Pardo bites his tongue the entire time when Martin brings up his punk & grunge bands. I'm more in line musically with Popoff, but appreciate them both and appreciate how this channel is nonjudgmental & just a bunch of people who love music.
I got no issue with it at all. It’s pretty cool that we both can talk about such varied stuff.

Anyway, thanks a lot Pete, you have a couple of years on me & I got caught up in the whole punk & new wave thing around 83, but before that, in Jr. High I was a metal kids & you got me to appreciate a lot of that stuff again. Keep up with the great content and experimenting with different formats and shows.

I've always been a sucker for Them Crooked Vultures' one and only album. Temple of the Dog I also really like.
I have really tried hard to like TOTD, but I can‘t stand Chris Cornell‘s singing in his higher register on the record.
That Them Crooked Vultures album is really good. I will say it is as good as the best Queens of the Stone Album : Songs for the Deaf
@@Intermentor Yeah, considering Josh is really the only consistent member of that band, Them Crooked Vultures always felt like an extension of QotSA but with more classic rock influence such as Cream and Led Zeppelin (and having John Paul Jones of Led Zeppelin helps). I also like pretty much every QotSA album except for Villains which never quite hit me for whatever reason.
That's surprising! Cornell can do no wrong when it comes to singing, in my less than humble opinion!
Love this channel and love the wider range of bands that Martin loves. But, Pete really shines on the prog scene and I appreciate both perspectives a lot! Happy Birthday, Martin!!
Mad Season and Temple of the Dog would also make my list. That Mother Lovebone album is great.

Wow, how could I forget Temple of the Dog?! I was lucky enough to see them with Soundgarden, Pearl Jam and Alice in Chains at Hollywood Palladium. One of the best concerts ever!

Not hard rock music but one of the greatest one and done groups was Toy Matinee. Sadly Kevin Gilbert's untimely passing ended what could have been something huge. This album is full of great hooks and every song on their only album is really good.
Someone else mentioned it, 3rd Matinee is a good record too. Not exactly the same at TM. The common piece is Patrick Leonard on keys
Kevin Gilbert should have been a STAR! Outstanding voice and great arranger of melody and hooks! Big factor in Sheryl Crow's early success!
Great video and great pick from both of you. Thanks so much, Martin, for mentioning Rockpile. I know it's not metal or prog, but straight up rock and roll. I love that album and loved that band. They broke up decades ago and I'm still in mourning. : )
The one band that immediately comes to mind is Armageddon. Their self titled album from 1975 is truly amazing. Intense hard progressive rock loaded with great ideas. Sounding like no one else, and ahead of it`s time. Would have loved to seen another album. Sadly, Keith Relfs death prevented that. A classic.

Sex Pistols Never Mind the Bollocks is the best one-off studio album of all-time without a doubt. They released some other compilations but no other studio albums. Thirty some minutes of raw anger and fury

Bullocks' will sound furious and completely relevant a hundred yrs. from now! Steve Jones just burns on this molten disc of piss and vinegar....the riffs are volcanic! Never to be topped - THIS is the greatest punk album to grace the planet!

I'd say "Book of Shadows" #1 with P&G #2 for me.
Got to see them once at Donnington, they were the first band on, but they were awesome. Zakk's best album imo.
Young Marble Giants - Colossal Youth was an absolutely amazing one off album by a Welsh trio released in 1980. Cesspool of Vermin - Beastial Necrophilia was an absolutely excellent Brutal Death Metal album that so far has received no follow up despite the insane demand for more by their many die hard fans. Their songs are really crushing and memorable. Billion Dollar Babies - Battle Axe released in 1977 by the original Alice Cooper backing band was the greatest 1970s Proto Metal ever recorded. Too bad they didn't continue releasing phenomenal albums they could have been bigger than Alice Cooper. Tyga Myra - Deliverance released in 1986 from Post NWOBHM Label Ebony Records. What an amazing album in the vein of Chateaux and Grim Reaper, but even better. I absolutely love Spiral Architect . Pete beat me to the punch, but I am really glad to hear them mentioned. The Sammy Hagar- Neal Schon - Kenny Aaron's ( formerly of the true godfathers of Thrash Metal band Dust , which also featured Marc Bell drummer for the Immortal band that invented the True Punk Rock genre the Ramones, and guitar God amazing Vocalist Richie Weiss who went on to produce KISS) has been a favorite for years also. Dark Star NWOBHM band also released only one album from 1981 , and it was amazing. Very hook oriented memorable songs, and a slight Prog edge. Great show, covered a wide range of bands. Power of Zeus was absolutely killer. Although I really liked the Oran U Tan album, I felt like the early Led Zeppelin influences bordered on tribute band territory
Great show as always, one of my favourite one album bands was an UK band, kestrel, lots of mellotron. Came out I think 1975, sadly it missed the prog boat.

My favorite is Control Denied. Fantastic album and glad Pete mentioned it. Also a band that had only one album(a local band from Louisville, Ky) that was produced by Glen Danzig was Kinghorse.

My favourite may be Burning Tree with their eponymous debut/final (so far) LP from 1990. Marc Ford pre Black Crowes days. A great power trio playing blues/hard rock

You mentioned two things that reminded me of two other things...Beck, Bogert, and Appice reminded me of DBA (2001)--Derringer, Bogert, and Appice. Pretty good record. And HSAS reminded me of Abraxas Pool (1997)--a Santana 3 band reunion, which sounded very much like Santana of that era...which is to say absolutely fantastic. Schon, Rollie, and Shrieve are smokin' on this record.
Abraxas Pool is one of my top ten albums of all-time! Every track is great.

Happy belated birthday, Martin. I'm glad you gave grunge bands some love. Someone on this channel should. Mother Love Bone is where two of Pearl Jam's members came from. And Temple of the Dog was mainly a Pearl Jam project w/Chris Cornell guest singing. Or was Eddie Vedder the guest singer? I forget.
I'm also familiar w/the Coverdale/Page album. I heard it last year and was surprised how much I liked it. I should buy it. I remember their collaboration being a big deal in the 90s but I wasn't a Led Zeppelin fan yet. I also remember the Plant/Page collaboration too. I know Pete is a David Coverdale fan and I like him too. But, I'll take Robert Plant over David Coverdale any day and I'm glad Plant and Page got together to do their two tours in the 90s. I've been watching the concerts on RUclips and they're excellent, especially w/the Egyptian orchestra. And I'm w/you Martin on the Plant/Page albums. They had one album of new material and a greatest hits album if people want to get super technical about it😂😂

Dragonfly - Tales of the Dragonfly Chapter 1, one off album from 1985, great AOR/rock album. Shelter with First Stop, great call with Orion The Hunter. Also the great Jeff Buckley with Grace.
I love Jeff Buckley. One of the most underrated singers of all time. What a loss! Put on a great concert. People should check him out if never heard his amazing music.
My number one would be Trees Of Eternity - Hour Of The Nightingale. One of my all time favourites. Its equal parts beautiful and heartbreaking, one of the very best doom albums, Aleah Stanbridge was a huge talent taken far too soon.

The one that springs to mind first: the La's eponymous and only album from 1990! Even though the band's mastermind (Lee Mavers) says he hates it, it's still regarded by many of those who've listened, as an absolute classic pre-Britpop album. As you can imagine, the backstory to the creation of it is an equally fascinating and frustrating one.
"There She Goes" is the one everybody recognizes.
Lee Mavers couldn't hold it together because of smack. Same with Shack, they struggle with narcotics but produce beautiful pop. 'H.M.S. Fable' is top-notch 1990s British pop, as are The Doves. Listen to 'Cedar Room' by The Doves. ruclips.net/video/GWJ0xr0Zv0Q/видео.html

Love it you picked out Quatermass - on a recommendation from my 2nd hand record store owner pal, thank you Malcolm, back in 93' this was one of the (many) Lp's from that period I bought. Loved it from the first play.
A one album band that I'd never heard of which I found on youtube recently are Grannie an English rock band their album was released in1969 and that was all she wrote, pretty decent stuff ,check them out.

We had a few "one and done" albums in the NW back in the 70s and 80s and some quite good. For Hard Rock & Metal as a few we had Culprit's Guilty As Charged (only a comp track and an `84 demo tape besides before they split up), Lethal Dose, Gargoyle S/T, Glacier S/T EP, Crysys Hard As Rock, Bitter End Harsh Realities (they had a shelved 2nd album came out many years later), Ray Gunn LP, the Kidskin EP, The Heat EP, and the mighty Striker S/T debut from 1978. We also had the great Seattle power-pop Heats Have An Idea LP (they also had a couple singles and a post-breakup live album), Portland's Sequel with their debut LP (they had a shelved second album came out much later on too) and Bighorn and Shyanne's sole LPs.
I already have Bodkin thanks to Pete and his forgotten favorites series. I started to check out a little of Quatermass and Spiral Architect so far both really good looks like I will be buying some more albums here soon. I could only find one song from Martin's pick The Ghost online it does have a late sixties sound to it but I like it. I will check out more of Pete and Martin's picks from this episode. I been really liking the episodes with Martin Popoff. Some really good topics lately and Martin seems like such a humble person with some good picks as well.
Spiral Architect -- YES! I'd put the Joey Taffolla Ultra Blue album in that category.

Definitely loved the Orion the Hunter album in the 1980s, and RTZ as well… kind of scratched the Boston itch at the time when we were all waiting for another album from Tom Scholz
RTZ was great, also the Barry Goudreau/Engine Room solo stuff. The two Delp And Goudreau albums were interesting (Wiki only lists one album by them but I also have a cd single called Rockin' Away from 2007)...Goudreau & drummer Sib Hashian, plus 2 former members of RTZ, had a brief band called Ernie And The Automatics & an album called Low Expectations from 2009. Unfortunately that album title was pretty much dead on (kinda "rootsy" music, not very interesting - "The Good Times (Never Last)" was OK, plus the instrumentals "Hong Kong Shuffle" & "Fly In The Milk") although I think it was a hit...
Happy Birthday! Two honorable mentions: Von Südenfed, which was a collaboration of The Fall's Mark E. Smith and Germay's experimental electronic outfit Mouse On Mars in 2007. FFS as well, who consisted of Scottish Indie rockers Franz Ferdinand and, of course, L.A.'s own Ron and Russell Mael, aka. as The Sparks, and released a fun album in 2015. Saw them live at Lollapalooza in Berlin that year, and they really worked well together, giving the crowd a good show. Damn, The La's from Liverpool, of course! Saw them live, too, rare opportunity, very short set. Legendary record.
The self-titled album of The Awful Truth on Megaforce Records always comes to mind for me. It's a mixture of Prog Metal, some Psychedelia, with layered vocals à la King's-X. Weird and wonderful and one of my favorite all time albums. Some members started Galactic Cowboys after Awful Truth split up, but as much as enjoyed GC, I always loved TAW more.
Exactly. One of the greatest albums ever. Actually it was on Metal Blade. Shame that there's only 1 song featuring David Von Ohlerking released since The Awful Truth, that's The Crab by From Now On on Infected - 12 From Texas compilation. First 2 Galactic Cowboys album are excellent, but The Awful Truth is unparalleled, and that's due to David's songwriting.

Coverdale/Page’s Whisper a Prayer For The Dying is the classic from that album that nobody ever mentions. One of the best album closers ever.

A few of my picks have had archival material put out but I decided to count them anyway. Also crazy how many bands put out only one album in the early 70s but reformed much later and put out more music: Jerusalem, Museo Rosenbach, T2, Leaf Hound, Granicus, Fuchsia, Biglietto per L’Inferno, Alphataurus, etc. I decided not to include those but love them as well!

@@erikberg5363 2 of the band members continued on, and now are under the band name Inverloch. Dusk/Subside ep and full length Distance/ Collapsed album......still sounds like Disembowelment. Good albums.

I’ve never listened to any of diSEMBOWELMENT’s EPs either, have you? Seems like most of the songs made it onto the full-length anyway.
@@erikberg5363 you are correct. There's not much extra leftover tracks that I know of. My favorite Doom band, Evoken, a band out of New Jersey out of all places, are influenced by disembowelment, especially their album called Quietus. You would swear that they sound like a European Doom metal band.

I never realized the Sex Pistols only did one album! Thanks for pointing that out. Their influence/fame obviously goes way beyond that.

Great show, guys! Some picks/comments:
1. Babylon "Babylon" (progressive rock group out of St. Petersburg, FL) 1978 eponymously titled release. They had a couple of live releases after this one, but this was their only studio release. Compared to early Genesis, but a bit darker/quirkier. Classic.
2. You mentioned Emerson, Lake and Powell, but another 'one off' was 3 (Emerson, Palmer and Berry).
3. Refugee, "Refugee". After Keith Emerson left The Nice to form ELP, Patrick Moraz took his place with bassist Lee Jackson and drummer Brian Davison, resulting in this truly great album. Moraz left after recording this to join Yes, but it makes me wonder what might have been if they had gone on to a second release.
4. England "Garden Shed". You've mentioned this on on other programs, Pete. A great progressive rock group and album led by keyboardist Robert Webb, who I believe went on to do soundtracks and such. Again, makes me wonder "what if?".
Great call on Anderson, Bruford, Wakeman, Howe. I didn't think of that one initially, because there have been so many iterations/lineups of Yes/ex-Yes members!
Blind Faith and Derek and the Dominoes - wow, two of the most iconic "single album" bands of all time, why didn't I immediately think of those!

Temple of the Dog would've been my choice. I have a cheat choice as well, this band released one album in 2018, nothing before and nothing since. Totaled is the band and Lament is the album, "blackened hardcore" with great murky production, crushing riffs and sorrowful vocals, and occasionally a fantastic guitar solo

Mystic Healer! amazing US AOR band/project including Mark Mangold, Al Fritsch, Chuck Bonfante and the Kulick bros. They released a s/t album in 98 and disappeared. As always, great show, guys!🍺🤘

The best one and done I've heard.
Listening to the Bodkin album now, pretty cool stuff, the Heep/Rooster/purple vibe is unmistakeable. As a one album wonder I would recommend Mainhorse, an early Patrick Moraz album, I believe only one album came out at the time with some kind of odds and sods collection 40 years later. It's quirky and jazzy and technical and reminds me of, without sounding much like, Gentle Giant. Worth a listen.

I'm glad that Mogul Thrash, Armageddon and Fuzzy Duck came up. I was particularly thinking of the latter two. If its recording and release wasn't so convoluted, I'd throw Josefus' "Dead Man"/"Get off my case" in there too. And also Luv Machine's "Turn's you on" which is Anglo/Caribbean hard rock from 1972 -ish. There's some great songs on it.
The early days of Christian rock are littered with bands/artists that only ever made one album !
Most of them are so ropey, Rapunzel's witch would reject them, but two absolute pearlers that stand out head and shoulders above the rest are Joshua's "And God said....lead my people" which is not at all like you'd think from the title and one simply called "The Last Day" by a band of the same name, from the same year. It's an outstanding album, if you like that kind of thing, and features a jazz saxophonist on soprano and tenor saxes, called Don Lanphere, often playing harmonies with the two saxes. It's glorious.

Heads up, Macca fans, this is a very cool mid 70s power pop album that smacks of Paul bigtime. I think at one point in the obscure history of this little gem, some people assumed it actually was Paul in secret pseudonym.
Anyway, good catchy record and my choice for "one album band"
*yes, they did somehow reform for a 2018 effort, so if ya wanna get technical, then dunk me in the tank. But I still very much consider this 1975 LP a quality choice for this good show.
*side note: I was originally going to select "Dirt Box" by Blackwater Park (a way cool early 70s gem of an album I got turned on to in the early 00s) but, Pete smartly beat me to the punch. So ZUIDER ZEE (1975) it is!

@@mutant_blues Yeah I talked about that in the last paragraph, that reunion album nearly 20 yrs later was hard to consider a real X-Ray Spex album. I don't count anything after the bandleader gets sucked into a cult. I include Dylan's Xtian period for that rule too ;)

Really cool episode! Knew some of Pete's picks as he has spoken about them before but was interesting to see Martin's especially him being a fan of mother love bone. There are maybe a few that I slipped my mind but these are the ones that are the dearest to me.

Mad season-above (alternative rock/blues rock. This is so loungy yet diverse. I always listen to this when I wanna relax. The musicianship is stellar. R.i.p mark lanegan and Layne staley)
Chthe'ilist-la dernier crepuscule (technical death metal. Highly recommended if you are fan of the band demilich. Though there is a strong demilich influence the band still stands out especially with the fantastic neoclassical tinged solos)
Anders bjorler-antikythera (soundtrack/ambient. Brilliant one off album which is a unique experience. Dick lovgren of meshuggah on bass and per wiberg formerly of opeth and anekdoten on keyboards)
Conquering dystopia-conquering dystopia (progressive thrash metal basically instrumental nevermore)
Sunset in the 12th house-mozaic (progressive metal/post rock. Very interesting band that plays instrumental atmospheric rock music. Highly recommend if you like pink Floyd and some post rock bands like pelican)
Disincarnate-dreams of the carrion kind (death metal. James Murphy's band who is one of the most underrated guitar players in metal history imo. The vocals are brilliant too. Classic old school death metal)
Lusk-free Mars (psychedelic pop. Highly recommend if you are into the psych era of the beatles. It also has Danny Carey featuring on one track! Side project of the guitarist/bassist from failure, Greg edwards and Paul d'amour who played on tool-undertow)
Mother love bone-mother love bone (grunge/hard rock. They strangely sound a lot like appetites of destruction era gnr)
Sex pistols-never mind the bollocks (punk. Legendary album with one of my favorite guitar tones)
Effloresce-coma ghosts (progressive metal. They sound a lot like a mix of dream theater and opeth with female vocals who also plays the flute. They sadly disbanded very recently after years of inactivity)

The first that came to my mind is Armageddon from 1975, GREAT album w/ an all star lineup…Pugh, Relf, Caldwell, Cennamo.
Rhapsody. Their sole self-titled album originally released in 1978 and later reissued on CD as Rhapsody (Sweden) - Strange vibrations in 2005, with two bonus tracks. An absolute hard rock gem in the vein of Deep Purple and Gillan - Lots of Hammond, soaring guitar work and powerful vocals. It died an instant and horrible death upon its release in 1978, right in the midst of the swedish punk boom.
Totally worth checking out. I was blown away by it when I bought it fresh from the press in `78.
