The game idea I keep getting is something like a character progression, starting as him in Smallville for a short period as a teen, and having the time jump forward through the game, but open areas of the game as it does. So, Metropolis opens next as open world with story (Rocksteady Arkham game style), then the world opens, and then a few other small sections of alien planets open to fight various alien enemies (Lobo, help Green Lanterns, etc.). Culminating with Cyborg jumping you to Apokalips to defeat Darkseid when he invades in the final act. Cameos from DC heroes can also help in parts of the game and you could go back and see past areas too. That is just my basic idea.

One could easily imagine a Superman game where you cannot die, but the “health bar” is something like a Good vs. Evil meter, or perhaps an early Assassins Creed sync meter to determine how much you were adhering to Clark’s principles.

It either needs to be heavily story based with something about taking down lex luthor through means of the law or if you want cool intergalactic action, it can have enemy types with magical powers who, since we are assuming superman cannot be killed, who's purpose is to corner/trap superman in a spell or something. It can be like a dimension or something that superman can't escape so this gives him reason to fight them.
So if a player leaves the control and thinks superman wont die so it's fine, he will actually get trapped by the magic ability, game over, you failed to save the world.
And for big action, the villain needs to be a powerhouse such as Brainiac or Darkseid, someone who can and will put the hurt on superman.

Absolutely agree with the idea that they can pull off a Superman game and I had no idea the unreal engine thing existed! The focus never had to be Superman dying, and graphically I would love to see bullets bouncing off the S with the what we have today , the conflict being who he saves or how he does i mean this stuff can be done and your idea about a teenage superman game would be sick! I imagine the upgrade system finally maxing out making you the invincible superman you are supposed to be when you finally reached the end of the game🔥

  • @Joskilani

Pretty interesting. I'm not a Superman fan myself but I like the discussion you brought up, the only real reason that Superman games failed in the past is really because gaming hardware wasn't ready for it, but it totally is now. I like the idea you brought up of "progressing as Superman", or getting his powers throughout the game. Maybe the villain could also progress in a way (throughout the story) and gain more knowledge of what Superman is, finally discovering kryptonite? That way even if you fully develop Superman, there's still that challenge in the end game.
Also I wonder, would this game have kind of a power system like inFamous, where you gain powers at certain points in the story and have free rein to upgrade whichever as you go? Or maybe you could have total freedom and you get to choose which powers you could develop as a young Clark Kent. That would probably be harder to design, but that'd be a really cool concept.
I think if there were to be any Superman game in current gaming, the idea you brought up of a young Clark developing his powers would work best in a video game sense. And for those wanting a power fantasy Superman, that could just be the post-game, lol

    • @joseortizreflects
      @joseortizreflects 2 года назад

Yes, there certainly should be post-game content, particularly content that requires of all powers and upgrades to complete.

    • @Zoogi.e
      @Zoogi.e 2 года назад +2

I can see the young Clark thing working, but going for a fully grown Superman works as well. Superman Returns had a cool concept of giving the city a health bar. And bosses would still be able to harm you (Superman has fought plenty of folks than can harm him; Kryptonite isn’t the only thing). As for upgrades, I mean it’s a video game. There are a lot of video games I’ve played where you can upgrade your characters. You don’t exactly have to make “sense” of the upgrades. Spider-Man and Batman don’t feel the need to apply a story reason to upgrades, so why should Superman?

A Superman game could DEFINITELY WORK, Superman is one of the most compelling characters in comics
A lot of people though either say he's "bOriNg" or a "GaRy SuE"
But if Done right you could be one of THE BEST GAMES OF ALL TIME
      1. GAME MECHANICS
Don't Nerf his strength, make the player😊 control it,
      Make a" sweet spot "meter
too much and you could cause too much collateral damage, too little and you can't save the day
It has to be just right, 👍
Also his flying gets faster and more powerful the more you use it
At a certain point you should be able to break the sound barrier and fly to other planets and galaxies 🌌☄️🚀
      2. LEVELS
There'll be three levels to game based on Clark's identity
"CLARK KENT "the reporter 👨‍🏫, "SUPERMAN" the hero 🦸, and "KAL-EL" the alien 👽
The "CLARK KENT" levels we'll have you doing regular things, but also trying to uncover lex luthor's dirty dealings, acting a detective like in the Arkham games
"SUPERMAN" levels will have you on rescue missions, stopping robberies, and battling bad guys like Metallo, the Mxyzptlk, and lobo
The" KAL-EL" levels will have you dealing space matters, fighting with enemies like BRAINIAC, DARK SIDE, and discovering the history of Krypton and interacting around in the fortress of solitude
      3 STORY
What makes Superman the great character is his humanity
He's not a dark and edgy person
He's not a paragon or a Gary Sue
He has lost many battles, hasn't been able to save countless people
But He often takes time off his day to help people in the smallest way he can
He's often have to cope and control his powers,
and being The last of his kind, he is often had no one to relate to
It's only his parents that made him the man he is because they love Clark for who he was
It's the small things that matter to him the most
People in this life that make it worthwhile
That's what the game should focus on most
The wisdom and responsibility he has for his self and for others of how we can be good people is what makes Superman great
Long live the Man of steel 🦸

That is the only way I can see superman in a game can work. Look, he's an overpowered superhero with not a lot of limitations. And despite what people think they want, limitations are what make games fun.
Like what makes insomniac's sunset overdrive so fun is that being on the ground is a death sentence. So it encourages grinding, wall running and bouncing off of objects.
With superman, how can his move set be fun at his peak? Flying especially. It can look cool, but looks can only last for so long

I would love a Superman game!!!
Here’s my pitch: set the game in Smallville and have the game play like a Bully-style sim with Clark Kent as a teenager. He has to balance his powers with the desire to just be a regular kid. You can explore the small open world there as you build up your powers and begin to do hero-type activities. The story could explore an interesting twist on the relationship between Jonathan Kent and Clark, as well as flesh out the high school relationships with characters like Lana and Brad. The game ends culminating with Clark leaving Smallville to head North to the Fortress of Solitude. This is the first game, a sort of smaller adventure like Bully that sets the stage for a larger sequel.
The sequel has Clark becoming Superman in Metropolis. The sim elements remain with Superman having to manage his alter-ego at the Daily Planet. The open world has you walk around as Clark Kent, with the ability to change into Superman with the press of a button.

There can be a perfect Superman game! I would love an interpretation that focuses on a powerset the Superman: The Animated Series use, not super strong but still hope! With character/story writing like Insomniac and Santa Monica, both with Miles' side-missions which show a beautiful side of community which a Superman game NEEDS, and with God of War's main campaign that struggles with the humanity and complexity of relationships, which is perfect for Superman as well! Imagine using the Phantom Zone as a way to face strong Kryptonians or alien life-forms ala the Valkyries from God of War!

Open world Superman game with Lex being the main villain who pulls out all the stops and all the all time great baddies to fight Superman. We have small Spider-Man esque side missions where he literally saves cats from trees and others where GL says he could use a hand or maybe Batman needs him to track down some intergang members who stole something from Gotham. The game opens with Superman stopping a car accident and then BOOM Metallo comes out and a boss fight ensues. We see Metallo, Bizaro, Mongul*, Lex Bots, Intergang, Kalibak*, Parasyte and maybe GeoForce. These will be the BIG boss fights and Kalibka and Mongul could have plot lines that extend to either DLC or a sequel. Personally I’d want a sequel that’s partially set on Monguls WarWorld where we see badass alien bosses and cool goons ending with an epic 1v2 Mongul and his wife V Superman.

I’d love a superman game based on the ‘Earth One’ series.. where you can progress powers as you become familiar with them, have sections where you are drained of your powers & the fear that he might one day accidentally hurt many people because he’s not aware of his own powers!
Whilst you can’t ‘die’ you can still be threatened or it could be that you fail to save people and the npc’s death is a way of failing?
Would like RPG choices mechanic too

I think something that could be really interesting with a superman game is the feeling of having that much power but not being able to save everyone. Imagine a game that had a focus on saving as many people as possible, maybe a robbery in one place and a burning building in the other, and the goal is to use your powers in the most efficient and creative way to stop both. And you could do something like this alongside traditional combat against foes that can match superman (of which there are many).
A morality system also seems to fit perfectly for a superman game. Play around with the fact that superman doesn't kill people even if he easily can..
I think letting us feel as powerful as superman is and still having equal opponents is possible, just would require some out the box thinking.
    Great video !

Maybe like a game like infamous or undertale where depending on how nice or evil you are you get a different endings and powers.
An evil super man where the town gets stronger stopping him or Superman that pulls its punches essential making yourself “vulnerable”. That can lead to different, abilities trees, play styles, difficulty customization. There would be replay ability, choose out of all the powers, and excuse to have increased difficulty.

I remember playing Superman Returns on PS2 and having a lot of fun just flying around or how quickly I could get from one end of the map to the other. Then on occasion fighting the enemy types of that game. I like the game idea you suggested where you are learning your powers, an origin story game... A little bonus thing/ detail I would add, have either the first 1 to 2 hours or just a small tutorial level in Smallville before going to Metropolis. But if they want to already go straight for a established Superman in game, they could simply just use an enemy or group of enemies that can do damage by using a story excuse that they are magic based. Either way I'm more than ready for another open world Superman game.

I feel like there is a LOT of potential, I think that the margin for success is extremely narrow. Because from a story standpoint I think getting that done would be relatively straightforward, get a good team of writers and you could get a cromulent story. I think the problem arises with the gameplay loop. I think that there is definitely some group of people that, when they put their minds together, they can make a gameplay experience that can be immersive. But then with this kind of game, the risk of it being completely lack-luster gameplay wise is extremely high because of the nature of Superman's fights. A lot of his confrontations and stories aren't mortally threatening to Superman himself, but the world and the people around him, and translating that into gameplay is extremely difficult for even a seasoned developer to accomplish. Personally, I think maybe a Rogue-like using time manipulation could work (idk, Superman gets thrown back in time and he has to fight his way back to the boss every time after hes thrown back) or perhaps a extremely well thought out open world, or hell something along the lines of a game light Sifu where you are extremely engaged with the combat but the risk is high because Clark's been deprived of his powers or some crap like that. Nevertheless, it's a task to get the gameplay down. I love good Superman stories, so I hope a team can set out and back one home, but I think we might not get one for some time more until someone figures out how to get it done.

I played the Arkham trilogy religiously, and when we got the news that there was this new unannounced game from rocksteady, there was some rumors it was going to be a superman game. It turned out to be the 4th installment of batman but before I knew that I just kept fantasizing what it would be like to play superman in a game that plays just like Arkham. Like all the gadgets that Batman uses would be replaced by superman's eye beam, ice breath, etc.

I really enjoy the experience of being OP in a video game. I think part of the reason everyone likes super hero games is because of that unstoppable feeling you get playing as a Spider-man, Wolverine, or even Batman. Lets be honest, taking out dozens of armed men with ease is unrealistic. Why not a superman game.

For level progression they could go the route of Mister Mxyzptlk taking his powers or depowering him. There could be a whole game on him escaping the phantom zone with a lower power level but learning more skills and interesting ways to use powers other than beating on things. There are literally decades of comics to pull from, it shouldn't be that hard if developers are willing to look (IMO). Superman's weakness has always been his struggle to help EVERYBODY because he's so insanely powerful, imagine a game where you had to make choices on who to save and then dealing with the consequences.

There were two things I really liked about the Superman Returns video game. First, I felt that they nailed the flying gameplay. That was really fun. Second, using the city as a "health meter" was a really cool idea. Since Superman is basically invulnerable, that was an interesting way of adding tension to battles. I'd like it if they'd make a AAA Superman game. They could always lessen his powers like they did in the animated series so you're not indestructible. I'd be ok with that.

I've got a suggestion in realistically "nerfing" Superman -- Kryptonite towers are scattered throughout Metropolis, destroying one essentially "levels him up" we can add some twists where some towers can only be found and destroyed via story missions, defeating strong enemies guarding the thing or have them be scavenger hunt puzzles a la Riddler segments from the Arkham games

I myself am not a huge superman fan per-say but I love comics and so I have a crazy amount of respect for the character, I would love a game that is to superman what Arkham is to Batman, sure some issues but generally considered peak fiction about the character. The most interesting thing to me is that it would be a power fantasy game in an open world that wouldn't involve being morally grey or darker, seeing as the power fantasy games that really come to my mind are Prototype 1 and 2, Infamous and very little else, so being able to go around feeling that powerful and actually saving people instead of turning them to gore would be a nice change. final thing I could add here on my thoughts would be a Parasite boss battle IDK how they could do it but a boss that relies on you using your abilities in the most clever ways possible is always something I want from games.

So basically smallville the game . Give a lot of leeway in terms of being able to build up super man , have the upgrade tree if their is one achievable enough where it’s literally impossible to not be SUPERMAN by the time the final boss rolls around . And having him young trying to work for the paper would be some fantastic Spider-Man parallels so vast majority of people feel welcomed by the feeling of familiarity . Plus a young Clark Lois relationship could also mimic the whole mj peter thing from ps4 . Side missions like read dead or gta where you’re just going through the open world and you happen to be on the ground and a young Barry Allen runs you down and he asks how you survived him running into you . Just spittin ideas

Remember the neon speed power from Infamous Second Son? It let you run fast, run up walls etc. and if you upgraded the power it was basically infinite. I would love to see a flash game using a similar mechanic and control to that.... maybe also have a mode that slows down the world around you.
As far as Superman goes I think you can make it a challenge.... "intergang has been using high tech weapons that we think are coming from Apokolips" give your goons weapons that can mess with Superman.... sonic guns that stun him, power gauntlets that have a little kryptonite in them for enhanced punching, stuff like that. Then your bosses, Bizarro, Metallo, Parasite.... they are already threats to Superman.
Also work in some elements from the Hulk Ultimate Destruction. Let superman use the environment.... have him able to hit people with cars and tie them up with lamp posts that he bends.

To me, making it challenging sounds somewhat easy to do. You know how they say that "nice finish last" that can be the challenge in a superman game. While on earth you could worry about something akin to honor meter in RDR2. And maybe you could also visit Krypton where Superman may have to worry about an actual HP as well. While on earth make him care about HPs of others and the honor.

My favorite heros have always been Batman, Spiderman, and Wolverine. Superman stuff never grabbed me beyond bat family and justice league stuff. BUT I'd play the hell out of a Superman game.
My ideal game would have him learning his powers and basically becoming Superman. I think a super interesting game design opportunity for a character who rarely has the opportunity to die would be to just have the consequences of failed missions play out. You didn't save that building from collapsing? It's gone now. You didn't stop the jail break? There's criminals all over the city to deal with now. I think a reputation system could also be built off of this and make for a super interesting story. Sort of how Heavy Rain or Until Dawn handled character deaths, you just keep going even if some of your characters die. But it's probably too risky for a big budget Superman game.

Spitballing for a 'superman can't be killed' workaround, that also allows for a skill tree: make him invincible during the tutorial, with a similar structure to the fisk takedown in Spider-Man PS4. Have it be a Supes vs. Luthor mission, which ends with a kryptonite powered diabolis ex machina stripping him of his invulnerability, and all but his most basic powers (flight, speed, strength, and heat vision). Then come up with a plot device to gradually remove the kryptonite, unlocking more powers as the player progresses through the plot.
Even without this sort of plot device though, i honestly think that most players would be willing to suspend disbelief for the sake of gameplay. Spider-man and Batman also shouldn't really be able to lose to grunts like they do in their most popular games, but you dont see people complaining about that.
Hell, Lego Superman can already die in most of his appearances (albeit with a bit of effort) and no one complains about that!
