Skilled writers use many different rhetorical devices in their works to achieve their purpose, that is to convey and persuade the audience. This is a technique used to evoke emotions of the audience of a point. There are many rhetorical features, but we will see the more effective one and the least effective one. Parallelism can be one of the more effective one because it draws the reader more deeply into what you’re saying and provides a nice sense of flow, even if you’re talking about complicated ideas. Anecdote is another effective rhetorical device that grabs the confidence of the audience or the reader telling stories that really had happen to you and grabbing their attention telling about something truth. Many people uses rhetorical questions in their speech and that’s a very powerful way to persuade people, but many times it can be considered a rude way to ask questions with no answer, they can interpret it as and offensive linguistic attack and that is the least thing you want to do in a speech so that’s one of them you should use often. In conclusion the eight rhetorical devices mentioned in this video are very useful to convey and persuade audience, however they should be used depending in what kind of speech you will give, focusing in the idea of your speech and not to talk about another topic during your speech.
In my opinion, an allusion is the most effective due to the oversaturation of possible references to make. Today's world is filled with so many pop culture references that basically any allusion is possible and able to drive home your idea. The least effective would be a rhetorical question because there is always that one guy who asks whether your question is rhetorical or not.
In my humble opinion, there are no better or worst rhetorical devices: the fact that it is pretty much impossible to come up with a standardized test to find which of the rhetorical devices is more effective is proof of that. I think it all depends on the author's grasp and experience with each of the rhetorical devices and their own skill.
I personally think that “repetition” is the most effective since this method consists on repeating something over and over until it enters to your mind. By the other hand, the less effective will be the “simile” because it will try to make you understand something by giving you examples of real situations, and this process is supposed to clarify your ideas, however it is possible that you don’t understand the examples either and therefore be more lost.
Well, in my opinion i think that the most effective rethorical device is “parallelism” because its repetitive quality helps us understand and memorize due to the fact that it uses a principal idea to catch the readers attention and makes it memorable. By the other side the least effective rethorical device would be “simile” because it requires a great balance of thoughts and imagination from the reader and if they can’t, then it would be hard to understand it and it will requiere a great level of understanding. Rethorical devices are often used to call the readers attention but in some cases there are readers that do not have enough understanding power which will cause confusion in the readers mind and requiere a great understanding power.
Thank you so much! I had an English assignment where I needed to write about rhetorical devices AND ethos pathos logos so I was perplexed cuz I thought they were the same
