  • Play shapes every aspect of who your child is becoming and you might not even know what it really is. Do you want your child to have strong social/emotional skills, become a creative problem solver, be confident, have healthy relationships, develop cognitive skills for math and reading, grow strong motor skills and be empathetic? Not exaggerating - it ALL comes through play.
This episode is Layne's mini-manifesto about how you can enter into your child's world, really see who they are, connect on a deeper level and guide who they are becoming all by understanding what play really is and how to support it. We talk about how to understand your child's behavior through the lens of what THEY think they are doing, navigate your dueling agendas and strengthen your relationship through respect.

I'm so glad to hear that my approach of just letting my 3.5 year old play and discover is supporting by others like Lane. Whenever my son shows interest in letters and numbers, that's when I give him a quick lesson and he can already recognise quite a few numbers and letters. But otherwise he just plays, we read books, socialise and go out and explore the world.

This is a really good insight. My daughter is 3.5 and she actually regularly tells me "I have so much important work to do." Or "I am going to go do my work." I always thought that she was just imitating me and pretending that she had a job but now I see that her job is not just whatever task I have assigned her to do but what she determined to do for herself.

So the next time the dishes are piled on the counter, I'm going to start walking on my knees so I don't see it. 🤣

This was a really cool discussion. I'd love to hear more about incorporating play and what kids want and need to do into daily chores/tasks/routines, especially little ones (under 3).

Really enjoyed this! looking forward to trying to be in their world with them. also watching and trying to figure out what they think they are doing.
Small feedback: at times the microphone position was covering your mouths, Lane specifically but it make me realise how much I need to see/watch a persons more tbh as they speak to stay connected.

I would love to hear thoughts on whether to send kids to preschool or keep at home if able.

@@madisonjane9865 Such a good question! We should talk about this on the podcast but the short version is - there are amazing things about both options and you should do EXACTLY what feels right for you and your family. That decision is super dependent on your child's individual needs, YOUR needs as a person, the flow of your family's schedule, the quality of care centers in your area, etc. It doesn't make a huge difference in long-term outcomes either way, so you should feel really free to make the choice that feels best to you.

Layne thank you for explaining the craziness that is my toddler! 😂 Have you ever worked with toddlers that had a developmental delay?! I would love to talk to you more about it since Chloe is slightly behind her peers (she’s 2 now as of last month).

Hi! Yes, I've had littles of all kinds of differing abilities come through my classroom and would love to get into this topic. This would actually be a great conversation for the live call next month, if you are able to make it.
