorize, build diorama pieces, and getting into toy photography. Ultimately for me it's about the playing out those stories; whether they're my own recreation of classics or brand new stories. One of the best parts of becoming a father and no longer embarrassed by it. 😁
    Love the channel too. I'm mega nerd and love learning in general but especially about my interests.

    While I don’t disagree with the points you make, being a toy collector with a RUclips channel myself and being 62 years old (I know… I know…) I find none of them apply to me at least. For example… points of articulation never even enters into it for me, and likewise, “completing a set” is not something I consider when collecting superhero figures or electronic dinosaur toys. Even my Hot Toys (both of them) I nerve pose beyond a basic display and have no desire to. For me it’s a hybrid of unique colors and design of the figure costume and look mixed with elements of rarity or exclusivity that drives my buying inertia. But I do definitely agree about adults have money and therefore… That is a biggy. LOL. It should also be noted and observed in my videos that 95% of my collection are knock offs superhero figures.. with crazy colorful paint schemes, odd voice boxes, funny display boxes and what not. Why I am attracted to fakes is another story… but it has nothing to do with me being cheap. LOL

    For me it's a combination of 2 things:
    1- I wasn't allowed to have many toys because my parents believed money shouldn't be wasted on junk, later it was due to getting too old to play with toys, so for me this is getting something I was denied from in the past.
    2- Modern toys are better engineered, more affordable and covers more franchises and characters that weren't made in the past that I wished to have as a kid and my wishes are getting fulfilled figure by figure.

    For me, it began during the 1960s when I became addicted to DC comics. There was a superhero called the ELONGATED MAN who could stretch any part of his body like a rubber band. At first, he did not appeal to me but then I ran across a book on Real-life Sideshow Freaks, one of which included the true-life freak called the Elastic-Skin Man because he could stretch his skin 8 inches. That made me think that the superhero the Elongated Man is plausible because of the real life skin man. But I had to wait over 10 years before a figurine of him was made. Also available then were figures of Mr Fantastic from the Fantastic Four who was also elastic, so I bought him too, especially when the first movie came out. Those figures were great because you could stretch certain parts of the body such as stretching the neck to make it as long as a giraffe's neck. In other words you could make the figurine actually show the superpower. Much better than a Superman figure because the Superman figure cannot actually fly whereas the Elastic Man figure can actually stretch. So the Elastic Man figures have that advantage, if you know what I mean.

    Thought provoking video. For me, my collection of figures, statues, and other items, are my Treasure ! It represents a carefully curated group of items that I display in my home as you would see in a museum. Friends tell me that I am an 'Archivist', someone who documents and preserves items as a way of enjoying them. I even restore older vintage things, such as china cabinets, that I then use for displaying my treasures. Art is also something that I collect, and as an artist myself, I enjoy displaying and preserving fine books containing art and literature. Some of my rare books are over 100 years old. I feel lucky to have them and fiercely protect them from sunlight and damage from the environment. I've read that the Victorians started the hobby of collecting groups of things in American culture. If so, I applaud their efforts. I know that part of what drives the way that I preserve my collection is my childhood. When I was young my toys had a habit of disappearing from time to time. What I didn't realize was that my mother hated anything cluttering up the house, even if it was on a shelf. it really became apparent went I left home for college and she sold all of my built models to a trash man. I really never forgave her for that. In a reversal of that I told my son that I would store all of his original Star Wars toys for him when he went into the Navy. He was thinking of throwing them away. Years later I brought them back to him when my great grandson expressed delight over seeing the first Star Wars movie at the ripe old age of 3. As we both watched him going through the multitude of figures and spaceships I reminded him that there was a substantial dollar figure represented in his collection. He said he didn't care, as long as the little guy was happy playing with them. He thanked me for keeping them and all his toys for all those years. My life had come full circle.

    I agree with your thesis overall but of course individual 'mileage may vary'. I for instance prefer a well-rounded or representative collection rather than a complete one. Also articulation is one of the lesser toy selection criteria for me.
    I should however admit that my key collectible is Transformers G1 and so I'm conditioned to accept low articulation (except for the fact that transformation _is_ the ultimate form of articulation). ;)

    This is a very weird category that doesn't apply to all the toys I own, but to a certain segment it does - DISCOVERY. If something is based on mythology or folklore, or literature, or history, or anything like that, learning more about it is part of the adventure. Monster In My Pocket gave me a love of mythology and research that has bled into my life as an adult. Back in the day I had to go to the LIBRARY to research figures like the "Bishop Fish" (from medieval/renaissance European folklore, claimed sightings by Polish fishermen, and there are like three or four toys of it), or learning that the "Jotun Troll" is actually Thrivaldi, the nine-headed giant slain by Thor, or a million other bits of awesome research from it. I've mentioned Demon's Chronicle, and stumbling across those figures a while ago came at the perfect timing to get me reading up on Solomon's demons, and heyyyyyy, if you read my book(s) (second manuscript has been sent to the editors!), you'll notice a distinct running trend.
    "educational" toys don't just teach math. Sometimes they teach monsters.

I look at all my stuff and if I didn't have all these things it wouldn't make a difference but at the end of the day I just like stuff.

    I have this with synthesizers but what gives me anxiety about toy collections is that aside from rearranging them, they just sit there. You could spend time playing with them, but this makes me feel even more confused about it. If they are arranged well (like the batmans) it doesn't bother me as much, because they look more like art. I would feel better about the whole thing if I knew whether or not some become more valuable, instead of the majority of them losing value and become relatively worthless. I just want the purchasing decisions to be sound.

    Funny how different is your point of view from mine.
    I collect toys for 30 years and I almost disagree on everything you stated in that video.
    I have never been a completist and I prefer getting a little bit of everything when those items really make sense to me, sometimes I only take one particular piece of a line, sometimes just a few of them for getting some kind of team.
    My latest obsession with toys is Hotwheels cars which I started to collect in 2009, I had friends who were collecting hws since late 90s but it is a particular car (factory stock 1964 chevy impala in blue then in red) which made me a wanna be hotwheels collector but like the other toys I collected I chose not to get everything they produce and to stay away from past released as much as possible;
    I remember that Mattel/Hotwheels on their website was the opposite of the "collect them all" idea, there was a text for welcoming new collectors from all ages and they warned about not trying to get them all in order to avoid stress and much rather collect what your particular taste might be and to build a personnal collection of yours and enjoying the hunting time which is a big part of the Hotwheels collecting.
    Nowadays Hotwheels is no more such a fun thing to collect due to social media and the hype it creates but this is another story.
    I like to watch your videos because they give me an understanding about toy lines I don' collect or have any interst in, keep it up and hello from France !

    There's collectors then there's completionist. Collectors don't usually have the need for EVERYTHING. Yes they go after grails and high end stuff, but that where it stops. A completionist isn't satisfied until the line is 100% complete. These are two very different animals.
    DONT go comparing toys to trophies. Trophies you actually have to have skill, talent, team based mind, people skills. Toy collecting IS NOT A ACTIVE form of entertainment. You littery look at a screen, place your order, then put in on a shelf. That's not being active, putting together a X-Men team isn't the same as winning a championship with an entire team. Being a guy who wasn't a sport guy, SHOULDNT be speculating on something you didnt experience. If you did, you'd NEVER would have made the comparison. Apples to oranges.

    I find it funny how Scott mentions how articulation is so important for adult collectors, yet every picture of toy collections I've seen (including the ones Scott uses for this video), has the action figures on the tremendously dynamic pose of… Standing up, holding their accessories, sometimes holding them up high!! Bit of a waste of all those joints I'd say. Still, I get the point Scott makes about the feeling of accomplishment related with owning all the action figures, and it helps me understand why some people are willing to spend hundreds of thousands of dollars on what amounts to very expensive bibelots.

    • @spectorcreative1872
      @spectorcreative1872  4 года назад

      Yeah, when you have figures posed as "waiting for the bus" it does negate having all that articulation. But I would say about 80% of the stuff I have on display is posed how "I want" and that is only possible due to joints &c... Can't em all!

    • @darkwoods1954
      @darkwoods1954 4 года назад

      I might display my toys in one pose most of the time but when I fiddle around with them I love posing them. I don't think many collectors purely display the toys without enjoying fiddling around with them too. Though I do feel how you do when it comes to people who never open the figures. If you never open them then the articulation is pointless, as is any sculpt and paint detailing on the back of the toy.

    • @darkwoods1954
      @darkwoods1954 4 года назад

      as for people spending hundreds and thousands of dollars on toys. It's the same as anything else. Outside of the essentials like food, shelter, heating etc anything we spend our money on can be considered a waste. But if it's stuff you enjoy and brings you happiness then that's all that matters. Be it shoes, sports memorabilia or toys. Heck, people have bought trinkets and ornaments to decorate their homes for generations. Toys are just modern ornaments.

I understand where your coming from about not being a sports kid and having no trophies on your wall, but the whole "sense of accomplishment" from purchasing plastic off a shelf vs participating in a team activity with fellow humans in something that's physically demanding is no comparison whatsoever. We just have to accept some of us are slaves to the souless multi billion dollar corporations who prey on our nostalgia.
