I can see why Carter would say that Gon's character is not as deep as Killua's but I think that has a lot to do with the way both of them grew up and lived their lives up until to the point they met. While Killua was born and raised to be a killer, Gon was basically sheltered from the world by living on an island with nothing that could disrupt his childhood in a major way and therefor turn him into a nuanced character like Killua. It is only now that Gon is out in the world that he goes through major setbacks und trauma. You can see throughout the show (and especially during the chimera ant arc) that Gon's character is getting more and more dimension. Gon might've not started out as an overly complex character but he slowly turns into one with every passing arc.
you'd come to realize he's a sociopath and I love it. i just love gon. and killua is a given. he's a fan favorite
The only reason Gon is a good kid is thanks to Mito's teaching. That kid is unhinged, he would fit well with phantom troupe
Finally an intelligent Gon take that isn’t just he’s crazy. Especially the mention of trauma it’s wild how overlooked his trauma is during this arc in particular.

i like to see them as tower, Gon is an already complete tower, there's not a lot more to devellop, a few brick missing but that's it, while Kirua start from nothing, he took inspiration from Gon to build his tower and achieve massive devellopment, but in fact, Gon's tower isn't as perfect as it initially look, the more the story goes, the more you discover holes in it, hole that gets bigger and bigger, until the tower collapse.

I want to give Killua some credit here. His instinct to run is overwhelming and out of his control. Yet he still made sure to take Gon with him.
Yea underlines how important Gon for him is by knocking him out with all his might so he can just carry him away basically doing it all instinctively in less than a second

Kite was a death that shook me, obviously when he loses an arm you kind of assume he'll die, but then Gon starts talking about how he'll rescue him, and then they cut to that take of Pitou playing with his head. It was brutal

I believe that each of the “main” characters (Gon, Killua, Kurapika, Pitou and the others you will see) are so deep and developed in their own way. Hearing Killua asking himself if he’s worth of being close to Gon, always breaks my heart, because even though he’s so strong, he’s so deeply fragile and alone…I really empathise with him

You guys have no idea how depressed I was over specifically Ponzu and Pokkle's fate during all this.
Back at the start of the Hunter Exam I took a moment to try and pick out who in the crowd would be important later on in the show, and of them Pokkle was the only one that ended up passing the exam. Ponzu was also on that list, and watching them come back just to get clapped by the ants without even really accomplishing anything hurt SOOO MUCH!!!
I think its more just a power scaling thing. To show how someone who was somewhat close to passing the exam and someone who was on the lower end of passing the exam just get absolutely bodied by the ants to raise their threat levels.

Yep, kind of sad because most people won’t watch a 150 episode anime on rewatch, but it’s a really interesting rewatch seeing how Gon was always kind of “off”, and not in a Shonen protagonist or chosen one trope way.

Watch that the author didn’t create gons personality as much but after doing some growing lol I can understand it’s probable that he did this on purpose, with experience creating another show like yuyu, he got to create an incredibly good character personality, on purpose, who knows. Just to add in the Manga, Kite deliberately touched Pitou's En. An Aura so massive and intense as that of the royal guard was such a new thing to any existing hunters that he went to touch it out of curiosity. He pretty much got himself in a fight his obviously not prepared. As Morel would later mention, a moment of carelessness can cause you a nen fight.
I totally see where Carter is coming from both with being more sad over Kite than Gon, and that Gon has no depth. I feel like the reason Kite dying is more sad than Gon is because Kite’s death is very untimely, there was still so much to see from him and if gon and Killua weren’t there he would have been fine ish. As for Gon not having much depth, I agree and disagree. The entirety of Gon’s character is based on one “mechanic” . And while it is a very simple and predictable mechanic, it’s also interesting and unique when you see what happens when it’s broken. In this Arc there’s a lot of times where Gon does something that feels extremely out of character, but when you go back not only does it make sense, but it’s set up. Highly suggest watching a video explaining Gon’s character once you’re done with the show because it isn’t quite what you think it is. I really like a video called “the Morality of Gon Freecs”

I love hunterxhunter but this is the 1 aspect I never liked. I have no problem with kite dying later on, but to introduce one of the coolest power bases and then we only got to see 2 of the weapons. Such a waste, I get they wanted to show how strong the ants were so we could take them seriously, but it's such a wasted character. It makes kite feel like a filler character instead of one who is important. I actually agree with carter here, Gon is my least liked character in hunter hunter, he feels very shallow. He's like naruto but without the depth, backstory, or cool powers.
nah thats disrespectful to gon to compare him to naruto who has never had his ideals tested and always relied on talk no jutsu. Not to mention being so one dimensional in meat riding sasuke. I just watched the video you recommended and wow. I watched the whole series twice but i never thought of it this way but now it's kind of obvious, a eureka moment in my book.
Definitely recommend the video as it explains so much about Gon. Wait tho until the end of the Chimera ant arc.
regarding gon most of it also attributes him being an enhancer. enhancer in general are very straight forward just like uvogin. they wear their feelings and characters like a shirt. were as transmuter like killua, bisky and hisoka are prone to hide things to the point they are mostly if not all strong liars.
You can be straightforward and blunt and wear emotions on your sleeve, and still have depth. Naruto is a great example, he is "similar" to gon but has more depth, more emotions, more growth, cooler powers, better backstory. And yes he had 1000 episodes, but even comparing hunterhunter episode 85 to naruto 85, there's way more growth emotionally for naruto in that time alot happened, whereas in hunterhunter alot happened for other characters, but it almost feels like gon is a side character. Kurapika, killua, the phantom troupe, the ants, netero, they are what makes the show amazing. You could remove gon completely and the show would still be great.

Gon is written like a normal, selfish human child who makes mistakes. That's how most 12-year-olds would act in real life.
Don't make it sound complicated, You just like the perfectly kind-hearted main characters who talk their way out of everything and have random power-ups without any logic behind them.
Gon is a normal kid, but I think that's the point you're missing. Togashi didn't allow Gon to have plot armor just because he's the main character, and I personally love this type of character, They are flawed and more real 😄
His design isn't that cool, and he isn't the best character in this show, but he serves a good purpose in the story.

The thing with Pitou’s gender is that the chimera ant arc was written over many years, and over those years Togashi retconed her design several times. At first, she looked more gender neutral, but changed over time to look more feminine. It’s up to you if you want to call her a boy or a girl since no official gender exists, but considering the final design has boobs, I think Togashi intended for Pitou to be female.
Technically all ants besides the queen and king shouldn't have genders they only present themselves as the gender of the person they were created from.

I need to say, intentionally, Kilua character has a lot more depth than Gon's, thats Togashi design to have a interesting Duo.
Killua comes with a big baggage with his family issues and him discovering what is friendship, and in contrast, Gon is a simple kid who, very much like a kid, is very egotistical, which we see time and time again, he gets mad when bad things happen to those he care about or for him, but he doesnt mind things like Killua who openly admits that killed more people than Genthru. Thats not to say Gon or Killua are bad people, just that they are people, they hold their own ideals and are growing with them.
To contrast Killua complicated view on the world, he gets shocked by Gon's simplistic "We will make it better" view of the world
Its a lot more "in your face" in the manga, because Gon and Killua color schemes also contradict each other
You can pretty much call Neferpitou whatever you want. He/she/they all work. The author of the manga intentionally made them androgynous in as many ways as possible. Even down to the name Neferpitou. All the royal guard's names are two names mashed together. Neferpitou is the only one with both a man's and a woman's name in theirs. Uraume is kind of the same being intentionally androgynous as well.
As a Kite enjoyer, I was in-denial when I first watched this even though I was crying that episode lol Also, same Carter honestly. I love the main characters of this show but Killua is my fave out of the 4 but Kite was up there with them. I get so sad seeing Kite die again lol But you're gonna enjoy this arc for sure, have fun! :D
Kinda lost it when kite died, I never knew I'd be so attached to a character like him for just a really short time.. seeing that scene with Pitou in the lake gives me mad flashbacks and makes my stomach churn

Yup, battles are not just decided on who has the strongest aura. Nen abilities always have the chance of turning the tide, even against 'stronger' opponents.
And he's not all talk either. He follows his own beliefs to the letter in even the most dire situations.
Gon is not a shallow character, he's just a child. Killua didn't have a normal upbringing, a child his age should not be so "mature".. I think it's commendable that the writer made sure the difference between their characters is so obvious. On another note, it was established that Gon is a straightforward kid while Killua is smarter and calculating, which is irrelevant to their backstory. That being said, Killua is also my favorite in the duo, Kurapika's my favorite in the whole show.
Gotta commend you guys for such an excellent reaction to Kite's demise. And the following analysis and discussion. You guys did it great.

saying Gon is shallow is INSANE I know Gon is not as likeable or as interesting as characters like Killua but he is one of the most well written characters I have ever seen in all anime series

I didn’t catch the depth of Gon until the rewatch but in my opinion it’s intentional. We have to remember that this was supposed to be an ongoing series a looooong time ago, so if something feels unanswered or unfinished, just know that there are some questions we will NEVER get the answer to. That’s the trap door with HxH, so just keep that in mind when critiquing certain narrative choices ❤

Pitou is actually a girl! This confusion about her gender only exists because the english translator of the manga assumed Pitou was a trap character and used male pronouns for Pitou in the english translation (the same script that is followed by the english dub too). But even the english translator came out a few years ago on the shounen jump podcast and admitted that what she did was a mistake. Saying that she realized her mistake when she had a discussion with the anime character designer, when he told her that he never thought of Pitou as anything other than a girl.
This is the only time, Kite didnt say it was a bad rolll, so he must have got the perfect weapon for that situation.
A pretty popular fan theory I see around alot is that the weapon he rolls somehow had something to do with him being reborn as that one chimera ant later on.

Let's keep in mind Gon is like 12 yo and has lived his ENTIRE life sheltered in an island. Slowly you can see him growing and finding out that the world is bigger and scarier than what he knew. The anime does great in showing how that affects him mentally, but that's something you only realize at the end of this arc, so wait to find out!
People who say Gon doesn't have a lot going on can't read into subtext. Gon is one of the most insanely well written MC's, and that is true even through the fact that togashi gives every character focus. Not just the MC.

En's a pretty advanced Nen technique. Nobunaga and Zeno (Killua's grandpa) used it in Yorknew Arc. The latter mentioned that he could go for 300 meters, but Kite is also impressive for keeping up a 50 meter En overnight without stopping.

It makes sense, if you look into HxH without context and prejudice of shonen structure, Killua is more of a main character in practice, we hear more of Killua's thoughts, most of the explanations or deductions of arc content are seen through Killua, and in this arc specially, Killua's perespective is more open to the reader, meanwhile Gon's perspective becomes pretty cloudy and only until a certain moment we get his psyche's full exposure. It's amazingly written.
hear me out: one of the peak duos in anime is killua and gon in HxH, one of the PEAAK quartets in anime is yusuke , Kuwabara , Kurama and Hiei in Yu Yu Hakusho.
The journey to get stronger will get a bit boring but I promise when they get back to take kite back it's gonna worth it. Thanks a lot for the update! I can't wait to watch the rest of this arc and the peak with you all!!

And I can see where Carter is coming from and I more or less agree with everything he said about Gon & Killua (except the Gon dying instead of Kite part, like that's just a no) and all I'll say is that you will get everything you are looking for from this arc. Like Chimera Ant arc is made for Carter. The writing and character work is just brilliant.

Also to add to Cannon & Carter's statement about "Gon is guessable", you're definitely in for a ride haha : 😂 Gon is actually surprisingly similar to Eren if you do a deep dive in their characters. They are extremely flawed protagonists who force their personal justice and values on others, but you know they come from good intentions, so you can continue to empathise for them. But the road to hell is paved with good intentions :') you've seen it with Eren, and I think you'll see it more with Gon as well

Early on in this arc you start to see how the rise of individualism makes the chimera ants special, but ultimately it is also what leads to their downfall as a species. Because the hierarchal framework of ants' society is not suitable for individualism. This is what's great about this arc :) I think it helps you explore morality and social construct from the lens of a different species. I'm binging the episode reaction and can't wait for you guys to get to the end of the arc!
Pitou's first attack scene is one of the few moments in anime that gave me real fear, without a jumpscare or using paranormal stuff, just pure natural instinctive fear, and the reaction of both Gon & Kill befitting so good with their personalities only shows how desperate they were too: Or you desperately fight, or you desperately run... It's an incredible scene
