- Thanks for watching my comparison of the Wangs HD-30 and HD-15! I the HD-30 has a wattage rating of 30 watts with 6L6 tubes in the powersection and the HD-15 is 15 watts with 2 6V6 tubes in the powersection. I wanted to see how much of a sound difference there is between these amps. Let me know your thoughts in the comments! Cheers!

What do you think? Does the 6L6 amp sound better?
For me, yes.
Definitely the 6L6 for me. I especially love them when paired with 12AX7 preamp tubes.
Awesome! I've been waiting for you to do a comparison of these two
When it comes to Wangs, size matters.
You know John, the difference is not nearly as much as I thought it would be. Yes the 30W is a little beefier but in a full mix it's really negligible to me - and I was listening on some good Sennheiser headphones. Those are killer amps and I could be happy with either to be honest. Anyway love your content... great compositions, playing, and production. Cheers!.
And the winner is: John's sick riffs!
That was an interesting comparison. Great little amps. Very affordable for those looking to get into real tube amps but great tones to boot. That riffage at 5:26 blew my socks off!!!
They both sound great for the money tbh! Love the "It's a double wangy!" at the end...lol. I'd love to see what the inside of the amps looks like!
Just had a relisten with some decent IEM's and the HD30 wins with its low end/depth punch.
the different colouring makes more of a difference to the sound i think 🤣👌
I voted with my wallet and just ordered a HD-30 based on your reviews and this comparison.
Super impressed with the HD-30 amp... quite frankly I have never liked 6V6 tubes and this demonstrated that very well. Great demo! Thank you
Love your channel! Could you please add in thrash metal for your future amp demos?
A great comparison again. I wonder how amazing these Wangs sound. I prefer the 30 Watts version as well. Anyway, let me express my appreciation on the slight format change of 'in the mix' and solo tracks integrated. Really cool.
Check out my review of the HD30 and prepare to be blown away!
Hey Jon, just wanted to say congrats on the new tonex interview. Hopefully this will help get your sub numbers up to where you deserve them to be! You're the best! CHEERS
Thank you! :)
Great comparison! Thank you.
This is what I have been wondering...and now it's settled.
...then Wangs made the 100w D Style SSS .....
🤔
You were the reason I got my Wangs amp Jon. Now I might have to upgrade. Damnit!!😅
Haha!
Love the sound of those amps!!!
Same here!
I don't get nearly the same feeling from the 15-watt but the 30-watt vibes surprisingly well for it's size.
The 6L6 to me sounded much richer in the cleans, more of a 3D quality to it, it sounded softer/more rounded with a beautiful bell-like chime, the 6V6 sounded flatter, less bell-like chime, slightly more scooped? I noticed the same with the Crunch channel, there was just so much more of everything in the 6L6 powered amp. The High Gain comparison was interesting too, both had that Recto thing going on, and tho both flavors were really nice and fit in the mix really well, I think I still prefer the 6L6 based amp more, it just seemed a tad richer and a bit more in your face in general.
Yes, I've always preferred bigger tubes. The frequency range always seem larger. It sounds fuller.
They were pretty close. The 30 sounded "fuller" but I think with a bit of EQ they'd be even closer.
Both sound great!
The 6L6 absolutely sounds better to me. Based on your demos alone, I think I'd be very happy with the HD-30.
i love u dude.
Think i'll get one of these 🔥🚀🌶👏👌👍💥
Good call!
Hey Jon great video! What program do you use for your drums? I know you’ve said it in the past but I can’t for the life of me remember what it was.
Steven Slate Drums
In a word: yes.
The 30 watt does sound bigger and bassier, but it seems that the more distortion you added, the more similar they start to sound. Interesting.
Nice tones! I preferred the 30 watt version.
The dad joke at the end 👌🏻
Orange just released a new amp! The OR30. I hope you will get it and compare it to the other Oranges haha.
Would love to but I don't think I'm going to get it
Damn, Jon I think you just sold me on the HD30!
I’ve been trying to decide which Wangs I want, and I think this will fill out my collection nicely.
What was your wait time on the order? Love the purple.
They sent me one for the videos so I guess the wait time is different...
Each amp is built to order and ships direct. Expect about 20 days delivery to your door from date of purchase
Hey John, I like your videos you have good selection of amps. I only have one problem I guess when I buy an amp,, it’s not just playing one kind of music. It needs to be good for all kinds of music. I never heard you playing any searing leads on any of these amps unless I missed them it’s just all rhythm and metal. I’m sure these are capable of great things but I’d like to hear them, that’s the only thing I that bothers me and no offense to anybody.
Love the visibly bent over transformer on the 30. I don't hear a BIG difference other than headroom.
The 6L6 sounds better to my ears, but it doesn’t feel like twice as much Wang as the 6v6 model.
FYI...A 15w amp is approx 71% as loud as a 30w amp all other things being equal. There are tonal and response differences between 6L6 and 6v6. Also the power supply HT for the 6L6 and 6v6 will be different to, so that will also affect the response of both power stage and preamp unless it has been 'scaled' to compensate. Bottom line... there are several factors which will affect the overall differences between the two.
The HD-15 had a more brittle high-end and weaker lows. JJ 6V6S tubes tend to sound like that. The new TAD Redbase 6V6GT are reportedly warmer and smoother. Unfortunetly, Wangs amps used to have poor quality tube sockets with flimsy contacts that can cause problems. Hopefully they've sourced better ones.
I had hoped the HD 30 would have 4 power tubes, IE 4 6V6 tubes, double push pull sounds a little different than just 2 power tubes😊
You should sell the 15 on behalf of Wangs for those who don't want a build time and cheaper shipping 😉
I don't want to sell it, I like that amp :)
Bigger tubes make a difference when trying to push volume, small tubes run out of headroom and start to break up.
If that power tube break up is part of your tone, I'd say more power to you, but when trying to maintain tight high gain sounds you can't have the power section running out of headroom, that interferes with the tone and might sound bad for obvious reasons.
There's also a phenomenon that bigger tubes do bring out more low end from the speakers, the larger output transformer on a higher power tube amp also plays part on that.
Not gonna lie, I wouldn't be surprised if the difference here is in the transformer. A beefier output transformer often times will net you more range either way of the spectrum. The same difference people complain about when comparing low wattage plexis vs the high wattage ones.
The transformers look the same...
@@SonicDriveStudioI was studying my hd-15 amplifier and noticed that the power transformer is oversized. The difference between both amplifiers, is it just the tubes? Will I be able to increase the power just by changing these?
The 30 for me. No doubt.
not bad 6l6 better not by much. i had a marshal had el-84 the clean and od1 were really good never cared for od2 . not sure because of the el84 or the voicing i used pedals to due high gain stuff. which was not my preferred way to get high gain more liked it from the amp.
15W is a better bedroom amp, yes?
1x12 on that? would be different results
duhh
could be just precived bias on loudness
1x12? What do you mean?
@@SonicDriveStudio 1 speaker 12 inch
i mean there are limits to headroom for specific loudness
speakers pushing air and interacting with guitar
for guitar amp to push 60w or 240w
15w into 60w would push the papper cone more
thus in rec situation providing precived more headroom
dinamic change
that a thougth that could be of interest
That 30 sounds THICC
Two Wangs don't make a wight.
Well ya the 30 watt watt is beefier its 30 watt ! U want a real comparison do same wattage amps. 4x6v6 can do 30 watts no problem. There is definitely something wangs here 😂
my frist!
