The HG Barbatos is the Gunpla that is truly accurate to the anime's Gundam Frame designs and by far my top 1 favorite in the HG IBO lineups. So thanks for re-reviewing this.

I hope Mecha revisits the other kits in the line too. He dissed a few of them, and glossed over giving most a proper review. But that's probably because he was drunk in a lot of those like he mentioned in the Atlas revisit. I maybe mistaken, but I distinctly remember him disliking the design of Teiwaz mechs, which is weird since they were designed by Wataru Inata, who worked on AC6 and also designed the Peil mechs in G-Witch. Heck, even though it was designed by Ippei Gyoubu, he definitely did not like the Hugo, and unfavorably compared it to Metal Gear Rex in its review, which was funny, but comes off as disingenuous on a rewatch since that was the crux of his criticism then. Even if he doesn't buy new kits to build, just taking his old IBO kits from storage and working on them a bit would be enough; give them a bit of TLC with some panel lines, joint tightening, marker paint, and review them with the clarity they deserve, however differently his opinion changes. I'm sure it'll be more easy going and less time-consuming than building fresh kits ground up.
Hg barbatos was one of the very first gunplay kits I ever built, before I had ever even seen a Gundam show. Because of this kit I ended up watching IBO, and it became one of the most personaly important anime I had ever seen. Barbatos is the reason I'm a Gundam fan. And to this day IBO is my favorite anime
IBO was the first Gundam franchise that I was absolutely enamored with. Sure I knew about Gundam with beam sabers and the like but there was something so cool about Barbatos emerging from the ground and absolutely pulverizing that Graze. Chicks dig giant robots and we dig giant robots that are metal on metal cause its so primal.
I always loved the IBO kits. Out from the box, they already have so much detail, but it is the parts interchangeability with other kits in the line. You can built a custom Gundam Frame by mix and matching parts, Graze army with building your own custom commander unit and units with weapon storage.
I had not been in the gunpla hobby for over 20 years so these newer HG kits have been incredible compared to the old no grade kits I originally had. Every kit has needed some work or paint since the hobby of model building began and its still getting better every release. Hearing all these problems people have with and kit released within the last 20 years boggles my mind, I think they are incredibly well designed regardless of any hobby work needed or not. The ibo modular inner frame on the HG's are so genius I am surprised they dont make a few hundred kits from them along with a couple major series to watch.
The Hg Barbatos Lupus was the kit that paved the way for the beginning of my gunpla journey, i remembered how joyful and excited i was cutting all those nubs with only a wire cutter. I've built quite a collection till this day but even how more expensive or better quality newer gunplas have, none of those could brought me back to the emotions i had with Hg Barbatos Lupus. I would pay anything to live back the moment, the first ever gunpla that i've built.
I got my friend to build this kit as his first. He enjoyed it outside of the loose joint issues. I taught him how to fix it with the super glue method so now he has something he really likes.
I just got into Gunpla last month and this was my 2nd build ever! Decided to try my hand at painting it and couldn't be happier with how it came out. Great kit and no complaints here

So the blue Bandai Logo meaning re-prints of the kit? Ah that explains it. About drying the topcoat, it is best to buy a dish dryer with slideable cover so the kit stay dried there. ^^
I didn't plan buying this exact kit because I was already satisfied with the MG but I got the chance to pick it up so I did. No regrets at all and a very nice kit to play around with for dynamic or silly poses.
My small tip for tightening the joints for the IBO kits series is to use a small torn tissue to tighten the joints, especially those ball joints and the hip joints. Works fine for me😊
imagine if HG IBO were released in this current year with current plamo technology....it would be something like modern RG post-unicorn, solid and sturdy
I absolutely love the HGIBO line. Despite their flaws, they're absolutely fantastic when you put work into them. (pfp checks out, I know.) By the way, option set 5 (as shown at around 12:48) isn't actually the proper set for open hands when it comes to this version of Barbie as it doesn't have the small white claws Lupus has. What you want for this Barbatos (and like 80% or the other IBO Gundams) is option set 7. Since Vidar's hands are just plain Gundam frame hands with no claws or anything attached, they work fine canonically with Barbie forms 1-6, Flauros, Gusion, Bael, Kimaris, etc. Just swap out the back of the hands.
This was my first and only Ibo model kit from the line and I had a lot of fun posing it but after about a few years I went back to see if I could still do poses with it and thankfully it can still do poses. No weakening of joints and everything still looks as good as it did when I first built the thing. Now that witch from Mercury is pretty much over and done with for the most part, I'm probably gonna go back to see about getting some model kits from Ibo that I missed maybe get my hands-on an Asteroth. Nice re review of this model though I will say I do miss the pilot faces that were on the boxes.
Im so glad we are talking about IBO kits positively again. Sure they have their problems but they're incredible for the enjoyment of build, ease of fixing the main issues, poseaibility, accessories, and the ability for customization. They're honestly some of my favorite quick builds to this day
I think for the sheer customisation possibilities the IBO HG line is one of my favourites, sure not all parts are compatible with all frames but it's so easy to swap out parts for quick and easy options. For the recessed logos I used a thin layer of Citadel's red contrast like a panel liner and it worked really well. Speaking of which I wish Bandai still made the IBO Option sets in small runs, my Gusion Rebake FullCity needs his halberd.
I started collecting gunpla almost a year ago and the first kits that I bought was Barbatos and Lupus. Have the MG that I am saving for a "special occasion". Been meaning to collect more of HGIBO kits. Welp it's time to scour the internet for it
Screwed up the foot on mine after trying to fix the joints, but that is more so on me than the kit. There are a lot of flaws in the final build, but i still had a blast, plus i got an excuse now to buy a duplicate or a junk parts box!
My first two kits were this one and his brother, the Gusion Rebake. Barbatos still hilds fine despite all my noobiness assembling him (I did panel lines, a few detail painting and topcoat), but I can't look too hard to Rebake without it exploding into pieces.

I started gundam with WfM, and I was craving for more but didn't know where to start. So I did what any sane person would do: go to the gundam wiki and look at some mechs. I learnt of the name Ippei Gyobu from my fav MS, Darilbalde, and decided to see what other designs he penned before it. That's how I found it, the king of spiky-over-the-top-designs, Gundam Kimaris Vidar. It was love at 1st sight. That & TRUE singing one of the songs made me decide to watch IBO, and I was not disappointed at all! Kimaris Vidar is still my absolute fav from the series (& even all of IBO including Gekko & Urdr Hunt), so I had to get him in HG form, and the kit is so awesome... with some notable flaws. Mainly, WHY IS THE COLOUR OFF?! Kimaris (& Trooper) both nailed the colour, why then did they change the colour for Kimaris Vidar? It bugs me deeply, and will be there to constantly push me to do a full paint job on it. I was inform by your videos on other newer Gundam Frame kits to glue their chest, so at least he is holding his chest quite well. Oh, and no holding the screw-knee is also a negative, can't make the victory over Bael scene out of box.
Some people shit on the hg ibo gundam frame, and while it had problems, that is mostly from the more heavy designs with bigger weapons weighing the thing down. Simpler and slimmer gundams with normal weapons it holds up great and looks phenomenal.
I love the HG IBO Gundam frames. Shoulder ball joins are my problem though except the Lupus Rex one. That one has unique shoulder ball joints that aged well for me. I thought of buying several copies of Lupus Rex just to give my other HG IBO good shoulders but that would be so wasteful
Ever tried reviewing old HG Victory Model Kits some of the old kits (not a revive) possess early inner frame which kind of a prototype for early RG 1/144 lines.
This was my first ever bandai HG kit and what prompted to really consider the kits quality so I strted buying Bandai despite being pricier than the bootleg kits that I was used to.
One of my first hg kits. After doing the mg freedom gundam 2.0, ive decided if there is a mg version, ill do that above an hg. If a kit im after like Lfrith or something only comes in hg, ill build it.. love this guys videos though
I know the Barbatos is still a rock solid kit for the most part minus the unlucky few that got really got bad joints out of the box. The only issue is that of the Gundam Frame and subsequent IBO kits, where the slapped in a bunch more armor and stuff on the the kit, making the very simple joints of the MS frame crack under the pressure.
Yeah, without a full revision of the gundam frame, I don't see how the newer Urdr Hunt designs can really be made into HG without flopping like a fish out of water.
@@sir_coma60 Maybe the simpler ones like the Gamigin, Zepar and Haagenti can stand on for the most part. The rest though is is basically asking for the entire frame to explode with all the extra stuff bolted on.
Nothing worse than weather change right when starting a new build T_T I started my MG RX 78 2 Origin build, only for our annual forest fires to fill my valley with smoke, then a bunch of rain. So the only parts I was able to primer was the shoulder gun, then had to wait for weeks to pick things back up. Hopefully I'll be able to get the legs top coated and painted so I can get back on track :D
I'm waiting for Mecha for reviewing 3 items on my target list: 1. Protogouyo from Kyoukai Senki 2. 1/100 YF - 29 Durandal Valkyrie from Macross F 3. And last but not least, RG Epyon
There have been quite a few new Gundam Marker sets releases since his last tutorial, and I think it would be nice to see him rank the new ones as well.
Barbatos feels more like action figures than model kit back then, the poseability is top notch. The little inner frames were a surprise back then.

For joints another fix is put a layer of thin plastic cement let it dry before connecting.

this is the only high grade i bought in this 2015-2016 era i still have on display. Weathered and sealed it it still looks so fuckin good
Another milestone was the gundam 00 bringing articulation not seen before , so good they still use it as base kit for build kits to this day

I love barbatos, but for frame i think its much more solid grimgerde with valkyria frame.
