That is just ridiculously amazing. The locked in groove just makes it impossible to watch this without nodding or tapping my foot. So many drummers are superb technically, but lack taste in the sense that it's all complex fills without locking down a groove to tie everything together. Ultimately it's this central rhythm that makes music. Great job Steve.
Steve is one of the driving forces on drums for so many artists these days and before hand and he has come to be known as one of the best drummers alive.
I have a hard time watching even the greatest drummers in the world do a solo, but never Steve Gadd, he's just so musical in his approach. You could get your guitar and write music over what he does, like a free inspiration human drum machine. Also you never get the sense that his ego is intrenched in anything he's doing, like this is what he'd do on a solo in his garage on a Sunday or in front of thousands.
i could listen to this all day - which is why the likes of gadd and purdie are sooooo good - drum fills / solos that make you want to listen and tap along and get you going inside
This guy's my favorite. I like a lot of drummers, but this guy always seems to be my favorite pick. When you watch this, you understand how he did Aja in one take.
I feel like every hit is just so right... idk how to express it, it's just that I really wouldn't have anybody play it any other way. Every hit feels like it comes at the right time, with the right force, and just so satisfying. I'm not into drums. I dunno a thing about playing drums. My dad is a photographer and he knows a lot about the world of art in general (especially music) and I wanna be an animation director so I feel like it's my homework to hold a large amount of knowledge much like him. He's the one who told me about Gadd.
Your assessment is so close to my own... What I see when I watch him is that every single hit is so deliberate; exactly how he wants it to be, as if he evaluated each and every hit for timing, accent, groove, etc... But what makes him so extraordinary, is that while every hit seems analyzed because it's so perfect, it just flows out of him naturally... That's how I always felt watching Stevie Ray play guitar; it's like the instrument is merely the vehicle they use so that we can hear their souls speak... it's entertaining to watch/hear musicians that are technically gifted, but to witness a musician's soul speaking directly through their instrument is something so much more worthwhile & satisfying...
I’ve read that he played on Aja by Steely Dan, and didn’t remember it. How do you play on a landmark, career making album, and not remember it? Whatever he was smoking must’ve been some good shit!
@@rjanvatneberg6861 One of the best, not the best ever, too many great drummers, there's no best, impossible to compare eras and styles, and music is not a competiton anyway
This is a continuation of an idea he expressed during the Buddy Rich Memorial Concert during his first section of the Weckyl, Colaiuta, Gadd trio. It is neat to see how over a lifetime that a musician can get so much out of what amounts to a bar or two of patterns.
My favorite drummers to watch playing , not necessarily with the bands they are known for playing with but by themselves are #1 Steve Gadd #2 Simon Phillips #3 Peter Erskine .........all of them f*cking masters and make me want to quit cause i dont think ill ever get there !!!!...lol.........Erik
I always come back to Steve Gadd for a breath of fresh air. There is some weird drumming going on elsewhere these days. Too much focus on speed, robotic chops, quantizing and weirdness these days.
Gadd is like Ringo to me. You can play the beat note for note but it will never sound the same. There is just something about where they lay the beat and how they hit the drum.
Maybe not the first time he did this beggining, but it is the same as in the legendary Gadd, Weckl, Colaiuta video (Buddy Rich memorial). Totally insane!
WOW. his timing and feel and groove, what can I say, the drummers who play nine million beats to the bar with there double bass drums can't wipe Steve Gadd's ass, 90% of those drummers if you asked them to slow there licks down and just play in a groove like Steve they could never do it, same with allot of guitarist nowadays with there zillion scales per minute, but they can't wipe Jimmy Pages ass for feel and expression, and the leads that are memorable.
why is wiping someone's ass a standard for how good you are hahahh, like 'yo you're so bad at drums you don't even have the coordination to wipe my ass let alone your own' Totally agree with you by the way, true groove is why we're all here
Oh shush. so many people say what you say and it's annoying too haha. I was that guy you talk about once. I started backwards too trying to shred my way to the top. And eventually I found my way to the likes of Steve Gadd Group, Jeff Beck, Wes Montgomery, all kinds of music. Most importantly i learned to appreciate music more and learned that not everything is fast paced. To me it don't matter how you become a musician because in the end if you're a true musician at heart you will find your way to such legends as Gadd and learn the real shit. I play guitar and I know many of his songs now. go figure and I wanted to be the fastest haha. I started by trying to be a guitar shredder and now I'm here playing slow to this. haha. Anyways good day don't hate man. one of those guys that started as a shredder might be the next big thang.
Steve does some awesome left handed ghost notes on the snare not really a roll like Buddy did but just double ghost notes. Very fluid and tasty with so much finesse.
If you can't play like this, then git Gadd. Kidding, I don't know a thing about drums, just wanted to make a shitty pun because I love this man's drumming.
Steve sounds like John Bonham here but with more funk. Steve is older and slower than he used to be but he is still better than 90% of the drummers out there.
Some drummers make love to the drums but Steve definitely has mastered the art subtle art of seduction and foreplay on them. Refreshing to see someone not beat the shit out of the drums but still make them his little bitch.
I've seen them all, And then there's Steve Gadd. His drumming is my absolute favorite.
Every time, I watch him, feel like I have to start all over again at what I am trying to accomplish. Such a great drummer.
Why would you want to compare yourself with him?
@@gijsvandersluijs790 Not comparing,, Learning. It's just a series of left and right
The precision of everything is unbelievable...
timing, hitting the cymbals/drums excactly the way they create the right sound, keeping the groove...
The master of all grooves.
You think he loses the beat but then he always ends up on 1.
It's hard to be this funky.
He makes it look so easy.
I saw him with James Taylor in 2022, Knoxville TN. Incredible drummer
Thousands of great players today.. then there's Steve Gadd..

Yes, two of the best.
I saw him when I was sixteen, in Italy, playing with Al Jarreau. Outstanding
OMG you lucky son of a bugger. I'm envious. I would love to go to Italy!! Oh yah...an see Steve Gadd play with Al Jarreau would be cool too. LOL JK
Iconic genius in feel groove and timing Steve Gadd. Marvelous!

Timing is exquisite. What a musician.
👍🙂That's one "Crazy Army"!!😂 Gadd is a legend & a master!!👍🙂‼️
That's perfect "Crazy Army".
It's like a work of art.
Wonderful technique.
Mesmerising subtlety and flash.
Steve is an expert at the rests in-between the strikes.
Ah yes. The space in between the notes. Gadd is so so groovy. All aspiring drummers please…
Learn from steve gadd. Locked in less = way more. 😅. 🌟🙏💚🎵
This man is up there with the best drummers of today
Why can’t I “like” this more than once?
the master of groove...
Play Sissy Strut by the Meters over this in your head. Wow. Glad I got to record with Steve
I love the smile and the thank you at the end. It shows he truly loved playing by himself or in front of a crowd.
Такого больше нет , не знаю будет ли ? Заставить петь барабаны , только Стиву удается🔥✌️
what imaginative playing. he certainly has his own voice.
Steve is so on point that he doesn't need to do anything extra, the guy is one of if not the most accurate drummer of all time.
that back beat never disappoints
ABSOLUTELY FANTASTIC!!!!

I looked up the word "groove" in the dictionary today, and as I suspected, Steve's face and name came up in the true definition..😂
