I'm currently repairing and renovating the cast iron gutters on my old cottage. Today's repair is to a badly rusted downpipe hopper.
For this repair I decided to use Milliput Black. Milliput is a versatile cold setting epoxy putty which adheres to and will seal or bond metals, wood, plastic, glass, tile, brick and cement.
There are five different types of Milliput - 1) Standard (yellow-grey); 2) Silver Grey; 3) Super Fine White; 4) Black; and 5) Terracotta. Each has a slightly different use, so you need to visit the Milliput website www.milliput.com and decide which one is most appropriate for your repair.
I decided to buy Milliput Black as it's particularly good for repairing cast iron. The putty comes in two sausage shaped tubes, and you simply cut equal lengths of each and mix them together by hand until you have an even colour.
I prepared the cast iron hopper by scraping the loose paint off with a paint scraper, removing the rust with wire wool and a wire brush attacment on my drill, and then a light spray with CT1's Multisolve Spray, to remove the debris and to degrease the surface in preparation for the Milliput. Finally, I gave the surface a light sand to abrade it and improve adhesion.
I then applied the putty - which sets in 3 hours without shrinking.
At all stages from initial mixing to final setting, Milliput responds to the use of water, so you can use water whilst applying the Milliput and to smooth it with a wet finger to obtain a perfect shape and texture for your repair. This is one of the reasons Milliput is so great, because you can get your repair to a really smooth, precise shape without sanding - in a way that you can't achieve with most other fillers.
Once set, the Milliput can be sanded, and then I then primed the section of repair with Bonda Rust Primer, and then applied a top coat of Johnstone's Stormshield Gloss, mixed to Farrow and Ball Downpipe.
So that's another hole fixed. Stay tuned for next week's video where I'll be glueing a section of gutter back together with JB Weld Epoxy adhesive.

This is the perfect stuff, exactly what I need to repair an old copper Canoe Sculpture I found with a Metal Detector that has some holes!
Excellent video. I have often wondered how to repair holes in metal in an easy way. I will certainly give this a try. Charlie I have been learning so much from your videos. You inspired me to make the floating desk which my wife used to work on making our daughters wedding dress. The dress was beautiful and we had a great wedding. I hope Charlie you keep making videos.
Charlie Some advice when cutting the pieces of putty: Clean the blade thoroughly between cutting the two parts of the epoxy. You left some white part on the black part of the putty, and that will cure and can cause chemical reactions throughout the remaining black putty. SImply wipe the knife clean before cutting the other piece of putty. Your putty will last longer and work for a longer time.
I've used milliput for years in my hobby but always forget it's other uses.
Thanks for a great vid and reminder
Excellent repair. I love the fact that you are restoring your cast ironwork around the house. It is a much an architectural feature as anything. Beats plastic all day. I wish I had it!
Thanks Patrick. Couldn't agree more. Scraping off the rust I keep revealing all these date stamps and insignias - they definitely add character to the house in a way that plastic couldn't - and they've been there since the 1970s!
Fantastic job. I have 3 small holes in my front steel door. I'm motivated by this video and I'm going to fix the door myself. THANK YOU
Nice one Lynn. You'll do a great job with this stuff!! Thanks for the comment!!
@@CharlieDIYte OH, NO Charlle. I can't find where to buy Milliput here in Canada. I really did love the video and am motivated so I'm going to see if I can find something similar to Milliput. Thank you for your support
Always wondered about Milliput Charlie and now I know, Thank's for the share look forward to your next video !!! Brian, Halessowen .
Thanks for your interesting video. I learn something and you are upbeat so it's also fun too.

As always really informative and interesting.
Good stuff. Thanks for sharing
Love the grey finish
what a great finish enjoyed the video.
I found this stuff a few years back, having used the grey stuff that loctite make it always set too quick and was horrible to get off your hands. Milliput is nice because it washes off with water, it takes longer to go off and harden but once it does it's like rock.
Nice work.😀👍
Thanks Norman - good to hear from you!
i use milliput to fix everything ! its amazing stuff ! ive used it to repair a crack in a motorcycle exhaust pipe ! milliput set solid and exhaust doesn't leak at all ... great stuff
It's awesome Clive isn't it! There was a radio program on the dangers of DIY dentistry and a guy had redone a filling with Milliput white - lasted well over 10 years 🤣
Thanks so much for your videos!
...Ladybirds everywhere!
Charlie, every video of yours I watch I keep meaning to ask what music is playing? Great videos by the way. Would love to see more regular videos! :)
Thanks David. It's from Envato Market (Audio Jungle). I paid about $15 for it and it's called Modern Fashion by Fugu Vibes. But I can't actually find it when I search the website now!
@@CharlieDIYte Just found it! Thanks again Charlie. audiojungle.net/item/modern-fashion/20699358?s_rank=37
Good work!
Rustins rust remover is available at Toolstation
...and Amazon!
Seems a lot easier to use than last weeks car 'Bog' filler. although I know it was a bigger hole. So next week I'll be waiting to see how the glue job goes. :D
It certainly is, Peter! Thanks for watching these vids!
Thanks Charlie
How did the milliput feel for strength on the chipped bit???
Looked great...
I didn't want to ply it too much, but I can't see it ever coming away of its own accord.
That Rustins rust remover is essentially phosphoric acid. Look for "Clarke Rust remover" works exactly the same, and is cheap!
Rustins is also STILL AVAILABLE through Toolstation.
Cheers for that 👍
@@CharlieDIYte Absolutely no problem. Very informative video and you introduced me to Milliput, which I will be ordering ASAP! You helped me so more than happy to help you back! :) Edit: I've never used the Rustins myself, but that Clarke stuff is particularly potent and will burn like all hell if you get it on your hands, so be careful! Haha.
Good use of milliput, I use it in my turning projects and it is very hard when dried. what are those little bugs that are walking all over the house wall
Ladybirds ?
Umph! My hated nickname when I was little ... being a fairly small human ... Milliputter
I wonder if it would repair cast iron radiators. I have city heating system that get very hot and i tryed more iron epoxy ( more like fiber glass idea )that didnt really stand the heat.
It's worth a try!
I'm thinking of using this to support an unusual shaped piece of cast aluminium that I'm clamping. Was thinking if I sprayed both surfaces with silicon spray it would stop it from sticking. Any suggestions? Talcum powder to stop it adhering?
Is the putty magnetic ?
Hy, I'm not sure if iv already asked this so I apologise if I am repeating myself. Would this miliputty stuff work for making my metal models I do. I plan to make models by using this to connect peiceof metal to each other.
What happen to the Rust treatment part? Prior to priming
Could I use this to fix a leaking joint on a cast iron gutter?
You could, but you might be best to use gutter sealant, which is a sort of rubberised mastik, in case you ever need to take the joint apart, or, if you really want to go to town on it you could buy a proper joint kit bit.ly/2OWN6Fz but you have to be careful knocking out the old nuts and bolts as the cast iron is quite brittle and can crack.
Nice one Charlie... I’ll give that a go on my toilet down pipe...😊😊👍👍👍
would this work to replace 2 small rivets in secateurs. The non blade half is made of 2 parts which were rivetted together
No, I think you'll need to get some bolts to replace the broken rivets?
@@CharlieDIYte Thanks but bolts would stop the secareur blades from engaging. One blade, the non sharpeded, is made of two overlapping parts, riveted together
@@valeriegray1576 Oh I see, so the rivets are basically just holding the blade to the secateurs? This stuff might be better ruclips.net/video/QkL7Ua641Ss/видео.html Worth a try if the alternative is throwing away the secateurs 🤔
Same as ferropre or kneed it
We're they ladybirds?
I've used isopon and milleput both are excellent, looking forward to the next one, never used that so will be interested to see result!
Yes, they kept landing on the wet paint!
Charlie DIYte. Thought they were! In 1976 (the year of millions of ladybirds) I painted the outside of my house, they would land on the backs of my legs and we supposed they were after the salt in my sweat!
How to repair holes in cladding, boss?
Is the cladding wood? You can use Milliput on wood, but I'd probably use a 2 part wood filler.
@@CharlieDIYte plastic cladding for a shower.
Ah, then you need Milliput White www.milliput.com/white.html

check out JB Weld, it’s the best out there
That's my next video!
it’s good stuff, has high heat resistance and is used to build up cylinder head ports in race engines.
Wow - I didn't know that! I just wish it was a little more viscous and set quicker 🤔
Such a bodge
