    The Leafs are not doing anything until we get playoff performers, and sadly that means getting a new core. This one we botched, and they learned to be scared of losing instead of being hungry for winning, and that makes all the difference in the world

    Sit the players in front of the tv and have them watch every Panther’s playoff game from last year. Clearly show what it takes. 23 hearts pounding together on every second of each game.

    You know people say loosing the C is a big deal but its hard to say man unless you know the guy well. What I saw was weight lifted off his face when he was handing over the jersey. JT just may have beein tired of that resposiblility. Hard to say unless you know him but my sense is when he spoke with the media on a reg basis esp after a loss or playoff exit he looked really drained emotionally man. I can't see Matthews liking answering tough questions based on how I have read him in past. Anyway at the end of the day they made a change....The guys in the dressing room though only know if it was the right move or not.

    Nobody really seems to be touching on it yet but the best thing about Matthews becoming the captain is that he can no longer laugh off punches to the face, or turn his back to a scrum in the corner. He's going to have to be tougher for himself and his teammates because Captains have to throw hands sometimes to make a point to the other team. Captains can't be jumping out of the way of body checks, can't skate away from scrums or make a career out of avoiding the hard areas of the ice. Tavares was a great captain for this reason as he just fights through most of what other teams throw at him but Matthews and Marner have a literal entire career of them avoiding a lot of the hard areas on the ice. This is a good sign that Berube might actually hold him accountable and help push Matthews to find another gear that encompasses the playoff environment.

    • @johnsmith7345
      @johnsmith7345 2 месяца назад +1

      Also Berube is old school he will not allow anyone to rough house the Captain either the team backs him up or Berube will stare you down on your way back to the bench.

    • @webcrawler2007
      @webcrawler2007 2 месяца назад

      @@MrWastedtalent34 no he won't, he will expect others to do for him BECAUSE he is captain. This will only inflate his ego, which didn't need to happen. The Leafs need young, gritty, hungry winners - yet we are left with what we always have, veterans scared to lose, vets with something to prove, and rookies that only learn to be scared of the consequences of losing. We need a fresh start so badly - but that isn't Matthews fault, or any players. It's management's fault for creating the culture.

    • @webcrawler2007
      @webcrawler2007 2 месяца назад

      @@johnsmith7345 Berube will ride that position until he is fired 2 years from now. Not his fault, not a commentary on his abilities as a coach, but certainly a commentary on the inability of the upper management in Toronto to understand how a proper team is built. It's not just talent plus ability - desire matters. And almost no one on Toronto truly has that anymore

    I usually like to determine if the Leafs did the right move by reading comments for those who are jealous / hate the Leafs. If they're happy, then it's a bad move. If you see them complaining and trying to downplay it, that usually means they made the right move.

    Say anything you want, its not a good look taking the C from a player that has wore the C his whole career but his fiirst 3 seasons. Messier,Yzerman,Tavares etc, leave it to the Leafs to pull this classless move!! This was a desperate move by MLSE to try and save what little face they have with the fanbase putting the C on the teams best and city's favourite player. PERIOD

    The self-talk conversation was pretty strange, lol. If you listen to management and not just this year we know how much the team respects Auston and what he brings and not just on the ice. This was certainly the main thinking behind making him captain. Tavares was a good captain, but Matthews is elite of the elite. An absolute monster impact on the ice. 100% WAR analytics. As a former player said, it’s about being the best in the NHL for Auston.

    • @disinformationworld9378

      And this playoff nonsense talk, just pay attention already. McDavid was swept three times in the playoffs and shut down spectacularly in the SC final. He’s the best offensive player and he has folded against good teams in the playoffs. Say what you want about Matthews, he hasn’t been swept by a good team in the playoffs.

    • @disinformationworld9378
      @disinformationworld9378 2 месяца назад

      Leafs fans seem pretty dense on this point including the media: hey geniuses, it’s hard to score against elite defensive teams and elite goaltending in the playoffs. McDavid got shut down multiple playoff rounds and you didn’t even notice it because he lit up terrible teams with awful goaltending. Good for him. Against good teams? Look at his record objectively against strong competition and it ain’t so spectacular.
