Eugenics: In the shadow of Fairview | Oregon Experience

- Over a period of 60 years, the state forcibly sterilized over 2,600 Oregonians.
From 1923 to 1983, Oregon law allowed for compulsory sterilization of those deemed unfit for reproduction. It was part of a broader eugenics movement to remove “undesirable” individuals from the gene pool.
Today, some Oregonians still live with the consequences of that outdated law.
In commemoration of the 30th anniversary of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), OPB is joining with other public media partners around the country to promote inclusion for people with intellectual and physical disabilities. The “Move To Include” initiative highlights the unique and diverse stories of people with disabilities. These stories and additional resources are available to teachers, families, and students through the PBS LearningMedia collection.
Move To Include is sponsored locally by Relay Resources.

We must acknowledge all of our history, the good and the bad.
Thank you, this is one of those pieces of history that should never be allowed to be forgotten.
Joseph Greiner Democrats are trying to erase it today.
Yes. Specially after watching nowaday's human kind I'm quite sure that they were right.
With how things are going, I can easily imagine this happening again. However, the definitions of retardation, degeneracy, perversion, habitual crime, etc. will change...
It is happening again; but more discreet in how it is done.
Yes sir!
Wanting liberty and freedom are now going to be a major form of retardation! Worthy of sterilization!
A person's desire to be self sufficient and be left alone by the government sounds very perverse indeed.
Isn’t it happening still but with vaccines? Probably other methods are also used.
I see you voted for Donald J Trump.... castrate this man! 😳
It’s never stopped. Planned parenthood. Bill gates dad started it
My brother lived in Fairview 25 years and was one of the last to leave when it was closed. He lives today and is well cared for, a sturdy soul of 61 years, bless him and his life’s journey. ❤️ My prayers go out to everyone who lived there and their family’s that love them. Let us all be diligent to keep close watch on government and systems so History does not repeat our mistakes of the past.
7 18 20 Hello to the Team, Glad this horrid behavior is over. Glad to see there's an apology that was given; better late, than never. May the souls exposed to this find peace. Thanks for posting. Stay safe, keep calm, & be well everyone. v
It’s not over though. It’s happening at an exponential rate in plain site under the guise of ‘science’ and ‘medicine’ all o er the world. Look at what is happening right now. Please wake up.
7 21 20 Hey@@gwengwen4535, Source-please. &, your suggestion is to do what? What exactly is occurring & the specific institutions that are engaged in this behavior. Thanks. Stay safe, keep calm, & be well. v
@@virginiatyree6705 tbh you could take initiative to do your own research instead of going "source please" and expect people to do the work handing answers to you. Read about alot of different social issues and then decide for yourself what course of action is possible for you.
Just Google modern day eugenics and you'll get alot of articles. You could use Google scholar too. aeon.co/essays/eugenics-today-where-eugenic-sterilisation-continues-now
Sick people with inherited diseases, people with mental problems, and people of color continue to be victims of eugenics to this day.
Planned Parenthood idolizes the racist eugenicist Margaret Sanger to this day and carries on her horrid taking of life
Alejandra Trippin Thank you. I have found over the years that when I do oblige people with research, they aren’t really interested in it at all, but are only interested in arguing and supporting their world view. Which is more than likely a propaganda programmed world view anyway, and those are nearly impossible to break through with any amount of reason and logic.
Many of those buildings ere just torn down a few years ago. It's one block south of Fairview Industrial Dr in Salem Oregon. There's a Green Housing development going in there now.
I have visited there a few times. Very dark vibes there, due to the things that happened.
I worked at Fairview from 82-till it closed in 2000. Was one of the last employees closing up the institution. I felt so sorry for the patients that w
Were moved out of the only home they ever knew. Fairview was like a town with churches, pool, clothing store, gym, snack shop, ball court,2lg dining restaurants, apartments, summer parades, lots of activities, and many friends for all. Most females were on birth control because the state and federal government deemed having sex was a human right and staff were not allowed to stop it unless someone was getting hurt. The patients took “much” advantage of this right. If birth control hadn’t been prescribed by each female patients doctor we would have thousands of babies born(some disabled and some not). What was to be done with these children with the institution shut down, families of patients not wanting contact and the inability of probably 98% of patients not able to care for themselves let aline a baby.
Very sad. Homelessness is a solvable problem
Learning is essential
The woman that spoke should not have been forced to have a sterilization surgery (unless she was a preditor which is highly unlikely). Many should not have children, but that doesn't make it acceptable. But personally I have no problem with rapists being sterilized or chemically castrated.
Given that two drunk people at a party having consensual sex means the man is a rapist, I disagree with you.
@@gregcarlson8438 I basically agree with you. A lot of people are charged when it's not the case My neighbor for example is technically a sex offender but shouldn't have been charged. He had a toxic relationship with his girlfriend of several years and she pressed rape charges on him going back throughout their relationship even though she kept coming back to the house after she filed a restraining order. Maybe he raped her, maybe she was just a vindictive psycho 🤷. But a situation like that is not the same as a preditory rapist or molester.
The saddest part is when you watch what human kind have turned into, you start to guess they were right.
Margret Sanger, founder of planned parenthood, was also a huge fan of Eugenics. Don’t think this still isn’t going on today...it’s just in a different form.
Exactly. Look what is happening in the world RIGHT now.
Yep vaccine relatable!
I saw nothing about deaf being sterilized here. I know they were.
Weird that this is popping up. I'm writing a book about a woman who had once came from fairview. Fiction but the point still stands that it was a horror show.
What is the book called
@@franciscoholdman929 Colours. It's about wonderland and mythology and the unsettling nature of reality.

EUGENE ics lol
‘Public health’ was the vehicle for eugenics.
1983???
1983????!!!!
Yes. Oregon was the last state to allow compulsory sterilization of inferior people; using the terms used in the law. The United States Supreme Court ruling Buck v Bell still stands today as active and enforceable. States can use the ruling as a means of sterilization of certain people.
Yeah wow look at us now, sure glad they did the right thing...
I was with patients. The ones born to 2 state hospital patients are a special kind of crazy. It's no life . Inside institution for life.
at 1:25 to @1:30 I thought this might be a MadTV sketch and had to catch myself mid-chuckle. 1983??!!
Jesus holy Christ, that is LATE for some unconscionable medieval cruelty of this depth. Wow.
I was a part of sterilization by Dr. David Moore OBGYN office was in downtown Portland. 1977
I worked in Fairview and I helped to shut it down.
Got to love evolution.
TAMLA TANETTE MOORE IS THE MOST HIGH AND UNSTOPPABLE TOO.. HOLY TURTLE ISLAND
This should be done today more than anything.
Save your sorry’s. I’ve got sorry greeting me at the front door.
And who supported Eugenics and what groups did they found? Hmmmm.
Right? The very people who run the world, that’s who. Most of these people were actually more than likely exposed to toxins or their parents were. DDT is one on several widely used poisons that maimed and killed millions under the guise of ‘polio’ ...
I think what he was getting at was the famous planned parenthood, which sprang from the Progressive mind of eugenics advocate Margaret Sanger. Back in the 30's she gave a speech in front of Hitler, and some suggest this gave him the idea and justification for the final solution. Progressive, socialist Progressive, democratic socialist, same page in the same book.
Why is opb paying to advertise? We don’t want to watch your shot

Only in Oregon! Sickening!
Unfortunately, no. It occurred in 33 states.
Sterilization is still happening all around the world today!
Good troll

Oh no not only In Oregon. When Oregon got to start the shut down they were actually in the for front of the movement.
Just so sad
How many mungos don't exist right now because of this??
This should be law across the country.
Cal Techie you are a disgusting human being who ignores the suffering of thousands of people and families across the country .

Dogs and crops aren't humans. Nice dehumanizing "analogy"

Can we also discuss the good things Oregon’s last has contributed lmao? When people look back at the history of 2020 all they’re gonna see is how negative everyone is
*how unblind to injustice we're attempting to be.
oh wow how uncomfortable for you to acknowledge our homestate did this to people
How about the time Springfield was the first municipality to include homophobic legislation
How about the Shanghai tunnels of Portland?
We haven't even scratched the surface of Oregon's dark history. Ignorance of facts doesn't lessen the harm done. Until we look at our mistakes, acknowledge them and work to do better then we *perpetuate* the harm done.
We should keep doing that
Ah, the good old days
