"We were in the recording studio all day on Monday..." for a CAST ALBUM?! 🙌 It's worthy of getting it down on digital. What a cast, what a production. Saw it twice earlier this month, looking forward to seeing it again. Let's hope it extends into awards season for a better chance at noms and wins with such a deep field this season in all the categories. Stellar performances by these three, along with Krystal Joy Brown.

For those of you who aren't familiar with Merrily (which is probably most of you) - this revival is major. This show was Sondheim's 2nd flop, but the first flop after his massive successes of the 1970s, like Company, Follies, A Little Night Music, and Sweeney Todd. Sondheim said in many interviews that he felt that Broadway was essentially chomping at the bit for him to finally fail, and the trauma he endured after this show was so thoroughly panned by the critics almost made him retire - and keep in mind that if he HAD retired we wouldn't have Into the Woods, Sunday in the Park with George, Assassins, or Passion. Merrily could very easily have been Steve's last work because of how unfairly and viciously it was hated and berated, so for it to come back to Broadway 42 years later as a MASSIVE hit is vindication for Steve on a simply incredible level. He may not be here to see it...but it's his time. Breathe it in. Worlds to change and worlds to win...

Did you ever see Lonny Price’s documentary about the original Broadway run? It was so good but it’s also hard to watch due to all of the disappointment the cast and Sondheim obviously felt.

They're selling out every night and will continue to until the end of the limited run. It's already a huge hit and I think it's going to take home a lot of Tonys. (Although I always say that around this time of year and then a bunch of new revivals open in the spring...Like "Cabaret" with Eddie Redmayne which was just announced today. I really want Jonathan Groff to win his first Tony for this role, but Eddie is one of the best actors alive.) Go see it if you can! I'd say that it's up there as one of the best shows I've ever seen. (And I go to Broadway shows twice a month). Also...I met Daniel and he's literally one of the sweetest people ever, so if you feel like hanging at the stage door, he signs for everyone.
This show with this trio is just.... marvelous. Go see it if you get the chance because it is a once-in-a-lifetime kind of production. Their chemistry (the whole company's, to be honest) is incredible.
I think, usually, when guests come on the show, it's because their people reached out to Stephen's people. But given Stephen's deep love of all things Sondheim, I feel like in this case it was the other way around.
@@brn2857I am pretty sure it depends on who. When he has people like Obama or prince Harry it is likely Stephen’s team paying. However in less extreme cases I am sure you are right that it is paid spots. However this is all speculation so I could be wrong.
Something I love about this particular interview is that you can see Stephen pushing the time because he just loves talking to theatre actors about their time in the theatre. I hope he does a play sometime soon!

A note on Sorry Grateful, the song Steven mentions singing. I'm no great singer, but for what it's worth, as someone with 15 years experience in choirs, a cappella groups, and solo singing... Sorry Grateful is one of the hardest songs I've ever sung. You wouldn't think it listening to it, but when you sing it the notes are deceptively tricky, and keeping that on point while also controlling dynamics and emotion is really challenging. Singing that in front of Sondheim must have been terrifying!
You forgot to mention bungy jumping in New Zealand, Stephen. I lived in Wellington at the time you were there filming for The Late Show, and was sorry not to catch a glimpse of you.
I would LOVE to see the writers compile Mr. Trump's resume' for jail using all of his "best-loved" facial expressions. My favorite is where his mouth is all puckered up like he's about to suck-start a Harley. (No disrespect to Harley owners.)
People would buy tickets to see Daniel change his baby's diaper, just to boast to their friends they saw 'Harry Potter' live. Not to say this show isn't great and his co-stars may be 10 times better than he is, but it's Daniel's name that sells the tickets. Half of the audience may never have heard of Sondheim.
Right! That's why one of the newspapers reviewed it as "DANIEL RADCLIFFE'S MERRILY...". Daniel himself even commented "it's not my show" when Steven read that headline. You may well be an exception, but in general I don't hold Americans in high regard when it comes to culture. They go to the Metropolitan Opera to be a part of the jetset, and to the UFC in Madison Square Garden the next day for their entertainment. @@traciberry5141

I saw it for both reasons. I love Daniel Radcliffe as I am a huge HP fan. However I’m also a huge Stephen Sondheim fan. He was amazing in the show.
