I watched the documentary on this man's life and I was both appauled and saddened at the same time. What is it that they say about 'the sins of the father being visited on the son'. Sykes' father comes across as a pitiful, genial old man, but to my mind it was his brutal treatment of his son that had a profound and catastrophic effect on Paul Sykes life. Sykes was an undoubtedly bright man; imagine what he might have amounted to with a lot less violence and discipline and a bit more love and compassion and positive guidance. The sad truth is that there are many men like Paul Sykes in this country today who think it's great to create sons after their own image. Sykes had two sons and both are serving long sentances for murder. Sad.
He was a loathsome 'gobshite' and a 'bully' and he was also mentally unstable but he was definitely no dummy. Even people with PhD's can have the 'criminal gene' that can lead to a lifetime of crime and incarceration.
