I mean they didn’t really. Look up Blues From the Rainforest. Merl was also the first person to give Jerry his guitar to start practicing after his coma.
It's just the name that those 5 musicians chose to name there band at that time....There was also Reconstruction, and of course JGB along with numerous acoustic incarnations that Jerry played in.
