Very helpful information. I ALWAYS have issues with my slabs, You're an excellent teacher!! I never thought of the canvas texture being an invitation for cracks when bending my slabs. So good to know that I need to put those grains back together with a rib.

I don’t have a slab roller but really appreciate your video today. Will use this method AND pay attention to the scraps so they can be more easily reused. FYI- I never worry about tiny bubbles in my thin slabs either. I still try to fix them but don’t fixate! I use concrete boards so no canvas marks but sometimes roll on Tyvex to keep texture out of the surface. Thank you so much!

I don’t have a slab roller yet either but wanted to see what she did. Learned some as well. Doesn’t the clay stick to the tyvek? I work with pretty wet clay which literally sticks to everything but canvas.
Maybe dry your clay out a bit...? Wet clay IS sooo sticky... 😩

Thank you so much for the helpful video! Any chance you could do a video on the drying process? I’ve had cracks in my last few pieces and I’m having trouble identifying the cause.
Mmmm, well all i can say is don’t go too thin, dry slowly with even air flow - slatted shelves are great to help this... make sure you dont ever go from really thin to thick on anything - pay special attention to your rims... Its a good idea of yours - a vid on drying... 👍🏼

Stretching and folding like with yeast dough, or in chaos theory... the method works, mathematically proven, actually. Maths is fun, especially this branch (and maybe I'm weird, I'll grant you that).

So you didn’t wedge it at all? Interesting.
The bubbles in clay become a big issue if the clay is not FULLY DRY. The moisture that is in that air bubble will create steam and cause your piece to blow up. That is NOT to say you want bubbles.
I don’t enjoy wedging that much anymore so try and avoid it at all costs 🤣 I find that because the slabs are quite thin - 6.5mm - even if they are a tad damp when i put them in the kiln, the slow temperature ramp dries them out just fine on their way up 👍🏼
