    I fell in to the trap of treating college like high-school, and my 1st was year gave me a D+, C+, and another C-. I'm a Math major so sometimes, these courses are heavily curved but the speed at which information is taught gives you no room for air. I forced to memorize, memorize, and memorize rather than learn.

      @Childborn1 it is a common trap, one that I experienced as well, so you are in good company here. If you have valid reasons to be concerned about your gpa you could consider taking a few of those classes again to boost your gpa. I’d be hesitant to retake the Cs, but the D+ is a maybe retake only if your gpa matters for your future plans. Alternately if those are math classes and you feel you would have a better comprehensive understanding of your field as a result of a retake that’s another good rationale which will have the bonus side effect of improving your gpa. What are your long term plans for the major? Happy to chat more about it.

    Thanks a lot, Sir.
    Can you please make a video on course load per semester. Is there any impact of heavy/light course load on my grad application after bachelor?

    • @dr.maples
      @dr.maples  2 года назад

      @Habib Mezbah certainly! That's something I talk about with my students as well: we have to find that balance between too few hours and too many while we're in college. Early semesters it can be better to aim for 4-5 classes so you have time for getting socialized on campus and doing well. Once you are in the second half of your degree, you are usually taking lots of courses in your major, and that's when 5-6 hour semesters can be a great idea. I'll put a video together for this in the next few weeks. Thanks!
      On your second graduate student question: I don't think graduate school will care either way. In my experiences, even prestigious research universities are going be more preoccupied with your application materials and potential for future research while a graduate student. They'll consider your GPA as well. Beyond that, the transcript from your undergrad is really just proving you have a bachelor degree. I've never heard anyone talk about course load while a student as there are just bigger things on their minds.
      Thanks for watching!

    What's scaring me is that the reason why I want to maintain a gpa of a 3.4 or higher, is because the University of California, Irvine is asking students to at least have a 3.4 gpa or higher and complete a list of classes before the end of this summer semester in order to guarantee my admission to that university from my community college. I currently have a gpa of 3.5 and am enrolled in a 1 unit class only for summer semester. So I'm trying to get a B or A in the class, but scared if a C will drop my gpa below a 3.4, considering how stressed I am in the class.
    Hopefully the University doesn't pay too close attention to that gpa requirement :(

    • @dr.maples
      @dr.maples  Год назад +1

      So this is a unique case where retaking has a clear purpose. It makes sense to retake it so long as you are confident you can score higher than before. Do you feel like you have the capacity and time to do that? If so this retake makes sense.
      Another angle is they may already just look at your current gpa for that decision to accept your transfer and retaking the class for a higher grade might simply happen after the acceptance happens. There is a lag between transferring a credit and it getting applied to your transcript at the new school. Some colleges are quicker than others. So if you already have the required gpa I bet you’ll be fine either way.
      Keep us in the loop and let me know what you decide!

      @@dr.maples Thank you so much! It does make sense if I should move the class over to Fall Semester or Spring 2024 Semester due to not risking my GPA to fall. By that time, I hope they'll have to accept me as a student, since I'm trying my hardest to not fall below any B grades.

    • @dr.maples
      @dr.maples  Год назад +1

      @@jeycee1617 Yes, that does make sense. You could play things safer and simply wait to take it until the fall or spring semesters. That also means you could take it at your old community college then transfer it in or (if accepted) just take it at UC-I. Good luck on your application!

    First year was a very rough year, failed a lot of course .

    • @dr.maples
      @dr.maples  2 года назад

      @clown face Yeah the first year is truly the hardest year in getting a degree in my experiences. You're still getting used to university schedules and systems, you're taking classes that often are outside your interests, high frequency of core classes like mathematics...it is a perfect storm for failing classes. That's when I see most students experiencing their first failed class. But the great news is that even failing multiple courses can be overcome and it is not the end of the world.

    Can one do another paper in place of the one they failed the first time

    • @dr.maples
      @dr.maples  6 месяцев назад

      That’s a good question. Most likely, yes, you would be expected to submit a different paper if you are retaking the class. I would check with your professor on this. Some professors might allow you to revise and resubmit the previous paper while others would require an entirely new paper.
      I would expect that yes you could do a different paper but to be safe ask your professor to find out their preference.

    I'd like to know if you can retake a class at your previous college that got you a D after transferring to another school.

    • @dr.maples
      @dr.maples  Год назад +1

      Yes, you can do that. All colleges have different policies on retaking a class where you have a passing grade so you may need approval from the dean’s or provost office to retake it. But short answer is yes it is possible.
      Tell me more about your motivation here for retaking this. Unless there’s a requirement (like you needed a C instead of a D) I generally discourage retaking classes you passed (and I am assuming your current college considers a D a passing grade as most do). Be happy to chat more about this! Thanks for watching the channel.

      @dr.maples thank you so much, Professor Maples for answering my question.
      I'm an aduly student now trying to finish off my undergraduate. I then aim to go to a graduate school, preferably an Ivy school. This is the reason I want to see if I can retake the class to improve my GPA for better chance to get in.

    • @dr.maples
      @dr.maples  Год назад

      You have a great point here. You have a clear reason for retaking: to improve your odds of grad school acceptance. It makes sense so long as you have the capacity for getting a better grade the second time. Thanks for watching! Please share the channel with others so we can work together to help them too! (Also ignore that comment I originally posted and deleted if you happen to get a notification about that. It was on a similar question but I was replying to the wrong comment lol.)

    But what about a satisfactory grade but I still retake it, but failed instead in the second time?

    • @dr.maples
      @dr.maples  Год назад

      That’s an excellent question. I’d expect your advisor can petition to count the passing grade from the previous class. Once you get credit for passing a class you don’t lose that even in a retake I’d expect, but it’s something your advisor would likely have to request as the systems that track student credits today probably only look at the most recent grade. So I’d start there before you take it a third time. If you can get that previous credit to count, I likely would not suggest retaking a third time either unless there’s a really great reason to do so.
      Thanks for watching! Please share the channel with your friends. let us know what you find out from your advisor on this.

    1.So I failed a class,
    2.my gpa is very low

    • @dr.maples
      @dr.maples  2 года назад

      @clown face Since you are at the start of your college career, this is an especially good time to retake some/all of those classes to boost your gpa. In my experience, I'd estimate that first year is when most students will fail a class. Since you're likely taking mostly general education classes then, it can be a good time to retake those failed courses. Thanks for subscribing!
