I have two of the original 1980s in mint condition (almost new). I was lucky enough to find them at a storage facility where they sat untouched for many years.
I got one from 79 mate and let me tell you it was so hard to take it apart compared to the updated one. Thank you for making this I was going crazy trying to find why it has a solid base made completely out of rubber. I ended up accidentally screwing the base under the platter cover but all is well.
Ohhh! I just bought one off of Craig's List, two weekends ago that is just like this super rare one. The bottom of the base is the same, the platter is recessed the same, it has the small font and the arm lock works like yours, but my motor has the spindle coming up through it like the 1210. It was made in April 1983. Mine also has a sticker on it that says, "Disco Modified, Nov. '83, KC" and I have no idea what those mods may be. Best of all it's in pretty nice condition, (not as nice as my 1976 SL-23 though), and I paid very little! I will be working on installing a Reloop cover with new hinges on it, this weekend.
They are still around - I have one, and two of my friends both have one each...thing is they were never used as DJ decks. Only ever used as home Hi-Fi decks, still going strong today. My mate doesn't even use his anymore, but the tight git won't sell it lol.
I have one just like yours but with the spindle coming up from the motor/base. One piece rubber base, large round plate on the base, old style hinge fittings etc. Serial number shows it was made in June 1983.
Torque and weight of the turntable is exactly the same as the later ones, I have the original 1979 instruction manual with technical specs listed. O, and the spindle on the motor is broken! It should have a little clip that holds it in place, lifting the platter off too many times incorrectly causes it to break.
Hi are you able to tell me the age of mine approx? I have some pictures and I don’t have the serial number stickers…It’s an heavy one, the stickers on top look like yours but the middle stay on the turntable when I lift the plate…Mayby 1981? Thanks
If only that turntable could talk. I should imagine it's been in some interesting places and played some mighty fine tunes down the years. How much would you get for it these days? Due to its rarity (and the fact it can talk) I reckon it'll be worth a friggin' fortune.
I have one. Well sort of now. Bought it a couple of years ago, but used it for parts :'( I still have the lid, top and base, all in good condition. The base is one solid piece with no inner weight like the rest of the 1200/1210s. The only difference to your was that the spindle wasn't attached to the platter. I think I need to restore it.
Hi mate I have One Old TT Technics looks identical like your TT. Can you help me to identify when this was produced this is the serial number MJ4118D092. By looking at your platter looks like some one messed with the mechanism underneath. Platter should come out with the spindle
I bought a pair of mark2s bak in 1997 and 1 was the first model mark2, and yes you are rite the first model did hav a little more torque from the motor. Also the platter was just a bit more slippier..
To Identity from photos have a Look at the Details, Hinges, Screws at the Tonearm (bigger overhang) Types are More decent S and Z in line, Rings at the foot are Made from Aluminium, heavyer aprox 0,5 Kg, serialnumber at the bottom. The old until 1983 are heavyer because There are More Metal Parts instead of plastic, specyaly mounted under start Stop 33/45 knobs They are More resistant in the damping against soundwaves in loud or bouncy Environments, but They should Never be in invironments like that in this days. also the coating had a better Quality so you Can find them often in nearly perfect condition, They are originaly Made in Kobe / Japan on a new production line, around 1987 they stoped investment and maintainance around 1987, the Rest of the Original Prod. line was destroyed in the 1995 earthquake in Kobe, After 1995 until 2002 they produced the worst Quality in Details, thats what i know.
Sorry sir but your Technics is broken! The spindle is attached via a grooved clip inside the unit itself (tap it out the platter with a hammer and see for yourself), your unit still functions because all the magic happens up above where the electronics and the magnet does the work, Also the very same round plate where the phono leads exit the unit is also present in the revised model only it's not entirely visible because the rubber base hides it, also it's unpainted vs the painted black on the 1st issue, last but not least please stop referring to the revised unit as "Standard" because the 1st year issue is not superior nor the later revised version inferior, both are equal in every way minus perhaps a few ounces due to the more recessed design of the originally released unit.
The original first edition is the 1972 to 1979 Sl 1200. Then the second edition SL1200 Mk2 1979. So yours is the second edition, the MK2?. The mark 2 came out seven years after the actual original first edition SL1200. The 1210 has nothing to do with the first edition 1972 sl1200. The sl1200 is just as heavy as the sl1200mk2.

I am lucky to have gotten my hands on one recently that was manufactured April 1980 and is in mint condition, not a single scratch on it

I had a pair from the early eighties, and sold them years ago 😢

Yes the spindle is broken. It should be attached to the base and not to the platter. I have a similar one from August '81.
I've got 1 in vgc all original inside and out
I have an original they weigh all the same only difference is the bottoms the platter is smaller the skinny black feet.

I think I have one of those, the original one that is.
