Fatal Fury, Art of Fighting, Last Blade, Savage Reign, Samurai Showdown , Street Smart, KOF, etc. SNK out-marveled marvel before a shared universe was a thing. Too bad not a lot of people (especially in the west) know about SNK and how innovator and ahead of their time they were. just look at Terry's reveal on Smash Bros and how confused many people were about who he was. I'm glad that more famous youtubers like Top Hat Gaming Man and Maximillian Dude are shedding some light on this legendary company.
i wonder how a 2 lane battle fighting game would be received nowadays, i think with some new ideas around it could be something really unique and interessant for a Fatal Fury revival, but a very high risk move to take for sure.
I've heard through the grapevine that SNK is currently working on a Fatal Fury revival game in the vein of their recent Samurai Shodown. If true, I guess we'll see whether or not the lane system returns.
I had no idea that Fatal Fury was created by the same guy who created Street Fighter after he quit Capcom and went to work for a different company and someone else at Capcom took over as the creator of Street Fighter 2. It really messes with your head if you think about it.🤷🏻♂️
SNK innovative way more things in fighting games than SF did. As much as Dan is a parody of Robert and Ryo ..Akuma was straight ripped from Takuma. SNK also had supers aka desperation attacks before SF did it
SNK also did crossovers and tag team fighters way before Capcom did. Also the first company to have a weapons based fighter and use of items during gameplay.
If you guys want to enjoy Sf1 there is a remake made on mugen engine, Street Fighter One Remake The Valkyrie Project. Although most mugen games have cheap moves this one has balance and now you can play all the characters available on it, also the engine support gamepads.

@@iwanttocomplain What I'm saying is, that's not the way I see the series. I don't see it as a comedy. The hair styles aren't really all that unusual. A lot of fighting games have characters with hairstyles like that.
I played this and streets of rage before I even touched street fighter. Mastered the genesis/megadrive version only to find out years later it was gimped as fuck compared to the arcade version. Not exactly the greatest fighting game, but it got me to learn basics I'd use later in street fighter 2 so it must have done something right.
I played this back in 93 on my sega when I rented it and I liked playing as Andy at the time because his moves were complex to pull off and becuz he was the younger brother like I am lol it was a great game and can I also became a fan of Art of fighting as well which I favored over this. Can you do that and world heroes because that too is an iconic snk game
It's not so much that the Sharp 68K is 'underrated' more than the fact it cost £1,800 going up against SNES and Megadrives that were like £120 in Japan at the time. If you take it as 15 times the cost of a console, that's like comparing a £4,500 thing to a PS4.
It was the second fighting game i beat in the arcades back in the day accompanied with samurai showdown back in the 90s! I really liked this game since it was something pretty different of the original SF2 game experience i had.I loved those big sprites and the three layer mechanics close to the double dragon, final fight brawlers-beat em ups i played and also loved. The similarities in fatal fury was with SF2 was really obvious and for the people of that era that loved arcades as well i believe was noticeable.I remember trying to see the resemblances in each game & all, making me think from this time that some same people involved in the creation of those games even back then. The most surprising fact however is the fact that the same man behind SF1 series was created this and can be considered the true SF2 game! Awesome video man thanks for sharing!
You got a new subscriber with this video. As a massive SNK fan I have tell you man, this was a fantastic look into the history of two franchises that are essentially half brothers. Well done my friend.
You know the lore behind SF and Fatal Fury. Good shit man i remember stumbling upon the article that had Nishiyama explaining how Hadoken came to be and him moving to SNK.
Ah yes, Fatal Fury. Some younger gamers may recognize the protagonist of the title, Terry Bogard, from Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. Anyway, great video.
My mom bought the Genesis port as a gift and we loved it. I couldn't afford a SuperNes, which Street Fighter was ported to. Takara did an amazing good on the Genesis port, especially the music!
Really interesting video. Fatal Fury is actually my favorite fighting game series ever, and I actually bought a Neo Geo home system back in the day specifically for Fatal Fury 2 when it first released (got the original Art of Fighting at the same time also). I especially love the Real Bout Fatal Fury games, and while I don't know if there's enough info in those particular titles for a full video retrospective, SNK has a lot of great series that I'd love to see get the treatment, including the aforementioned Art of Fighting, Samurai Shodown, and of course, King of Fighters proper.
My first ever memory of Fatal Fury is watching the computer play Joe vs. Raiden at an arcade and being mesmerized by Raiden's size and the awesome soundtrack.
I like how all the FF and SF2 footage is played on repeat to demonstrate how he only ever delivers "perfect" victories. Also: I love how South 'Town' is meant to be a 'City'...
I was never very good at Street Fighter 2 and would constantly lose after standing in line to play. Nobody lined up to play Fatal Fury so I spent most of my time and money at that machine and it became my favorite over SFII.
@@chadbrick67 True. As long as you didn't live in the UK and buy the PAL version, which was stripped back to 24mb, less animation than FF2 vanilla and less characters than the 32mb overseas rendition of FF Special. Eh?

Then after the Fatal Fury series, do a couple of episodes about the other snk fighting games that had characters that ended up in King of Fighters, THEN do a series on the King of Fighters games after that. That would be awesome
Fatal Fury=Street Fighter Fatal Fury 2=Street Fighter 2 Fatal Fury 3 and the Real Bout FF Series=Street Fighter Alpha series Garou Mark of Wolves=Street Fighter 3 I always loved how Fatal Fury and Street Fighter tried to match each other throughout the 90's. Fantastic video, THGM. I'm impressed with your attention to detail and knowledge of gaming history. You were slightly off about Jeff Bogard, but that's not a big deal at all. Thanks for making this!
Guess you forgot to touch on the plane changing mechanism which was introduced by ff1 as well. This plane changing would be the spirtual dad to dodge and then rolling mechanics in kof games. It was only absent in garou where just defend mechanism essentially replaced it, an element more in line with sfiii's parry which in turn was borrowed from the first samurai spirits or samurai shodown outside the US
In a world of clone games back when which had a Ryu-like protagonist. Fatal Fury really was a series ahead of its time; care was even taken to make sure any characters the player chose didn't feel like one another. Even in 1 where each character had pretty much moves with the same functionality - they never felt the same! Hell, the Fatal Fury series never actually had a traditional "shoto" character until Ryo guest starred in Special, with Andy - a secondary character after Terry mind - being the closest approximation until then. It also never had technical clones until Chon Shu and Chon Rei.
One thing I'd like to see are the really unknown fighters. I remember one fighting game back in the day where the fighter's life bars were replaced with a number counter that would tick down as you took damage, and also one of the fighters was a large cat like a jaguar or a puma or something like that. I dont remember the name of it though as I only saw it at one place.
Lots of people find it ironic how I'm not a fan of the KOF series yet I love the Fatal Fury and Real Bout Fatal Fury series and play them almost religiously every day.
The reviewer that trashed FF comparing it to SF2 is a dolt. He has no clue what a QCF is and is drinking that kool aid when Terry and Joe are far more appealing characters than the entire SF2 cast. Andy is lame though.
I would like an episode about the more obscure neo geo fighters. waku waku 7 and far east of eden, etc. Love seeing the deep dives into the classic fighters, but I much prefer when you give your own opinion and a modern take on the series compared to just reading reviews from when the game was released.
More Fatal Fury please! SNK were always like a sneaky, alluring Black Market publisher to me, as after getting my fill of Street Fighter 2 in the arcades I discovered SNK's games, a company and format I hadn't heard of. The many permutations of Fatal Fury rivaled SF in amount, and drew me in to this semi-secret series of games. They and the characters never seemed to be talked about in gaming mags, and so every time I saw a new arcade cabinet I wanted to see more of that world and it's characters. I never knew they were created by SF1's maker, but this fits as FF was like an alt version of SF2.
The 2 on 1 versus battle was one of the most memorable moments of Fatal Fury for me. Truth be told, while FF was a competent game in itself, I hated the 2-lane system, and I never really warmed up to the rest of the game series until Garou: Mark of The Wolves (now that one really deserves a video of its own, that game is a masterpiece and one of the finest fighting games ever made), preferring instead The King of Fighters and Samurai Spirits. With that being said however, Geese Howard is one of my favourite characters ever, and Joe Higashi was one of my mains in KOF throughout the entire series, and Ryuji Yamazaki remains one of my favourite SNK characters alongside Geese. Samurai Spirits 2 was my first love in fighting games. I had played Street Fighter 2 previously, but it was Samurai Spirits 2 that really got me interested in the genre with its colourful graphics, excellent presentation, and for just being a lot of fun to play. If you're going to do another SNK retrospective, please do one on the Samurai Spirits franchise.
I'm a huge SNK fan. I'd love to see you dig into that catalog. The Real Bout games might be interesting given they are kinda quirky (preserves the multi-plane aspect) and a great follow on to this Fatal Fury coverage.

Here's a tiny fun fact. SNK published Capcom's Vulgus in North America for its original arcade release in that region. So yeah, like the video states, they go further back than is normally assumed.
Remember I saw this game and the aes system on an electronics venue in the RAI in Amsterdam. The colors were so impressive. But we all saw it was no SFII.

Every SNK fighter they had made exist in the same universe albeit in different time periods (except for KOF that kind of exists in its own pocket universe).
@@seanmyster6 i heard that too, but i think snk cannot afford such a risk yet, If they really make a fatal fury revival i bet Will be single lane
Love the Dave Perry reference ;)
I had no idea that Fatal Fury was created by the same guy who created Street Fighter after he quit Capcom and went to work for a different company and someone else at Capcom took over as the creator of Street Fighter 2. It really messes with your head if you think about it.🤷🏻♂️
Art of fighting 2 was just magnifique to his epoch
SNK innovative way more things in fighting games than SF did. As much as Dan is a parody of Robert and Ryo ..Akuma was straight ripped from Takuma. SNK also had supers aka desperation attacks before SF did it
SNK also did crossovers and tag team fighters way before Capcom did. Also the first company to have a weapons based fighter and use of items during gameplay.
Spot Dodge, rolls, supers, parries, just defend, ex moves, guard cancels, tag team... The list is long. All introduced by snk.
If you guys want to enjoy Sf1 there is a remake made on mugen engine, Street Fighter One Remake The Valkyrie Project. Although most mugen games have cheap moves this one has balance and now you can play all the characters available on it, also the engine support gamepads.
So all this time Billy Kane was Dave Perry?
@SEEK - R what was his catchphrase? "Im not a games journalist..." or something?
@SEEK - R yes it was games master (i participated in the second series)
The original Street Fighter had terrible controls. Looking back, it’s amazing how a game with no fanbase ended up with a sequel that would define the future of the genre.
Now... WORLD HEROES! Cap 2 is just AMAZING even if the character design is a bit laughable
World Heroes is a bit of an ironic take on fighting game tropes so it is a comedy essentially.
@@iwanttocomplain Not sure what you mean by "ironic take".
@@gr8gmr The characters are caricatures of fighting games tropes like a tribes person, 80's ninjas with silly hairdo's. It's a pastiche of the fighting game genre.
Irony: the expression of one's meaning by using language that normally signifies the opposite, typically for humorous or emphatic effect.
@@iwanttocomplain What I'm saying is, that's not the way I see the series. I don't see it as a comedy. The hair styles aren't really all that unusual. A lot of fighting games have characters with hairstyles like that.
Fatal fury is the force SNK Is the power
Tung Fu Rue! Aha basically Master Roshi :D
SNK!!! The best fighting games creator!
Very insightful, you should alternate the SNK games between : Fatal Fury / Samurai Showdown / Art of Fighting / King of Fighters. Thanks again
Thanks for the video man. I would love to see the rest of the fatal fury games and art of fighting games show up on here.
2 v 1 was a secret stage in street fighter alpha in which ryu and Ken take on bison. Most likely inspired by the street fighter animated movie
Alpha 3 by 1998.
Great video. Would love to see samurai showdown
You got a new subscriber with this video. As a massive SNK fan I have tell you man, this was a fantastic look into the history of two franchises that are essentially half brothers. Well done my friend.
Great video as always! Maybe Samurai Shodown next?
You know the lore behind SF and Fatal Fury. Good shit man i remember stumbling upon the article that had Nishiyama explaining how Hadoken came to be and him moving to SNK.
Really enjoyed this mate, you popped me with the Dave Perry comment. 🤣
Same.
Think the reference would be lost on non Brits though
Cloud Strife probably but I still thought it was hilarious 😂
Ah yes, Fatal Fury. Some younger gamers may recognize the protagonist of the title, Terry Bogard, from Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. Anyway, great video.
My mom bought the Genesis port as a gift and we loved it. I couldn't afford a SuperNes, which Street Fighter was ported to. Takara did an amazing good on the Genesis port, especially the music!
I recently got into Fatal Fury. Awesome series. Cant believe I never played it in the 90's.
The option for two players versus the computer was also in Street Fighter Alpha 3. I remember the two Cammy twins double teaming opponents.
All the story of Fatal Fury, Art of Fighting and King of Fighters rules in South Town. All the characters get known
@Kush Man Florida
I was never very good at Street Fighter 2 and would constantly lose after standing in line to play. Nobody lined up to play Fatal Fury so I spent most of my time and money at that machine and it became my favorite over SFII.
Great stuff Top Hat Gaming Man 😄!
Great thing that people can earn a living online these days during the corona craze, eh?
Finally we get some one on one SNK love!!! This video was better than: TOSSES the hat* OOOOOK!!!!!!!!!
Yes!!!!!!!! Perfect deep dive into one of my favorite games for the MegaDrive/Genesis!
Well, it's really for Neo Geo but OK. :)
Mega drive version was trash. Fatal fury special on the snes was a wonder 32mb
@@chadbrick67
True. As long as you didn't live in the UK and buy the PAL version, which was stripped back to 24mb, less animation than FF2 vanilla and less characters than the 32mb overseas rendition of FF Special. Eh?
@@NeoGeoNinja81 no I had the 32mb version ntsc with ryo unlocked. Big papa style cartridge on my double pro fighter hahaaaa
@Daishin no Dōro I've got all snes and mega drive games on my emulators and also still own a double pro fighter 32mb version so yes I have
Chris Evans Is Terry bogard oh yeah
Terry one of the faces of SNK surprise it's not Ryo or Kyo
Content like this is why THGM is my favorite RUclipsr!
Thanks Tophat. The dave perry reference is also truly golden.
8:46 The two players co-op battles begin in the Street Fighter Alpha series, and is called "Dramatic Battle"
I think Dave got set up in that match there, what a bombshell!!
Capcom da pena SNK es la evolución y la revolución es nuestra bendicion saludos algún latino y algún español
I loved the video, I am a HUGE SNK fan, could you please cover Art of fighting?
Cover the whole Fatal Fury series! Each game in the series is uniquely different, and it would just make a great series.
Then after the Fatal Fury series, do a couple of episodes about the other snk fighting games that had characters that ended up in King of Fighters,
THEN do a series on the King of Fighters games after that.
That would be awesome
Fatal Fury=Street Fighter
Fatal Fury 2=Street Fighter 2
Fatal Fury 3 and the Real Bout FF Series=Street Fighter Alpha series
Garou Mark of Wolves=Street Fighter 3
I always loved how Fatal Fury and Street Fighter tried to match each other throughout the 90's. Love both series man. Anyway, great work on this man, as for what i'd like to see you cover, definitely the rest of the Fatal Fury series and the Darkstalker games as well.
Can't wait to see you review "Space Battleship Yamamoto" in a future episode :)
Fantastic video, THGM. I'm impressed with your attention to detail and knowledge of gaming history. You were slightly off about Jeff Bogard, but that's not a big deal at all. Thanks for making this!
Dramatic battle mode appeared in street fighter alpha before ex3
This game marked the debut of the LEGENDARY kunochi Mai Shiranui!
That would be the second game, actually.
The next one. There were no chicks in the first Fatal Fury
Love the infamous "Dave Perry incident" reference 😂
Huge Shin Samurai Spirits fan also! 😆
11:27 loved the little reference to games master!
I'm a huge SNK fan. I'd love to see you dig into that catalog. The Real Bout games might be interesting given they are kinda quirky (preserves the multi-plane aspect) and a great follow on to this Fatal Fury coverage.
you really give me the urge to play this game.
i also want to say i really miss that they dropped the 2VS CPU mode for the sequels of this.
that would have been nice
also reminds me of street smart, that aalsowas 2 VP CPU's
Good video, straight into the content with not too much self-promotion at the beginning or end, so i didn't have to skip that stuff this time :D
Street Fighter Alpha 2 arcade cabinets had a secret code where two players could team up in a boss rush with unlimited meter, good times.
Yes i was waiting for it and you did it at 2:14 ^^
such a good video again I just had to watch it twice immediately!
Getting Better Topper, Keep up the good work........ Ps: Fighters History (Data East)!
Fatal Fury is the first game in a brilliant fighting game series. I love Fatal Fury, Garou and the King of Fighters games, please continue with the SNK story.
Wish they bring back the series again.
I recommend trying the
Fatal Fury: Battle Archives Volume 1 & Fatal Fury: Battle Archives Volume 2 for the PS2.
It looks fantastic in a CRT TV.
