I will be moving to Mexico shortly and want to move to the area where you guys live. Your place is beautiful, I love it! You two are also very good at giving relevant information in an intelligent and comprehensible manner without a lot of extraneous chit chat. So glad I found your channel. Thanks for all the useful information. 🙂
Bugs and lizards is a GREAT tip. I’m from Toronto, currently living in Barbados (looking to move to Mexico). I had to move out of my parents holiday home where I was paying no rent, into an apartment just to get away from the lizards and bugs (occasionally roaches). It’s the tropics and it’s unavoidable, but definitely something to keep in mind.
Just discovered your channel recently and am really enjoying the content and the great info and details you provide. My husband and I visited Merida during our month in Tulum three years ago and thought it was beautiful. We were on a preretirement trip to see if Mexico might be a place for us. Your videos have confirmed that it may be.
You guys got an awesome apartment - I think it was the best of the options you saw. Hopefully there are some restaurants and such in this neighborhood so that when Covid ends you can really enjoy the city. I went to Merida once about 2 years ago and stayed in a hotel near Paseo de Montejo and we loved Merida. What an awesome little city, super historic, walkable, safe, charming, amazingly affordable. It has it all, except the mass of gringo tourists. If you get a chance you should check out Campeche, which is another colonial city that feels like Havana. Enjoy.
I screamed when I saw your commercial the second time!!! I wasn’t sure the first time but I thought I recognized David. The second time, I saw the both of you and just lost it. I was so happy for you guys!!!

I love your videos. My wife & I live in New Jersey & humidity is brutal in summer. Dehumidifier is a must NJ & NYC…we can get over a gallon per day collected in it.
Another awesome video. So glad you took this place and are happy. And now I understand why you wanted a newer apartment. Great info about Charles Schwab. I would think that this would be helpful for anyone just visiting Mexico. Happy Thanksgiving to you both!

Do you guys (or your real-estate agent) have any contacts for local artisans who make custom made furniture? Do you guys have a housekeeper? Are you located near a City Market? Are there local produce vendors near you?
There isn’t a City Market in Merida (yet), we don’t have a housekeeper (although most people do) and there are lots of local produce vendors within a five min drive from our place (nothing walkable though!). Hope that’s helpful!

I have dual citizenship. * Do you recommend renting first before buying?
Thanks so much for the kind words. We’re not sure about the tax situation (definitely talk to your accountant and lawyer) but we’d highly recommend renting in Merida for at least a year before purchasing - you want to make sure you’re ok with all the seasons here. The summer is hooooot 🔥

Thank you so much for posting these videos on your experiences in Merida. I am flying there at the end of March to look for a rental. You mentioned to post questions before moving - so if you don't mind? 1) I do not know Spanish (yet). Which of these cities has more bi-lingual folks: Merida, playa del carmen or Cancun? 2) of those cities, is it possible to get a 1 bedroom in a nice area for $500 or less? 3) have you had any experience with the medical community? (that is the main reason I am having to move) 4) maybe you could provide the contact of your real estate agent? Thank you again for your posts and all the information :)
Congrats on your upcoming move! We haven't spent time in Playa or Cancun yet, so we can't speak to the number of bilingual folks in either, although we'd imagine Cancun had the most of the three. We've had great experiences with doctors here so far (check out our video on getting healthcare) and our realtor's name was Edna (edna@thohaus.mx), she'd be able to give you a better sense of the market. But we're positive you can find a one bed in that price range. Best of luck!!
@@TravelWTravis Thank you SO much for your time and advice. I contacted Edna on email to ask about cities, then hopefully schedule an appointment to view a couple of places when I arrive. Great content, thank you! Questions for your realtor as you asked: What are the tax/fee implications if any, for foreign renters in the long term, say if you live there longer than 12 months? Also, do you get your security deposit back, if you decide to move back to the states after a certain time frame? Can she talk more about the guarantor that foreigners "should" probably have. Thanks for this video, truly informative. Blessings.
Buen dia, are you getting a sense of what the heat is going to be like in your new space? Do you think you could have used more windows? I will be very curious to know what your first electric bill will be. Did you install your bidet yourself?
It hasn’t been too hot overall, but we have plenty of AC. Not sure what the electric bill will end up being, but we’re going to do a monthly budget video, so we’ll keep you posted! And we did instal the bidet ourselves - it’s super easy and fits right under the regular toilet seat (the link to the one we have is in the video description).
@@TravelWTravis I'm coming there soon. I'm going to connect with your realtor and I'm gonna to order that bidet. I had one in my home before. I bought it from Costco. My family's reaction was, oh there she goes again being weird. Tenga buen fin de semana!
I just finished binging your videos! Great channel! We are looking to move out of the US upon retirement and love seeing what is in Merida. And bonus that you are plant based, too! Sprinkle some reviews on how eating that way works for you in Merida. When you talk with your broker can you get some price ranges for 1 bedroom apartments? And what's with your FB link? Who is Peter Lee? He doesn't look like either of you. ;) Keep up the good work!
Ah - thank you so much for catching the link issue! Peter Lee must have also been very confused with some friend requests :) We fixed that and they should all work now. We're definitely planning a video around being plant-based in Mexico, because it's been a journey! And we'll definitely ask the broker for some price ranges for all types of homes - great question!
It is! There’s a ton of precautions and a mask mandate everywhere, but restaurants with outdoor seating is available and seems like most of the outdoor stuff (beaches, cenotes, flamingo reserve, etc) are back open. To be honest, we moved here expecting to spend 95% of the time in our living room because of the pandemic - we just wanted a less expensive living room to be in 🙃 But we’re excited to see what the city will look like after the pandemic is behind us (next year 🤞😬🤞)!
Hey Guys! Hope to see you in the "Gringo Haunts" like COSTCO, Home Depot, etc. Hubby and I first lived in Merida in the late 80's and vowed to retire in the area. Fast forward to 2007 and we retired and moved here permanently. We have lots of friends in Merida, and took a lot of time reconnecting, but found Merida had changed so, that we no longer found it a good match for us. We built a home in Motul nearby, and love it so out here. Suggestion or two. DampRid is your friend. Easy to get at Home Depot, but often available in WalMart. Like David, my guy can sniff a situation before it becomes a real problem. DampRid prevents a lot of those musty odors in closets, drawers and pantries. Come on out sometime, and we will show you around Motul and you can try Huevos Motuleños!
Amazing - thanks so much for the tip!! And that's so great you guys are here permanently - literally every day we've been here one of us turns to the other and says how we will probably never leave :) We'll give you a shout when we get a bit more settled and head out to Motul!!
You guys are fantastic... If you come to puerto vallarta.. tell me about something other than the romantic zone... Love the video on how it feels to be a black man.. you were dead on... Good luck to both of you!
Hey Guys!! Nice to virtually meet you. My boyfriend and I live in Mexico already (in Guadalajara) and we are planning to move to Merida sometime ☺️. Not sure if you mentioned already but in which zone are you renting? North? South? Thanks 😊 and congrats for the moving!!! You are going to help us a lot.
Thanks so much for watching! We're in the North, but would obviously recommend visiting and exploring each neighborhood before moving (they all have their pros and cons, depending on what you're looking for).
Great question! It was a little stressful, but there's great co-working spaces we used (we made a video on them here: ruclips.net/video/ZRFVDBgU9Mc/видео.html)
Your apartment is gorgeous! I have a question for you. Are you close enough to walk to a coffeehouse or any little markets? How far away from the center of Merida are you? We also have no interest in buying a car in Mexico but it might be nice to be able to walk to a downtown type street with cafes, movie theaters etc. thanks! I love your channel!
Yes, we feel super safe! Overall, we haven't had any issues with safety during our time in Merida (it's one of the safest cities in North America) but I would definitely recommend checking out Amoya Shante's channel (ruclips.net/channel/UCo-eTIO05fINx8yKEoZsizQ) as she's a single mom who's been traveling all over and can *definitely* provide more insight into life abroad with little ones!
For your realtor: what are things you should watch and listen for when you’re apartment hunting in Merida that would tell you that it’s not a good spot to live?
My partner and I live in LA and are flirting with the idea of moving to Rivera Maya. Loved this vid and would love to hear about any future challenges you might run into. Utilities, etc. gracias
Did you guys guess correctly?? What do you think of the new place? And let us know what questions you have for our broker!

Hello. What’s Merida like now during covid? Is it still a nice place to stay a while?
Hey do you know how to ship your furniture to Mexico or like our car? Do you have any suggestions? I appreciate y’all!
Looking for the realtor link… you guys are terrific.
Hey Tracey! Her email is in the description of the interview we did with her - check it out! ruclips.net/video/aT9VZcApA3Q/видео.html
@@TravelWTravis Terrific! Thanks so much!!
Do you have a bathtub? Can one find rentals with a bathtub? Thank you!
Haha no we don’t and Travis MISSES it. They’re not impossible to find but you have to really look!
@@TravelWTravis I have your IG too now so if you need or have any question, please DM me there! Looking forward to meeting you guys!!
Okay. Of course I finally found it.
How did you guys access the internet while waiting on a router? I wfh and this is my biggest concern.
Great question! It was a little stressful, but there's great co-working spaces we used (we made a video on them here: ruclips.net/video/ZRFVDBgU9Mc/видео.html)
Enjoy the Channel and the info . Quick question do you think you could live there on 3000 usd each month pretty comfortably?
For one person? Absolutely - it would be incredibly comfy on 3K/month. We’re living on about $2k a month for the both of us!
@@TravelWTravis thank you for the response guys. Really enjoying your channel. You are providing some good info . 👍🏻
the place looks awesome :)
Thank you fam! Your room is ready whenever you are! (We’re 20 mins from the beach 🏝)
Get the damp trappers ....what part of town do you guys live in??? Me and my daughter are moving there in March....I love your place
Haha we ended up in Temezon Norte, which is *just* outside the north part of the city.
@@TravelWTravis thanks
Your apartment is gorgeous! I have a question for you. Are you close enough to walk to a coffeehouse or any little markets? How far away from the center of Merida are you? We also have no interest in buying a car in Mexico but it might be nice to be able to walk to a downtown type street with cafes, movie theaters etc. thanks! I love your channel!
Hey Tom! Our place isn't walkable to much, but there are plenty of places that are!
So happy to find gay vegans in Mexico. I’ve been searching. We are a gay vegan couple also and retiring in Mexico soon.
Now that you are in your home; do you feel safe there. As a single mom wanting to stay for a few months how do you feel overall about safety
I swore a saw a commercial with you in it earlier, David, but it doesn’t sound like this one has been released yet. Is that right?
Oh no, this one's out! It's playing all over the place, so you probably saw it! The HuffPo article comes out tomorrow though 😊
For your realtor: what are things you should watch and listen for when you’re apartment hunting in Merida that would tell you that it’s not a good spot to live?
I am going from LA to Merida where your recommend me to find a place to stay for a month
We’d recommend looking at DH Properties - their link is in the video description!
My partner and I live in LA and are flirting with the idea of moving to Rivera Maya. Loved this vid and would love to hear about any future challenges you might run into. Utilities, etc. gracias
Oh you definitely will! Thanks for watching Sean!
Happy Turkey...love the house!❤💚💜💛💙💜💚❤✔
Thanks Barbara - you too!
Hola, have you gotten your electric bill yet? How much was it?
We haven’t gotten one yet, but will definitely keep you posted!
