Hollywood: "It's a show for kids!"
ATLA: *A father literally burns his child's face off.*
Hahaha. A nightmare monster rips people’s faces off. Full scale genocide happens.

Tbh, Hollywood has a point, I've seen worse in kids shows from the 60s.
Hey, guys, I met Dante Bosco last month and he asked people in his pannel
"Who asked for this?"
I just don’t get it. How is three seasons that are roughly 10 hours each too much for some people? We need to drop it to 8 hours?
@@gregowen2022We need to talk about this for the podcast
@@gregowen2022It just enough episodes and character development for everyone. Some we would have liked to see more but that is the mystery and wonder of what happens after the story.
Yeah, I'm not surprised that Dante Bosco is based. There's zero reason to rehash ATLA in an effort to make it "more adult" or like game of thrones. ATLA is a beautiful, mature, well-written story on its own. Makes me really wish they would just leave it alone.
Your Doofenshmirtz impression is spot on
I loved the bust through the wall like the Kool-Aid Man joke!😂😂
Hey I said that
That was absolutely fantastic! Doofenshmirtz is why I'm glad I had a son at 21!

DEI: Doofenshmirtz Evil Incorporated, where being evil is not debated.
Wouldn't surprise me if they try to make Azula a typical sympathetic villain who's merely misunderstood when they get around to putting her on screen. And I wouldn't be surprised if they'll try to pull a quick redemption arc with the Fire Nation Princess trying to break away from father. Because I'd doubt they'll have her descent into sheer madness like she did originally. Which will undermine Zuko's story arc, heck undermine him as a character by making him redundant.
Yep, if we can’t have sexism, then we definitely can’t have a woman being a psychotic villain. They’ll probably have Ozai manipulating her heavily and really play up how everyone told her to play dolls with the other girls and such.
Yup. And we'll miss out on the greatest Agni Kai ever.@@gregowen2022
Yep, and we get to miss out on the greatest Agni Kai ever.
Kinda waiting for them to sideline Aang and Zuko for a Katara and Azula rivalry taking more of a central stage.
As someone who hasn’t seen the show I have feeling they are going to give her redemption arc in the following season.
I swear to The Lord, it's like everytime we get a GOOD adaptation of something, we just reset and get at least 7 projects that use the property they're supposed to adapt like a skinsuit.

Who knew I could do Doof? Now it’s definitely in rotation, haha
The running gag for his character is that he has the misogyny literally beaten out of him
Man that episode when iro sings the soldier boy song hit me like a truck and solidified the show as GREAT for me
I recently decided to write an Avatar fanfic as a writing exercise. It’s very challenging because Avatar was a very good show. If I was making a story for a bad show, it’d be easy because I could just throw out the crap plot and character traits and replace them with whatever I come up with. You can strip a bad story down to its foundation and rebuild it however you want.
Creating a story for a good show is much more difficult, at least if you’re trying to do a good job. Since the plot and characters are pretty good, you don’t want to throw anything out without good reason.
A fanfic usually starts with a “what if” question. You make a change to the story somewhere, big or small, and describe how that change shifts the story going forward. There are many examples of bad fanfics (shocker, I know) where a change is made, but the story stays on the rails of canon regardless. Why make a change if it doesn’t have any effect? They might as well not have bothered.
So any good story should have changes that affect and change the story, so I will have to write new events and scenes that didn’t happen in the show to support those changes, which means I need to understand these characters deeply so whatever actions and words those characters use doesn’t appear out of place or contrary to their nature. I have to go through that effort to create scenes that don’t feel out of place next to the original story.
I could take the easy option of just carelessly gouging the story and replacing it with cliches like the writers for the Netflix adaptation clearly have, but then I’d be knowingly creating garbage which isn’t my goal.
Seems to be their goal though.
Glad you like Avatar, this series is a banger. And I appreciate the Bad Boys 2 reference :D
It was a major red flag from the onset, when news of the original creators of avatar leaving the show early on. They stated that there were too many things that they disagreed with and when they realized that they were not being heard they decided to leave.
I'm convinced now that the original series was a lucky occurrence. It was just the perfect mix of ideas, medium, support, staff and time period...
Big studios with millions more can't replicate it, nor do they understand why it was so popular in the first place... Not even the creators understand it, as it's apparent.
But hey! They "adapted" Resident Evil, Cowboy Bebop, the Witcher and Death Note already! It'll be JUST FIIINE amirite??
netflix tried to thronesify my favorite book: the letter for the king and from the trailers i knew i didn't want to see it.
You know what game of thrones fans actually like? Good writing and a good adaptation.
Shame even the showrunners of GoT didn't realize this.
It is a kids' show, though. It was made for Nickelodeon and targeted toward younger audiences.
The takeaway instead should be that kid's shows don't have to be dumb and can be well written. It doesn't have to be schlock, but can be insightful, and thought provoking, without being overly serious drama. Avatar has a lot of fun, jokes, and levity to balance out it's pretty dark war setting. And that's what makes it work and what the Netflix team doesn't seem to get.
You got me with that Iroh clip, whew. But, yes you were spot on, this show did so much so well in
displaying so many lessons. I keep asking this question, because I never understand. Why do they keep giving people
shows to run that don't understand what made them great in the first place? How many times do they need to fail to get it?
Well Sokka did have some trauma from his Father leaving and his mother dying, it’s just that he deals with it and shows it differently then Katara does. Men and women deal with things differently. He probably wasn’t as close to their mom as Katara was, so when Katara was forced to step up and fill that role it was easier for him to move on. Katara also had other female figures in the village to help her know what it means to be a woman. Sokka was closer to his father than Katara was, so he’s gonna take that departure harder than his sister. And with all the men leaving Sokka had nobody to guide him in what it means to be a real man or anyone to confide in, creating a feeling of loneliness which would be traumatic in its own ways. So he attached himself to the wrong idea and overcompensated, an ego can be just as much of a shield as being over motherly. There was also the lingering threat in the back of his mind that the Fire Nation could attack at any time and he was essentially the only one who could fight back in any meaningful way, so he was also trying to hype himself up for the worst case scenario. When Zuko arrived he was reliving his own worst nightmare when he wasn’t strong enough to defend his family.
Yes Kataras trauma was a major part of her arc and shouldn’t be reworked, but Sokka did have his own as well just different. All these kids have trauma and deal with it their own ways.
OK, so in this grown up show for grown ups, they removed the “sexism” because they thought said grown ups couldn’t handle it… While the kids watching the “kids show” clearly could…
Listen, I get that being a Leftοid means you’re biologically prone to complete stυpidity, but nobody thought to double check what they said in the same freaking context?

The first season of Avatar The Last Airbender was silly because it was a series of journey full of fun adventures before we got to the North Pole, where the series started to get darker and more serious. By skippin' over the fun parts of the original and makin' their show darker, Netflix is givin' us an edgy fanfic minus any substance and shock value without the weight needed to be shocking. I wouldn't be surprised if they killed off beloved characters just because Game Of Thrones did it.

Creators jump ship? In the DEI Hollywood era? Skipping this hard.

Character development is Hollywood writers kryptonite in the last 5 years. Especially when it comes to TV series. If your characters aren't perfect from episode 1 then they don't want it
It’s like they don’t understand that growth from flaws is what makes the audience like a character. So shocking. Yes, they have no faith in the audience to stick around so they throw perfect characters, and tons of action and sex at them right away. Ironically, it’s boring.
Where do they keep getting these bad writers? They'd have better luck hiring nobodies who actually understand how to write.
@@zionleach3001 they usually hire freelancers or in current times "peoples stories who NEED to be heard" and writers get like below minimum wage

So because they believe you can never be redeemed or change from those beliefs they just got rid of that trait from sokka entirely so they don’t have to deal with it

The play that the Avatar Gang watched in the Ember Island Players episode is probably gonna be more accurate to the actual show.
I mean did you see what the Ember Island performers did to Toph? Amazing.
So far the Ember Island play is the best adaptation of the last airbender.
The writers were ahead of their time! Easily predicted the future terrible adaptations that will be made of their story in the future going forward! (Didn't even need to predict! They were doing this shit long before ATLA mocked them).
Will say I'll miss the Performer playing Zuko continuing to get more hair till he went full Goku Super Saiyan at one point LOL
The original arc had alot of growth for that character. It's not like he was like Andrew Dice Clay in the beginning either lol
Right?! He said “men have mens work and women have womens work” which is pretty immature, but it’s not like he was treating Katara or Suki like second class citizens. I don’t recall him ordering women around with finger snaps and calling them Sweet Cheeks or something
@@gregowen2022 He was used to a very traditional, prescribed lifestyle in a remote village, but he goes out into the world and eventually learns there are other ways to be. I think it's fine for a character to have some negative traits, people do change, sometimes
@gregowen2022 That's why the whole, "Soka is sexist" arch never flew for me. Saying that men are better hunters is not sexist. Saying that men are better fighters is not sexist. These are modern day f'nist tropes that we have all accepted and have been beat over the head with. Did Soka get humbled and grow? Yes. And that is a good thing. While there are some movies and TV shows that are entirely for kids, (cough Trolls cough,), so many of these "kids" movies and TV shows are deeper than most of the adult media I consume. I think that's because kids and family movies aren't afraid to hold back with life lessons. “Animation is a medium, not a genre” is so succinct and perfect!
@@gregowen2022 I agree. I've been quoting it a lot recently after I heard it.

@gregowen2022 animation is for kids.
Thats why my kids only watch hentai.
@@gregowen2022 And the most stupid thing is that with all the complaints from the West to the Japanese media, for years now they have been classifying their animations by demographics, the kodomo for children from 4 to 8-9 years old, shonen that range from pre to teenagers and the seinen that is for +18 material.
Brother, even your toku heroes have that format with super sentai, having a range of stories from esque-kodomo to shonen with some having their mature and dark themes. If you want something more esque-shonen, there are the kamen rider or ultraman, you want something more mature, there are the Garo series, even the riders themselves have a reboot with a more mature and adult tone.

Had some hope after One Piece. Then I realized that unlike Oda, the creators of this show wouldn’t be breathing down the necks of the ones running this on Netflix.
@alexman378 you are joking right? I thought the Netflix One Piece was absolutel trash, but then again I lost interest in that series years ago as I respect Oda as much as I Respect George RR Martin, which is not at all. Both are writers who got a following due to great storytelling early on, both have let that "story" continue for way too long with no ending in sight in our lifetimes. Oda says he doesn't even have the ending yet but still has more than 10 years of material to make at the moment, after One piece has been on air for nearly 20 years as an anime, with way more as a manga, it's becomes tedious and imbecilic to dedicate that kind of time to a story you won't ever finish. As a writer, you need to have an ending planned for every story you tell before you even tell it to others, otherwise you aren't a storyteller or even a writer. You're a conman.
I had cope. No idea why looking back, but i had hopium it would be good
Someone's comment made me realize. Everything about the spirit realm and the show's like meta physical world is going to be totally fucked.
It’s going to be a CGI nightmare realm
Or they are going to leave it out entirely because it needs to be "realistic" plus modern writers tend to hate religious themes these days, either way I can't tell whether removing it or keeping it is going to be worse.
What's the betting odds of them trying to retrocanonize that Rava and Vatu crap into ATLA and completely ignore what ATLA had to say about its own worldbuilding?
@@gregowen2022can't wait to see the Nightmare Fuel that is Koh
@draketheduelist I despise the Rava and Vatu nonsense in LOK. It's so despicably elementary.
Come to think of it, I despise LOK in general, minus a few good parts in season 1. But on the whole, LOK just takes a wrecking ball to all the lovely, intricate, deep, and thoughtful worldbuilding that had been accomplished in ATLA.
One example: Aang, an airbender, struggled with earthbending, since earth is the natural opposite to air. Roku, a firebender, struggled with waterbending, since water is the natural opposite to fire.
The element that is opposite the Avatar's natural element will be his or her most difficult one to master. That is what was established in ATLA.
Then along comes LOK to f**k it up for no reason whatsoever. Korra, a waterbender who struggles with airbending? And now, because of this _one_ example-as opposed to the _two_ previously established-we're now supposed to take away that it's always been about the Avatar's _personality?_ F**k off, LOK!

I shall continue with book 3: showing torture, deaths onscreen, some rather Sus moments from the beach episode, showing generational trauma, even more child abuse, bloodstained wounds of lightning bad enough to cause a scar and technical seizures, the "I don't need protection" "believe me, she doesn't" moment, and that's only half of the things in that chapter alone. Yep, I think the shortened time and the showrunner attitude are going to make everyone’s arc essentially the same, and it will be super boring
Great point about Katara's arc. It was about not giving into revenge just because it feels good in the moment and being the bigger person and letting go.
Whereas nowadays her arc could be about how she had all the power and abilities all along and never actually had to grow or change or struggle, just Believe in Herself Enough and her problems would be solved.
Every time this happens, the story gets exponentially worse. Getting a committee of bad writers and people who don’t write and people who don’t people does not produce a satisfying human story.
"people who don't people" That's a good one--not sure if it's a typo but it reminds me of the old cultural meme about "failing at adulting."
Well it's all the more relevant now that people are in a terminally online, prolonged adolescent state. It's not just the field of candidates for any job anymore, it's the hiring committees and HR teams that are full of these "people." Completely senseless and out of touch. Couldn't pass a psych eval to save their lives.
I think you're right on target with what they're going to do with Katara and Pakku. They'll also take away Iroh's pervy antics, which was used to hide his original intentions from the audience. Heck, they'll probably gender swap Iroh to be the amazing aunt who has no flaws. I lost faith in this show as soon as the writers of the original series walked out on this project years ago.

Well Netflix has been financing great shows like Arcane and Blue Eye Samurai so I think the problem is lower down the chain of command than Netflix itself.
The best part of the Pakku storyline is that he not only agrees to teach Katara, he decides she’s capable of teaching Aang waterbending. He went from not wanting to teach Katara at all to entrusting her with probably the most important job any waterbender can have in just a few days.
Sokka's sexism was not just the part of his character growth but ALSO the reason why Katara is so strong and independent woman (non ironically).
They are going to give Azula some sort of redemption arc ala Masters of the Universe with Evil Lyn. Also don't be surprised if the Avatar takes a back seat ala Wheel of Time because what Netflix really wants to do is make a Katara show but know they can't do that until they tackle the original first.

I was not going to watch the live-action trash anyway.
Hang around here, I’ll watch it for you and report back
Hollywood is also always afraid to show scars. Both Live Action Zuko's need to wash their face, they got pink eye or a rash forming.
Zuko's scar is like the equivalent to the cliche Hollywood sexy cry.
Yeah, this one looks better than Shamaylan Zuko’s pillow wrinkles, but they need to step it up more. It’s a pretty big deal, they need to get it right
Avatar was deeper than most kids understood which is why parents could enjoy it with their children. It is what good writing is supposed to look like. Complex situations that are shown so both kids and adults can relate to them. Changing the show to be more like Game of Thrones doesn't make it better, it just makes it so your kids can't watch. Good job Netflix.
Watch katara beat paku in first try. I was so excited for avatar after OPLA but this is looking like train wreck.
Oh yeah, she’s going to shame Pakku massively. Ugh
People can't be flawed characters and develop for the better anymore, they need to be perfect from episode 1.
Seriously, age of the Mary/Gary Sue ,it's so boring...
I'm loving the slow death of everything I ever cherished. It's like giving my paralysis demon free reign over psych. yay
2:45 same greg. this stereotype is the worst
I’m so sick of it. Did anyone even watch Arcane? Was that FoR kIdS?
@@gregowen2022 or how about the entire genre of adult animation? simpsons, south park, rick and morty, futurama, they're all obviously not made for kids, and all are enjoyed by adults. but the creators are probably the type to never give any of those shows a chance.
What I love about the fight between Pakku and Katara is how she goes into it knowing that she’s going to loose because it shows that even if she’s not a strong fighter she has a very strong will and determination but that’s too subtle for Netflix to comprehend…
I’d like to recommend everyone who thinks animation means something is just for kids, to watch Blue Eye Samurai
And they cocked it up
Snatching defeat from the jaws of victory, amazing
I'm looking forward to hearing Greg Owen talk about A:TLA in depth.
Zuko has best arc no debate 😂
And the other characters change and grow with him. It's all so awesome!
Oh yeah. Zuko isn't even my favourite character - Azula is - but objectively, Zuko had the most well written arc.
So I’ve heard. I really need to get around to watching this show.
@blueflare3848 it's worth the watch brother
@@mmakreesekingjr2074 It seems like the type of show I would like, to be honest. I enjoy shows with solid writing, an interesting story, compelling characters, and one that isn’t afraid to take itself seriously when necessary. From what I’ve heard, ATLA achieves all of this.
I might be in the minority, but I’m still super hyped for this show. It’s not just the plot, the world building and bending styles are a huge part of avatar for me
I don't think I need to go into the "animation = for kids" argument, we can all see how dumb and closeminded this thought process is, so I'll just cover the other two main issues.
First of all, if you wanna attract Game Of Thrones Fans, make a show similar to or just add GOT to your service. But you can't do that because rights, so just slap a GOT skin on Avatar, because people like those, so let's use Polymerization and fus them together. My best friend is a huge GOT fan, but he's also an Avatar fan, he doesn't enjoy them because they're the same show, he enjoys Avatar, because it's Avatar. And he likes GOT for the same reason.
As for Sokka's character development, the point of him being sexist is to show a misunderstanding of what he thinks being a man is as opposed to what it should be. Not to mention, Sokka LEARNS NOT TO BE SEXIST.
Netflix isn't trying to appeal to Avatar fans, they're trying to appeal to consumers. "Oh you guys like GOT, well we're reworking this shitty kids show into a GOT like series" it's ridiculous.
Plus Netflix has also adapted anime or done the English dubs for them that have become loved by so many people. Seven Deadly Sins, Vinland Saga, Aldnoah.Zero, B the Beginning just to name a few. Ah anime has literally become popular, because there's something for EVERYONE, regardless of age, ethnicity, gender, sexuality, religion or political persuasion.
And Western cartoons that are loved by all those same people like Avatar, Ben 10, the DC Animated Universe, Generator Rex, Danny Phantom, Teen Titans, Spectacular Spiderman and young Justice have all been marketed to kids, but still have mature themes, because they're GOOD shows that happen to be animated.
As I said on another video... remember the episode "Bitter Work"? When Aang is overly excited and asks Toph which awesome move she's going to teach him first, Toph responds, "How about we start with 'move a rock'?"
Similarly, when the Netflix showrunners say they want this "remix" series to "appeal to _Game of Thrones_ fans," my immediate response is, "How about you start with 'appeal to _Avatar: The Last Airbender_ fans'?"
Obviously all animated media is for kids, I show my 3 year old nephew the series "Invincible" all the time. He loves it! Perfect for kids!
Netflix ATLA showrunners- The cartoon on Nickelodeon is simply not mature enough for our target audience.
Also Netflix ATLA showrunners - a character learning to overcome his own sexism and biased notions of gender is just too mature of a concept for our target audience.
O_o
Kim has also stated theyre removing the war in Ba Sing Say because it's quote "Gaslighty"
Apparently, that was just somebody trolling.
Amazon could have had a game of thrones clone, but Jennifer sulky and her infinite female wisdom, fired the two guys who were working on a Conan series for them and created the wheel of time disaster. Those two guys then went back to HBO and created the hit series House of the dragon. Go woke, go broke.
What season of Game of Thrones are we talking about? If it's the good seasons, this is a bad idea. If it's season 8, this is an AWFUL idea! 😱
too soon to say its dead...beside the problem with sokka that is on the news there is nothing more than that that said yo me that the series is bad...give it a chance...cant be that bad...im sure people also think of that when the one piece series went out and look what it become...im sure i have no trust in netflix...but to have that cast of people very similar to the series, the bending, the world itself as close as the series....come on...be pacient....if episode 2+ is still bad...you all prove your point and the series is doom...before that...just wait
I guarantee you they’ll take Kora’s traits and stick them into Kitara.
One Piece was only good because Oda was breathing down their necks.
I have complicated feelings about Avatar in general. I enjoyed blitzing through it in college about 15 years ago. The characters were good (for some reason I never liked Toph, but I know I'm the outlier there), there are a lot of iconic moments, and it's better than it has any right to be coming from Nickelodeon of all channels. Not one of my all time favorites, but a very strong show.
I almost got into Korra, but the last few episodes of the first season killed all momentum and interest I had in it. (Also I feel like Korra and Rey came out of the same aesthetic, which is interesting, but not interesting). Knowing that that's where the cast ended up is slightly disappointing, but I think I have an easy enough time waving away Korra from my mental canon that it doesn't impact my view of the original.
Then a decade of being online and realizing that a lot of wannabe writing advice on RUclips and elsewhere ONLY CITE AVATAR and treat it like it's some absolutely perfect example of what fiction should be. It's a good show, but it isn't the only example. It's like Harry Potter fans where you want to shake them and say "Read another book!" I want to tell these Avatar fans "Watch other shows!"
This shouldn't objectively tarnish my memories of the show, but I'd be lying if I said it didn't. I should probably give it another watch sometime.
That being said, while this adaptation doesn't hurt me as much as others, I definitely sympathize. I know this is to a lot of people what Marvel or Star Wars was to me.
Yeah, this decade has been one crushed franchise after the next. The Korra/Rey comparison is apt from what my daughter tells me of Korra. It’s so sad that there was so much great writing and these past few years Hollywood is just lazily cannibalizing all of it
One Piece is just built diff
Thats because oda make sure they not destroy one piece. If oda not there then they gonna destroy one piece, just like they do to Cowboy Bepop
if they make it like game of thrones i will absolutely hate it
My bf is rewatching the series...we just hit tales of ba sing se...i had to leave the room when iroh's story came on because i know im too weak.
It will be the Katara show. Modern audiences love it when their expectations are subverted, and a strong female character is the actual hero of the story, rather than the titular character. Witness the amazing success of He-man and Scott Pilgrim.
I can't wait for the inevitable Korra spin-off show, where we learn from Tenzin that avatar Aang became a broken washed-up man after his divorce.
Haha, yes, the amazing and super original subversion of the male protagonist is doing so well. I’m also excited to see Aang be super serious the entire time and have no childish innocence and wonder.
My 5 kids and I rewatch ATLA every summer - 7 years & rewatches later I'm so blown away by the incredible story telling. The characters are like a part of our family and they feel so real. Each rewatch I pick up something new. So glad you've watched this show - rewatch it after a while and see how it gets better. So excited to hear your take on ZuTara Vs Kataang. 😂
I thought m night shamylan killed the idea of a live action avatar and the world learned not to do so.
The story arcs were epic but also the animation, the expressions of the characters. No actress can make azula seem as powerful and terrifying.
(Also it was either Azula or Shego being your first domme girl crush)
Grey Delisle, whatever else about her, she was SO incredible in her role as Azula. That acting was insane. Everyone did well in that show, but her's and Dante Basco's were top-tier
"for kids"
lol.. lmao even..
clear skill issue we having here.. it's like "adults" saying "it's for kids" then proceeds to act like one..
why are we still letting these people cook? hell, don't let them touch any cooking utensils in the first place..
The problem is they’ve been serving fast food content for so long, they wouldn’t know good cooking if it bit them
So... rewatch the previous "Avatar: The Last Airbender" or... wait for Netflix... get a Netflix sub... and.... regret that choice. Hmmm.
I'll wait for the show to progress and watch as my RUclips sidebar FILLS with "I can't STAND this awful show!" vids first.
Then I'll decide.
I have a feeling the reaction from us video makers is going to be savage. Feels like they really missed the mark on this show
@@gregowen2022 Tho this need not be said: thank you. May you never be d*m*n*t*z*d due to the overlords losing their sh*t.
