Holy, this is too good. It is like making really realistic water while having the least amount of computing. I have often tried to create water with varying results but often it used somekind of ocean modifier and then applying it. And caustics that was often just a no as it took even longer to render. Awesome tutorial!
Man I tried everything, every tutorial, every node, and finally with your method was able to get the bottom of the pool to show the texture.. wow, thank you.. how did you come up with this. genius sir
Been using blender for 1.5 years now, and I can honestly say that this tutorial is easy to follow. It amazes me how simple Blender has become over the past 2 (3?) years. Thank you for this tutorial.
Omg how deep and technical this is! However very well explained. Although I couldn't reproduce the exact process and result, I learned a ton from your tutorial. Thanks a lot!
Finally!! A water with transparency and actual bumpy surface :) I'm only 4 minutes in and you've already solved all the issues I was having. Thanks, and subbed!
Wow, I can't say enough good things about this incredible guy who's been teaching Blender for free! After 5 minutes i thought: Man you´re my hero!... Then i saw the timeline: Holy funk! He´s adding more and more and more... Then i completely lost it XD Good thing i can do it step by step thanks to your video :D God bless you man!
I work for a movie company where i get to see the people they look for, and yourself could be an actor, you have a personality on your looks that could work for a lot of things
Good tutorial, just one criticism, it's quite hard to read the nodes even at 1080. It's strange usually 1080 is fine, but not in your case. So I have to keep swapping between full screen and Blender. Otherwise it's a great tutorial, I certainly don't want to demotivate you, just something to maybe fix for next time.
Thank you for this. I did not use your node setup exactly but I ended up with the best material I have ever developed for water. I used just one mapping node and sent the vector to all of the noise nodes, which allows me to animate the water just by animating x,y and z individually in that mapping node. Adding a tiny amount of z animation adds a nice detail, because instead of the wave and caustic patterns just moving horizontally they also change shape.
thank you for the water set-up. ill be using it in a cool animation using a dynamic paint application. ill tag you in the blender group when i post it.
Thank you, great lesson! But I can't understand one thing, mix shader stops working when you connect Shadow ray to it. the material is displayed as normal glass, without caustics. Where did I go wrong?
@@HaydenGray same issue, turns black. changing absorption value doesn't work. hopefully i can make it work without the light path? thanks for the tutorial :)
Do you know how to do water like jpierce he uses C4D and octane but not blender I wanna get like the emission and ripples surrounding the shoreline or around an object in the water
hello, great tutorial. I have a question regarding the light path . when i plug the shadow ray to the Fac of the mix shader, it doesn't show caustics but when i plug the camera ray to the Fac of the mix shader, it does shows caustic. would it be something that has to do with my node setup ?. 19:49
I run my monitor at the non-native resolution for tutorials so I think it's been offsetting my cursor to the left of what I'm actually clicking. I've been trying to get that fixed
Thank you, this is a truly awesome tutorial. Any thoughts regarding creating a surfing wave that builds and peels off left or right creating the tube that we surfers cherish?
Excellent tutorial. I got a Python error when I tried to add the Texture Coordinate driver expression. Can you explain what might be causing this or point me towards a good reference for driver expressions or workflows? Thanks for sharing great work.
Any reason you chose volume absorption as opposed to Principled Volume or absorption + scatter? I found that having the scatter element added light to deep bodies of water so that when you look down, it's blue and not black.
One question, what HDRI do you use in this tutorial? I would like the way the lighting looks and I want to use this same lighting in some of my renders!
hey hayden, great tutorial, but i do have a question. at (11.11) how were you able to join the two nodes together? i wasnt able to find a way to do it, no matter what i tried.
Thanks! It's the reroute node, I have node wrangler installed so I was able to add it by holding shift and dragging across the connections while holding right-click.

5:40 if you want to get that viewer node you must install node wrangler in preference and then press ctrl shift left mouse button on voronoi texture
You're a hero, thanks!
when I do the Control shift click Its just replacing the surface on the material output :( I do have node wrangler
@@LukeHomay same. any solution to this?
@@JuxBravo same
@@LukeHomayit basically did the same as the viewer node that OP has. CTRL+Shift+Left click again on the BSDF again to go back to normal.

I really hope the day when tutorials like this will include in description a blend file with the texture will soon come...

same thing
Try changing the volume absorption value, that can massively affect the output. Also do make sure you are using Cycles if you aren't already
