This is the on,y instrument I've seen where it seems an absolute miracle that those sounds can be produced by human hands.

Elated to see such a clear explanation of the technical challenges harpists encounter. The late Gail Barber was my best friend, and I used to watch her marking the pedal changes and changing music composed as if the harp were a piano to something that can actually be played on the harp. This brought back such wonderful memories and was presented in a truly helpful way. Thank you for bringing tears to my eyes.

I came across this video via the double bass tuition....and I just thought I'd have a listen. But man....I couldn't look away. A lovely way you have about you Karen, and not patronising at all. And the hours that must have gone into that...I am so impressed. And practice? Ain't like you can lug it about. Very glad I stopped by.

Brilliant video. I never, in a million years, had any idea that a harp had pedals. I'm in a bluegrass band, but adore classical as well. You can well imagine, harps aren't too often used in bluegrass. ;-)

you now how theres those instruments that are like, "oh that looks really easy, ill play it well" and then you try it and are like "WTF!"...yeah well the harp isnt even like that. I mean the instrument LOOKS so damn hard in the first place, i simply couldnt imagine playing it at that level. But i think its one of those instruments that takes an insane amount of work and practice and it pays off by an absolutely splendid sound. Much respect

  • @funkacelloik

@Vaylemn No musician starts out needed the most expensive instruments. It's an investment over time. I'm a cellist, and when I first started 16 years ago I rented instruments. Then I paid payments toward a student level cello, and traded that for a higher quality one and the same for my professional quality one now. There is no sure way of knowing you are serious about music for the long hall at the beginning. (But yes, piano's are very expensive but you wouldn't start with a grand piano.)

due to price, beginners usually Rent a harp, and a more affordable harp to rent, to really start with, would be a lever harp. and you go by there~

The lady has a dry wit, but in that piece it is a likely schedule, but remember the 61 lever changes in the last bit, so when you are playing, you had better be at the top of your game.
