    Holy, this is too good. It is like making really realistic water while having the least amount of computing. I have often tried to create water with varying results but often it used somekind of ocean modifier and then applying it. And caustics that was often just a no as it took even longer to render. Awesome tutorial!

    Been using blender for 1.5 years now, and I can honestly say that this tutorial is easy to follow. It amazes me how simple Blender has become over the past 2 (3?) years. Thank you for this tutorial.

    5:40 if you want to get that viewer node you must install node wrangler in preference and then press ctrl shift left mouse button on voronoi texture

      when I do the Control shift click Its just replacing the surface on the material output :( I do have node wrangler

      ​@@LukeHomayit basically did the same as the viewer node that OP has. CTRL+Shift+Left click again on the BSDF again to go back to normal.

    Good tutorial, just one criticism, it's quite hard to read the nodes even at 1080. It's strange usually 1080 is fine, but not in your case. So I have to keep swapping between full screen and Blender. Otherwise it's a great tutorial, I certainly don't want to demotivate you, just something to maybe fix for next time.

    Thank you for this. I did not use your node setup exactly but I ended up with the best material I have ever developed for water. I used just one mapping node and sent the vector to all of the noise nodes, which allows me to animate the water just by animating x,y and z individually in that mapping node. Adding a tiny amount of z animation adds a nice detail, because instead of the wave and caustic patterns just moving horizontally they also change shape.

    Thank you, great lesson! But I can't understand one thing, mix shader stops working when you connect Shadow ray to it. the material is displayed as normal glass, without caustics. Where did I go wrong?

      Try changing the volume absorption value, that can massively affect the output. Also do make sure you are using Cycles if you aren't already

    hello, great tutorial. I have a question regarding the light path . when i plug the shadow ray to the Fac of the mix shader, it doesn't show caustics but when i plug the camera ray to the Fac of the mix shader, it does shows caustic. would it be something that has to do with my node setup ?. 19:49

      I run my monitor at the non-native resolution for tutorials so I think it's been offsetting my cursor to the left of what I'm actually clicking. I've been trying to get that fixed

    Excellent tutorial. I got a Python error when I tried to add the Texture Coordinate driver expression. Can you explain what might be causing this or point me towards a good reference for driver expressions or workflows? Thanks for sharing great work.

    Any reason you chose volume absorption as opposed to Principled Volume or absorption + scatter? I found that having the scatter element added light to deep bodies of water so that when you look down, it's blue and not black.

    hey hayden, great tutorial, but i do have a question. at (11.11) how were you able to join the two nodes together? i wasnt able to find a way to do it, no matter what i tried.

      Thanks! It's the reroute node, I have node wrangler installed so I was able to add it by holding shift and dragging across the connections while holding right-click.
