im taking a character design class right now and i was kinda blank on ideas. the “you should be able to describe your character in one sentence” will be a good place for me to start! thank you for the reminder, its generating ideas already :)
@@SilvaShadow1990 I would say it should be an appropriate sentence. if it's a run-on sentence, you either need to rethink your character or rethink your sentence. for my project, my sentence was "robot lab assistant gains sentience and plans to release all of the tortured lab animals." it sets up a character (robot), the character's brief backstory/origin (being a lab tech), something that changed the character's life in order to put them on the path of their "quest" (gaining sentience aka gaining empathy) and establishes the character's goal/desire (releasing the tortured animals). This is for a project that requires some backstory, but if you're just drawing a throwaway one-time character then you probably don't need to think about it that deeply. i hope that answered it at least a little bit, sorry for the late reply :)
@@SilvaShadow1990 how big is the sentence depends on for what the characters is for, i think what he meant by that one sentence is like having a bunch of character side by side, and being able to say a visual clue that makes it stand out... I started drawing back in 2019, and have seen only little growth since I started. Allot of my passion and excitement faded and it depressed me, because I really liked art but I wasnt progressing and I couldnt produce things that I envision. As I watch more of these videos, I get some of that excitement back because I see a way forward. This time with some directions. I still cant help but feel anxious, because I am still only in my twenties, and life feels like its running ahead of me while I try to figure out what kind of like I want to lead for myself.
I first started drawing when i was fourteen and I did for like three months, and there was noticeable improvements. I am picking it up again coming up on a decade later because when I was *14* I thought it was too late for me to start drawing, especially knowing of my cousins who were both great at drawing at that same age. Biggest mistake of my life to stop.
"It's just something you have to do until you die... 1... 2..." I was worried for a second there, like you were counting to my death, but I didn't know how long I had.
Funny how the video tells me basically all the stuff I never realized I knew lol Been an artist for *years* and wanted to get back into an art kick (ADHD doesn't always allow me to indulge in my passions at will lol) so I found this video recommended to me and was surprised at how much I already have under my belt! Was well presented, good video and a great refresher on the things I should be actively working towards doing! (Y'know, rather than being on auto-pilot and hoping my hands do what they do correctly lol) I will say, though, that one shouldn't scoff at the power of directly tracing an image for practice. Sometimes, to get the finesse right, someone more experienced has to hold your hand the first time. It's how I learned to draw "on-model" for quite a good handful of characters from popular media. But the important part of it is also doing the practice away from the original art. And the beauty of tracing an image is that eventually your hands learn the motions of drawing lines over time. Once you trace an image, and you feel your hands may have the correct muscle memory to replicate that style of line you aim for, draw it independently and see how well that practice worked for you. I no longer "need" to trace things directly, but I have that private practice technique to thank for my steady hand and line confidence. But it's very important to know that that isn't your own original art at that point so of course don't claim it as such, just as mentioned at about 10:25 lmao
Right now I'm stucked and have no idea what to do or draw. I wanna draw and practice but I really felt lost. This video literally just saved me thank you so much!
Great video! can you do one about environment artists please? or like the difference between those two cause I'm struggling to decide which is best for me
I was trying to use the pack of your brushes, but something is off with them and I think my problems are: - The proper pixel size you use when you sketch and lineart (because somehow I can't get that clean crispy strokes you do while drawing in your videos) - The size of the canvas you use (guess also related to the size of the brushes you use since if your sketch brush is just 2 px, you can barely see anything if you are at 90% zoom on a 2000x2000 canvas for example). Mar sensei, tell me please which px size you use for your sketching and lineart brushes to get a better approximation to your strokes and see if in the end my problem is with the pen-pressure curves in my software or something.
Hi, I would like to be a concept artist. Your videos are amazing and thank you for that. my question is can I practice my gesture drawing or anatomy on paper or its more intuitive in digital?
yeah, I guess this is a sign. I love making up characters since I was a kid. been drawing my whole life in and out because I can't get a hold of any inspiration to pursue it. now I've been drawing more than I was in the pass 10 years. thank you for your videos, time to grind those exp, specially in color theory, coz that's the one thing i suck most in, in all of these.
I have a big problem I don't understand the proportions of the shoulder width well and I make the neck stiff I must continue drawing only proportions from the front Or should I start with the gesture no matter how disproportionate everything is?
I have a problem in my art journey. I have a working facility that is not comfortable. Small square plastic table with no chair. I only use a laptop and a simple screen less pen tab. I always get fatigued too fast, eyes burned, headache, back and knee pain, all of these suffer in under 5 minutes. It makes me sad because I can't focus, thus slow down my improvement. I really wanna know if someone have a same condition like I have and perhaps share me some tips to strive and keep move.
What do you mean specifically when you say Character art in the XP section of the video, is this like figure drawing like you do in term 1 nude figure drawing when talking about measuring proportions? Or is it something else entirly and i am just getting lost?
I’d disagree about tracing. It’s a chance to practice controlled line weights and smooth lines, focus on forms, and build muscle memory as long as the artist A) isn’t reposting and B) is copying more than just the lines on the page. Since the point of tracing, in this context, is to learn, then the goal is to utilize the image to build visual knowledge and muscle memory. I’ll admit, it isn’t the best way to practice any of these ideas, but it can be more fun than drawing line after line on page after page.
10:34 is tracing really pointless? I always assumed it would be at least decent for getting the feel of anatomy, poses and the like but maybe I’m wrong..
i really learn a lot with you, i practice in a smarter way XD. i need to do gesture drawing.. is someting i heard a lot but never put to much atention ... and now i know it's importart xD. it's time to level up ....

Ngl, the mace head ended up distracting me. It was hardly noticeable, but being slightly unaligned with the handle made it seem like it was either bending due to it's weight or a mistake. The way you did the shadow was pretty nice. I haven't considered making a dup of the whole figure and dragging it to form.

Everything cool until I saw Marc doing the shadow at the end of the video... suddenly eyes wide open! Tnx! 👍
Can you do this without speaking in riddles/analogy’s lol? Recipe and construction mean nothing to me in this context.
"Class is in session, pay attention" Am I the only one that says this outloud *EVERY TIME*? XD such a catchy phrase lol
U0:2 U literally scared me for a second in beginning when your jaws open.🤣🤣😂
What do you mean specifically when you say Character art in the XP section of the video, is this like figure drawing like you do in term 1 nude figure drawing when talking about measuring proportions? Or is it something else entirly and i am just getting lost?
Your video keep showing on my youtube page,so i subscribe it and i actually don't regret what i'm doing
ok but do I really need to know how to draw a realistic human figure in order to draw a character that looks like gosh dang mickey mouse!?
I’d disagree about tracing. It’s a chance to practice controlled line weights and smooth lines, focus on forms, and build muscle memory as long as the artist A) isn’t reposting and B) is copying more than just the lines on the page. Since the point of tracing, in this context, is to learn, then the goal is to utilize the image to build visual knowledge and muscle memory. I’ll admit, it isn’t the best way to practice any of these ideas, but it can be more fun than drawing line after line on page after page.
Can the hook be something you can not see, like “the lady that never uses underwear”, but she’s always “fully dressed”?
When Marc said “or bone definition” I thought he was gonna say a different word that um….well you know what I mean
1:11 got me xDD I love that your videos with being great 'n educational can make me smile or laugh^^
Hello I have been using your classes for learning how to draw people but I was wondering if I can use your art for reference. I don’t know how people feel about that so I thought I would ask
Learn folds characters wear clothes
R34 artist : Am I a joke to you?!
What godless person tried to steal from this class by leaving a dislike!? Shame on you.
Say Marc If I want to make a panoramic composition with a bunch of characters in it. That would be character design too?
