    I use a 2 and 1/2 inch screw and if you notice on the bait there is at Center hole and I screw the bait on to the fence rail top post and up and around Greenery shrubs throughout the yard and in some cases some blocks will be eaten at least half way during the first 3 to 7 days then gradually I replace the empty ones and very little activity on the blocks occur then comes the smell from those rodents which I can trace find and bury, good informative video Professor Bill have a great day. I would be concerned about two problems with the fence screw trick. One is you guys in CA only get 3 month of rain. In HI we have to keep the bait dry. If the bait is exposed you could have creatures that should not eat it getting poisoned. Best to enclose the bait.

    I think I mentioned how I'd like a tamarind tree, I saw a terrific bonsai tamarind tree. That would be good and suit me for the moment, particularly if it produced fruit. I remember a few years ago I bought a bonsai tree as a gift for my mother and I saw a pomegranate bonsai tree, which I think she would have preferred it had fruit on it, but I can't remember if they were normal size fruit, I think they were smaller fruit, I can't quite remember, but it was quite a sight.

    What happens if an animal eats the dead rat or mouse? Thanks.

    • @GreenGardenGuy1
      @GreenGardenGuy1  3 года назад

      That would depend on the size of the animal, the size of the rat and how much bait the rat had eaten. It would also depend on whether the animal had any wounds. The bait uses an anticoagulant to kill. I have to take these every day because of blood clots. In small doses they are harmless. It takes a large dose and the animal must have chronic bleeding. The baits come in several different types. The ones sold for the home owner are too weak to damage most other animals. The rats need to eat huge amounts. The ones sold to the farmers are stronger and would be used with greater care. Always patrol the area for corpses before releasing pets or live stock. Use traps and glue boards if you have concerns over bait.

    • @GreenGardenGuy1
      @GreenGardenGuy1  2 года назад +1

      It isn't really a trap, it is a bait station. I learned to build these from California Vector Control when ground squirrels over ran our nursery. Later I use them on rats in HI. They keep the bait dry and in good condition but won't allow other critters to get at it. The Eaton's Bar bait with peanut is very effective. Two weeks back I had a massive rat attack as they moved down the Island following wild guava. Two weeks later not a rat to be seem. The cat got two, I got one with a pellet gun the rest ate the bait. Aloha

    It is ironic, not sure if that is the right word, in the last fortnight I saw a rat on my fence at the side of my house, it was night time. I had never seen a rat before, but I had seen a macadamia nut that had the distinctive bite marks of a mouse or rat. I think I had heard a rat in my house ceiling, but never took any action. I put out an old fashioned type newly bought large rat trap and used a piece of salami for bait. No success in the past week or so, but I found some rat poison that my mother had given me a year or more ago. I have put out a length of pvc pipe with an elbow bend and a product called Talon poison. I don't have a PVC, T piece but if I have no success in the next couple of weeks, I will try and find or buy some 2" pipe with a T piece. The PVC pipe I had was only 1 1/2" internal diameter, but the rat didn't look too big, but I will get a larger diameter pipe if I'm not successful. And the last company I worked for was the largest plastic pipe company in Australia, I worked there nearly 10 years and I didn't get the promotion that I thought I was entitled to, so I quit the company, it was a political coup where the Western Australian manager who ended up getting sacked and rightfully so stabbed me in the back and gave another guy the Quality Manager's job. Life moves on and I make my own opportunities, no point in being bitter, you only hurt yourself by thinking that way.

      I can not speak for every place on the planet but in California and in Hawaii the only people that don't have rats are the ones that kill them. The people that believe they have no rats have lots of them. Rats are very sneaky, generally nocturnal and may not disturb your crops. With the world becoming increasingly urbanized most people can no longer see the marks that animals leave in their environment. You don't have to be sloppy to have rats. We are mostly blind to them and often blame birds for damage that is done by rats.

    • @GreenGardenGuy1

      If you have Siamese or Burmese cats or your cat is starving they will eat rats but for most cats a rat fight is a near battle to the death. The majority of cats will not go after rats. My suggestion is if you don't think you have rats then you have them. The roof rat is my biggest problem. It goes through the tree tops where no cat can get it and eats the fruit from my trees. I had a lady from north Hilo telling me the Mongoose was eating here mangoes. One look and I corrected her, it was rats. Much damaged blamed on birds here is actually rats. Folks just don't like to admit the entire Island is infested. Out in the woods I harvest Koa seeds by robbing rat nests. They gather the seeds and stash them for later use. This is miles from the nearest home.

    • @GreenGardenGuy1
      @GreenGardenGuy1  6 лет назад

      A 1/2 Siamese should be a good rat killer for all but those tree rats (roof rats). They are really hard because they don't come to the ground. In California I used to tie rat traps to the limbs of my apple trees. In the morning I would have a harvest of fruit and rats. Here they like to hollow out my Tangelos. Once the eat the core out of a fruit I leave it in the tree and pack it with rat bait. They often come back for dessert and wish they hadn't.

    That PETA crap in CA has gotta go. I got fed up with it, jumped into a truck drove to PETA free AZ - loaded up truck with boxes of AG2 baits.. 3 mos later I ended up with a huge rat compost pile and none in the field. That CA legal rat poison only makes them fatter.

    • @GreenGardenGuy1
      @GreenGardenGuy1  6 лет назад

      I agree. I do not support being cruel to animals but rats are vermin. The dangers of having them around far out weigh the concerns about the control methods. I was standing there when they had to pull all the old rat baits off the shelf in CA. I bought them all and only recently ran out. In Hawaii the hardware stores only have the rat friendly baits but the commercial supply for farmers is still pretty good stuff. The only problem is containers size. A five gallon pail of bait for $90. I will use it all up eventually.

      I have a HUGE macadamia tree, if I don't control rats I won't see a single nut! Not only that they will bring the nuts into my roof cavity and scuttle around at night preventing my wife and myself from sleeping. It is either them or me! BTW when you mentioned cat breeds male American short hairs in my experience decimate rat populations, female American short hairs are more bird killers being lighter and stealthier. My male was an extremely muscular 8.5 kg and an incredible rat killer.

    • @GreenGardenGuy1
      @GreenGardenGuy1  6 лет назад

      Not being much of a cat fancier I guess I didn't even realize there was a breed called American Short Hair. It is only the people that pursuit rats that understand how prevalent they are. I could see I had some rats working my passion fruit on 9/12 when i put out the bait. Seven days later I checked the bait and found that the rats had eaten all twelve bait blocks! The infestation is worse than even I thought. I know where they are coming from. There is an old coffee shack on the next door property that has had rats breeding in it for years. At this rate I will empty the 5 gallon pail of bait I bought.

  • @3000gtwelder

    I wonder if that chemical that is in your traps that you're afraid of the rain dissolving, is bad for the soil and plants? If the rats eat it and crap it out it has to get back into the environment eventually? That's why I like the bucket traps. You have to deal with all the rats you catch though. Good video though.

    • @GreenGardenGuy1
      @GreenGardenGuy1  2 года назад

      The bait stations are placed to stay dry with the mouth tilled down. IF they shift and the mouth goes up the rain and puke smelling slop from bait stays in the trap. The bait blocks I use are water proof and can be placed in the rain with no harm if they aren't in a puddle. The active ingredient is a blood thinner. It is only dangerous in fairly large amounts so the animals have to eat it directly. My cat doesn't see it as food and can't get into the stations. If it effects anything on the ground I suppose it could make an earth worm bleed out if they had a cut.

      It isn't labeled for that purpose. It isn't likely a squirrel would be attracted but they have to cut them selves to bleed out. Squirrels are not as prone to injury as rats are. There are special baits for ground squirrels but I have never seen a tree squirrel bait. I used a pellet gun for squirrel in CA. Hawaii is blessed with no squirrels.

    • @GreenGardenGuy1
      @GreenGardenGuy1  3 года назад

      I have never seen a rat remove bait from one of these stations. This type of station is generally used for many different rodent baits and the only precaution is to wire down the trap. Generally rats eat bait, they don't carry it. Since I have no dog the idea never crossed my mind. Best to get with Vector Control in Alameda county California if you are concerned. They are the ones that taught me to build and use these bait stations. Most commercial bait stations have the same issue.

    • @GreenGardenGuy1
      @GreenGardenGuy1  3 года назад

      @@reginaldstubtoe4185 I am well aware that rats store food. What I said was I have never seen a rat try to carry off a rat bait block. Like most rodents they pack cheeks with food and carry it. The blocks are too large for this and too heavy to be carried in the mouth. In 50 years of baiting for rats I have never seen evidence that the rats carry away the bait. The good stuff kills them too fast for that. One feeding is usually enough. If they did carry it they would stash it where you dog would never find it. You are correct that some of the commercial stations have pegs to hold bait but not all. Standard Decon is a tray of loose grains. Many of the block bait stations do not use retainers. I figure this is because the rats don't usually carry away the bait, they eat it. If I had a dog I would be more concerned about picking up the dead rats so the dog doesn't eat them. Rat's are smart, they breed like....rats, and are highly destructive. I use many diffrerent means of control. If you do not rotate methods and baits the rats will be one step ahead of you. I use traps, glue boards, different types of baits and half domesticated feral cats for control here. It works pretty well but nothing will ever free us from rat damage.

      @@GreenGardenGuy1 Hey I just wanted to let you know I had really great success with this stuff called TakeDown that uses Bromethalin which kills rats with just 1 feeding. After eating a lethal dose they lose their appetite and die within 48 hours. I didn't want to use Contrac because they need multiple feedings before it killed them and I didn't want to keep refilling bait stations every day. Bell Labs makes a Bromethalin product called Fastrac, but I read rats wouldn't take it. This didn't make any sense to me because everything else in the bait is the same as in Contrac, but what do you know, they wouldn't take it. I put the TakeDown in the bait station and they cleaned it out and appear to have died in their burrows because I've seen neither activity nor dead rats in my yard since, and their little holes under my shed have stayed covered.
