Fun Fact: Over the Hedge has been referenced in science. An aurora-like natural phenomenon was named STEVE in reference to the scene where the animals discover the hedge. STEVE is an acronym for Strong Thermal Emission Velocity Enhancement and radiates a purple and green light. So, without Over the Hedge, we wouldn't have an aurora named Steve. Thanks, Dreamworks!

I can’t express enough how good of a decision it was to have the camera almost always from the animals perspective, always facing up at humans. As a kid and even today it really makes you feel like one of them, experiencing the movie from their perspective
Yeah it's similar to Lady and the Tramp and how that film looks at things from the dog's perspective 🤔.

One of the many reasons I liked this as a child was how it portrayed humans. It being filmed from the viewpoint of the animals reminded me how I felt when adults were talking over me. It weirdly made me feel heard by mocking their self-importance. (I know kids were made fun of too, but the villains are adults).
ehhhhhh that's arguable, the villains were Karen (I forgot the name), Vincent and maybe the verminator.

What I love about Over the Hedge is that the movie setting perfectly depicted the mid 2000s culture. The mania of mcmansion subruba with white collar people buying a bunch of stuff they couldn't afford for it all to come crashing down a few years later in 2008.
Over The Hedge is known for its biting political commentary
Thanks Obama
It is certainly the best representative of 2000's animation I think. Just absurdly fun and chaotic, with a hints of deep meaning and insight.
Was gonna make this comment, you beat me to it. It just sums up 00s excess so well.
And to top it all off, a SmashMouth-esque soundtrack to really tie it all together.
I'm quite surprised you didn't mention how scary Vincent is. RJ was having post-traumatic nightmares of Vincent hunting him down and the voice actor really helped make him sound quite intimidating. On top of all that, he's a bear and who isn't afraid of bears right?

I think the problem with the "liar revealed" trend is purely the fact that it's been done sooooo many times, not just by dreamworks. Over The Hedge does it so right because the stakes are so high for RJ; he needs help to find enough food to feed a bear who literally threatens to KILL this helpless, lonely trash panda, so he lies to his new friends about helping them forage for food for the winter. There aren't many fictional pieces (that i've seen at least, so prove me wrong otherwise) that warrant the overuse of this plot point without the stakes being high enough to do it. Most of the time in modern animated films, it's done just to HAVE a twist with the main characters at all, which just signifies mediocre writing for the film at best. It honestly starts to feel fake, and that's why, no matter if it's good or bad, it's overdone, and overdone = bad apparently.
I'm not expressing distaste for the trope, but it's VERY noticeable how many times it's been done and at this point, there are alternatives.
This is a good comment and I agree with what you're saying. Unlike in other movies where the liar revealed trope is used,RJ's actual LIFE is on the line if he doesn't con these animals, which he over time grows to regret doing because he grows to like them. And to add on to the emotional gutpunch,Verne the character who was the most suspicious of RJ at the start, but grew to like him actually turned out to be correct with his first instinct. It also helps that the movie does a decent job of getting you to sympathize with both sides.
Verne's groups literally needs enough food to ride out the winter season so they don't starve and RJ needs the food so that the bear who's thumb's he's under doesn't kill him. In most movies with this trope it often does a poor job of this and often i wound up siding with the liar because I felt like the accusers were being unnecessarily harsh with the liar. Here, there are VALID reasons why the accusers are angry at RJ.
In all other movies the most the characters lose with the liar revealed trope is their peers respect.Which can work, but not in the way most kid movies do it and the result winds up being what is normally a pointless waste of time.
@@infinitedreamer9359 The ending where Verne points out they would have just given it to him if he had just pointed out the bear problem made things even more poignant, because it reveals how little RJ understood compassion and mutual aid because he never experienced those things. If they could gather enough food in a week or even a day, they obviously had more than enough at that point to pay off his debt, but he thought deception was necessary due to probably his only companion being a mafia boss bear and thus thinking backstabbing was the default. All that justifies the cast easily forgiving him at the end.
@@infinitedreamer9359 I like how much RJ seems to regret lying to them also. Not just after there's actual consequences that affect him personally, like in movies like Shark Tale, but all the way through the story. This helps the audience actually care about him, even more so than the fact that he's doing it for necessity rather than selfishness.
If you can’t do original, the. Just do standard well, their will be plenty of examples of it being both good and or bad.

FINALLY someone talks about the "Liar revealed" troupe, my absolutely most hated conflict trope
it's so unrealistically over-dramatic, like, every single one of these blow-outs I've seen in movies throughout my whole life could've been prevented if the offended party demanded their rightfully deserved explanation rather than storm away
heck, _I was in this situation in real life_ and it didn't play out like that
The liar revealed trope just got VERMINATED
The worst one being in the first kissing booth movie
Something that helps it is that Verne (the guy who's been most distrustful of RJ) is the one to convince them to trust RJ again. He seems like the kind of character who'd be most against him because he never trusted him, but he recognizes that RJ is trying to save them now. And as he smugly puts at the end of the film, if RJ had just told them he needed to steal a lot of food to stop a bear from eating him, they would've helped him out.
it isn't always bad it can be good if it's actually written well and doesn't have the characters abandon any and all logic for being overly emotional

One thing that I think is important about the "Liar revealed" storyline is the reason for the lie.
You mentioned the regret aspect but I think the reason is just as important.
The racoon here did it out of self preservation. Sure, he started it out of greed but he didnt take any more advantage of the lie than he had to.
He could have filled a second cart or something similar but he didn't. He only used them to save himself. Sure, he got himself into this mess because he couldnt hold back his greed at the start, but from the second he told the lie until the stories resolution he didnt take more advantage of the animals than he had to.
This makes him sympathetic, maybe not likeable, but at the very least I can understand the why.
Compare that to Shark Tale, where Wil Smith only told the lie, because he instantly got greedy. You might argue that he didn't choose the name at the beginning, but he got infatuated with the success so fast that I dont think there was a scene transition. We didnt get a moment where somone told him that they'd kill him, if he didnt take the name and made them rich, there was no self doubt. He could have shut down the entire thing at any time by just telling the truth but he didnt. This is why the trope doesnt work here. Not because the trope itself is bad, but because it made our main character unredeemably evil.
In conclusion. In over the hedge the trope works because there was a good reason to tell the lie and to keep it going. In Shark Tale it only existed to make our main character feel good and made him unlikeable.
This is very well reasoned and I agree with it, but how did you get that whole thing into a comment without the "Read more" prompt?
Another (Dreamworks) movie that does this well is the first How to Train Your Dragon.
(I'm not as articulate as Schaffrillas here, so bear with me)
Hiccup ends up in a lie when he begins using what he learns about dragons from spending time with Toothless in his dragon training lessons. He can't physically overpower a dragon (as shown in previous scenes), so when he finds ways to get around that (scaring off dragons with eels, mellowing them out with that grass, etc.) he uses those methods, and inadvertently becomes the star pupil. It's kind of a combination of self preservation, living up to the image of a Viking ("I just want to be like you guys"), and just switching over to a more effective way to deal with a large reptile that wants to kill you. And ultimately, the reason Hiccup lies about why he's suddenly so good at handling dragons is to keep Toothless safe, which is a much nobler reason for lying than just, "I'm an awesome s̶h̶a̶r̶k̶ ̶ dragon slayer!"
@@RoughlyArtistic wth you're right, maybe it's magic.
You're wrong. Will Smith fish only told the lie to intimidate the jellyfish hitmen and avoid getting killed by them, which was the reason he was taken to that wasteland in the first place. He wasn't thinking of becoming rich at that moment. It's not until the jellyfish start to spread the word to the media that Smith has no option than start lying to everyone as well.
The thing about Will Smith fish is that he is a dumbass. The movie makes it clear that he has no idea of what the hell he's doing, just making irrational decisions without thinking of the possible outcomes ( asking for money to a loan shark with mob connections, betting those 5000 on a rigged race despite the chances of getting killed if the horse loses, lying about killing a shark when there is an entire mafia made of sharks living nearby, etc )
With the recent news of Bruce Willis, and the fact that this movie never got a sequel, makes it an even more treasured childhood memory/film

In a small defense of Bug's life: the problem with the bird plan wasn't that it was a "liar's plan", it was that it came out it was Flick's (the main ant) plan. And Flick was considered the mad inventor whose inventions never worked, so everyone assumed that this plan, just like all the ones before it, would fail.
You can still claim it's a stupid reason for not using the bird, but it's less stupid than not using it because the guy who came up with it was a liar.
@Gaming_Master - I believe I said that. just, not AS stupid as the "it's a liar's plan" reason given in the video.
@@NeroCM It is true!!! But everyone was so optimistic that the bird was gonna work that they went as far as building it. Because of that, the fact that it was Flik’s and he lied to them about it shouldn’t have mattered anymore at this point. I love A Bugs Life (it’s actually my second favorite Pixar movie). But that scene in the movie always bothered me
Also, when Flick's lie is revealed, the ants could've assumed that Flick was unaware that the 'warriors' were ex-circus bugs and lied on accident (in context, Flick did find out that they weren't warriors after they tried to back out of protecting the ants, but he decided to keep it a secret in fear of retribution). Flick isn't exactly the sharpest tool in the shed, so it could've been assumed that his lie was yet another slip-up.
@@EdnaKonrad4MVS Still. They shouldn’t have abandoned their plan of using the fake bird. It was kinda their only option at that point. Hopper will be arriving at any time now, there’s not enough time to collect more food. So the ants really got nothing left to loose at that point.
@@superjackster0165 I mean it was a wild plan though. spot on. megamind is amazing, shrek 2 is the best, spider-man 3 is hilarious, and madagascar 2 is the best one
Totally. Same happened to me.
Finally someone actually appreciates how funny this guy makes his videos 💙
My expectations for Incredibles 2 (before it hit theatres (well, with early screenings): It could be epic, if not strong as The Incredibles.
How well Incredibles 2 really sways with me: Yeah, this is the quality of Pixar’s late 2010s films like The Good Dinosaur, Incredibles 2 and Toy Story 4.
My expectations for Spider-Man 3 before it hit theatres: Raimi is back, baby!
How Spider-Man 3 really is: More like its predecessors than people think: campy old-school superhero flicks, but that’s their charm that makes it another one of those Spider-Man films that The Amazing Spider-Man 2 couldn’t beat, not even in its dreams, like the shockingly amazing Into the Spider-verse (it’s a better Sony Animation film than all the ones made in 2017, don’t @ me) and the Spider-Man duology with future milf (XD) Zendaya Coleman as Mary Jane Watson and Tom Holland as Peter Parker!

Schaffrillas: Humour is not based on misery towards others.
Doug Walker: That's not true! That's impossible!
The best humor is think about it how many actual good jokes. Require No missure there’s a few kinds but not a lot like subverting expectations And actually that’s about all
Is this comment based on the controversy in 2018?
Yes that is a gross misunderstanding of what humor is. NC says all humour is misery towards others. John Cleese once said that all humor is critical, and while criticism has the potential to cause misery (to the one being criticised); It doesn't have to.
It's funny to see Jerry beat up Tom because Tom is much bigger than him, *and trying to eat him.* It's classic David and Goliath. Same deal with Bugs Bunny and Elmer Fudd, Wile E Coyote and the Road Runner. Daffy plays both hero and villain depending on who he is up against, but the point is that the violence those characters inflict on each other is levying the same criticism; don't beat on those smaller than you. In those cases we only laugh at the misery of others if we feel they deserve it and misery is far from the only thing we laugh at.
@@Fangs1978 And even the idea that all humor is critical is a bit too broad. Monty Python had a lot of clever moments of critique, but there were also a lot of jokes that came from just simple absurdity, exaggeration, and the surprise of seeing something strange happen.
Isn't that the Nostalgia Critic?
There are so many moments in this movie that just took me out cold when I was a kid - the flying wagon, the car chase, "IT NEVER ENDS THERE TOO", the possum's monologue as he fakes his death on the road... And while there are many movie moments that I found insanely hilarious as a kid that I now look back on with a "yeah that wasn't actually very funny" kind of attitude, looking back on this movie I think it would actually hold up pretty well if I watched it today. Also, as far as I recall, it does manage to be pretty genuinely touching, and it combines genuine emotion with comedy in a great way (the romance between Stella the skunk and the house cat is one of the best I've ever seen and I WILL die on that hill)
Yeah pretty much

Sometimes you just see stuff like this and you simply wonder "how?"

Agreed, on the basis of novelty as a concept (in the realm of film) and because I actually rather enjoyed the art style of the film. It was realistically gritty, the characters were exaggerated in their features just enough to avoid Uncanny Valley and the horror scenes actually has an atmosphere of threat to them.
Over the hedge is probably one of my most memerable non-pixar, non-shrek movie from my childhood. Watching this was actually really enjoyable and I found it funny personally. For a dreamworks movie it is one of their better movies by far!
