I have an interesting story: One time, I was actually falsely suspected of plagiarism when I wrote a history essay back in high school. I used facts that I got on the internet and used it in addition to what was taught in class to write it. The teacher thought something was up because it seemed "too good" and used some sort of tool on the internet to detect plagiarism in student papers. The results came back negative because it was my own work.

My college professor told me a story. His friend was working on his PhD. when another college professor got a stroke. The Dean asked his friend to fill in for the professor until they found sub. My professor's friend had his masters in English and was an assistant teacher. The class was creative writing class.
A little background on my professor friend. He been going to that college for yrs. This is school that he got his bachelor degree. He even joined fraternity back in his freshman yrs.
On the first day of class, he found out one of his semesters was in the same fraternity. He assigned a short story for assignment. Apparently the fraternity has old assignment and tests of students in the past. So his student instead of writing his essay, he decided to take one from his fraternity brother from the past. He found assignment that was from 10 yrs ago and it was in the same class he was in. The essay got an A. He plagiarism it and submitted it. It been 10 yrs and it neq professor so it no big deal and no one will know.
When the professor was reading short story. He found the story so familiar. He knew exactly what was going to happened in that short story. He check for signs for plagiarism and nothing. At the same time's what does that story is so familiar. Then he realize he wrote this story about 10 yrs ago when he took that class. Left it behind at his old fraternity that his student is now member in

I remembered being under investigation for my music class PowerPoint presentation which was only for 1-2 sentences I used for a reading comprehension assignment. I noticed that it took a while for my professor to grade it and when I emailed him to figure out what was going on, that was when he told me. I was so afraid, I couldn’t sleep, barely ate, and thought that my college career was over. He did email me the following day and told me that I would not be in trouble as the sentences I used came from our class power point and not an outside source. I was so relieved and told myself that I would never do it again 😩.

There was another… kinda plagiarism in another Arthur episode.
The episode where binky was doing his research on an art piece that was accidentally placed wrong and got it correct.
And Arthur with Buster did their own art study and just wrote a paper based off a section in an art book.
Which Francine kinda calls out their bs by reading that exact same page during there report.

3:10 Well now, when it came to writing essays I was very good with some of them, even though it would take me hours of writing, proofreading, and sometimes if I'd make too many mistakes and the paper gets a bit nasty from the erasing and graphite bits, I'd have to write a second paper and make sure I read from that previous one. Little did I realize was that all those essays and current event reports would prepare me for my real talent on storytelling. Also, I'm actually grateful that my mom and dad would help me out and give me some pointers on where I went wrong on some parts of the paper. Also I kind of wish I had discovered Wattpad during my schools years since essay writing and book reports would've been way more interesting for me.

Are they using a college-level format like MLA? Knowing Ratburn, I wouldn't be surprised, but if the paper is double-spaced, plus all the stuff that goes at the top of the front page, that alone is a decent chunk of five pages. Given a week, a proper format like that sounds pretty easy.

If you think about it, if college students are using ai for their essays and assignments, they won’t really learn much of anything that will prepare them for their future careers. If they ever graduate, they’ll go into their fields without the extensive knowledge of what they learned in college and therefore would be not that great at their jobs and have a negative impact on society. Some of the students that are using AI to cheat are probably out there right now studying to be doctors, nurses, lawyers, politicians, etc. I feel like this is the point in AI development where there needs to be laws controlling the use of AI, because do you really want to have a doctor who only got their degree because they had AI doing all the heavy lifting for them in school treating you for tuberculosis?
Also AI checkers can be a pain in the ass even for students who did their work without AI. I wrote an essay once for English and I got points taken off because the AI checker my teacher used thought I used AI to write half my essay :/ All that work for a B- because of an AI checker

There was exactly one time I plagiarized, using Wikipedia (before it was seen as an unreliable source by my school, also before they made a big deal out of plagiarism)
I had forgotten to read my book for a book report on Julie of the Wolves, and it was due the next day. I read the summary on Wikipedia, and pretty much typed what it said, but changed it up enough to sound like I wrote it. 😑 I remember a part that said she was r*ped by her cousin and I didn’t know what that meant, but judging by my mom’s reaction while reading over my shoulder, I figured it was something bad and wrote “her cousin mistreated her” 😓😓😓
Anyway, I believe I got a decent grade on it, wrongly so.
I never did anything like that again, especially after the teachers started taking it seriously.
Does feel odd that ChatGPT is encouraged in some places! I hope our future workers are properly trained and not just spouting AI to pass classes. Pretty scary stuff!

  • @MelodyMute
    @MelodyMute Месяц назад +4

Generative ai shouldn't be used at all, even for prompt suggestions. It doesn't just take things from whatever it was trained on. It's meant to turn all that into new content based on what is asked of it. People need realize it's not looking things up on the internet and pulling it up for you. It doesn't check if what its saying is right or not. It's pretty much a scanning machine that also a collage maker.
If you ask for sources, it makes up fakes sources cause it only cares about what you asked. If you want an essay on bugs or whatever, it makes an essay even if it has no info about bugs cause all it cares about is doing what you asked. It will never be trustful or helpful no matter how advance it gets cause not only is it dependent on what info it's trained on so it'll fake what it doesn't have, but only programed to make what is asked of it without caring what it writes. It will twist correct info into bad cause it's only programed to turn what it's trained on into something else.

With the ai checkers: I think that if you didn’t use ai to write your essays and what not, and you still got pulled up, then you would be able to show evidence that you didn’t use it. You’d have research you’d be able to show. You’d have resources that you used. You’d have drafts you’d written. I think you’d be taken off of the ai list with all that!
Not sure if I’d take it as a compliment or an insult if I got pulled up for using ai when I didn’t though…

I'm really bad with regular essays. I always had trouble writing them no matter what. Even persuasive essays and my college essays. I was great with creative writing because I have a huge imagination, but if my teachers had given me as proper essay then I would have so much trouble writing it to the point where I needed help from someone because I have trouble explaining things and getting to the point. Back in high school in my junior year I actually had an English teacher who would really try helping me with my writing and did a lot of poetry pieces sometimes as he liked poetry. He loved my poetry pieces because he could vividly imagine what I was writing, as opposed to the essays that I would have trouble with. It really encouraged my love of poetry though and there are times I still write poetry to ease stress as an adult because that teacher encouraged me so much. In collage I would just use the method that the professor wanted and do my best with regular essays. I took an English course in collage though were the teacher wanted us to do a poem and she loved mine so much that she wanted to keep a copy of it to use as an example of poetry and how to vividly write a poem. She said this to me in front of everyone and I felt so honored because that never happened to me before. So I also feel that it's not just the subject matter of the piece you need to write, it also depends on the teacher/professor teaching the class.

I do think that Chat GPT is a good tool, but using it to write an entire Essay, or book, or whatever isn't good because it messes it up. When I'm writing I do have it proofread what I'm writing especially if it's something long, or something I want to be as flawless with the grammar as possible. Like for instance currently I'm writing a novel, I have used it to help edit the Novel as I write. That's the thing with these things it's like a calculator yes the calculator can help you do math, but you still need to show your work. Writing is the same thing, you can't just look for a shortcut. I go thought my writing with both ChatGpt, and Gramarly to make sure I didn't miss any mistakes. I don't remember this episode. I might have to look it up.
