  • Abbi and Morgan Brass had a double shock when their son Josh was born. First, Josh was diagnosed with Sacral Agenesis/Caudal Regression Syndrome. Then the new parents discovered that as New Zealanders living in Australia, they would receive none of the Australian government support usually offered to locals for Josh’s needs. Now an active ten-year-old, Josh is living life to the full thanks to their persistence and the generosity of others - and Abbi and Morgan want to help families like themselves.

    I am a 41 year old with spina bifida. My parents brought me up in exactly the same way Josh’s parents did. His mum said she hopes he goes to uni, has a part time job, gets married, has kids... I have done all those things and I put it all down to my parents. Good luck Josh and we’ll done to his parents, you’re doing exactly the right things in order to make sure Josh can have the best possible life!

    As an Australian I am totally ashamed that New Zealanders living in Australia do not get help for their disabled children. New Zealanders are our closest neighbors. We are "related". I wish the government would change its policy. How lucky we are that people like Abbi and Morgen have come to live in Australia. They are wonderful people and Josh is magnificent.

      Althaushexe and yet if it was an Aussie living in NZ with a disabled child they would get the same help as any other citizen or resident with a disability

    • @BBWboobie
      @BBWboobie 3 года назад +7

      yeah its not like they come here knowing their child would be disabled and even if they had its not the child's fault , their children are aussies and should be treated and have the same advantage as other disabled Aussie kids , I am appalled our government is doing this to these children .. also I too would like these parents to know they have a awesome little boy there want to swap him for my 23 yr old ??? lol

    Having lived as a citizen in Australia for 23yrs, & knowing the New Zealanders work ethic find it shocking & am ashamed they don't get any assistance, they're paying their taxes and contributing to the Aussie economy, these parents have gone above & beyond and how lovely is Josh

    It’s amazing to see that, Josh isn’t being wrapped up in cotton wool……. They are giving him every opportunity to excel and to become independent: I think that’s what a parent should be doing, not to place limitations on a child, just because they have a disability. Great job : you are wonderful parents. 😊😊😊😊

    That is utterly disgusting, they need help and should get it. They live here, work, pay tax, contribute to society, they deserve the benefits of our society. The Aussie government should be ashamed of not helping them especially when you consider some people on benefits get everything for nothing - thinking here of the kind of women who have child after child after child and never work.

    I love this video and this family so much. His mom’s statement “I became his physio”...moms can do anything!! Helping him compete in wheelchair sports, working with other families to help provide them with necessary equipment, making equipment to help him participate in everything he wants to participate in...they’re just so so incredible!!! It’s impressive enough the way they’re raising their children, and no one would blame them for concentrating on bettering their own children’s lives. But the community they’re creating, the families they’re helping, the empowerment they’re giving these kids and their parents, the positivity they’re putting out into the world.:.it’s mindblowing!!! This little boy will grow up with not only confidence in himself as an individual, but with the confidence that he’s putting so much positivity out into the world!! These parents are raising kids who are changing the world. With loads of confidence and empathy and physical and emotional strength...just incredible. ❤️
    (I’m a paraplegic d/t a SCI when I was 30 years old. I know firsthand the emotional strength it takes to advocate on top of the adjustments to life with a disability)

    What incredible parents and incredible children. I love how they treat him just like his sister. They understand any limitations he may have but help him overcome them or find ways around them that work for him. The whole family's attitude about life is absolutely wonderful. I also am really happy to see a family that does not forsake their child that does not have a disability for the one that does. All too often you see a sibling that just gets forgotten or pushed out of the limelight because of another and it really seems like they aren't doing that.

    Such an amazing parent teaching her child to improve every day. I would be doing the exact same thing. I homeschool my children from birth so that they're at a much higher level than most kids. This would just be a part of our homeschool routine. I love the way she said "sounds like a fun game" lol because that's exactly how I view teaching my kids and sure it's unfortunate he has this diagnosis but it would definitely be fun to work with him on it.

      Life in NZ would probably be worse. The wages are very low compared to here and the cost of living is much higher. Going to the family doctor is 50-70 dollars each time. We moved here to Aus because with 2 of us working full time we couldn't make ends meet. I do about 1/4 of the work here I did there for double the income. My husband works part-time and makes more than I did in NZ with 25 years experience and a Masters degree. Fantastic place to live and bring up kids IF you can afford it.
