Comparing these three devices sounds awkward, but it’s the EXACT decision I recently had to make. I wanted top notch ANC for heaps of upcoming flights. For me: an ultimate deciding factor was use and comfort. APP2 would be a daily driver, as opposed to Sony headphones which would only be on occasion. To me airpods pro sound quality is not comparable to XM4. The immersiveness of XM4 is phenomenal. The bass, not only the sound but punch is important to me. Compared to XM4, airpods sound so flat. That is to be expected from an earbud, there are physical restrictions after all. XM4 noise cancellation is really good, but airpods handles wind and people talking better, I immediately noticed it. Airpods ANC Kinda creates a pressure in my ears, don't know if it's only me, XM4s does not create a pressure. In the earbud realm, the airpods are good. Because of the shape of my ear they hurt, not the most comfortable buds I have used.

No it’s not just you, the noise cancellation for AirPods Pro are shit only because they do feel like pressure in my ear, can’t have it on no longer than 30 minutes, any longer than that my ears get tired and have to take them out. That’s why I always have transparency mode on.
To be honest, call quality is still really bad for all wireless devices compared to wired ones but that’s because of the limitations of Bluetooth as a standard. Listen to the recorded sound from them, it sounds very robotic and filters out the lower frequencies in his voice, most likely to save bandwidth
It’s really shocking to see how good the AirPods Pro is when compared to the headphones considering it’s body and drivers size, and even beating them in some categories like transparency & call quality…
I have been using the XM5s for flights and love them. Bought the Pro2s recently and tested them side by side during an 8 hr flight. ANC for the Pro2s almost as good as the Sony's. Only downside is the battery life may only be suitable for shorter flights. The Pro2s are absolutely impressive ANC and sound wise.

They stay in my ears when running and become unnoticeable. They are tight but comfortable. The sound quality is about the same as the 1st gen buds. They pair more easily with my LG G8 ThinQ and immediately reconnect when removed from the case. The sound balance is excellent, good but not overpowering base and clean mid tones and highs.Cons: The noise cancellation is good but perhaps a little less effective than the Bose ANC on the 1st gen buds. Passthrough mode as not as good as the 1st gen buds making it a little more difficult to hear conversations when in passthrough.
On my speakers, the Airpods sound better by a mile compared to others, but on my current in ears, the XM4's sound better. It could be due to the fact that my ear and my room has different acoustics(and also the fact that my speaker and in ears have different frequency responses, although, as I'm sure you're aware, it's not exactly a fair comparison to compare the FR of an in ear and speakers). The Airpods just have that much more energy in the treble compared to the XM4's and the XM5's on my speakers, however, on my current in ears, the Airpods sound slightly as if the voice is trapped in a box, or rather have that slight telephone sounding timbre, which makes the XM4's sound slightly more pleasing, as it gives the sound a sort of thickness with every strum, although, the bass was slightly boomy. What I can say for sure however, is that I would put the XM5's behind the XM4's and the Airpods pro 2, when I made the comparison on both my speakers and in ears. Just had very lacking energy in the treble, so it just sounds really bassy, with the vocals muffled behind a wall of some sorts, relative to the other two at least. I am curious about the Airpods pro 2 though, maybe I'll give it a listen irl if there ever are demo units that is convenient for me to access.

I have the xm4’s. Like 6-8months (don’t remember) and they’re great but I don’t use them as much as my og airpods. The very first ones are meh but it’s just more chill to fall asleep with/ go with train/ calling,… should I get the airpods pro 2?
@@andredre8712 personally I love the fact that the pro 2 can match both xm3 and xm4 (I have both of them) in many ways (especially NC and ambient sound) and yet is small and convenient. I'm so used to the convenience of putting it in my pocket and using it when I need to. Furthermore, I'm using iPhone and Mac, and the Pro2 works better with these devices.

I’m not good on explaining things but go ahead do upgrade you won’t regret and you won’t use the sony’s anymore.
I just sold my XM4, the Pro second gen are just better on almost every regard except Bluetooth range and compatibility with non Apple devices. The XM4 served me very well, but after using the Pros I just can justify keeping them
So, I own both the WH-1000XM4 and the AirPods Pro 2. Sound quality is definitely better on the sony headphones, however my personal side by side comparaison in-situ with the ANC shows me that I get better results with the AP2, contrary to what we can hear in your video. I know that sounds crazy, but my roommate was watching a tv serie (action scene) and I switched quickly from one to the other back and forth and there is no call. I also read an article where they did tests in studios with pro. equipment and they got -34db for sony and -35db for the AP2. I guess that might also greatly depends on your ear; mine might be the 'perfect fit' for the tip size I put there.
I can't decide between XM4 and AP 2 since there are a lot of bad review about xm5 and the xm4 price is better so I think I should buy Both XM4 and AP2 lol
This comparison helped me a lot! I am looking for the best possible audio quality that Bluetooth may offer, so far regarding earbuds, the sound of AirPods sounds best to me (based on those comparisons through these special microphones in the fake head as a reference point) however there is a huge difference between the headphones (again to my ears) I could hear way more detailed sound though mx4 and mx5 way more balanced and the vocals where warmer (my opinion is that this way vocals are way closer to reality while the opposite feels very processed). I got an s22 ultra and I would love to take advantage of the promising LDAC, never had the chance to use it though before I buy them but at least on paper, it's the best codec for streaming lossless from Apple Music or Tidal. I have some budget earbuds (Huawei 4i) and they are OK, I'll invest in headphones and maybe I'll buy Samsung buds2 pro for their utilities on Samsung's ecosystem and gym/running.
A handsfree is not supposed to compete with a headphone in terms of sound quality, but the Airpod Pro 2 was much higher than expected in the sound department compared to the xm5.👏🏻 Also the AirPods Pro 2's noise canceling was amazing as a handsfree👏🏻👏🏻
Interesting to see how close the in ear buds are to decent overhead cans. Audio quality was the greatest differentiator as expected, but other aspects were closer than I expected. Also the XM5’s improvement over the XM4 with NC was very noticeable. I’ve never used overhead cans (too impractical for me), so this is very encouraging to see the APP2 close the gap, though that audio quality will never match those of headphones with such larger drivers.
AirPods Pro 2 sounds the best. It’s clear and balanced while the XM5 and XM4 sounds too warm. This warm sound masks the details of the sound. Headphone’s larger speakers offer a more powerful and spacious sound in comparison to earphones due to more air being moved. Sound is simply vibrations in the air. The Sennheiser Momentum 4’s are my favorite sounding wireless headphones. Also, the LDAC codec offers no audible benefits over AAC. It’s all placebo.
Great input as always! The debate is still raging about whether LDAC makes a difference. It's just a conduit. What matters more is the source and the ears.
When you talked about call quality, you said that the AirPods Pro 2 and XM5 are close in clarity with the AirPods Pro 2 even slightly in the lead. I absolutely cannot understand why you would say that. To me it seemed that the XM5s did a much better job of isolating your voice and filtering out the wind and Café noises. I could hear you clearly with the XM5s, whereas with the AirPods Pro 2 your voice seemed almost distorted, at least by comparison.

I want a upgrade because my dad love watching movies/ listening to music very loud and talks very loudly in the living room when I’m studying in my room. If you have an iPhone, I think APP2 works for you, by a lot of levels! If you use an Android instead, I think you might wanna look at XM5s, or maybe the XM4 TWS, depending on your preference. I have both XM5 and APP2. Weirdly enough, APP2’s ANC is stronger than the XM5… maybe it’s just the placement of the XM5 on my head? Anyways, APP2 is very comfortable especially if you go outside a lot. XM5s are still great, but I would say it’s not as comfortable as it generates a lot of heat on my ears. But yeh, for the ANC, I think it depends on your head structure. But at least for me, I find APP2’s ANC2 is better than my XM5s

ive owned both airpods pro 2 and xm4 the aripods pro 2 noice cancelation is so much better then xm4, people say xm4 anc are better are the people who arent in loud scenarios , i walk from home to school 5 times a week and people and cars are everywhere, with the xm4 i always have to try turn the noise cancelation on untill i realise they where already on and im suprised how easily people voices go through, the xm4 sound better but you cant here the "better" if all you hear is people around you, all i can say is airpods pro noise cancelation is just unmatchable

Aaron I really like your review you are spot on and so specific. I only have one question. Now I use my Sony Mark 3. I love them. Only now I also have an iPhone. Now when I play games on my PlayStation I use my Sony headphones wired on my controller so I can also talk with my mic in chat. Underneath I put my normal wired iPhone earplugs to answer phone calls quickly. Now I have 2 questions. Can I connect with the newer Sony headphones with cable and with Bluetooth on my phone. And question 2 do you think I can use AirPods Pro 2 underneath my Sony mark 3 so I can still call with them? I hope you can give me an answer.

Commenting as someone who has AirPod pro 2’s and is looking for alternatives that have better noise cancellation and a better mic. I suffer from really difficult sensory issues. The noise cancellation on the AirPods is great and super easy to use. They have become my daily driver specifically because of this. However, the mic is terrible in loud places. It’s like it almost cancels out your own voice as well as the background noise. My friend has them too and has the exact same issue. We both struggle to hear each other and end up getting super frustrated and just ending the call. Ideally I would like the best of both worlds with a good mic and great NC. This is the only reason why I’m now looking at the Sony’s. If me and my friend are in the same place and put on headphones to help with sensory issues we can’t tell to each other so the most recent Sony model seems like it would be a good try. Anyone else have this experience. I would chalk the bad mic up to maybe a bad unit but it’s been the same for me and my friend
I have wh1000xm4 already. Most of the time I am using the wire to get actual sound output from it. Anyways, I was in the same dilemma until I came across your video. Thought that whether I will buy an airpods pro 2 now or later. Like I already have wh1000xm4, should I buy wh1000xm5? Will I notice any difference? hello friend, I am not the creator but if you want the xm5 headphones I would recommend that you sell or trade in your sony xm4 headphones for the newer xm5 headphones.
i think somewhere between airpods and XM 4/5 would be ideal. airpods feel more spacious in the sample but lack mid bass, but on Sony it's kinda too much. maybe with EQ sony would sound better.
Beats solo pro is the perfect midway in sound profile between these two. I own xm3 and AirPods Pro 2. Beats solo pro of course has its own problems like weaker NC and wind noise. 😂
if you want them of outdoors activity and better nc you should but of in doors the xm5 will surely be better (Although I heard your ears can get hot-sweaty after a while)

The broader sound stage and those thumpy mids and lows, while pretty good on the treble sides as well. For sound quality: the Sony's are better for sure (According to me) Portability and comfort: Airpods 2 are the king

Aaron, the AirPods Pro 2 support sharing a second connection with another AirPods Pro user. But it is only within the Apple ecosystem (iPhone, AppleTV etc).
i have airpod pro 2 and xm4..i can say i love airpods pro 2 more on streaming device using apple tv 4k, but xm4 has so much compactible and quality remain same using any devices..where airpod pro 2 only perform better on apple devices..in terms of sound i liked more on airpods pro 2 but xm4 sound is more cinema like than airpods pro 2 spatial (just by inch). Airpods pro 2 has more clearer sound than xm4..i still struggling how to get bright sound but also has some good amount of bass on xm4 at least same level as airpod pro 2.
Today i tried the apple airpods pro and the sony XM5 noice canceling at the same time. I’ve listened to this youtube video on a normaal volume setting like listening without headphones. I actually can’t tell wich one is better when used these headphones separately because i could still hear and follow the story, and both on a same level. This having NC set to the max. But using them at the same time will reduce the sound alot. But, it still isn’t quite. I can hear the voice talking but i can’t hear what’s been said.

@@alejandroconstro the apples are way more comfortable to wear then the XM5. The NC on the XM5 is problably a bit better but the headphone itself gives a kinda pressure on your head. So for me it’s apple indoor and Sony when i’m sitting outside and want to avoid street noises like children playing and yelling. One more thing, Sony advertises to avoid water and sweat, but..the materials Sony uses will make yours ears sweat 🤷🏻♂️ And that feels strange. I mean, I knew this upfront but in all these years of using many headphones of different brands I never had sweaty ears. And now Sony tells me to avoid this but their materials are causing it. It feels like you’ve been scammed. So my guess is, go for the air pods. It will save you halve the money as-well. Battery use is great. The box powers the pods when you’re not using them and the batteries load extremely quick. Good luck. Keep me posted about your decision ✌🏻
Hi, have you encountered a problem with the Sony WH-1000XM5 where the voice guide feature doesn't work with the new headphones even though it's enabled in the app? I tried three headphones and all suffered from the same error, even updating the firmware didn't help. It all seems to be the same series made in June and July 2022.
I am using the AirPods Pro 2 right now and can tell you the sound sample for the song "Your Good Lies" is dead wrong. When I played the song it sounded a lot more like the XM4, but with a tiny less base
I have airpods pro 1st gen and xm4. For daily and casual use as well as for calls and meeting I use airpods but at times for intense music listening xm4 are too good really. It is also very confortable but not made for vey frequent and casual use since its not that poratble.
Comparing Headphones to earbuds is just not fair. The headphones win in Sound Quality and ANC hands down every time all the time by it's innate construction. Of course ear buds are very popular because of their small size and consequently portability where they clearly win. I have the Sony WH-1000-XM4s and many top earbuds. When I want convenience, portability and less heat I grab the ear buds. When I want the best Sound Quality and ANC I grab my Sony's. NO earbud comes close to Headphones in these 2 areas Period......
how about the sony wf-xm3/4? (their anc airbud), i have the wf-xm3 and i dont like them in my hears, and one never want to remain in place...always have to re adjust them whatever the adapter i put in....if u have them , how do u compare them in sound and anc vs the xm4 (i might pick a xm4 or 5 in a near future)

They stay in my ears when running and become unnoticeable. They are tight but comfortable. The sound quality is about the same as the 1st gen buds. They pair more easily with my LG G8 ThinQ and immediately reconnect when removed from the case. The sound balance is excellent, good but not overpowering base and clean mid tones and highs.Cons: The noise cancellation is good but perhaps a little less effective than the Bose ANC on the 1st gen buds. Passthrough mode as not as good as the 1st gen buds making it a little more difficult to hear conversations when in passthrough.

On my speakers, the Airpods sound better by a mile compared to others, but on my current in ears, the XM4's sound better. It could be due to the fact that my ear and my room has different acoustics(and also the fact that my speaker and in ears have different frequency responses, although, as I'm sure you're aware, it's not exactly a fair comparison to compare the FR of an in ear and speakers). The Airpods just have that much more energy in the treble compared to the XM4's and the XM5's on my speakers, however, on my current in ears, the Airpods sound slightly as if the voice is trapped in a box, or rather have that slight telephone sounding timbre, which makes the XM4's sound slightly more pleasing, as it gives the sound a sort of thickness with every strum, although, the bass was slightly boomy. What I can say for sure however, is that I would put the XM5's behind the XM4's and the Airpods pro 2, when I made the comparison on both my speakers and in ears. Just had very lacking energy in the treble, so it just sounds really bassy, with the vocals muffled behind a wall of some sorts, relative to the other two at least. I am curious about the Airpods pro 2 though, maybe I'll give it a listen irl if there ever are demo units that is convenient for me to access.

@@andredre8712 personally I love the fact that the pro 2 can match both xm3 and xm4 (I have both of them) in many ways (especially NC and ambient sound) and yet is small and convenient. I'm so used to the convenience of putting it in my pocket and using it when I need to. Furthermore, I'm using iPhone and Mac, and the Pro2 works better with these devices.

I just sold my XM4, the Pro second gen are just better on almost every regard except Bluetooth range and compatibility with non Apple devices. The XM4 served me very well, but after using the Pros I just can justify keeping them

So, I own both the WH-1000XM4 and the AirPods Pro 2. Sound quality is definitely better on the sony headphones, however my personal side by side comparaison in-situ with the ANC shows me that I get better results with the AP2, contrary to what we can hear in your video.
I know that sounds crazy, but my roommate was watching a tv serie (action scene) and I switched quickly from one to the other back and forth and there is no call. I also read an article where they did tests in studios with pro. equipment and they got -34db for sony and -35db for the AP2. I guess that might also greatly depends on your ear; mine might be the 'perfect fit' for the tip size I put there.
Same for me. Sony is great for a routine/home office. Sounds fuller. But in terms of the versatility, AP2 is a major wjn here

This comparison helped me a lot! I am looking for the best possible audio quality that Bluetooth may offer, so far regarding earbuds, the sound of AirPods sounds best to me (based on those comparisons through these special microphones in the fake head as a reference point) however there is a huge difference between the headphones (again to my ears) I could hear way more detailed sound though mx4 and mx5 way more balanced and the vocals where warmer (my opinion is that this way vocals are way closer to reality while the opposite feels very processed). I got an s22 ultra and I would love to take advantage of the promising LDAC, never had the chance to use it though before I buy them but at least on paper, it's the best codec for streaming lossless from Apple Music or Tidal.
I have some budget earbuds (Huawei 4i) and they are OK, I'll invest in headphones and maybe I'll buy Samsung buds2 pro for their utilities on Samsung's ecosystem and gym/running.
A handsfree is not supposed to compete with a headphone in terms of sound quality, but the Airpod Pro 2 was much higher than expected in the sound department compared to the xm5.👏🏻
Also the AirPods Pro 2's noise canceling was amazing as a handsfree👏🏻👏🏻

Interesting to see how close the in ear buds are to decent overhead cans. Audio quality was the greatest differentiator as expected, but other aspects were closer than I expected. Also the XM5’s improvement over the XM4 with NC was very noticeable. I’ve never used overhead cans (too impractical for me), so this is very encouraging to see the APP2 close the gap, though that audio quality will never match those of headphones with such larger drivers.
AirPods Pro 2 sounds the best. It’s clear and balanced while the XM5 and XM4 sounds too warm. This warm sound masks the details of the sound. Headphone’s larger speakers offer a more powerful and spacious sound in comparison to earphones due to more air being moved. Sound is simply vibrations in the air. The Sennheiser Momentum 4’s are my favorite sounding wireless headphones.
Also, the LDAC codec offers no audible benefits over AAC. It’s all placebo.

When you talked about call quality, you said that the AirPods Pro 2 and XM5 are close in clarity with the AirPods Pro 2 even slightly in the lead.
I absolutely cannot understand why you would say that. To me it seemed that the XM5s did a much better job of isolating your voice and filtering out the wind and Café noises. I could hear you clearly with the XM5s, whereas with the AirPods Pro 2 your voice seemed almost distorted, at least by comparison.
I think the xm5 sounded more distorted compared to Airpods which were more clear and smooth

If you have an iPhone, I think APP2 works for you, by a lot of levels!
If you use an Android instead, I think you might wanna look at XM5s, or maybe the XM4 TWS, depending on your preference.
I have both XM5 and APP2. Weirdly enough, APP2’s ANC is stronger than the XM5… maybe it’s just the placement of the XM5 on my head?
Anyways, APP2 is very comfortable especially if you go outside a lot. XM5s are still great, but I would say it’s not as comfortable as it generates a lot of heat on my ears.
But yeh, for the ANC, I think it depends on your head structure. But at least for me, I find APP2’s ANC2 is better than my XM5s

ive owned both airpods pro 2 and xm4 the aripods pro 2 noice cancelation is so much better then xm4, people say xm4 anc are better are the people who arent in loud scenarios , i walk from home to school 5 times a week and people and cars are everywhere, with the xm4 i always have to try turn the noise cancelation on untill i realise they where already on and im suprised how easily people voices go through, the xm4 sound better but you cant here the "better" if all you hear is people around you, all i can say is airpods pro noise cancelation is just unmatchable

Chose the AAP2, since I dont like the bulkyness for Zoom calls and the airpods just generally seem more compact.

Aaron I really like your review you are spot on and so specific. I only have one question. Now I use my Sony Mark 3. I love them. Only now I also have an iPhone. Now when I play games on my PlayStation I use my Sony headphones wired on my controller so I can also talk with my mic in chat. Underneath I put my normal wired iPhone earplugs to answer phone calls quickly. Now I have 2 questions. Can I connect with the newer Sony headphones with cable and with Bluetooth on my phone. And question 2 do you think I can use AirPods Pro 2 underneath my Sony mark 3 so I can still call with them? I hope you can give me an answer.

Commenting as someone who has AirPod pro 2’s and is looking for alternatives that have better noise cancellation and a better mic. I suffer from really difficult sensory issues. The noise cancellation on the AirPods is great and super easy to use. They have become my daily driver specifically because of this. However, the mic is terrible in loud places. It’s like it almost cancels out your own voice as well as the background noise. My friend has them too and has the exact same issue. We both struggle to hear each other and end up getting super frustrated and just ending the call. Ideally I would like the best of both worlds with a good mic and great NC. This is the only reason why I’m now looking at the Sony’s. If me and my friend are in the same place and put on headphones to help with sensory issues we can’t tell to each other so the most recent Sony model seems like it would be a good try. Anyone else have this experience. I would chalk the bad mic up to maybe a bad unit but it’s been the same for me and my friend
In my experience, the noise cancellation of the airpod pro 2 has gone worse over time. Probably due to the updates.

i think somewhere between airpods and XM 4/5 would be ideal. airpods feel more spacious in the sample but lack mid bass, but on Sony it's kinda too much. maybe with EQ sony would sound better.

Beats solo pro is the perfect midway in sound profile between these two. I own xm3 and AirPods Pro 2. Beats solo pro of course has its own problems like weaker NC and wind noise. 😂

I would love you to help me with my decision. I want some wireless headphones i can use with my new ipad, and maybe the iphone. Aaron, the AirPods Pro 2 support sharing a second connection with another AirPods Pro user. But it is only within the Apple ecosystem (iPhone, AppleTV etc).

i have airpod pro 2 and xm4..i can say i love airpods pro 2 more on streaming device using apple tv 4k, but xm4 has so much compactible and quality remain same using any devices..where airpod pro 2 only perform better on apple devices..in terms of sound i liked more on airpods pro 2 but xm4 sound is more cinema like than airpods pro 2 spatial (just by inch). Today i tried the apple airpods pro and the sony XM5 noice canceling at the same time.
I’ve listened to this youtube video on a normaal volume setting like listening without headphones. I actually can’t tell wich one is better when used these headphones separately because i could still hear and follow the story, and both on a same level. This having NC set to the max. But using them at the same time will reduce the sound alot. But, it still isn’t quite. I can hear the voice talking but i can’t hear what’s been said.

@@alejandroconstro the apples are way more comfortable to wear then the XM5. The NC on the XM5 is problably a bit better but the headphone itself gives a kinda pressure on your head. So for me it’s apple indoor and Sony when i’m sitting outside and want to avoid street noises like children playing and yelling. One more thing, Sony advertises to avoid water and sweat, but..the materials Sony uses will make yours ears sweat 🤷🏻♂️ And that feels strange. I mean, I knew this upfront but in all these years of using many headphones of different brands I never had sweaty ears. And now Sony tells me to avoid this but their materials are causing it. It feels like you’ve been scammed.
So my guess is, go for the air pods. It will save you halve the money as-well. Battery use is great. The box powers the pods when you’re not using them and the batteries load extremely quick. Good luck. Keep me posted about your decision ✌🏻

Hi, have you encountered a problem with the Sony WH-1000XM5 where the voice guide feature doesn't work with the new headphones even though it's enabled in the app? I tried three headphones and all suffered from the same error, even updating the firmware didn't help. It all seems to be the same series made in June and July 2022.
I am using the AirPods Pro 2 right now and can tell you the sound sample for the song "Your Good Lies" is dead wrong.
When I played the song it sounded a lot more like the XM4, but with a tiny less base

I have airpods pro 1st gen and xm4. For daily and casual use as well as for calls and meeting I use airpods but at times for intense music listening xm4 are too good really. It is also very confortable but not made for vey frequent and casual use since its not that poratble.

Comparing Headphones to earbuds is just not fair. The headphones win in Sound Quality and ANC hands down every time all the time by it's innate construction. Of course ear buds are very popular because of their small size and consequently portability where they clearly win. I have the Sony WH-1000-XM4s and many top earbuds. When I want convenience, portability and less heat I grab the ear buds. When I want the best Sound Quality and ANC I grab my Sony's. NO earbud comes close to Headphones in these 2 areas Period......
how about the sony wf-xm3/4? (their anc airbud), i have the wf-xm3 and i dont like them in my hears, and one never want to remain in place...always have to re adjust them whatever the adapter i put in....if u have them , how do u compare them in sound and anc vs the xm4 (i might pick a xm4 or 5 in a near future)
