John received strong support for the “Woman is the N of the World” song by the founding members of the Congressional Black Caucus and high members of the NAACP. Not only did they show their support for the song, but also agreed overwhelmingly with the sentiments. So while the usage of the word and the song did not play commercially for his appeal to the large public, the key people that he needed to appeal supported the song. Therefore, while it was a misstep when looking at commerciality and the larger public, I wouldn’t consider it as big of a misstep because he hit the mark with the targeted people.

Yes, I understood that the song was to depict how women are seen and treated in much of the world, how they are undervalued and kicked around like other "classifications" of people by bigots/racists. He meant for the use of the N word to make a very blunt and harsh statement, and it was effective and mostly understood by some in 1972.

I recently put together “The Beatles Timeline” on Spotify… a 217 hour chronological account of everything The Beatles ever touched, including their guest appearances, production and writing credits… so it had to include some of the Yoko material. I set about playing the entire playlist from start to finish while I was at work… and I didn’t skip anything, until I landed upon the Yoko material. I made it through about 80% of it before I just couldn’t take it anymore. It was the only part of the entire playlist that I skipped out of over 200 hours of listening. It is worse than The Shaggs.

    @Venusandjupiteinunion6434 2 месяца назад +2

Matthew what are you doing there I actually find the album pretty damn meat and potatoes what was going on at the time stuff.
As far as the Wedding album, what I like about it is believe it or not hearing John's heartbeat. Yeah I know Yoko's heartbeat is in there too, but how many artists do you know that would actually record their heart beating? None.
I think this album was more sacred to John and Yoko, because it was literally something they recorded the first time they got together.
Was it strange yeah, but but how many artists do you know that would push the envelope to that extent. That's one of the things always love about John.
As far as "Sometime in New York City" I saw John and Yoko on was it Dick Cavett, I saw it I think in real time but I don't remember, but I've watched it on RUclips of course. . And he explained the use of the n-word.
Black people use that word themselves. Because people had always used that word as a derogatory word against black people, and yet they use it themselves amongst themselves.
Nobody in the Jewish Community would ever use any of those derogatory terms against themselves, or any other community would use those derogatory words against themselves. But black people use that word all the time.
And I think what he was trying to say was that people use this as a derogatory word against a certain group of people. And he went with it to the point where he was saying okay we use this as a bad word for certain group of people, and and I actually kind of understood what he was talking about.
I was only 16 at the time but even I got what he was trying to say. And I find this album not the "Wedding Album" but the "Sometime In New York City" really meat and potatoes climb in and listen to it stuff. It's gritty as heck didn't know if I could say the other words so I put heck in there.
I understood that he was in his real protest times. I really believe it or not I really like this album, but know I'm feeling like gee you shouldn't really be sticking up for an album that everybody seems to hate. But I think there is enough controversy on it that perhaps they will never release it I do agree with you on that.
I like John when he was at his rawest. He really pushes his voice on a lot of the songs on here, and try as I might I cannot hate this album Matthew I cannot.
But I thought your parody was kind of funny? I think perhaps maybe they shouldn't have released such a personal thing that was between the two of them. Because there were obvious moments on the recording where it seems just a little too intimate. But to dress up in a kiss mask, I don't know maybe a little distasteful.
But you know what Matthew I'm a fan of yours whatever it is that you call when you watch people's videos all the time. I'm an avid watcher how's that.
But I really thought "Sometime in New York City" was gritty and raw and try as I might I cannot agree with you. I cannot hate this album I just can't. But thanks again for making me laugh at 9:00 in the morning.

I agree with you about it not aging well (and it didn't really hit the right note at the time, either!). I first heard it in 1979, when I borrowed a friend's copy. Most people today haven't even heard of John Sinclair- I didn't know anything about him in 1979, either! Even the newspaper-styled cover was a ripoff of Jethro Tull's "Thick as a Brick" album, which was released three months earlier. I agree with you about the songs, though I also like Yoko's "Sisters O Sisters," and I kind of like the little jam that the Elephant's Memory band does to conclude "We're All Water." Some of the live material is OK, but there's nothing on the album that stands out to me as really good, other than the song, "New York City," which I always liked a lot. Other than a remix and a non-boxset reissue, I'm not expecting them to do anything big with this album. Just look at that song title in the cover's center! They might want to have a covered-up cover, like they had to do with "Two Virgins."

I have this album on vinyl, cassette and CD. It's part of my Lennon collection but never played and I'm in complete agreement with you that this will never see the light of day as a box set of any kind deluxe or otherwise. It is just way too contentious. For me personally this was Johns worst moments on record. New York City and John Sinclair were the only songs of John's I liked. Luck of the Irish shocked me as it's lyrics appear to be pro IRA, then there's woman is the N. Releasing this now, it would not sell and pressure would be brought to bear on Universal to withdraw it from sale I'm sure. It is far too contentious and in 2024 would sully the memory of one of the all time greats in my opinion. And yet Yoko's tracks on this album I like and her lyrics are among her best; Born In A Prison, Angela, We're All Water (Who would have imagined Yoko Ono doing Reggae?). I think that maybe this album needs to sit quietly on fans record racks and unreleased, un remixed or remastered, and I don't think there is anything I'd like to hear from the vaults from the making of this record. Even with his undoubted skill at the mixing desk I think Sean would have his work cut out trying to make this something that fans would like, let alone want. The album cover, a great idea, placing the song lyrics on there like a newspaper, but the photo of Nixon and Moa dancing naked, I tend to think that even that would be frowned upon now, with possible legalities from Richard Nixon's estate. To me it would seem far too much trouble than it's worth to put this out again as a remix or a box set.

You could almost argue the same, for "Run For Your Life" on The Beatles' "Rubber Soul" album. In today's P.C. world, that song could be an issue. The main reason I'd want a "Some Time In New York City" super deluxe edition, would be to get the "One To One" benefit concerts. And those are covered in a new documentary with supposedly, many full songs. And the TV appearances from then. And that will be partly covered with a "The Mike Douglas Show" documentary on the week that John & Yoko co-hosted. There's also "The Dick Cavett Show". But, that was released in full on DVD years ago.

And yet the line that John uses in the song was actually from an Elvis Presley song, it was called I think,"Baby Let's Play House"
It's right in the song 'I'd rather see you d.....little girl than to be with another man.'

What a turd of an album. No way would I buy a deluxe expanded version. John had those radical morons Jerry Rubin and Abbie Hoffman in his ear around that time. Those grifters were just taking advantage of John's celebrity and naivete. The politics have not aged well at all. I'm more offended by the bland lackluster songwriting and performance than the use of the word that must never be spoken unless it's in a rap song.
