So, I've started going through the TikTok Art tips video series, pausing at a random moment, and using Sam's face as a reference. I get delight, horror, frustration, revulsion, contemplation, surprise... a whole range of expressions!

  • @anunnacy

    14:30 I do agree on this one though! Maybe not drawing a full cylinder, but if you've got basic knowledge of head/face drawing, loosely starting with a half-cylinder can actually be really good. It gives the brain a much quicker idea of the perspective you're going for when it comes to drawing portraits/faces.
    And like I said, as a beginner I can imagine using cylinders might not be better and the result might turn out weird if they stick too close to the cylinder shape itself. But with knowledge already, it's a good little trick/addition to quickly lay down a face in perspective. Just from my own experience though, might not be for everyone ofc.

    I used to name all of my layers and I've reduced the time it takes me to finish a piece significantly when I stopped. It also made me take things less seriously and allow me to retain a "flow" state while drawing a lot better so... if you're a person who tends to be very orderly (or you have OCD) - do NOT name your layers.
    This may be a good tip for people who tend to be too messy, though. It really depends on the person.

      @@mariastephens1827 I used to name the crap out of them like “skin base”, “skin shading”, “shirt base”, “shirt shading”, “eyeball”, “iris” etc.
      It was all very informative, but it was a complete waste of time. Now I just group layers with clipping together and I name the group, but only of it’s a piece I’m working on for more than a single session.

    • @vaishnavisingh9244
      @vaishnavisingh9244 2 года назад +2

      I always name all my layer, but I have sort of an algorithm for it : Groups (Rough, Rough Lineart, Lineart, Colors), and then the layer is just the parts (Face, Coat, Shirt, Hand etc), I think its easier to name groups than each layer. Whenever I add in base layers, I tend to flatten them onto the actual layer or make a whole layer for shadows and lighting. I also like working in way less layers than my peers (I have seen people with 47 layers and I have like 6-7)

    • @Fleerue
      @Fleerue Год назад +2

      I do most of my work in one layer, especially if its a painting, so I don't really need naming layers
      If the drawing is supposed to have lineart and stuff I make groups and sometimes name them instead, especially if I'll like animate the drawing or export it somewhere else
      Then naming is essential

    4:50 I believe there is also a factor of how you normally draw and are comfortable drawing when it comes to this. Some artists (like myself) find it easier to use multiple layers, and that can keep things neat in its own way.
    For me, I like having more layers since it makes it easier for me if I end up seeing a mistake or want to change the colors later, and I only need to change one or two layers instead of drawing it over again

    There's a technique with water color paining that u put the paper (thats ment for this) in water and let it soak for about 2 mins and then when u paint the paper stays flat and gets less ruind by the paint and its easier to blend the colors... So it probably works with a canvas and acrilics too

    Im 50/50 on naming layers but doing it helps a lot! Especially for color layers that are for light colors. I really recommend setting up folders and naming layers at the start of each step. Ex when I'm ready for colors, I'll make as many layers as I expect to need based on how many colors I'm using then name them after the color or section. Then I can just go through 1 layer at a time and I never forget what I was doing if I need to step away for a while! Kinda the art equivalent of making an outline for your essay honestly

    the thing about boxes is that you're just finding the shapes of a figure/ finding the big planes of a figure, you can also find the angles, make an imaginary envelope basically revising before beginning with details, remember to measure anatomically. I read this in (Figure Drawing Master Class: Lessons in life drawing)

    In regards to the wetting the canvas trick, you are meant to spray the back of a stretched canvas and let it dry to get it to shrink and *stretch* over the frame. If you want your first layer to stay wet longer, add drying retarder or switch to oils.

    i also add water to the back of my canvases, but not for the same reason as that lady, it doesn’t help with the painting directly, it just can tighten up loose cheap canvas. It’s really helpful for artists who can’t afford expensive canvas

    Answering the question: I do in fact name my layers sometimes. Especially the one I name "sketch". For others I sometimes use short one letter names like "s" for shadows, "l" for lights.

  • @Ha-neulie
    @Ha-neulie 2 года назад +7

    Since my friend who uses a thousand layers calls me crazy, I’m gonna put this here:
    Layer 1 - Sketch
    Layer 2 - Background
    Layer 3 - Skin shade and highlights
    Layer 4 - Hair shade and highlights
    Merge layer 3 & 4
    Layer 3 - Clothes, shade, and highlights
    Merge layer 4 & 3
    Alpha lock layer 1 (sketch) and color it to make it look nicer
    Merge them all into one layer except for the bg
    Layer 3 - Rendering
    (Sometimes) layer 4-5 - lighting
    And finally, merge them all together
    Imagine only using less than 5 layers in most of your drawings for a living 🙄
    Couldn’t be me

    13:22 I didn't think about this usecase but someone told me that the canvas (and due to that also the frame) contracts a bit while water (or color) dries on it. To make it contract evenly you should spray the whole canvas with water before starting to paint.
    I noticed that a canvas on which that wasn't done was bent so there is a gap between the wall and the canvas which wouldn't be there if you sprayed it before (I did try that)

    I happy that there are lots of people now days sharing their tips but also sad at the same time because there are too many 'artists' trying to give you their tips and tricks, meaning there are a lot of people helping but not necessarily people that really know what their doing, too many people sharing misinformation on leads to more misinformation and more untrained artists thinking a few tricks will make them pros.
    I am an artist myself and I know I'm not all that good but when ever I do seek tips and information I always seek what I need from actual people who know what their doing and not from an app full of untrained artists who only share mostly terrible information to portray themselves as smart just to reel in the views and likes.
    Don't get me wrong I am not saying all art tricks on apps are wrong, I am just telling you to take all these tutorials with a grain of salt and don't rely on them and actually follow a pro artist who not only knows what their doing but also have many many many years of experience.
