Val, most of the time when the hook does not rotate it's because of a broken top gear on the vertical shaft in the upright of the machine. That gear turns the shaft to the pulley on the bottom which turns the timing belt which turns the hook. The gear is internationally known to be of a type of plastic that stiffens and crumbles over the years, some people believe because of heat transfer from the top bushing just below the gear. This problem affects a handful of models that use this gear. I had so many emails about this that I finally made a video showing how to replace the gear for about $10.00 Maybe you could watch some of it and see if you think that's the problem on your machine. Good Luck, and thanks for watching Andy Tube. Link to gear change video: ruclips.net/video/M3bFtlV1Y6s/видео.html
Tengo una maquina cantante 457 que me acaban de regalar y no la entiendo es lenta se tranca el hilo y la bovina no la entiendo, ceras que me pueden ayudar por favor
I'm looking at buying a 457, and I have to say this is the information video on any sewing machine that I have ever watched. Thank you very much for the time and effort you put in the details of the machine
Hi, Terri. It's a nice model with one weak spot. The top gear on the vertical shaft falls apart sooner than later. The new gear is about $10 and I have a step-by-step video for replacing it. ruclips.net/video/M3bFtlV1Y6s/видео.html I've bought a number of these at a low price because the gear was broken and the hook does not turn. Thanks for the nice comment and for watching my channel.
I just want to say thank you. My Nan left this exact type of machine for me after she died. I never got to take lessons from her before she passed and so this is so incredibly helpful to me. My machine is in absolutely perfect condition and she had it serviced every year. It’s in a lovely case too.
Happy for you, Emily. It's a real treasure and with cleaning and oiling, you should plan on leaving it to your grandchild in the future! I made other videos about it, like bobbin winding, threading the needle, etc. and some maintenance videos. You can find them all in this playlist: ruclips.net/p/PLsCOZgzzaiKK9GeuGLCo6ZyWv-HbheRVK If the instruction manual did not get to you it is available for free download from SInger at this link: www.singer.com/search/support?title=457 Thanks for taking the time to comment and take care.
Thank you so much. I inherited my grandmother's Singer. She taught me to sew when I was little, but I had forgotten what all the settings were and how to use them.
I cant believe am watching this video after 6yrs since it was posted . I got a singer machine yesterday at a thrift shop. Was carrying it in the street with its top cover and you cant imagine the attention i got from people. It looks like 1950s which i loved 😂. I got it to learn how to sew ,thankyou so much for this video ,it has helped me understand its features and their functions although your one isnt exactly as the one i got but they almost pretty much similar.
So happy for your Julie and I appreciate the nice comment. If you could tell me the model number on your machine I may be able to give you even more information. Otherwise happy sewing!
Hello! Its a grand slam! My 457 is sewing all its stitches! Beautifully. And I have to thank you from the bottom of my heart. The whole story of this success is do to well, mainly you. But also Terry , of TandTrepair who gave me instructions to set the feed dog know in the 400 series Service manual as T. To get to the reason for this 147 hour journey ( thats how long I spent on to finally get the 457 running, as good as ever) I knew it should work. And you proved I was not wasting my time, or anyone elses! So dear sweet teacher of us that learn,,, all the prayers of Jabez. Bless a keep, bind tightly ( think kindly of) those you love . And thank you, and yours!
So happy for you, Sharell! Terry Fielding is a wonderful guy and an incredible technician. I'm grateful for the times he helped me, too. What a journey you've had and congratulations to you for all you have learned on it. I've always believed the first step of any journey is Faith, and the second step is Determination. After those two it gets easier. Your kind and sincere comment made my day today. Thank you.
@@andytubesewing1953 what a mix up i right now had. My key board was changed and my daughter was helping to explain what had been done to cause it and ...poof! All is wacky. I now have the machine installed in a cabinet I bought at a thirst store, but it had a old singer, 9ne of the black ones in it. I took it out and my 457 fit right in. Hooray. Noe what to do with the poor goopy rusty singer, itching its a 15- 91. I look into it but I don't think its a working thing. Its seems to only be missing its sliding bobbin plate but, who knows. Thank you for posting! Great information, I have alot to learn. Can you believe I found this machine with the carry-on case in working condition by the trash. Still works 😁
Lucky you! Sometimes people toss them when the top gear on the vertical shaft breaks down. I well-known problem that can be fixed. I hope yours is fine. Wow, thank you for doing this! I got one of these for free (it didn't work), got it reconditioned, and I'm learning to use it. These videos are invaluable!
It's a very capable, strong working model and very portable. Congratulations on your good luck. The Instruction Manual is full of good information for using it and if you need a copy it is still free to download from Singer at this link: www.singer.com/search/support?title=457 You'll love sewing with this machine and thanks for watching my channel.
My sister is gifting me this exact model. I am so grateful for your videos because we don't know if it is in working condition as she acquired it from someone else. I have downloaded the manual. Some people say this isn't a good model and not worth repairing because of the plastic gear. But you address this in another video.
Congrats! This model has a bad rep b/c of that gear, but the gear is like 50 years old. Yes, you can replace the gear. If is not broken now it will be soon so even if it works when you get it viewers tell me all the time as soon as they really started using it, or the first time they reversed sewed, the gear went out. With a new gear, you have a good versatile machine for home use, clothing, curtains, slipcovers, tablecloths, should be able to hem jeans, etc. Good Luck.
I got this machine in about 1968. Back when they taught girls Home Economics, Sewing and Cooking. Cranked out my old machine to make face mask for the COVID-19 pandemic. Thanks for the tour I haven't sewed in years, this is a good machine. Still works. Thanks again for the Great tour. 🙂

@@andytubesewing1953 Thank you. I went over everything and couldn't get the needle to pick up the thread. The bobbin holder is not turning. Someone on You tube said it was probably a belt on the bottom of the machine. Do you think that is right? And where could I get one? I hope you don't mind if I'm asking.
@@lindabailey7679 The bobbin holder is centered in the Hook. The hook rotates around the bobbin holder (case) to catch the needle thread. There is a belt and two pulleys on the bottom of the machine called the Timing Belt. Those make the hook rotate. The drive Pulley on the right is powered by a vertical shaft going up to the main horizontal arm shaft. There is a gear on the top of the vertical shaft. It is made of plastic. It has failed. A very common problem; very. With a broken gear nothing going down to the timing belt and hook is moving. I made a video showing how to replace that gear. The new gear costs about $10. The video has about 35K views which shows how common the problem is for this model and others of that decade. Here is the video: ruclips.net/video/M3bFtlV1Y6s/видео.html I don't mind you asking, Linda. I made my channel and 500+ videos to help people like save their sewing machine, and I hope you save yours. Best of luck.
I am the original owner of a 457 and I wanted to replace the motor belt. I bought a new belt from a company and it seemed to be the wrong size, too small. It strained the machine horribly. I then ordered from a different company, thinking the first company sent me the wrong part. Both are numbered 196386. The second belt also seems not to fit, as it is the same size as the first. So, I put the old belt back on, using your videos. I believe I adjusted the belts as you instructed; there's no slack in these new belts at all. Thank you so much for your videos. I had not sewn with my machine for about 30 years, and then suddenly I had a large sewing project to do (15 bicycle vests for our cycling club). After the 15 vest, the top gear broke, and with the help of your videos I replaced the gear. Anyway, the old belt works fine, I just thought after nearly 50 years, my machine could use a new belt. To even get the new belts on, I loosened the motor mount to its loosest position, and had to have my husband put the hand wheel back on with the new belt. It was way tight, and no amount of fiddling would give me any slack near 1/2 inch. I hope you can give me some advice.
I have had this same problem. I think many sellers are buying the same belt from China, and it is a very tight fit. I have tried ordering the next size up belt, and it is too loose. I usually manage to get the belt on and DO NOT run the motor. I let it sit and it slowly stretches. I adjust it a tiny, tiny bit every 12 hours and after a few days, I feel there is enough slack to run the motor without hurting it or bending the motor shaft. What a complete hassle. I wish a new a better way to stretch the belt a little bit. I left one out in the Arizona sun for a few hours and then tried pulling it by hand thinking I could stretch it 1/4 inch. Of course, it broke! I only work on belted machines when someone pays me to do it. I usually just restore the direct drive steel geared machines that don't use a belt.
Thanks so much for the prompt reply. So these new belts don't really fit! I will keep my old belt on; it does work. With the help of your videos and suggestions, I learned how to take off the face plate to access the top gear, I have removed the cam stack for easy cleaning and greasing of the worm gear, adjusted the stitch width device, and taken out the needle bar and presser bar and cleaned and put both back in. I've only used alcohol and Q-tips for cleaning; gets things clean enough for me right now. Your videos are so helpful and encouraging. Decades ago, the only thing I did was oil according to the sewing manual, and now that I look at it, I think I over oiled; this time when I oiled I wiped away excess oil. I will keep watching, as your videos are so well done and understandable for people who have never done anything beyond oiling. I am going to get back to sewing for a bit; I only need straight stitching, back stitching and zigzag, so the 457, as long as it lasts, works for me.
Your 457 is a very well-made machine and it's great for clothing and light-to-medium crafting. I am really happy you could use the videos to get it cleaned up and sewing. Alcohol is fine and once you clean it the way you did it is easy to maintain. Wiping up after you apply oil will avoid problems and only takes a minute. Thank you for your comments and for watching Andy Tube.
This is amazing. I bought a 457 mounted in a beautiful 60s mod table at a thrift shop for $29. I snapped it up even though I don't know how to sew. Thank God for your channel!!! I love my beauty . She works great! Even though I only know how to make curtains! I'm going to watch all your 457 videos multiple times! Thank you so much for posting these so I know how to keep my machine in great working condition for many more years.
WOW! $29 is an incredible price for a 457 with a good cabinet. I paid more than that for the parts to repair the one in the video. It is a great little mchine and I think you will be sewing more than just curtains before long. It is easy to care for too. Just keep lint & dust off and oil it when needed. If you need the instruction manual it is available here for free: www.singerco.com/support/instruction-manuals Thank yoou for subscribig and leavig such a nice comment.
Thanks Andy! I'm working on a 457 now. Actually putting it back together. Wanted to come here and check out your videos on this one to see if I missed anything.
I can relate, David. It's been long enough since I worked on some models that when I get inquiries about them I got back to my old tour videos to refresh my mind about the workings of it. Thanks for commenting.
I'm glad you found my channel, Sue. Welcome to Andy Tube. If you'd like an electronic copy of the Instruction Manual you can download it for free from Singer at this link: www.singer.com/search/support?title=457 Model 457 is a strong, versatile model, but I want to make you aware of a known weak spot. It has a plastic gear on the top of the verticle shaft and with its age now it is prone to chipping, cracking and crumbling. Then the hook will not rotate. No sewing. This is a problem with a few models of that decade so I made a video about replacing the gear, which costs about $10. If you have time you may want to glance through the video and see the location of the gear so you can look into the top of your machine and check its condition. Here is the video: ruclips.net/video/M3bFtlV1Y6s/видео.html I feel if you have the original gear and it is not broken yet it soon will be. During this virus "stay at home" period I have dozens of emails about the gear. {people get out an old family machine and soon after they start sewing masks the gear gives out. Thank you! Appreciate this video as I purchased a Stylist 457 on 5-16-70. Receipt still in the manual. :-) Sure wish the Internet and folks, like yourself, had been on a "You-Tube" back then. Sure woulda saved a lot of hair-pulling frustration, that's for sure. FWIW, my 457 stayed neglected in it's desk style cabinet for a number of years. Recently decided to bring it out of retirement. Oiled it up and it moves freely. Sadly, the "Singer Lubricant" that I applied, according to Singer instructions, looks like the brown globs in your first 457 video. That said, I'm thankful that YT search turned up your channel. Now, I have guidance that was sorely needed many years ago. Much appreciated. Subscribed.
Thank you so much! I wonder what was in that original Singer Lubricant, haha. I'm glad you plan to put your 457 back to use; it is a very capable machine, as you know. Would you care to share how much it cost when it was new? People have asked me what some of these cost originally, and I really have not found a source for that. Take care, and thanks again Lee.
Andy Tube Andy, sadly my receipt is for both the cabinet (#678) and head (#457) combo. Total was 183.95 for the pair. This cabinet appeared to be a desk with 2 drawers on the left side, when not setup for sewing. A panel in the top was removed and the head lifted on "hidden" hinge pins. Maple finish, with turned legs. Relatively expensive cabinet for the time, but don't know how much of the $183 was cabinet. ?? Hope this helps, a bit.
Yes, thank you. It's more info than I had before. When I look here: www.saving.org/inflation/inflation.php?amount=184&year=1970 it says that is over $1100 in 2016 dollars! Imaging that. If I had that much to spend today, wonder what kind of machine I could buy? Here is an article from 2012 with some machines in that range: freshlypieced.com/2012/07/sewing-machine-shopping-what-i-learned.html Man, are they "advanced" or what?
Your video been so helpful thanks just bought this sewing machine in a thrift store for 10.00. And you help me how to used specially how to oil. Going to see all your videos thank you. Keep ur good work
Welcome. What a good purchase for only $10. Congratulations! You will enjoy cleaning it up and getting it running for use. It;s a very nice machine for you. Please stop by Anndy Tube anytime. Thank you for making time to comment and good luck.
Sure. I don't know how far along you are so I'll start from the beginning. Turn power and light off or unplug from the wall outlet. Pull down on the metal safety cover for the light bulb on the left side and hold it down. Use your thumb & index finger to pinch the bulb. Wet your fingers first or hold a rubber band against the bulb for gripping. The bulb is bayonet-style and not a screw-in style. Push the bulb up into the socket a short way while turning the bulb towards the back of the machine, then pull out the bulb. There are two small pins on the sides of the metal base of the bulb that fit into two narrow slots in the plastic base of the socket. You are lining the pins to the slots for removal. To install your new bulb gently push up into the socket while turning the bulb toward the front of the machine (towards you) and you'll feel the pins slide into those slots. Now push a tiny bit more and turn a tiny bit more towards you to lock the pins into the slots. (bayonet style). This info is on page 65 of the Instruction Manual for Singer Model 478 and is very common to most Singer machines. You can download a free PDF copy of the manual directly from the Singer website at this link: www.singer.com/search/support?title=478 Thanks for watching my channel, Janet, and good luck.

Thanks again! I have replaced some parts and it is just about to work as it should, but now my needle keeps breaking on the "bob-wheel". I have ajusted the position but it seems like it keeps moving. Maybe something wrong with the "rubber-band" that connects the wheels at the bottom of the machinery. I will search through your links and hope to get this going! Or I will reconnect with you, if that is ok 😁
@@Hemlighetsmakeri If your needle is striking the rotary hook that is a good sign the timing is off. In the gear video I mentioned above I show how to timing the hook to the needle stating at 01:15:00 in the video. You can reset the timing 20 times, but if that top gear is failing and slipping then the machine will go out of time in about 30 seconds. I know you are joking when you call the Timing Belt the "rubber-band" (right? joking?) Good Luck.
English is not my first language so I didn't know how to name the "timing belt", and I also know nothing about sewing machines or the names of the different parts.
@@Hemlighetsmakeri You sound hurt which was not my intention. I have viewers who have used rubber motor belts in place of timing and that won't work. That is why I mentioned your use of rubber-band. Hi Andy... Really appreciate your Videos as I collect Sewing machines here in Ireland and have over 50 in my collection .Have acquired a Singer 457 and replaced the upper Bushing ...have watched your video about adjusting the needle bar however When I have done the adjustment the needle is hitting the needle plate when the lever is moved to the left position ( L. Hey Andy, I was able to replace that vertical gear that goes bad on these machines. Yay me…of course it was from following your video on that. As I was trying to complete the work on this model, it felt like maybe the motor was a little sluggish. I’ve been looking all around tonight for a video on how to get in there and clean that up a little bit. Do you recall any videos you may have made covering that. It’s unlike the 400 and 500 motors but I could not find one single video on it. Thanks.

I'll start by letting you know you can buy and download the original Service Manual for $6.99 here: manualsoncd.com/product/singer-400-series-service-and-repair-sewing-machine-manual/ It is always a good idea to give the machine a complete lubrication before making any adjustments or repairs b/c that may fix the problem. how do I get to the under belly. My screws are not budging. should be able to tlit it back and get to underneath. Instruction book says to remove retaining nut. I am unable to figure out how to do that. Does your model 457 connect like that from the back? I would love to be able to get to the backside/bottom of machine. HELP!
If your machine is in a plastic case bottom, there are 2 long screws and a thumb nut/washer holding the case bottom to the machine. Hi. Could you please advise. My machine will pick up thread first time but then will not make a stitch. Any advice would be welcome. Thank you in advance.
Hi, Josie. The most common reason for this is incorrect threading, so we always start by removing the thread back to the spool pin and rethreading. Also, verify the bobbin is inserted into the bobbin case/holder with the thread coming off in a counterclockwise direction. If you need a manual Singer still has it for free download at this link: www.singer.com/search/support?title=457 My playlist of videos for model 457 also has videos for threading the needle and winding the bobbin: ruclips.net/p/PLsCOZgzzaiKK9GeuGLCo6ZyWv-HbheRVK Start with those and see if it corrects the problem. Good Luck.
You are such a gift to us Andy! I am looking into picking one of these up and came here first, and voilá, here you are just in time! Not sure about that top gear, would the cause of that problem come with heavy use, age, or both? Sure thinking about you lots and praying for you. Hope you stay cool, things are heating up in Winslow but not like down there…. Take care..healing thoughts….Jonee. (I get crap for having 34 machines, then they tell me I need one more for 35. Go figure! 😂)
P.S. I just visited the site you linked to above, about the gear. The answer to my question was right at the top, can be sewing too heavy/thick of material and/or age. (Just in case anyone else wondered, and to save you from having to answer it, dear Andy..)
Thanks for the kind words. 🙏 IMO the top gear fails b/c oil/grease is put on top of it instead of oiling the bushing below it. That type of load bearing bushing gets hot anyway but even more so when the bushing lacks oil. Excessive heat and break-down of caused by oil (hydrocarbon based) on the plastic (hydrocarbon based) gear causes it to discolor and weaken then finally chipping off teeth and even cracking into parts. No oil/grease on plastic gears as told to me by Singer guys. There are modern synthetic oils/greases not that some feel the need to use on gears, but I still do not put anything on gears. This model, and a dozen other, left out an oil port for the top bushing that they normally used on previous and later models, only showing (poorly, IMO) in the instruction manual to put oil on the bushing from the top. I believe most people mistook those instructions for putting oil right onto the plastic gear. Yes, a few degrees above normal at 114 today, but we've had 122 before and still live to talk about it, so meh... Take care of yourself and good luck with #35.
@@andytubesewing1953 Thanks as always for your valuable insight, and the thoroughness you use to explain it. That has to be the best deal of 2017! Congratulations you guys. Here are a couple of videos about removing rust and polishing small parts. You can buy the service manual. It has instructions for converting the machine to (or from) treadle, but you need parts. You must remove the motor, you must change to a special treadle handwheel (part number unknown), you must install an Idler Pulley for the Treadle Belt inside the machine, and you must replace (or leave totally off) the bedplate cover (oil drip pan on the bottom of machine) b/c the treadle belt will come out the bottom of the machine. There are parts manuals also. This seller has the service and parts manuals for download. Use coupon code andy-h-yt for 20% off. Hi Andy, I just found a Singer 437 standing outside. I took it in to see if it still works and it mostly does. electricity works and the machine moves mostly smooth. however, when you put the bobbin thread and the top thread in and try to sew with it, it gets terrible stuck right away. i am not quite sure what the problem ist. i took the bobbin pin out and the capsule too, cleaned a little, but it wasnt too dirty anyways. it still gets terribly stuck and makes not a single stich. i have tried to make a video of what happens, maybe you would have a look at it for me? and maybe you have a suggestion as to what i could try. i think it would be a real shame to throw the machine away as it works fine otherwise.
Hi, Yvonne. Thanks for trying to save this machine. Model 437 was not sold in the USA when it was made. I have no parts or repair documents for it, sorry. I did find the instruction manual here: www.singer.com/sites/default/files/product_manual/SINGER%20437%20Sewing%20Machine.pdf It does look like a free-arm 457 model, or at least in that family. There are a few things that could cause the machine to "get terribly stuck" right away and more info is needed, but here is a video about thread clearance. If the bobbin cushioning spring is out of adjustment then the thread hangs up there and the machine can "stick" or "freeze" from that. Here is a video about that on a model 404 to give you an idea of what I mean: ruclips.net/video/OXKqZp87eN4/видео.html You could also go here and buy a service guide for model 457 for $7 and see if that would help. It has many instructions for removal, replacement, and adjustment of parts. manualsoncd.com/product/singer-400-series-service-and-repair-sewing-machine-manual/
hi thanks for your quick reply. i am based in germany, maybe that explains how i found the 437 :) when i found it it there were some threads hanging out from underneath the needle plate, it was difficult to remove them. i pushed open the needle plate and tried to carefully get the threads out, but they were stuck to the degree i had to remove the bobbin cushioning spring. but i put that one back in (correctly i believe at least looks the same as before to me, but i have never tried to repair a sewing machine. i will upload my video on my channel and maybe you can see it there. will try to make a better one tomorrow. i mean if you are interested.
my video is online, it is short am and i turn the hand wheel on the side that is why it is so slow. i should try to make a better video tomorrow probably. i will go and look at your video again now.
I watched your video. The needle thread gets stuck after it is cast0off the hook. It looks like there is no gap between the bobbin case and the bobbin case spring. watch the video I referred you to and use a feeler gauge to set the gap.
Hi Andy - hope you had a good Christmas and Happy New Year! I've been having a few problems with the bobbin tension on my machine and wondered if you might be able to help? A few weeks back I was having tension problems - the needle thread was breaking and the bobbin thread seemed loose. I managed to get the needle tension right but I just can't seem to get the bobbin tension right, which was loose and now is very loose! I've been testing with different coloured threads and the bottom threads are quite visible i fact if you crank the wheel by hand you can see the bobbin thread pulling through. I don't seem able to tighten the tension on the bobbin case any more. Is it possible that I've over done it and damaged the spring on the bobbin case? I've taken the bobbin case out and cleaned it but I've still got problems. Should I buy a replacement bobbin case? No immediate rush as I have a spare machine. Best wishes and thanks for all the videos.
Congratulations on getting the needle tension "right"; that's not always easy. Sure it is possible you damaged the parts on the bobbin case. I don't have it in my hand so I can't say if that is the problem. Here are some things I have found on the class 66 bobbin cases though. You said you cleaned the case which is a good idea. Here is how I clean a bobbin case; ruclips.net/video/HT5XZ5eYYEQ/видео.html I have often found lint & dirt packed between the tension spring and the side of the case that prevents the spring from putting tension on the bobbin thread. You can tighten the adjustment screw until you're blue in the face (or you damage the spring/screws) and still not achieve normal tension. Speaking of the spring and screws, yes, I have seen bent springs from people adjusting them and I have seen damaged screws that just won't quite tighten down properly. Sometimes you can work the spring back into a nearly perfect curve to repair it but sometimes you just have to replace it. If the screw seems damaged it is usually a thread/threads of the screw which seems to be a softer metal than the hardened steel of the bobbin case. Springs and screws used to be plentiful but are getting hard to find. The spring on your bobbin case is part #172202 and I found one seller who shows it in stock; www.singeronline.com/bocatesp11.html There may be many more and I'm not sure you are even in the USA for that matter. The spring mounting screw is part #1172; www.sewingpartsonline.com/bobbin-case-tension-screw-singer-1172.aspx The tension adjustment screw is part #1173; www.sewingpartsonline.com/bobbin-case-tension-screw-singer-1173.aspx and there may be other sellers but with the part numbers you can search around. Should you buy a replacement bobbin case? Part #172082-001 can certainly be found on eBay and other online stores. You may (rarely) find a new one for $60 or used ones for $10 - $15. I have found it rare to have to replace a Class 66 bobbin case though. I have found that the hook and bobbin case on the machine develops a "wear pattern" after years and maybe millions of rotations. When you buy a used case it has its own wear pattern that you can bet will be different than the one on your hook. So the used case will work but may be quite noisy. That can be corrected using valve grinding paste and lots of time and patience. I've done it a couple of times and try to avoid it if at all possible. I have been told by a couple of viewers that they bought a new Apollo Bobbin case and it worked "OK". It is made of plastic and has a low price so when it wears out it is easy to replace. I have never tried this myself but here is one for you to see what I'm talking about; www.sewingpartsonline.com/bobbin-case-apollo-singer-421326.aspx? Personally, I bought an extra working bobbin case for all of my wife's sewing machines, along with an extra used motor. Some things just aren't being made any longer. Yes, happy new year Fiona, and thanks for watching my channel.
Hi Andy, inherited the 457 from family members Threaded the machine but cannot get the bobbin to upload to sew. Feeling frustrated as would love to sew with it.Have tried everything but no such luck, will not bring bobbin thread up.Help Thank you
If you are lucky it is just a timing issue that can be reset in 15 minutes, but it is common for the machine to have a worn-out, broken gear on top of the vertical shaft. That shaft powers down to the timing belt that runs the hook. The plastic gear breaks apart from age and the Hook will not rotate to pick up the needle thread and drag it around the bobbin thread so you can pull it up. The gear is only about $10 or less and I have a video about replacing it. Here is the Playlist for model 457 with videos about working on it including the gear. ruclips.net/p/PLsCOZgzzaiKK9GeuGLCo6ZyWv-HbheRVK You can just slide open the bobbin cover and watch the hook that holds the bobbin while you turn the handwheel towards you. If you don't see the hook going around in a counterclockwise circle you have a bad gear.
@@andytubesewing1953 Thank you for your quick response.Checked what you said about watching the bobbin and know it's broke as I see nothing moving.Needle goes up and down but nothing with the bobbin. Looks like the machine is wore out.
@@rozeichelberger3400 not the whole machine just that top gear on the vertical shaft needs replaced it's actually a wonderful model and it's a shame singer use a plastic gear there however the gears do last 30 years or more so it's used worth replacing it for 10 bucks if you want it to work again I did so many of these because I'd find them really cheap because they didn't work replace the gear and was selling them for $150 to $200
I have been watching your videos and they are very informative. I have just acquired 2 vintage machines - Singer Stylist 416 and Eaton Viking EZ-65. I have downloaded the Instruction Manual for the 416 but still need the Service Manual. I can't find anything (not even a pic) on the EZ-65. The Singer 457 looks very similar to EZ-65 (has a lock knob stitch selector). I want to clean and oil these machines so any help would be greatly appreciated.
You can buy the Singer Service Manual here: manualsoncd.com/product/singer-416-418-sewing-machine-service-manual/ My playlist of videos for Singer Model 413 may help also. ruclips.net/p/PLsCOZgzzaiKKVlkxPT9FMTdvUUGj8Ydf8 I don't know anything about Eaton or Viking machines so have never researched for documents. Good luck.
Some leathers, certainly. Think garment leathers, using a Catagory 2032 (Leather) Needle. I like to use an Ever Feed/ Walking Foot Attachment too. Get an idea by watching this 11-second slide I made of the manual showing needle to thread to fabric chart (just pause the video) ruclips.net/video/AAwgHaa_bIM/видео.html It's a domestic (home) sewing machine not industrial, so it really is not capable of cowhide leather type sewing. Maybe patching a harness once in a while or repairing your leather belt, but not on a regular basis. One of the strongest Singer domestic Machines would do better, like model 15-91, but it is still a domestic machine and not made for sewing leather full time.
Thanks for making these. I have this machine and use it to hem my work clothes, 65poly 35 cotton, not too heavy. Problem is the machine stops near seams. Doesnt seem to want to go through 3 layers. Is that just this machine ir should i start looking at issues. I put a new top gear in and lubed er up when i got it. Appreciate any input
The machine is capable of sewing like that. Here is another model sewing demo that has the same motor as your machine: ruclips.net/video/CJd4bJOby78/видео.html Most often if power seems week it is due to the foot control needing cleaning and adjusting. It is a carbon resistor style and I doubt anyone has ever worked on it. Here is a playlist of how to restore it: ruclips.net/p/PLsCOZgzzaiKItPLWcK24FBoMdHK8vTXNi Sometimes it can be that the motor commutator is also dirty with carbon deposits. The motor can also be cleaned and the brushes reseated to increase power. ruclips.net/video/rpTy_Bz3prA/видео.html All of the above is assuming you are using the correct needle for what you are sewing and the needle is in good condition. The needle is the cheapest part of any sewing project. Also assuming there is no binding of the gear you replaced or the timing belt you reset.
Sorry to hear that. I don't work on the T & S models. I assume the new gears are all plastic and if the noise seems to be from them you can adjust the mesh incase it is too tight and causing binding & stress. If you can narrow down where the noise is somewhat it can lead to other solutions. You can try to contact Terry if you like. He knows more about T & S Models than anyone I know. Hello Andy, I have a 457, when I bought it I had to replace the top gear on the verticle shaft before I could use it. She's been running smoothly ever since. Recently however, I've encountered a slowly worsening problem that manifests itself in a loss of "strength" or "vivacity". The machine runs slow and sometimes needs me to turn the manual wheel to help it to start but no longer reaches full speed. I thought the source of the problem was from the clam pedal. I watched all five of your videos, then dismounted and cleaned the pedal. Unfortunatley this was not the source of the problem. Please, do you have any counsel as to where to trouble shoot next ? I hope you get this message, I watched your most recent video. I hope you change your mind and come back soon. Best wishes from France !
Sorry to hear this, Cary. Cleaning and adjusting the foot controller was a very good step, as that is often the cause of sluggish, underpowered performance. Nicely done. Here are some other things to think about that I have come across. Check the set screws on the new gear and the hook pulley for tightness. You don't need to overtighten, just be sure they are nice and snug. After hours of running and the metal expanding and contracting for warmth/heat, those screws we thought were tight may be slightly loose. Be sure you have oiled all the correct places, including that little hole in the center of the hook; under the bobbin using a good quality sewing machine oil or TriFlow product. If you need a copy of the Instruction Manual with oiling instructions you can get a PDF downloaded copy from Singer for free; www.singer.com/search/support?title=457 The next thing to look at is the commutator on the motor. It's a little bit more involved on the 457 b/c you must pull the motor out of the machine. You leave the wires attached, set the motor on the table/bench, and use a diamond stone ($10) to polish the commutator and reseat the brushes. It's amazing how this will increase power from the motor. The best thing you can do for a sewing machine motor, IMO. I show using the diamond stone in this video; ruclips.net/video/rpTy_Bz3prA/видео.html Here is a video to help you see how to pull the motor out of the machine. I can do this now without moving the light; ruclips.net/video/Hvacqu44-mo/видео.html I hope this helps move you forward, Cary. Good luck, and thanks for watching my channel.
Hi, Margaret. A few things can cause this problem. Always start by being sure the machine has been properley lubricated. There are 21 oiling points on a 457K machine. Use sewing machine oil. If you don't have the manual you can download a free copy from Singer SUpport on this page: www.singer.com/search/support?title=457 If oiling does not improve performance the next most common reason is the foot controller (pedal) needs cleaning and adjusting. The foot pedal controls power to the motor and if the motor is slow to speed up or "groans & moans" when first pushing on the pedal that indicates a cleaning and adjusting is required. Here is a Playlist of videos about restoring your pedal to optimum performance: ruclips.net/p/PLsCOZgzzaiKItPLWcK24FBoMdHK8vTXNi Not everyone wants to do that so if preferred you can buy a new pedal, like the newer electronic ones that stay cool and have superior speed control. You can find them without a cord and reuse your original cords: www.ebay.com/itm/231883233121?hash=item35fd515761:g:ES4AAOxy-o5R0QZa and you can find them with the proper cords for your machine: www.sewingpartsonline.com/foot-control-singer-988274-104.aspx The last possibility I have found is the timing belt had been replaced and installed too tightly: ruclips.net/video/dW6haHu4-hU/видео.html Good luck, and thanks for watching my channel.
uh oh...sorry to hear that :) This machine had the same problem. I found a broken gear at the top of the vertical shaft. The bottom of that shaft has sprockets and a belt that operate the hook/bobbin. I had to replace that gear & belt. In my restoration slide show there are pictures of the broken gear and then the new one in place. Take the top cover off your 457 (2 silver screws) and look at the gears on your machine; I think it is broken. Here is a link to the pictures: ruclips.net/video/y_58gXoZqjA/видео.html Best wishes.
I have the same machine but when is in reverse and zigzag has a strong sound like two pieces of metal hitting each other do you have any idea about what is wrong with it ? Thanks great video
Lots of possibilities for this, Otto. You'll need to isolate more. Is it only when you are in reverse AND ZZ at the same time? So is forward ZZ OK without noise? Is straight stitch reverseOK then? See where I am going here? Is the metal-hitting noise rhythmic like thunk, thunk, thunk, or is it a constant scraping? The feed dog can hit the body under the needle plate in reverse. The needle clamp can hit the top of the presser foot. The vibrating bracket that swings the needle can need adjusting. The follower arm that tracks the ZZ pattern disc on the cam stack can be out of adjustment. Remove the bobbin and all upper thread and just sew air and see if you still have the noise. Then remove the needle plate and see. Then remove the nose cover and watch the needle bar and bracket. You can buy and download a copy of the Service Manual for $6.99 at this link: manualsoncd.com/product/singer-400-series-service-and-repair-sewing-machine-manual/ it covers all the R & R and adjustment instructions for your machine.
@@ottomora4485 OK, thanks for that. It is illogical though, to me. The feed system and the ZZ system are separate systems. The feed regulator behind the lever controls the feed movement from front to back (regular sewing) or changes it from back to front. (reverse sewing. It does not matter whether the needle bar is set to straight sewing or ZZ. The stitch width lever controls whether the needle moves up & down in one place for straight sewing, or the needle swings are varying amounts for ZZ sewing. That is independent of the feed and acts the same no matter if the machine is set to forward sew, neutral sew, or reverse sew. So I don't get that something is only happening when the settings are reverse and ZZ only, and other times no problem. What a puzzler. Some 457 models were made with a feed drop system (feed throw out) that lowers the feed dog for free-style sewing like mending or monogramming. I never tried reverse sewing of any type with the feed dropped so I don't know for a fact that that could cause the problem. On several models I have worked on if the feed drop system was misadjusted the feed dog could hit inside of the body at the back, away from the needle/hook. If you do have the feed drop knob (on the bed to the right, next to the upright arm) you could watch this video about the feed drop to get an idea of how it works. ruclips.net/video/hxOscoEdkxY/видео.html Model 457 (and family) have a problem with the main arm shaft getting out of adjustment, like loose, and allowing the arm shaft to move side to side from the handwheel to the nose which can cause a "knocking" and make noise. Here is a video about readjusting that: ruclips.net/video/bYqVRDTAHfo/видео.html I did have a 457 years ago that made weird noises of clanking and it took a while to discover someone had worked on the cam stack and did not tighten the set screw that held it in place. Once I adjusted the stack into the worm gear of the arm shaft it quieted right down. ruclips.net/video/egDAePpqjW0/видео.html I guess those may be some possibilities, but I'm shooting in the dark, really. I would remove all covers, top, bottom, and nose and remove the needle plate and all threading and run the machine to try and isolate the noise to a location as much as possible. I still recommend the Service Manual I mentioned before. Good luck.
Hi Andy. The plug socket on my newly purchased Singer 457 is smaller than the one in your video - do you know where i might be able to find a reference for the different Singer plug types? I took a gamble with one that i thought would fit on eBay - but it's the same size as yours and doesn't fit. Any tips greatly appreciated. Thanks!
I am not aware of and have never seen a reference chart for Singer Terminals or plug sizes. I have done a few model 457 restores and have not found anything smaller about the socket on the ones I did. Are you located in the USA? I just wondered if it is the 110V Motor in the machine. There are many sellers of cords, both new and vintage, but few sellers of the terminal/wiring unless they are parting out a machine on eBay. Since you did not get the cords or foot controller with the machine I assume you are looking to buy both. Have you thought about a new? Here is a very well known seller who has cords, foot controllers, including the electronic type, and she will even install the cord to the controller you buy for a small additional fee. shop.sew-classic.com/Cord-Set-Singer-337-338-347-348-457-466-476-477-478-97991-004.htm shop.sew-classic.com/Foot-Control-Electronic-2-Wire-Type-UL-12-amp-SCE168FC.htm According to this seller, the same cord set is for Singer 337, 338, 347, 348, 457, 466, 476, 477, 478. I did look at the parts list/diagram for the 457 hoping I could get you a part number or more info, but the terminal (socket) and cord sets are not shown. Good Luck.
You have this model 457? It's called the stop motion knob. It may be stuck to the clamp behind it. I don't know the condition of your machine. Generally, it needs to be removed and cleaned but if it is stuck you must be patient and try to get some penetrating oil or cleaner inside to loosen it. It may have dried oil which can act as a "glue" when it gets old and dry. Take out the stop screw and get wd-40 or similar inside and around any edges or opening. Warming the parts with a hair dryer can also help. Here are a couple of videos that show removing and replacing to give you an idea of what is inside there. ruclips.net/video/eZiMaaka5HE/видео.html ruclips.net/video/hHl96WL1kzA/видео.html
Hi Andy, do you have a video that explains how to replace and adjust the large plastic wheel/switch that controls the blind stitch located above front control panel. I have a Stylist 477 that looks clean inside and out but the blind switch wheel has a large piece broken away from thumb wheel that I discovered after removing the top cover... Do you think something badly mechanical in the machine caused this?
A couple videos I made I show R&R the dial. start at 3:15 into this video: ruclips.net/video/egDAePpqjW0/видео.html I also remove and replace that dial for cleaning below it in this video of a model 513: ruclips.net/video/_SuIiVok64k/видео.html You can find used vintage parts on eBay and such sites if you are patient and find someone parting out a machine. Connie at ThriftyFarmGirl.com has a couple like it from a model 413 and a 457. It looks like the same part, but you can tell more than I. If you find a part number on the bottom of the dial you can ask Connie to check the ones she is selling for that part number. The dial was on a few models, maybe with different color ink on it or something, but the same size/holes/etc I believe. I've bought from Connie for a number of years with great satisfaction. A trusted seller high on my list. www.thriftyfarmgirl.com/singer-413-stylist-sewing-machine-parts www.thriftyfarmgirl.com/singer-457-stylist-sewing-machine-parts You don't say which side of the wheel is broken, but it sounds like the backside if you did not notice until you removed the cover. I have no clue as to how it broke, but all the moving parts are below it, so maybe the screw was over tightened, or it was damaged and had a crack or defect from previous work on it. If an edge of the wheel that was outside the cover then lowering or raising the machine from a cabinet or removing/replacing the lid on a portable case may have struck the dial/wheel. I've never seen a broken one before.
@@andytubesewing1953 Thanks Andy.. you are a wealth of knowledge.. your reply peaked my curiousity so I disassembled the cam area disc and discovered it missing a fashion disc directly under the thumb wheel. The Zig-Zag (#1)was still in it's place. My best guess is whoever worked the machine last, forgot to install the second disc then began tightening the center fastener forcing the plastic thumb wheel to bottom out on the machine housing causing the crack! Anyway I've installed new thumb wheel, new needle and the missing disc and oiled the machine and adjusted the thread tensioner per your video. Now she purring like kitten.. and sews real good too! Lol
@@briankilgore9227 SO happy you let me know what you found! It helps me when I get questions like this. I think you are correct as to what happened. So, good on you for saving that machine! Hope you do another one in the future. Take Care.
By replacing the broken plastic gear on the top of the vertical shaft. That shaft goes from top to the bottom to power the right side pulley and timing belt over to the left side pulley which turns the hook. When the gear breaks apart from age the shaft/pulleys/belt/hook all stop turning. The gear costs about $10 and this is such a common problem I made a video about replacing the gear and resetting the timing. The video is up to 47K views which tells us how common the problem is on a group of models of that decade. Here is the video: ruclips.net/video/M3bFtlV1Y6s/видео.html My video is a couple hours long and goes into great detail, like a step-by-step. Here is a 9-minute video by Rik Miles that is kind of a condensed version to get the main idea across ruclips.net/video/fYVqCjtdu6w/видео.html Best of luck, and thanks for watching my channel.
You can buy used vintage and new electronic pedal on eBay and other online stores. Personally, I'd buy a new electronic. Here are a couple of trusted sellers. It is the FEED THROW-OUT KNOB. Models 457, 466, 477 and 478 all used the same body. Some machines in each model were made with a feed throw-out knob. Quantity unknown. The knob is marked with the letters "F" for feed and "D" for darn. None of the instruction manuals show or mention the knob. The darning instructions simply say to install the "FEED COVER PLATE"; an extra needle plate with a raised covered area to prevent the feed dog from contacting the fabric. There is one Service Manual that covers all four models. The knob is shown in all pictures of the different models. There is a Remove & Replace section that describes how to remove and replace the knob and pitman parts. All four parts diagrams for the models show the knob and pitman with parts numbers. You don't see very many machines with the knob and no one seems to know why some machines include it.
Hi Tim. Thanks for asking. When you turn the knob from "F" to "D" a mechanism under the bed "throws out" the FEED DOG, which really means it lowers the feed dog below the surface of the needle plate. This is used for free-hand sewing, like darning, monogramming or freestyle quilting. You must move the fabric by hand instead of having the FEED DOG pulling (or pushing) the fabric past the needle. Throw-out is really an archaic term. These days we would call it "feed drop" or maybe "feed dog drop". Thank you for watching. Good question.
I have one of these sewing machines and its not turning if i loosen the knob at the back and it will spin just fine but if its tight and to make the needle move up and down it barley moves or does not move at all any ideas how to fix this. I no longer have a manual for this machine and if i need to oil it i have no idea where to oil it and what type of oil i can use. I do have some WD40 around can that be used.
A Couple of possibilities here. Needs a good clean/oiling, or worn/loose motor belt. Start by going to this link, where you put in the Singer Model Number and download a free coy of the instruction manual. It will show how to remove all the covers and where to oil. www.singerco.com/support/instruction-manuals I would not use WD-40, 3-in-1 oil, or similar. Use sewing machine oil or machine oil only. Walmart and hardware stores. I use Tri-Flow, which is available at some hardware stores and most bicycle shops. Use it liberally at first to get things moving. If you do use WD-40, remember it is NOT AN OIL, so after cleaning it off you will still need to oil everything anyway. If that solves the problem, clean the machine and do a light oiling. I have had luck using a hair dryer to loosen sticky needle bars, etc. A little heat, a little oil, turn the handwheel and repeat a few times. If the motor belt is loose, you can watch my video of how to install/adjust the motor belt. It's on a different model, but the belt/motor system is the same. ruclips.net/video/RuOLUVPsQv8/видео.html I hope this will help you out. Please lets us know how it turns out or if you have another question. Take Care.
I love my sewing machine, I've been using it as often as I can. downloaded my manual, watched your videos and I've gone from curtains to quilting and clothes making. Could I implore you to do a video on maintenance? I think I've been oiling and cleaning correctly but I'm also certain I've messed up my tension somehow, no matter how much i adjust the top tension the bobbin thread just seems to ride along the fabric. I keep meaning to take it in to my local singer guy but hes only open certain days. help! I'm participating in my first quilt block swap but I'm afraid I'm going to mess up my machine if I continue to use it if I'm improperly maintaining/using it.
Good on you for using your machine so much, and sorry you have a tension problem. I don't have a 457 right now but I have done a number of tension videos. If your bobbin thread is flat it usually means you have ZERO needle thread tension! It's gone. It may be a cracked or broken tension indicator. ( the - | + on the dial) It has a horizontal bar that the tension pin pushes on to release tension. If the tension indicator is plastic, it can crack and then the tension discs don't open. When you thread the needle the thread never goes between the discs and you don't get tension on the thread. Here are some links to my tension videos that may help. Hey quick question because you seem to know about this machine, ive threaded the needle and got the bobbin in the bobbin holder but when i try to thread the bobbin the needle thread gets caught on the bobbin and keeps going around it over and over until it gets jammed.
If the thread catches on the bobbin you may have the wrong style/size bobbin. Singer model 457 uses a Singer Class 66 bobbin with curved sides; curved like a saucer. People often pick up Class 15 bobbins but they are a little taller and the sides are flat, not curved. When the hook catches the needle thread it drags it over the bobbin to wrap it around the bobbin thread. If you have a Class 15 bobbin that's too tall the thread catches inside the edge of the bobbin over and over until the hook gets jammed. Class 66 bobbins are avail in most Walmarts, Sewing/Fabric stores, Craft stores, Amazon, eBay, etc.
Hi, Maegan. You can download a FREE copy of the 66-page Instruction Manual from Singer at this link www.singer.com/search/support?title=457 ZigZag stitch sewing starts on page 23. This model is one of a few know to have a high failure rate in a gear that makes the hook rotate counterclockwise around the bobbin case, so look for that. Here is a playlist of my videos for model 457 and one of them is how to change the top gearruclips.net/p/PLsCOZgzzaiKK9GeuGLCo6ZyWv-HbheRVK. Just a heads up that a bad gear may be your problem if the machine won't sew. Thanks for watching my channel and good luck
IMO there are no semi-industrial models made by Singer. That being said, model 457K can certainly sew the things you mention. If you plan to sew those types of things all the time you may want a model 403A or 404. Model 457K has a plastic gear that is famous for breaking b/c it is 50 years old. You can replace the gear for about $10 and a couple hours of watching my video about how to do it. If you used it all the time for heavy stuff you would eventually wear out the gear again. Models 403A and 404 have all steel gears with a direct drive motor. They are stronger but still domestic. You can download manuals for all of these directly from SInger SUpport for FREE at this link: www.singer.com/support The manuals all have charts of recommended fabrics and which thread and needle sizes to use along with how to use the machine and oil it. I also have videos of all of those models if you want to see more about them. Hi, great instruction on this machine. I was just given one and the height of the all-purpose presser foot seems low--it's hard to get a folded hem underneath it. You mentioned a "short shank", would this just be an anomaly of this 457 machine? Versus say my old Singer 185? Thanks!
Hi Angel, I'm not familiar with the Singer Model 185. By short shank I mean the standard Singer straight vertical shank presser bar & foot, VS. the Singer Slant shank presser bar & foot, like found on Models 301A, 401A,404, 500. Maybe who ever gave you the machine gave a wrong foot with it too. Maybe it's a Kenmore foot, or Jenome, Husqvarna, Elna, etc. How does the foot compare to the one on your 185? By the model number of 185 I figure it was made before the first slant shank (301A) which was made in 1950. Try this: with the presser bar raised up, 4 US Quarters should fit under the bottom of the presser foot. The factory spec is .290 to .300 inch, so it is a pinch more than 4 US Quarters. If they don't fit on your 457, there are a couple of possibilities. Are you using the correct foot for the 457? Is the presser bar set at the correct height? Here is a link to one of my videos setting the height of a presser bar. It is just one screw to loosen, adjust height , tighten. S you could loosen a screw, put 4 US Quarters under the foot, and tighten the screw. The video is of a different model, but it should show you how to adjust. ruclips.net/video/ABCyJyZbqCY/видео.html Please let us know if this helped and what happens so others can learn from it too. Thank you for asking and watching Andy Tube.

Sometimes there is oil on the back of the knob where it contacts the washer and the oil dried up hard, like varnish or glue. I've had pretty good luck heating the knob (chrome) all around for a few minutes trying to get the oil softened up. Wear gloves if you touch the knob right away. I have also had to protect the knob with a cloth and put a wrench, like a channel lock or vise grip to get leverage and force it to turn. That's usually the last resort though.
Hello, I cleaned off old grease and used Triflow on the shaft gears (metal and plastic too unfortunately) of my Singer stylist 478. Now it will not move at all and smoke rises from above the motor. What can I do?
What was the cleaning method? Triflow as in oil, grease or both? Smoke above the motor, not from the motor? The motor belt goes up to the handwheel, oil on the belt can make smoke. The top gear of the vertical shaft is above the motor a little farther inside. It's a plastic gear. Tell me a little more how you cleaned off the old grease, what you used for cleaner, oil or grease. Don't try the machine again yet.
@@andytubesewing1953 This machine was not working, in closet for many years. Got it serviced, on return dripping oil into the carry case. Sat in closet a few more years. Then I oiled machine with Dritz zoom spout, Krud Kutter to oily timing belt. Stitching well, but stalling, had to rotate handwheel to start stitching. Then I cleaned creamy grease off metal shaft gear and plastic gears of vertical shaft using q-tips. Then greased all of them with Tri-Flow. It sewed briefly, then locked up with smoke rising from inside the machine near the plastic gears. Cleaned off the grease from plastic gears and again from timing belt, no improvement. Opened side plate below handwheel. Motor covered in oil. Flecks of black on machine near the belt, but belt looked OK. Thank you for all you do for Singer owners.
@@joannaandreesen7789 You did a lot of work there. I don't put grease on plastic, but the maker of TriFlow says it is safe to use on most plastics. Yes, a motor covered in oil can make problems. If you feel like pulling the motor out you can clean and dry it. Black flecks are usually from the dried edges of the sides of the belt and very common on an old belt. @@andytubesewing1953 I will study your recommended you tubes. I forgot to mention that in the bobbin winding setting, the belt and handwheel turn freely without smoke, if that makes a difference. Thank you.
@@joannaandreesen7789 Were you running the motor to turn the handwheel in the BW mode? If so that is a good sign for the motor. IF the motor itself was bad it would smoke while running even if you had the belt off the machine. In your original comment, you mentioned the machine would not move at all. If you put the machine back in sewing mode and the motor will not move the handwheel or needle bar then something has seized; a shaft, bushing, bearing. If nothing got accidentally dropped into a gear or something, then seizure is usually (not always) caused by lack of oil, or really dirty bushing full of dried up oil and crud. I'd be looking in the mechanics, not the motor if you say the motor turned the handwheel well without smoking while in BW mode.

I just picked up the singer zig zag 476 which is really similar to this machine and I missed up the timing on it and now my hook isn't swinging around. Any ideas on how I can fix it?
Hi Melissa, Since I don't know your experience level, I'll start with basics :) Did you check the clutch release knob is engaged? The smaller knob on the hand wheel must be full turned to the right (away from you) to engage the hook/feed dogs/needle bar. The hook is powered by a pulley system on the bottom of the machine, which in turn is powered by a gear system up on the top side. There are plastic gears that break over time and that would prevent the power reaching the pulleys and belt below that run the hook. In this slide show, starting at 0:20 & 3:11 are pictures of the gear set and their location up top: ruclips.net/video/y_58gXoZqjA/видео.html If You don't have a manual for your machine, go here to download a free copy: www.singerco.com/support/instruction-manuals On pages 64 & 65 are diagrams of the gears & pulley system to give you an idea of how it works. That gear on the top of the vertical shaft was broken on my machine an I had to replace it. It is a known problem in this series of Singer machines, especially when people have mistakenly put grease on those plastic gears, which made the Lexan Plastic become very brittle. NO GREASE/OIL ON PLASTIC GEARS PLEASE! The new gear cost about $9.00. It took me an hour to do the labor.
We opened it up and we see the broken gear so we are going to order one online. Any ideas on how we get to where it goes? Is it in one of your other videos? Thanks so much!
Nevermind! It took a lot of tinkering but we got in there and got it out. Now to order the replacement. Thanks so much for your advice on where to look!

Hi again, I have a new problem. I was successful in putting bobbin case and holder back but the rotary hook is not turning. Thanks for your help

@@lindabailey7679 Best of luck then, Linda. The machine is worth saving; strong and versatile.

I'm so glad you found the video then and I hope you enjoy the machine it's a very versatile one I think you'll like it thanks for your comments
Thank you SO much for your quick response. Already ordered the part.
Sure, no worries. You'll be sewing again soon 👍
If you need the instruction manual it is available here for free: www.singerco.com/support/instruction-manuals
Thank yoou for subscribig and leavig such a nice comment.
Thank you, this is so useful. I'm using my Mum's old machine (with no manual) and I've just learned a couple of things I wasn't aware of. 😊

Model 457 is a strong, versatile model, but I want to make you aware of a known weak spot.
Here is the video: ruclips.net/video/M3bFtlV1Y6s/видео.html
I feel if you have the original gear and it is not broken yet it soon will be. During this virus "stay at home" period I have dozens of emails about the gear. {people get out an old family machine and soon after they start sewing masks the gear gives out. Sometimes, someone has already replaced the gear, but that is fairly rare.
You know where I am, so don't be a stranger if you have questions about your 457.
Take Care.

When I look here: www.saving.org/inflation/inflation.php?amount=184&year=1970
it says that is over $1100 in 2016 dollars! Imaging that. If I had that much to spend today, wonder what kind of machine I could buy? Here is an article from 2012 with some machines in that range: freshlypieced.com/2012/07/sewing-machine-shopping-what-i-learned.html

Can you tell me how to put a light 💡 in a singer 478 stylist

I hope your gear is fine and good luck. Thanks for watching my channel.
There is an adjustment for the needle position bracket assembly and for centering the needle bar, etc. If you email me andymanuals53@gmail.com I'll send you the service manual and parts diagram (free) If you don't care for that, you can buy and download the manual for $7 at this link manualsoncd.com/product/singer-400-series-service-and-repair-sewing-machine-manual/ it's always good to have the service manuals if you can find them, IMO. Thanks.

I'll start by letting you know you can buy and download the original Service Manual for $6.99 here: manualsoncd.com/product/singer-400-series-service-and-repair-sewing-machine-manual/ It is always a good idea to give the machine a complete lubrication before making any adjustments or repairs b/c that may fix the problem. If your machine is in a plastic case bottom, there are 2 long screws and a thumb nut/washer holding the case bottom to the machine. Inside that case bottom, there may, or may not, be a metal oil pan/ drip pan/ base cover. Start watching this video at the 21:30 mark;

Thanks for taking the time to comment.
If you need a manual Singer still has it for free download at this link: www.singer.com/search/support?title=457
My playlist of videos for model 457 also has videos for threading the needle and winding the bobbin: ruclips.net/p/PLsCOZgzzaiKK9GeuGLCo6ZyWv-HbheRVK Start with those and see if it corrects the problem.
It all makes sense, I have a machine I got i the early 80’s that was exactly as you said with the plastic gears, and the vague lubrication instruction photo. Pretty sure I oiled that, too. Yoinks.

That has to be the best deal of 2017! Congratulations you guys. Here are a couple of videos about removing rust and polishing small parts. Depending on the rust amount, you may just need to polish them with Brasso, and not need The Must For Rust product. Thank you very much for this onfo. It says in the book that the 457 can be used as a treadle, but dosn't say how. would you know?
You can buy the service manual. It has instructions for converting the machine to (or from) treadle, but you need parts. You must remove the motor, you must change to a special treadle handwheel (part number unknown), you must install an Idler Pulley for the Treadle Belt inside the machine, and you must replace (or leave totally off) the bedplate cover (oil drip pan on the bottom of machine) b/c the treadle belt will come out the bottom of the machine. Hi Andy,
I just found a Singer 437 standing outside. I took it in to see if it still works and it mostly does. electricity works and the machine moves mostly smooth. however, when you put the bobbin thread and the top thread in and try to sew with it, it gets terrible stuck right away. i am not quite sure what the problem ist. i took the bobbin pin out and the capsule too, cleaned a little, but it wasnt too dirty anyways. it still gets terribly stuck and makes not a single stich.
i have tried to make a video of what happens, maybe you would have a look at it for me? and maybe you have a suggestion as to what i could try. i think it would be a real shame to throw the machine away as it works fine otherwise.
forgot to mention: the singer machine i found is a singer 437. for all i can see it is really similar to the 457, with smaller differences
Hi, Yvonne. Thanks for trying to save this machine. Model 437 was not sold in the USA when it was made. I have no parts or repair documents for it, sorry. I did find the instruction manual here: www.singer.com/sites/default/files/product_manual/SINGER%20437%20Sewing%20Machine.pdf
It does look like a free-arm 457 model, or at least in that family. There are a few things that could cause the machine to "get terribly stuck" right away and more info is needed, but here is a video about thread clearance. If the bobbin cushioning spring is out of adjustment then the thread hangs up there and the machine can "stick" or "freeze" from that. Here is a video about that on a model 404 to give you an idea of what I mean: ruclips.net/video/OXKqZp87eN4/видео.html
You could also go here and buy a service guide for model 457 for $7 and see if that would help. It has many instructions for removal, replacement, and adjustment of parts. manualsoncd.com/product/singer-400-series-service-and-repair-sewing-machine-manual/
hi thanks for your quick reply. i am based in germany, maybe that explains how i found the 437 :)
when i found it it there were some threads hanging out from underneath the needle plate, it was difficult to remove them. i pushed open the needle plate and tried to carefully get the threads out, but they were stuck to the degree i had to remove the bobbin cushioning spring. but i put that one back in (correctly i believe at least looks the same as before to me, but i have never tried to repair a sewing machine.
i will upload my video on my channel and maybe you can see it there. will try to make a better one tomorrow. i mean if you are interested.
my video is online, it is short am and i turn the hand wheel on the side that is why it is so slow. i should try to make a better video tomorrow probably.
i will go and look at your video again now.
I watched your video. The needle thread gets stuck after it is cast0off the hook. It looks like there is no gap between the bobbin case and the bobbin case spring. watch the video I referred you to and use a feeler gauge to set the gap.
Thank you.very helpful

Here is how I clean a bobbin case; ruclips.net/video/HT5XZ5eYYEQ/видео.html
I have often found lint & dirt packed between the tension spring and the side of the case that prevents the spring from putting tension on the bobbin thread.
The spring mounting screw is part #1172;
www.sewingpartsonline.com/bobbin-case-tension-screw-singer-1172.aspx
The tension adjustment screw is part #1173; www.sewingpartsonline.com/bobbin-case-tension-screw-singer-1173.aspx and there may be other sellers but with the part numbers you can search around.
Would this particular machine be able to sew leather? Thanks in advance
Here is a playlist of how to restore it:
ruclips.net/p/PLsCOZgzzaiKItPLWcK24FBoMdHK8vTXNi
Sometimes it can be that the motor commutator is also dirty with carbon deposits. The motor can also be cleaned and the brushes reseated to increase power. ruclips.net/video/rpTy_Bz3prA/видео.html
All of the above is assuming you are using the correct needle for what you are sewing and the needle is in good condition. The needle is the cheapest part of any sewing project. Also assuming there is no binding of the gear you replaced or the timing belt you reset.
Hi I just replaced all the gears on a touch and sew. It’s sewing great but it is super loud. Any suggestions?
Sorry to hear that. I don't work on the T & S models. I assume the new gears are all plastic and if the noise seems to be from them you can adjust the mesh incase it is too tight and causing binding & stress. If you can narrow down where the noise is somewhat it can lead to other solutions. You can try to contact Terry if you like. He knows more about T & S Models than anyone I know. Here is his website;

Hello Andy,
I have a 457, when I bought it I had to replace the top gear on the verticle shaft before I could use it.
Sorry to hear this, Cary. Cleaning and adjusting the foot controller was a very good step, as that is often the cause of sluggish, underpowered performance. Nicely done. Here are some other things to think about that I have come across. Check the set screws on the new gear and the hook pulley for tightness. You don't need to overtighten, just be sure they are nice and snug. After hours of running and the metal expanding and contracting for warmth/heat, those screws we thought were tight may be slightly loose. Be sure you have oiled all the correct places, including that little hole in the center of the hook; under the bobbin using a good quality sewing machine oil or TriFlow product. If you need a copy of the Instruction Manual with oiling instructions you can get a PDF downloaded copy from Singer for free;
www.singer.com/search/support?title=457
The next thing to look at is the commutator on the motor. I can do this now without moving the light; ruclips.net/video/Hvacqu44-mo/видео.html
I hope this helps move you forward, Cary. Good luck, and thanks for watching my channel.
Hi I have to hand turn the hand wheel to get it to start sewing .most of the time .help .
Hi, Margaret. A few things can cause this problem. Always start by being sure the machine has been properley lubricated. There are 21 oiling points on a 457K machine. Use sewing machine oil. If you don't have the manual you can download a free copy from Singer SUpport on this page: www.singer.com/search/support?title=457
If oiling does not improve performance the next most common reason is the foot controller (pedal) needs cleaning and adjusting. The foot pedal controls power to the motor and if the motor is slow to speed up or "groans & moans" when first pushing on the pedal that indicates a cleaning and adjusting is required. Here is a Playlist of videos about restoring your pedal to optimum performance:
ruclips.net/p/PLsCOZgzzaiKItPLWcK24FBoMdHK8vTXNi
Not everyone wants to do that so if preferred you can buy a new pedal, like the newer electronic ones that stay cool and have superior speed control. You can find them without a cord and reuse your original cords: www.ebay.com/itm/231883233121?hash=item35fd515761:g:ES4AAOxy-o5R0QZa and you can find them with the proper cords for your machine: www.sewingpartsonline.com/foot-control-singer-988274-104.aspx
The last possibility I have found is the timing belt had been replaced and installed too tightly: ruclips.net/video/dW6haHu4-hU/видео.html
Good luck, and thanks for watching my channel.
Hi, I just bought this exact model sewing machine from a garage sale. My bobbin won't move for some reason. I have no clue what it could be :(
uh oh...sorry to hear that :) This machine had the same problem. Here is a link to the pictures:
ruclips.net/video/y_58gXoZqjA/видео.html
Best wishes.
You can buy and download a copy of the Service Manual for $6.99 at this link:
manualsoncd.com/product/singer-400-series-service-and-repair-sewing-machine-manual/ it covers all the R & R and adjustment instructions for your machine.
@@andytubesewing1953 only in reverse and ZZ at the same time other ways it is working perfectly
If you do have the feed drop knob (on the bed to the right, next to the upright arm) you could watch this video about the feed drop to get an idea of how it works. ruclips.net/video/hxOscoEdkxY/видео.html
Model 457 (and family) have a problem with the main arm shaft getting out of adjustment, like loose, and allowing the arm shaft to move side to side from the handwheel to the nose which can cause a "knocking" and make noise. Here is a video about readjusting that: ruclips.net/video/bYqVRDTAHfo/видео.html
I did have a 457 years ago that made weird noises of clanking and it took a while to discover someone had worked on the cam stack and did not tighten the set screw that held it in place. Once I adjusted the stack into the worm gear of the arm shaft it quieted right down. ruclips.net/video/egDAePpqjW0/видео.html
I guess those may be some possibilities, but I'm shooting in the dark, really.
Thanks!
(P.S i forgot to mention that the machine didn't come with a foot pedal or electrical cables of any kind)

Hi Andy, good morning. Pls I can't move the smaller wheel in the hand wheel, what do I do
You have this model 457? It's called the stop motion knob. It may be stuck to the clamp behind it. I don't know the condition of your machine. Generally, it needs to be removed and cleaned but if it is stuck you must be patient and try to get some penetrating oil or cleaner inside to loosen it. It may have dried oil which can act as a "glue" when it gets old and dry. Take out the stop screw and get wd-40 or similar inside and around any edges or opening. Warming the parts with a hair dryer can also help. Here are a couple of videos that show removing and replacing to give you an idea of what is inside there. ruclips.net/video/eZiMaaka5HE/видео.html

A couple videos I made I show R&R the dial.
start at 3:15 into this video: ruclips.net/video/egDAePpqjW0/видео.html
I also remove and replace that dial for cleaning below it in this video of a model 513:
ruclips.net/video/_SuIiVok64k/видео.html You can find used vintage parts on eBay and such sites if you are patient and find someone parting out a machine.

You don't say which side of the wheel is broken, but it sounds like the backside if you did not notice until you removed the cover.
Take Care.
My Singer model 476 bobbin pulley isn’t moving. How can this be repaired?
Here is a 9-minute video by Rik Miles that is kind of a condensed version to get the main idea across ruclips.net/video/fYVqCjtdu6w/видео.html

Hi where can I get a foot control for this model .
You can buy used vintage and new electronic pedal on eBay and other online stores. Personally, I'd buy a new electronic. Here are a couple of trusted sellers. Check shipping times.
www.ebay.com/itm/Singer-Foot-Pedal-Control-Sewing-Machine-337-347-457-466-467-476-477-478-/380311608848
www.sewingpartsonline.com/foot-control-singer-988274-104.aspx
There must have been two versions of these. Mine had a round plastic knob on the bed of the machine.
Thank you for the explanation.
Welcome. It was a great question. I pinned it at the top for others to see.
Mine has that too. What does the FEED THROW-OUT KNOB do? BTW, thanks for these videos. I finally know how to use this machine!
It will show how to remove all the covers and where to oil.
www.singerco.com/support/instruction-manuals
I would not use WD-40, 3-in-1 oil, or similar.

If you need more info, please email my channel email address of andytube53@gmail.com. That is a better forum for sharing info and I can send pictures and a free Singer Service & adjustment Guide in pdf format. Good Luck.

The 287 which I have has the bobbin winder on the front too otherwise it's identical to the 237.
Not to many of those here in the US I think. It looks like a sturdy machine www.singersewinginfo.co.uk/gallery_machines/
Thanks for sharing.

Mr Andy excuse me, this model is semi industrial? Can I to sew canvas fabric, denim ir faux leather?

I just got one of these today but I can't loosen the knob to wind the bobbin. Help, please!

What was the cleaning method? Triflow as in oil, grease or both? Smoke above the motor, not from the motor? The motor belt goes up to the handwheel, oil on the belt can make smoke. The top gear of the vertical shaft is above the motor a little farther inside. It's a plastic gear.

Oil/grease on the belt is a problem too.

How to replace the famous broken plastic gear on the vertical shaft, model457:

Can you show how to put the needle please

Thank you for the video!
You are welcome. Thanks for taking the time to comment.
Hi Andy, the bobbin hook is not rotating.
There's a plastic gear on the top of the vertical shaft that rotates the timing belt that rotates the hook. The plastic gear is surely worn out by now and needs replacing. You can buy the gear for about $10 and here's a video showing the process in a step-by-step method to replace the gear and reset the timing. ruclips.net/video/M3bFtlV1Y6s/видео.html

Thanks so much I will let you know how it goes.when I get part. 😃
I just picked up the singer zig zag 476 which is really similar to this machine and I missed up the timing on it and now my hook isn't swinging around. Any ideas on how I can fix it?
Hi Melissa,
Since I don't know your experience level, I'll start with basics :)
Did you check the clutch release knob is engaged? The smaller knob on the hand wheel must be full turned to the right (away from you) to engage the hook/feed dogs/needle bar.
The hook is powered by a pulley system on the bottom of the machine, which in turn is powered by a gear system up on the top side. There are plastic gears that break over time and that would prevent the power reaching the pulleys and belt below that run the hook. In this slide show, starting at 0:20 & 3:11 are pictures of the gear set and their location up top: ruclips.net/video/y_58gXoZqjA/видео.html
If You don't have a manual for your machine, go here to download a free copy: www.singerco.com/support/instruction-manuals
On pages 64 & 65 are diagrams of the gears & pulley system to give you an idea of how it works.

Hello! How are you? Could you tell me what kind of shank has this machine? I want buy a snap on foot adapter and it says low shank... Do you know if this model has a low shank? Please, I'll be waitin' for your answer. Thank you!
Sonia, yes it is a "low" or "straight" shank sewing machine. You can use "Snap-on" feet or individual feet that attach with the thumbscrew. Here are examples: www.sewingpartsonline.com/singer-457-stylist-sewing-machine-parts.aspx?sort.ss_cat_sort=desc&index=1
