My favourite Gretzky fact is that if he never scored a goal he would still be 1st all time in points with just assists alone. (Points = goals + assists)

To give you an example of Gretzky's mind blowing stats: this year Connor McDavid and Nikita Kucherov got 100 assists. The only players other players who have done that are Bobby Orr, Mario Lemieux, and Gretzky. All the guys on this list did it one time in their careers, except Gretzky, who did it 11 times.

@@Chaturanger I can't find any stats on how often Gretzky was hit or checked or held compared to others. I'm sure he was afforded a bit more room than the average player, but I can't say it was anything extreme compared to a top player from any other team, and how much of it was due to simple respect and fear of penalties and retaliation or how much of it was due to players deciding to attempt protecting the passing lanes from Gretzky rather than attacking Gretzky himself. I can say I have two vivid memories of physicality against him which stood out for him being as able to take a solid hit and having the tenacity of playing injured which gains players respect from their peers as well as fans. He took one of the hardest hits I've seen crossing the blue line with his head down and got folded in half with his head ending up somewhere between his knees. He got a puck to the side of his head and had his ear split wide open. Calmly skated to the bench for repairs.

Hey you asked for some ideas on players to react to. Since you seem partial towards the wings it could be a great place to start. There are many good names to choose from but the ones that stick out most would be Gordie Howe( Wayne Gretzky's favorite player growing up)(also known as Mr. Hockey), Steve Yzerman, Niklas Lidstrom, and Pavel Datsyuk. That is by no means a comprehensive list and the list of greats outside of the Detroit organization is extensive as well. I love your reactions as you learn more about the world of hockey!
Gretzky had unbelievable talent… but he wasn’t the most complete player on his team.. I’d say Messier was more complete. Gretzky is the best goal scorer and facilitator… he doesn’t win as much as he did without Messier.
These were the years of sports superhumans. Gretzky.. Jordan.. Tyson… these were like gods to us.. I stopped watching hockey when Wayne retired. It wasnt the same. EVERY game.. even if we were down 2 or 3 points.. ALWAYS felt like Wayne would win it
50 goals in 50 games in a season is considered a benchmark of a true goal-scorer, Only FIVE players have achieved this. Gretzky got 50 goals in 39 games.
I'd say the best part about him was that he really made the most of his teammates. They were good, but they wouldn't have gotten nearly as many goals if Wayne wasn't setting them up all the time. The video made it seem like just an energy thing making his teammates better. As another commenter mentioned, if he never scored a goal, just from his assists he would still hold the record for points to this day.
I'm Canadian and lived in Edmonton when Gretzky was with the Edmonton Oilers and won 4 Stanley Cups. However, many of us thought he looked like Princess Diana when he was younger! Right? Once you see it, you can't unsee it! LOL
some other hockey goats you could make videos on: "saint" Patrick Roy (85-03, Colorado Avalanche & Montreal Canadiens) --considered the greatest goalie of all time Gordie "Mr.Hockey" Howe(47-71 Detroit red wings, Hartford whalers)--third highest goal scorer, held the record before Gretzky Mike "the boss" Bossy (77-87 New York Islanders) --highest goals per game, 4 consecutive Stanley cups and most consecutive 50 goal seasons Maurice "the rocket" Richard(42-60 Montreal Canadiens)--First to do 50 goals in 50 games Mario "The magnificent one" LeMieux (84-06 Pittsburg Penguins)--second highest gpg, just look at the stats Pavel "Magic Man" Datsyuk (96-21 Detroit Redwings)--probably the most revolutionary player in recent years Bobby Orr(66-78 Boston Bruins, Chicago Black Hawks)-- Most points by a defenseman Alexander "the great 8" Ovechkin (05-now Washington Capitals)-- will probably break Gretzky's goal record Connor "McJesus" McDavid (15-now Edmonton oilers)--likely the most skilled player to play the sport Sydney "princess" Crosby (05-now Pittsburg Penguins)--resume speaks for itself
Hey love your content! Just thought I should clarify points includes assists and goals. So he didn’t have over a hundred goals or more in a season. He did though score 92 in his 1981-82 season w the Oilers. Which is still the most goals scored by a player in one season.

When he was already well known but still early on he was dating a girl in my Toronto neighborhood & we often ran into him at the park beside the local community centre . Interestingly this is in the same neighborhood “Degrassi” came from . You know that’s where Drake began .
A great year is 50+ goals and maybe 50 to 70 assists, so about 120 points total. Gretzky got over 200 points five times, and over 160 points another five times. His career points per game average is 2.08 points per game, and most other elite players are lucky to get to 1.5 points/game in a career.
when the guy that made the video shows his point stats for each year it would have been a really good idea to also give the second best to give the numbers some context.
Mr.99's best year's was with the Oiler's.his whole Career he played for Edmonton ' Los Angeles Kings, St.Loius Blus and the New York Rangers and was almost a Toronto Maple Leafs in 1996 but they Saud he was too old at the time and no witch I personally wished happened.
The TV highlights of Gretzky suck, Gretzky originally played for the Edmonton Oilers, imagine if Jordan had played for the Raptors? Edmonton is 50x more unknown. But Gretzky a 5'11" 180 lbs Canadian was so dominant in a sport known for violence and physicality that everybody knows his name. When Gretzky was traded to LA he woke up America to Hockey. Gretzky hosted SNL and Movie Stars attend LA Kings Games. G-man hangs with Jordan and Tiger socially. Charles Barkley and Wayne are friends and react to Sports on TNT.
For context on yearly averages for points: there are only 6 players who have ever broken 150 points in a season. This year there were a few guys in the high 130s/low 140s. This man average 196 over a full decade
assists count as points, so gretz didn't have 200 goals but 80-90 goals and rest of points being asists they combine goals and asists and call them "points"
I wasn’t alive for this but I’ve seen plenty of highlights to know he was special. Paul Kariya and Teemu selanne please. Those guys were unbelievable Gretzky even praised em especially Paul he was on pace to be up there sadly with the 6 concussions he had to retire early forfeiting any chance.
Its very hard to find one to compare him with. Lemieux or Jagr? Igor Larionov? Its a bad fit mostly because Gretzky was in a league of his own. He delivered where ever he went in way no one else ever have
Gretzky was a generational talent. His ability was lightyears ahead of any of his contemporaries. The next generation of guys grew up wanting to be as good as Gretzky and some of them are close. If Gretzky was in his prime *today he likely wouldn't be nearly as good. Guys today are bigger, faster, stronger and more agile. The game is more aggressive than it was in the 80s and early 90s. Prime Gretzky would still be a very skilled player in the league today, but he'd never get the stats he was able to 40 years ago.
The thing that’s wild about Gretzky is that if you compare his highlights to most elite players, gretzky’s will seem dull. (Relatively speaking) He made everything he did look easy and effortless. Not a lot in the way of dirty dangles… That alone should tell you something when looking at his stats. Nothing about the way he looks or the way he plus tells you that he is unquestionably the single most dominant player in NHL. And it’s not even close.
The "office" wasn't talked about? He used to go behind the opponents net with the puck and direct the game from there... The greatest. Technically i would say Magic Pavel, overall Super Mario. But the Gretz did it all for hockey.
The most points in a season by someone NOT named Gretzky or Lemieux is Steve Yzerman at 155. If a player averaged 155 points every single year for an 18 year career, he would still be 67 points behind Gretzky. THE GREAT ONE
Not quite. A team averages maybe three GOALS a game. That does not account for assists. Each goal may or may not be more than one point for the individual players because the stats have slightly different parameters.
Yes, as a man, you can appreciate he is attractive without being attracted. Beauty can be found everywhere, and there is nothing wrong with taking a moment to appreciate it.
He is definitely someone who raised the bar. You may also want to check out Mario Lemieux. Also, don't think that points and goals are the same thing. Points are goals plus assists. Teams average about three goals a game. Gretzky averaged two points per game.
If lebron played hockey, his vision or pass first mentality woulf have gotten him more praise compaired to the nba. Completely different sports and players I know, I'm talking about the mindset he has. It would have fit hockey better than basketball due to the higher number of players, lines, rarity of goals ect.

The goat conversation no matter what sport always bugs me. The reality is today's athletes are standing on the shoulders of those who came before them. You can't compare goats in different eras. hockey was not the same sport in the 80s.
True, the NHL of the 80s was quite different from today, the top scorers then were putting up numbers far higher than current players were for several reasons, one of which was goaltending wasn't nearly as focused in on as it is today. Sure, they had a lot of great goaltenders even in the 80s, but high-scoring games for both teams were not unheard of and were more common than they are now. I still believe that Gretzky is the GOAT, but as you said, it's hard to compare eras one-to-one.
I feel in any era of sport, the great athletes would have been successful regardless. If players like Babe Ruth, Willie Mays, Gordie Howe, Gretzky, etc. were raised in this era of sports with the same training, nutrition information, and other things given to athletes in the modern era, the athletes of the past would have still been successful. In an interview Gretzky admitted he would have had a tougher time in this era of hockey but would have also found a way to beating this era of hockey. If growing up in this time period where nutrition, training techniques, etc are well known, Gretzky would have probably still have been a phenomenon at age 10.
Delusional. Nobody changed the game more than Gretsky. Nobody came close to his records. Ppl who say Orr was the GOAT are huffing nostalgia copium. Its irrefutable that Gretsky was leagues beyond Orr both in impact on the progression of the game and performance within the game.

Gretzky stats are bulshit...Nobody touched him...Being from the South, never watched hockey until the mid 90's. Heard from a number of people, being very talented but also nobody ever hit him, just let him skate by and take his shot... Any truth to that? Would Gretzky have been an average player if he was checked at the Blue Line?
If Gretzky got cheap shotted as much as Orr or Lemieux he wouldn’t have lasted 3 years and not even in the conversations as greatest player ever.
@@novascotia8192 According to Georges Laraque in an interview, unwritten law: you don't hit Gretzky...with this law : Lemieux, Bossy, Lindros, others would have scored 1200 goals...Did you watch some games. It was ridiculous...
They have GOAT conversations in every sport, in hockey there is no conversation, only consensus.
Gretzky had unbelievable talent… but he wasn’t the most complete player on his team.. I’d say Messier was more complete. Gretzky is the best goal scorer and facilitator… he doesn’t win as much as he did without Messier.
Most of the records he broke or set was in an Oilers uniform, yet this video kept showing clips of him in his Kings and Rangers years.
LOL
some other hockey goats you could make videos on:
"saint" Patrick Roy (85-03, Colorado Avalanche & Montreal Canadiens) --considered the greatest goalie of all time
Gordie "Mr.Hockey" Howe(47-71 Detroit red wings, Hartford whalers)--third highest goal scorer, held the record before Gretzky
Mike "the boss" Bossy (77-87 New York Islanders) --highest goals per game, 4 consecutive Stanley cups and most consecutive 50 goal seasons
Maurice "the rocket" Richard(42-60 Montreal Canadiens)--First to do 50 goals in 50 games
Mario "The magnificent one" LeMieux (84-06 Pittsburg Penguins)--second highest gpg, just look at the stats
Pavel "Magic Man" Datsyuk (96-21 Detroit Redwings)--probably the most revolutionary player in recent years
Bobby Orr(66-78 Boston Bruins, Chicago Black Hawks)-- Most points by a defenseman
Alexander "the great 8" Ovechkin (05-now Washington Capitals)-- will probably break Gretzky's goal record
Connor "McJesus" McDavid (15-now Edmonton oilers)--likely the most skilled player to play the sport
Sydney "princess" Crosby (05-now Pittsburg Penguins)--resume speaks for itself
Hey love your content! Just thought I should clarify points includes assists and goals. So he didn’t have over a hundred goals or more in a season. He did though score 92 in his 1981-82 season w the Oilers. Which is still the most goals scored by a player in one season.
gretz and mcdavid comment made me laugh, thats so real lmfao
Lol the No Diddy 😂💀
One of my favorite stats of Wayne’s is in the strike year. He scored 50 goals in 30 games.

When he was already well known but still early on he was dating a girl in my Toronto neighborhood & we often ran into him at the park beside the local community centre .
Interestingly this is in the same neighborhood “Degrassi” came from .
You know that’s where Drake began .
If gretzky had not scored a goal he would still lead everyone in point and he almost scored 1000 goals
If you average 25 goals in your career you had a great career.
Mr.99's best year's was with the Oiler's.his whole Career he played for Edmonton ' Los Angeles Kings, St.Loius Blus and the New York Rangers and was almost a Toronto Maple Leafs in 1996 but they Saud he was too old at the time and no witch I personally wished happened.
watch wayne play hockey when he was 8 years old one game he scored 6 goals against players 3 years older than him
He's the Larry Bird of Hockey. They don't call him The Great One for nothing
He was so good, when he retired, the league retired his number league wide. There will never be another jersey number 99
For context on yearly averages for points: there are only 6 players who have ever broken 150 points in a season. This year there were a few guys in the high 130s/low 140s. This man average 196 over a full decade
I have never heard Gretzky called a puck hog he has almost double the assists he had over goals!
assists count as points, so gretz didn't have 200 goals but 80-90 goals and rest of points being asists they combine goals and asists and call them "points"
I love me some Teemu. He's my second favorite player all time. I was 17 years old in Winnipeg for his rookie season. Went to a bunch of games.
Its very hard to find one to compare him with.
Lemieux or Jagr?
Igor Larionov?
Its a bad fit mostly because Gretzky was in a league of his own.
He delivered where ever he went in way no one else ever have
There is a video about his top 25 most unbreakable records
If you dont watch hockey. He is the michael jordan/tom brady of hockey.
He’s so much better than that though, those sports haven’t had a Gretzky. He’s like an NBA player with 60000 points or a QB with 120000 yards.
He is not A hockey GOAT, he is THE hockey GOAT. Only player EVER to have his number retired league wide. Watch and learn. :)
Down below is the most complete hockey player of all-time.

50 goals in 39 games says it all
The thing that’s wild about Gretzky is that if you compare his highlights to most elite players, gretzky’s will seem dull. (Relatively speaking)
He made everything he did look easy and effortless.
Not a lot in the way of dirty dangles…
That alone should tell you something when looking at his stats.
McDavid last year just two points behind that !
Not quite. A team averages maybe three GOALS a game. That does not account for assists. Each goal may or may not be more than one point for the individual players because the stats have slightly different parameters.
Also, watch the nhl playoffs, its insane how unpredictable it is.
The year when Gretzky turned 10, of course he was playing hockey with 15 year olds and scored 400 goals that season.
Try looking up the value of his rookie card.
91 I think gretz with the kings when they win was not top gretz but media wise top gretz
88-99 gretz maybe was the top of his game.
Notice how all those things said about him were actually the same as what people say about Larry Bird?
He is the most dominant player is sports history by far
Actually its Rodney Mullen but Gretsky is a close 2nd.
#99 is the only number in the NHL that is 100% retired across every team. He is the GOAT 🐐
You spelled Bobby Orr wrong
The way I cackled when you said Ted Bundy xD
If lebron played hockey, his vision or pass first mentality woulf have gotten him more praise compaired to the nba. Completely different sports and players I know, I'm talking about the mindset he has. It would have fit hockey better than basketball due to the higher number of players, lines, rarity of goals ect.
Best player ever period
There's a reason they call him The Great One

He has more assists then the next player below him has points. Not counting his over 800 goals.
Hes like MJ, if MJ averaged a 50 point Triple Double for a decade lol
Gretzky would still be the highest point scoring player in history, IF YOU DIDN'T COUNT HIS GOALS
Gretzky was so much better than everyone else he was banned from fantasy leagues
He's the greatest offensive player of all time. I think the best all round player of all time is Mario
If the goat conversation bugs you then who is on your NHL Mount Rushmore? 😁 (without goalies)
Bobby Orr the real GOAT....he revolutionized the how dman should play.....not a dude that js stayed behind the net. How revolutionary that was🙄
Delusional. Nobody changed the game more than Gretsky. Nobody came close to his records. Ppl who say Orr was the GOAT are huffing nostalgia copium. Its irrefutable that Gretsky was leagues beyond Orr both in impact on the progression of the game and performance within the game.
A average player would do 15 goals 30 assist in a season, in a good season
Gretzky was great, but Bobby Orr is the GOAT!
You need to look at prime Mario Lemieux... Because of injuries and cancer he coudn't beat Gretzky records...He is the biggest "what if" in NHL history
Gordie Howe!
