  • To do the Scapula Release Down and Forward technique correctly and avoid your horse getting it confused with a stretch, it’s essential not to bring his leg too far forward when doing the Scapula Release Down and Forward. As a rule of thumb, place his foot down at a point in line with his knee.
If you keep bringing the foot too far forward, the horse will either:
    a) pull his leg back once he realizes it’s overstretched, or
    b) lose his balance and fall forward.
It’s crucial to avoid letting the horse fall forward. When first practicing the Scapula Release Down and Forward, there’s often a tendency to extend the leg out too far. If this happens and you can’t support his weight, set his foot down immediately to prevent hyperextension.
To help yourself stay consistent, you can mark the spot on the ground where you want to set the leg down-just like Jim does in this video. Watch it to see each step of this technique in action.
