      same here, except I don't remember the commercials looking so old lol.... also unlike today, I think in the 70s they ran the same ones for at least a few years, and sometimes they changed things a little but still kept the same jingle. Like the Frito song (never could do that one today, it would be called racist lol) And the Hawian punch and tootsie pop ads, changed a little, the cartoon got better over the years.

      I often say that to myself. The ironic thing: Life was pretty darn tough back then! But the good outweighed the bad, most of the time. And the world had what it no longer seems to have: Hope. You thought things would get better. I wonder if they still could, nowadays.

    • @Sarah-lb8cs
      @Sarah-lb8cs Год назад +23

      @@taracollins5597 I wonder the same thing. I often wonder if this is even fixable. Sure…turn the US red but what about society? The problem with that is there will still be criminals in our government. Maybe not as many but money corrupts a lot of things. Humanity has some serious heart and soul issues and how do you fix that? The thing I miss the most about days past is that people interacted more. We talked, we spent time together face to face. If you ask me technology/social media has been the death of that which has negatively sent ripples out into society.

I was 12 that year, I also cried when our Principal Duncan awarded me with a certificate, a cup with the ECOLOGY logo and a $5 coupon McDonald's. This was back when Madison Avenue was given at least 60 seconds to make their mark on America, and boy did they. I couldn't tell you one ad from nowadays that even comes close to these wonderful productions to sell a product, or that I can remember. This was truly a wonderful selection of ads that captured a poignant time in America for me.

      Yes, and women could be women and it was okay. It was okay for a woman to want to be attractive to men and to get married and be a wife, a mother, and a homemaker as opposed to today where your politics define beauty in a beauty contest as opposed to your looks. If a man admires a woman today he is objectifying her as opposed to just being attracted to her and she dresses and makes herself up so she is attractive to men. That used to be okay. Much simpler times back then for sure.

      Except, we see in them the rise of our modern complications - case in point, hiring an Italian to pretend to be an American Indian, in commercials that blamed the rise in litter on the public, instead of the lack of recycling options for the "new packaging", which was rapidly replacing glass and steel containers, for which there already existed, at the time, functional programs. Since then.. we still have no real, consistent, programs for these things, and the amount of litter, and stuff ending up in landfills, just keeps going up, while recycling programs are continually poor, ineffective, and rely on third parties (instead of, as before, the original manufacturers, who would have washed, and reused their glass bottles, and the like).
      So many thing wrong with, and complicated, in the current world, all stemming from, "It would be cheaper for us, the manufacturer/state/etc. to lay blame on the consumer/public, and just not spend the time or effort to offer a solution to the problems caused, along side with the 'progress' we are making." Then again, it all comes down to what you define as "progress", doesn't it? Because, that word means very different things to a hippy, generalist liberal, a 'progressive', a Democrat, a libertarian, a centrist, a conservative, an evangelical, or a Republican. All of them, and others, which overlaps, on some issues, but so, so, different in what they deem to be solutions to problems. (The political parties being listed because.. ultimately, even when they include people from one or more of the categories, they are often far more concerned about the "politics" of a solution than its effectiveness, plausibility, or costs. I.e., even if its costs more than expected, doesn't work, ignores the people its supposed to help, and is completely ineffective, at least its politically feasible... Sort of like.. blaming the public for the increase of non-recyclable trash, instead of demanding the producers of said products to produce a recycling solution.).

    • @davidfifer4729
      @davidfifer4729 7 лет назад +13

      With all respect, the purpose of the ad was to encourage people to put trash where it belongs, be that a garbage can or a recycling bin. The trash along the highways and in rivers didn't end up there because there wasn't an appropriate bin of some sort to put it into. As a child in the 60s I supplemented my income by picking up lots of recyclable glass bottles from the side of the road and turning them in to collect the deposit.

    • @patrickelliott2169
      @patrickelliott2169 7 лет назад +2

      Wish respect, the evidence says otherwise. It was promoted *by* companies *as* they ended their internal recycling programs and ramped up production of "disposable packaging". Its a bit hard to claim that it wasn't intended to, at minimum, redirect blame, when the people producing it where "specifically" the same ones that where creating the products that produced the most non-recyclable trash.
      This is in fact straight from wiki: "The Keep America Beautiful narrow focus on litter, and indeed construction of the modern concept of litter, is seen as an attempt to divert responsibility from industries that manufacture and sell disposable products to the consumer that improperly disposes of the related non-returnable wrappers, filters, and beverage containers."
      In other words, the organization itself was specifically founded to "distract" the public. That *some* recycling programs still existed at the time doesn't change the fact that "most" of the stuff being newly produced was throw away, non-recyclable, and the campaign left people thinking it was "their" responsibility to clean up the resulting mess, not the manufacturers, for failing to create a program to recycle the new products. This is sometimes termed "greenwashing".

      Not sure I agree. Yes we are a lot older and unhealthier, but the computers, internet and cell phones has made life so much more convenient. The fact that any information or products can be obtained 24 hours 7 days a week is simply amazing.

      @@davidr4523 Murder, drugs, not being able to trust our leaders... I think that's what people mean by 'the good ole days.' The morality back then was so much different. Everyone seemed happy & tolerant of each other. We celebrated & made fun of our differences instead of using them as tools against each other. No one smiles in commercials or on tv now. People have made being happy something to be looked down on or ridiculed

    I was born in '72, but I'm still old enough to remember about 75% of these commercials. So many memorable jingles! The one with the Indian made me tear up as a child.
    In regards to the Oscar Mayer weiner ad, I remember the neighborhood kids singing at the end, " 'cuz Jimmy Carter has a way of screwing up the USA." LOL

      🎶My President has a first name, it's J-I-M-M-Y. My president has a second name, it's C-A-R-T-E-R....
      There were too many letters in the second name, and it didn't really fit, so you had to double-time on "T-E"
