    I never expected him to be so softly spoken? If you look at his self portraits you see a man with such a commanding stare.

    " when somethings really convincing, I dont think about, how they are done" Lovely words from the legend. keep it simple.

      Very true. In some artwork, at times, critics want to make up for what is not there with words. No need because if I like something I just go for it.🤔

    i miss his brilliance and how he approached painting. He would have been 100 years old this year on 8 December. His current exhibition is at The National Gallery, in London, called New Perspectives.

    I'm sure he's right about "really convincing pictures" at 3:48 of that kind. Velazquez likewise erases any trace of technique, even though of course it's full of technique. One Velazquez that brings this to mind is the portrait of Cardinal Camillo Massimi: it resisted my attempt to think of it ever *being made* and at the same time it didn't seem photographic. This may explain the scrutiny and finesse that Freud's later work possesses: there is no benefit to close proximity because they are painted to be at their most convincing at a certain distance. In extreme close up they remain elusive, so that one might as well be scrutinizing the palette or--in his case and Bacon's--the studio wall.

    Freud was at that moment considered as a great artist, perhaps a genius and still when he talks, even if he makes sharp thoughts full of content, he is constantly looking back to the two interviewers. Perhaps even after reaching the highest popularity, he was still socially insecure.

    • @luiscuixara4622
      @luiscuixara4622 3 года назад +2

      Sometimes, he was just waiting for an intelligent reply to the observation he made, or a question he had gently proposed. Other times, he was wondering when and how to make a graceful exit. When artists are so intensely loyal to their work, they may not be socially adept or masters of small talk. The Queen's Christmas card photo is just perfect . . .

    Every documentary mentions that Lucian Freud is secretive and never wanted to be filmed. But he is in every documentary about himself being filmed which he was secretive about and did not like being filmed because he was very secretive, so did not like getting filmed, because he was very secretive, but he is in this movie, so how secretive could he be if he did not like getting filmed but is in this movie?

      He was reclusive for years, literally a nobody, from nowhere!... And suddenly the world is standing at his door, pointing what must seem to him, a million cameras in his face all at once he is the "ROCK STAR OF ART!" So by the time he is just getting used to this much attention, he is now asked for his opinion of one of the greatest works of art, done by one of the world's greatest artists!

    3:22 The interviewer is looking at Freud in utter disbelief. Suddenly the realisation what it means to be in the presence of genius...he simply cannot anticipate the thoughts of Freud.

    Who is the (white haired, balding) twit twisting and turning with his hands in his pockets, rather than looking at the picture or perhaps even listening to F? His not-understanding is spectacularly illustrated in his questions (ca. 4.30) about LF's doctor. Couldn't they (oh, it's only Channel 4, I see) have found someone brighter?

      Lucain Freud is overrated? Dear God, any amateur painters reading this cease your efforts right now because there's no way forward if Freud is overrated. I absolutely agree with you about Emin, Hirst and Hockney and maybe even Bacon, but Freud worked like a mad dog trying to develop his skills, he wasn't a showman by any stretch of the imagination, he was a true master.
