I've been contemplating buying my first new 60s Les Paul Standard, and on Black Friday I happened upon one with a GORGEOUS top in Ocean Blue at my local shop, and I had to have it. Not only does it play and sound great, but they were having a 10% off sale and also gave me a 10% Veterans discount! I also have a Silverburst Les Paul Studio that I bought new in 2009. It has an ebony board and the 490/498s and sounds completely different...but the necks are exactly alike! I have to say, with all the Gibson bashing lately, I have zero complaints. I just wish I didn't have to wait until I was retired to own one.
My grandmother passed away and my mother wants to buy us kids something around 3k to remember her for, something that lasts pref. whole lifetime. I was thinking this but the thing is I've only played for like a year, seems kinda too good for a noob but then again, if and when I keep this hobby up I might be able to justify it to myself.
I have a 2022 60s Unburst Standard. I love it. I tried the 50s standard but found the neck too thick. I changed out the top hats for gold speed dials. I grew up in the 70s and the Norlin era guitars I drooled over as a young teen had speed dials. The top hats are in a bag in my case. I am in my mid fifties and my family bought me my guitar, I feel really privileged. I live in Australia and a les Paul Standard is over $4500 Aussie dollars.
I love my 2023 LP 60’s standard in Ice Tea burst. QC is solid, still came with the “baby picture” and the case was Canadian made 🇨🇦. The top has a nice flame and imho it is a good looking guitar. More importantly it feels comfortable with the 60’s slim taper neck ( which I prefer) and I really like the sound and tones I get from the 60’s Burtsbuckers. It was a guitar I had been wanting for a while and it hasn’t disappointed. I picked it up last April at my local Long & McQuade during Gibson Month. It was $500 off at a little over $3k, with the Gibson price jump they are now just under $4k. It seems that any guitar price in USD is $1,000 more in Canada. Needless to say I was happy to get mine when I did. I really like the look of the classic white or the sparkling burgundy in the custom colours but I’ll pass. Kinda have my eye on one of the custom colour SG Standard 61’s in classic white. Great review as always Trogly. Thanks
If you are looking to buy a 60s Standard, a used Custom Shop R0 can be found for 3k-3.5k. And if you don't mind having a plain top, look for a "G0", they can go for cheaper sometimes
I purchased the '60 "model" a couple years ago. Make sure you thoroughly check the QC on the guitar prior to purchasing (if possible) mine required a truss rod adjustment, sanded the nut slightly and I put locking Grover's on the headstock. The G loves to dive and I really have a hard time, in general, keeping it in tune. However, user error and inexperience with a Les Paul plays a major factor I'm sure! Always wanted one and this was a good opportunity to own a LP. I am thinking about selling it and checking out a custom. Rock on everyone! 🤘
I got my 2020 60s standard in triburst as my first Gibson and it’s still one of my favorite guitars. Been considering upgrading to a custom shop Les Paul but have yet to play one I like significantly more than my 60s standard.
I bought a 2023 black LP Custom and had to send it back!! It was buzzy and came with a case that had cheap non positive latching latches that I could lift the lid and they would just come unlatched. Definitely not worth the 5K price tag! My Standards played perfect strait out of the boxes and had better cases. Definitely play a custom before shelling out the cash for one!
@@racrx7 What a bummer! Sorry to hear the custom was a let down. Well said. I’ve considered ordering a custom shop from reverb or somewhere online but I might think twice unless I can try one out first or easily return the guitar. Phillip McKnight has a youtube video reviewing a Custom Shop R0 and he found a bunch of flaws/issues. At that price point should be able to order sight unseen but guess that’s not the case. Glad your standards have served you well though. Makes me know I’m not crazy for wanting to stick to my standard 60s. I’ve played a few custom shops and have hard time justifying the price difference.
The Gibson Garage is the best. I know you hated the black 80s tribute Gibson Explorer… but I ended up getting one of the classic white versions from the Gibson Garage and it was phenomenal. Not one flaw, beautiful rosewood, and plays so sweet. However, I think the pick ups are terrible so I’m gonna swap those out.
I recently got a 60's Standard mid 2023 in Honey Lemon Burst at Guitar Center. Really great flame and something I don't see mentioned a lot is that the binding, and all the plastics are the cream type "aged" color. Really goes well with the finish. Also, they have the lighter back. A lot of people mistake my guitar for a R9 or R0 and honestly, it's the best Les Paul I've ever played and I've played several Customs and even spent time with a Collectors Choice. Granted this is the ONLY 60's Standard I've played and maybe I just got a really good one but it's a big win in my book and I will always recommend them and always recommend playing the guitar before you buy it if you can.
I got one in ICED TEA SUNBURST. It looked the most like the photos of REAL Les Pauls from that era, that had not obviously been sitting in the sun for a long time. Still had some of the red left in the burst area. Financed over what, 30 months, no interest... I'm still thrilled. I preferred the 60s version for slightly hotter pickups, better tuners and slimmer neck. $2499.
I liked the 2017 colors. In ya seafaom grean classic but I really liked the smoke house studio with the binding. I should have bought one when the were 1100.
I have 3 60s Les Paul Standards. A 2019 and 2 2023s (Pelham blue and purple). They're great and I can't imagine how much better earlier models could have possibly been.
Great looking LP! I have gotten a couple LP standard 50s at Wildwood and they are fantastic. They have "hand picked tops" so had a good selection of tops to choose from and they came set up very well. I also recently snagged an LP 50s standard "exclusive dirty lemon" from Chicago Music Exchange and its killer too! I have too may LPs!
I was looking to a pick up Standard 60s recently, ended up buying a used Heritage H150 Custom Core, for $600 cheaper than a new Standard. Custom shop level construction - long neck tenon, ABR1 bridge, customshop case. Hard deal to beat! Btw, when are you going to feature Heritage guitars?
Only a GIBSON is good enough is engrained in people’s brains. It just is. HERITAGE makes an awesome guitar but God forbid you have to sell one on the used market. Hope you love yours for life.
Please, continue showing close up video of the binding in the cutaway section. This is an important area that Gibson hasn’t necessarily been overly consistent in how they deal with it (i.e., thick binding, maple top showing, maple top stained to match mahogany body, etc.). It becomes even more of a focus with all these “new” color choices Gibson is offering.👍🏼
I just purchased a 60's LP Standard in Ebony finish since I have a few 50's Standards. I love the guitar but I'm not a fan of the Reflector style knobs. I was wondering if I can change them to another style knob and still remain "period correct". I've seen a few 1960 & 1961 with the Bonnet style (50's style) knobs and a few 1969 with the gold speed knobs. Does anyone know if they are true period correct or did the owner just change them?
I have several standards between 2021-2023 and they are all top notch right out of the boxes with beautiful tops. Even picked up a SW exclusive Heritage Cherry Flame that should probably be considered more of a quilt top! Even got a sweet deal on it because of an issue I had with a Black Custom that I returned.
I bought this exact 60s dark purple burst in December 2023. Mine arrived with a beautiful top and a misaligned nut. I liked the look and everything about it so I decided to spend just a little more money and get a bone nut installed. I was surprised a $3000 USA Gibson would make it out to a customer with such a glaring error, but I made the choice to keep it and do the nut upgrade.

If I didn’t have to worry about money, I’d personally own a custom model or a model with the axcess heal cut. Though even then it’s hard to pick what Les Paul suits me. In terms of standards, classics or moderns and even traditional models. I thought for a while the 60s standard or classic would be my choice because of the slim tapper neck, but 50s rounded necks have grown on me recently. It’s especially strange given how I kind of detest fender C necks, but I suppose Gibson has a specific touch to their C’s that feels more natural around my palm. Of course that’s not even touching on specs, color options and weight for each one.
I think the Moderns give you the most bang for your buck. More tone choices, a nice curved heel. Grover tuners, Burst Bucker and Burstbucker +, and very nice colors (I just purchased a Seafoam Green one). I also own a new Les Paul Supreme which is a Modern with some nice cosmetic appointments. I also have a 2019 Standard which is like a Modern with the Push/Pull pots and a Les Paul Slash. In all 4. To top it off, I also have an ES-345 in 60's Cherry and an older CS-336 in Ebony. My next guitar though will be a PRS ( I already have 4 PRSs and I have been overlooking them recently in favor of Gibson.
Question, my paperwork says 2023 as well and is ocean blue. The case candy for yours also says 2023, but you call it a 2024 model. Do you call it 2024 because guitars are like cars where they’re building next years model in the current year to be able to have them at the stores in time? Or is it a 2023 model It doesn’t matter it’s a fantastic guitar. I’m just curious.
My serial number on my Ocean Blue Les Paul says it's a 2023 also, sold as a 2024. I bought it anyway just because I love how it plays looks and sounds and the serial number rocks! It was made LATE in 2023, the 333rd day!
I’m sorry for the dumb question but what would be the dealer exclusive colour? I own a 50’s heritage cherry sunburst with a pretty cool top. Is that any special? Thank you!
Slim or baseball bat necks never botheted me. I can play fine on either neck. My SG has a fat neck but my Classic gold top has a slim neck. @garycastronova7939
I bought my 60s standard in 2019 and my 50’s standard in 2020. They’re great guitars. Definitely recommend them. I actually returned a custom reissue for a refund a few months ago because I kept going back to my standards.
@@homer7504 the custom I returned was a 54’ staple pickup reissue. The binding was a little sloppy and overall my standards that I have are better QC wise.
Thats a sweet option if you want something different from the traditional style sunburst, lemon burst, iced tea burst etc. The purple is very striking. I like the 60s version and would buy that one if I was in the market
i thought this was going to be about actual 60s les pauls, but certainly these 60s reissues are just as good as the present les pauls at a much better used price for sure and the demo shop does have many. i admire them all the time.. not the mod shop! the demo shop.
Any clues why they didn't put the vintage tuners on the 60s like they did on the 60s SGs? If you would change the tuners to vintage ones, what tuners would you go for?
3:32 like you really read your comments 🤪🤪‼️🤩‼️ I’ve commented 1 million times and never a response also when I look through other peoples I don’t see a response from you but other than that I love the show
It would be nice if Gibson USA started using a long neck tenon on all of their LP models as Heritage does. For what they're charging, they should, IMO.
I bought a Les Paul Classic back in 2022. From what I've been told, there's not much of a difference between my guitar and a '60s Standard. Aside from the weight relief, push/pull controls, and maybe the maple cap.....I hear mine is very similar to a Standard. Mine was a lot cheaper too.
Got mine yesterday, the iced tea colour. I was afraid for some imperfections seeing a lot of reviews, but mine seems perfect (on the outside, have not opened it). BTW the colour of the fretboard on mine is gorgeous. Your review helped a lot.
I wonder what your thoughts will be on the gibson amps. I personally think they’re really cool. And for gibson standards they really aren’t that expensive. Limited functions for the price but the gibson name and “reissue” status hikes that
Thank you for this excellent review, Mr. Trogly. That purple finish is beautiful. Does the guitar have good tuning stability? (My luck with the Studio and Tribute that I had was not so good as far as them staying in tune).
From a Gibson employee: "I worked at the Memphis plant for a while. You will never know when you will have to work on Saturday. Usually, this is more often than not. They push numbers instead of quality, hoping the end result will meet the bottom line numbers. The masses will come back time and again to buy these guitars because of the name on the headstock. I have deep inside 1st hand knowledge proving that these guitars are anything but quality. Glue joints that have no glue, super glue on top of wood glue when the first glue joint didn't hold, truss rods that aren't even close to centered down the neck, should I go on?? I personally saved this division a pocket full of money with major obstacles I showed them how to overcome, (which they happily implemented) and I was never once rewarded, but on the contrary I was harassed by management and given an abundance of lip service, and unfortunately I cannot go into further detail at the moment. If you need a job because you are hurting for money, then look to this place as a temp solution. Turn over is off the charts!!" So yeah - screw Gibson/Epiphone. I have two les paul style guitars - both Fernandes, and both less expensive and infinitely better built than Gibson.
I have had many Pauls, still have 3, but recently I bought a Harley Benton Lemon Drop Les Paul. 129 euros only! It literally rips the shit out my Gibsons! Who knew? Coil taps, better neck shape and HALF the weight! What more?
Prices are way out of my range, even a Tribute is too much. I picked up a PRS SE Tremonti because I wanted the “Les Paul” but with a tremolo and slightly hotter pickups. To get that from Gibson it would probably have to be an Access Custom Floyd rose for a lot more than I paid. Oddly enough, the bridge pickup is 4-conductor, but the neck is only 2… and that’s the same on the Core model. Very odd.
Another dealers exclusive are the wildwood select 50’s and 60’s, dark cherry burst and honeyburst, they select every top supposedly and they also come with a different pair of pickups, they call it wildwood select 59 tribute humbuckers,
I would definitely buy that Dark Purple Burst if we could get them in Australia. Unfortunately Gibson shits on Australia because there are only 29.6 million of us.
I can't handle the mother of toilet seat inlays for the price. The inlays are also more rounded because they are cnc bit cut. It they had sharp edges and looked more like the darker originals I would be happier. The could use laser for thismimo. Also the bridge screws go into a metal threaded portion instead of the body which also does not look original. So that all said they sound and play great but the mods to modern cheaper manufacturing change the looks alot from the 50s and 60s reissues we used to get not that long ago for the same price. I5 bothers me that whay used to be "standard" gets pushed forward a few thousand dollars per year. I don't see how it's that expensive to make.
Standards are perfectly fine guitars but, the Classic was a step above and for way less money. The Modern is also superior for the same money. I just don't see the draw to the Standard in recent years? I have 15 Les Pauls and none of them Standards because in my opinion the Standard is just too "Standard" for the price of 3K. I would never buy a current Custom either for the price. Back when I bought my first Les Paul, a Custom was about $100 more than a Standard. Now, double...
While the prices on these have gone up over the past 5 years, you have a lot more color and used options which makes up for it!

Thats a sweet option if you want something different from the traditional style sunburst, lemon burst, iced tea burst etc. The purple is very striking. I like the 60s version and would buy that one if I was in the market
Very nice Lawful Evil rendition of I'm Lovin It. I'm a Fender/Peavey USA guy, but man, I do love that LP. killer tone.
Wish I still had my 1968 LP Custom black beauty w/ohsc I had in high school in the 70’s.
I noticed in the case candy section, no "baby picture" Are they not doing that anymore?
That is correct. Baby photos ended August 17th, 2023
@@Trog That's too bad. Such a nice touch.... Great work with your videos.
Yeah, never got mine with the 50s. ☹️
that looks great in purple
How do you find the purple burst in the gibson garage? I'm not seeing an option to buy anything
i thought this was going to be about actual 60s les pauls, but certainly these 60s reissues are just as good as the present les pauls at a much better used price for sure and the demo shop does have many. i admire them all the time.. not the mod shop! the demo shop.
Did you notice the Theodore with humbuckers in the Gibson amp promo?
In that new video?
Yeah the ebony Theodore he played had humbuckers in it.
@vadenk4433 my bad I was looking at the other Gibson Amp promo video. I see what you're seeing now 😅 looks good
I bought a 60s Standard from Wildwood last year in January. It’s fantastic. I haven’t done anything to. Love it.
Any clues why they didn't put the vintage tuners on the 60s like they did on the 60s SGs? If you would change the tuners to vintage ones, what tuners would you go for?
Ooo purple. And streaks of red on the rosewood? Very nice.
3:32 like you really read your comments 🤪🤪‼️🤩‼️ I’ve commented 1 million times and never a response also when I look through other peoples I don’t see a response from you but other than that I love the show
How do those 60s pickups compare to tim shaws ?
I dig the ebony and the ox blood finishes.
I see this one at Guitar Center now. Did they make it a GC exclusive now?
Cool stuff. R6 & R0 & we’re totally covered Les Paul wise at my place.
Les Paul standard 60s is what I went with about a month ago and I love it
It would be nice if Gibson USA started using a long neck tenon on all of their LP models as Heritage does. For what they're charging, they should, IMO.
I love explorers , I own a few , and the 60’s neck comes close to my beloved explorers
They’re completely different. Pick one up , play it and see for yourself.
Limited functions for the price but the gibson name and “reissue” status hikes that
the pic ups sound fantastic, nice and bright!
That purple burst is something else but it's far from traditional if you care sweet Paul 👍🤘
Hey Trogly! How did contacting the Gibson Garage work for you- do you call, ask them to send pictures, and they will ship it to you? Thanks!
Smoked that thing! I’ve been thinking about grabbing one
Thank you for this excellent review, Mr. Trogly. That purple finish is beautiful. Does the guitar have good tuning stability? (My luck with the Studio and Tribute that I had was not so good as far as them staying in tune).
That is a fine looking guitar.
Yeah. I love this color. Beautiful
What a gorgeous top
I own a Cherry Sunburst (not Heritage) Les Paul.
It is maybe a exclusive color.
it has more vivid red than the Heritage. I like it😎
Is the hardware nickel or chrome?
I own a 2007 GT in the orange finish and it’s my go to over all the other guitars I own!
Exclusives have a OD 50s, I never would have guessed. Thank you. Ü
Hell yes they are worth buying! The standards are all pleked and play like butter and if you got small hands the neck is golden
The horn cut is good. Congrats Gibson USA team
Turn over is off the charts!!"
So yeah - screw Gibson/Epiphone. I have two les paul style guitars - both Fernandes, and both less expensive and infinitely better built than Gibson.
This story comes from when they were under different management. Memphis is no longer a thing
Hell yes they are!!
The purple is mouth watering .
What's your strap?
out of production from Levy's
how about a studio in this finish?
great review! thank you!
That sure is a purty top!
Very odd.
Glad I snagged one with a killer top in iced tea back in '21 before the price hikes!
IMO, the ice tea is the best burst color Gibson has ever done.
I got my 2020 ice tea burst for 2500. The first price hike happened 3 weeks after I bought it.
Another dealers exclusive are the wildwood select 50’s and 60’s, dark cherry burst and honeyburst, they select every top supposedly and they also come with a different pair of pickups, they call it wildwood select 59 tribute humbuckers,
Their photography is beautiful
I have one from the end of 2021..love it and great top..plays and sounds great
I so want one of these.
As usual, Thanks Austin!!!
I want that guitar but frustrated I can’t get it in Australia
That purple would look so killer with all gold hardware and black plastics. I may have to buy one and do that to it
Thought black knobs would have looked good
@@johnfoskey7855 Hell yes
I was thinking the same. Maybe not gold hardware per se, but definitely black plastics.
Yup, exactly what I was thinking.
That’s a beautiful example Mr Trogly.
I would definitely buy that Dark Purple Burst if we could get them in Australia. Unfortunately Gibson shits on Australia because there are only 29.6 million of us.
That's a neat color 😍
I'd set this right beside your Purple Widow Custom, Austin! She's a beaut! I know Prince would own one of these.
Love this color!
good looking guitar with a nice top....if you like "purple".....
The tribute also kicked ass
I just got a plain top black 60s standard seems everone wants a burst or flame top i wanted to be different love it bye the way if you can get one
