I have been stenciling for two years, mostly on wood, fabric and now trying canvas. No one has ever mentioned that the stencils are beveled!! This may explain why I can use the same stencil and sometimes it comes out great and sometimes it's smudged. THANK YOU!! I am taking a new class in January, signed up for Mixed Media and I am really looking forward to it. Thank you for a very nice introduction to mixed media. I will be looking for more of your videos.
Thank you so much France, I really really enjoyed watching you create this pretty card, and how to use stencils properly. Please stay safe and well too xxxx Mags ❤❤❤❤
I don’t think I’ve ever heard anyone explain that stencils are actually beveled cuts!! Wow-that makes a lot of sense as to why your media sometimes bleeds underneath the cut, even when being super careful. Thanks so much!!
I know this video is a year old, but I just came across it. I’ve been using stencils for years and never knew about the upside and downside. Thank you for such wonderful information. I love your videos. Stay safe and well.
I had no idea about the cutting and been using them and homemade ones for decades..doing walls..collages...mixed media...lol..sure explains a lot .THANKS..
I have seen so many stencil tutorials and this is the first time that I learned about the wrong side and right side of the stencil. Thank you for sharing your time and talent with us.
France ... I recently watched an interview you did a few years ago where you discussed your accident and how you got into mixed media. What a lovely, talented and inspiring lady you are. You are so talented and make everything you do look so easy. You are a great teacher. Watching your videos is somehow soothing ... love your voice. Thank you so much for sharing.
What GREAT tips! I had no idea there was an up and down side to stencils. That alone is going to better my chance for a cleaner sharper pattern. Thanks SO much!
This was so helpful & informative. I'm going to try all of them after dinner! And your voice is so calm & comforting. I'm definitely saving this video in my Stenciling Techniques playlist. Thanks for sharing with your butterflies!
Great video and what a relief that I wasn't incompetent after all! 😆 Thank you so much and I took note of some of your cool stencils I'd like to have. Peace and Blessings from Texas USA 🌹❤ 🌹
Thank you! I appreciate your comments on How to use stencils. I like to use 2 shades of one colour (1st & 2nd generation stamping) on stencils & add a silhouette. Very pleasing results. I will mark my stencils as you recommended! Gr8 tips. Happy 2023! 🦋 from Australia 🦘🦘🦘🦘🦘🦘
Sometimes common sense is not so common - i am refering to myself. i just grab the stencil and lay it down /sometimes lucky sometimes not. thank you so much for this and making the adorable card.
Awesome! I appreciate having a little more info about using stencils and you are the BEST teacher! Thanks! You have some cool stencils...guess I'll have to check them out.
Oh this was great and so informative! Now I have to go back and check the fronts and backs of my stencils!! My first learning hurdle with stencils was to not have a heavy hand with how much product I use!! Investing in the little daubers has helped me a lot (for me they've had better help with controlling how much paint I'm picking up than makeup sponges).
I just subscribed! Thank you so very much for taking the time and energy to share your talent, knowledge, and wisdom with us! It's much appreciated and applauded! Please keep them coming!
OMG 😳 this is fantastic information, I never knew this. This definitely is a game changer❣️ Thank you for sharing this. I’m sure those of that have found this fabulous tutorial will be able to improve our stencil use 🥰😍😘
This is my first time commenting something although I’ve watched many, many of your videos simply because I watch them on tv so I can enjoy them more than in a little screen, haha. I wanted to thank you for all you have shared and taught throughout the years, your work is really beautiful and inspiring. This video was really an eye opener for me, like an eureka moment I thought “of course!” and know I know a bit more and will be able to use my stencils in a more efficient way. Thank you again, be well.
Loving your videos, binge watching in Confinement in France. Can you share the maker of these stencils please. From a butterfly to a dragonfly! OK I found the link be.ow, they are yours😇
Thanks very much!!I will try that first time in the morning :-) Kind regards from Holland Update! And then the next morning.... IT WORKED!!! Finally making nice thing with those stencils :-)
Ha. Baby wipes. Spray bottle. Tupperware container for pouring out dirty paint water. I'm a true artist. Lol didn't know there was a top and bottom of a stencil. Thanks!
I bought a set of cheap stencils off of AliExpress to use them in coloring books, they are very thin, and some are very intricate, plus they all have a border, how would you use these type of stencils?
Are those Neocolor II pastels toward the end? I am thinking you might mention it in other videos but I thought I'd ask here. I haven't seen them used like that before. I'm guessing I have a lot to learn from you!!
I saw in another video that they are Neocolors. I forgot to also thank you for the stencil tips! I have just had 2 disasters in a row and I think I probably had it upside down.
Watch this video, then went and picked up the stencil that failed me a few days ago...well look at that: a top and bottom side! Question, what was that yellow strip (tape) you put on the back and then removed to attach/glue the finished card to the black paper? Thank you! 😃
I am confused because first you say the hollow side goes onto the surface (c.4.35), then you say the backside is completely smooth (c. 5.17).... Doesn't' the backside go on the surface? So is it smooth side up or down on surface?
I recently bought a 12 x 12 scrapbook that has refillable pages and I'm using that to store my stencils. It fits those large 12 x 12 stencils and I can store together smaller, similar stencils. The book lies flat or can be stored upright on a shelf. Best storage I've found so far.
I have just broke a very thin line of a brass stencil I bought because I used a fine liner but even 0 .1 is not enough thin for the stencil! Now I realize maybe I should have used wet technique ;-;
Ya know i have sooo many...never knew this..and well...im puahing 80...even with my magnifying glass i cant see it...i learned long ago to embrace the mess...guess i carry on...too bad 60 years ago the internet wasnt around..and u know what..NOT ONE.ART TEACHER I HAD MENTIONED THIS EVER!!!

Aside from the sublime techniques on display, may I compliment your stunning nails in this video, France? 🖤
I don’t think I’ve ever heard anyone explain that stencils are actually beveled cuts!! Wow-that makes a lot of sense as to why your media sometimes bleeds underneath the cut, even when being super careful. Thanks so much!!
Um.... blown away by the "up" and "down" side of the stencil. Never considered that!!! thank you.
I can’t tell you how much I appreciate this tutorial! I’ve struggled and struggled with stencils, but now I see exactly what to do. Thank you so much!
No one has ever explained it as you have! Bravo and merci!
Thank you for the great video
I know this video is a year old, but I just came across it. I’ve been using stencils for years and never knew about the upside and downside. Thank you for such wonderful information. I love your videos. Stay safe and well.
Wow!! I had no clue, wouldn't have thunk to look or see which side went down first. Scrape in one direction, light pressure, right product...ty x 70
I know me neither.
Superb tutorial. Thanks for posting 💜💛💙
I enjoyed watching this video to learn about stenciling for beginners.
I am glad I came across your video. I could not believe I was using it upside down all this time!!
I had no idea about the cutting and been using them and homemade ones for decades..doing walls..collages...mixed media...lol..sure explains a lot .THANKS..

Oh this was great and so informative! Now I have to go back and check the fronts and backs of my stencils!!

And then the next morning.... IT WORKED!!! Finally making nice thing with those stencils :-)
Yee Vee yesss!!! So glad to read this!! 😊😘
Someone on another site suggested putting paper behind the stencil in the binders so you can see the details. Maybe black paper?
Ha. Baby wipes. Spray bottle. Tupperware container for pouring out dirty paint water. I'm a true artist. Lol didn't know there was a top and bottom of a stencil. Thanks!
WHAT ARE THE TWO PENS NEAR THE END YOU USED? lOOKS LIKE POSSIBLY GLUE OR CLEAR PAINT WITH A NEEDLE NOSE POINT
I tried using tiny stencils with acrylic paints and it was a hot mess. Are they supposed to be used with ink and the foam applicators?
I bought a set of cheap stencils off of AliExpress to use them in coloring books, they are very thin, and some are very intricate, plus they all have a border, how would you use these type of stencils?

helpful! and I love your collection of stencils!
France, I live in the states would you be willing to ship your stencil here to Wisconsin?
Watch this video, then went and picked up the stencil that failed me a few days ago...well look at that: a top and bottom side! Question, what was that yellow strip (tape) you put on the back and then removed to attach/glue the finished card to the black paper? Thank you! 😃
That was double sided tape. Easy peasy to use, right? :D www.france-papillon.com/product-page/double-sided-tape
Gorgeous..where does a beginner start??
Completely agree with tellwingz!

Doesn't' the backside go on the surface? So is it smooth side up or down on surface?
What paste are you using...its not listed.. thank you!
I love nothing more than my stencils! I will watch this repeatedly.
Do you have anything on stencil organization?
Liliana not yet Liliana, but I’m working on it 😊
@@francepapillon Good to know, I'll be watching. I admire your work!

That is because I have migrated everything to my own website, with the same type as subscription: www.france-papillon.com
