Ashitaka wasn't allowed to go back to his village after cutting his hair. It's customary that if you cut your hair that you cut ties with your tribe (edit: at least for the Emishi tribe)...which is why the elderly were upset that they had to let him go and why Ashitaka didn't want to mention where he came from either when talking to that rat lol. They're an ethnic tribe that doesn't allow outsiders to the village, and they live peacefully with nature. I think they were chased off by the emperor hundreds of years prior to the movie which is why their location is a secret and only San knows about it because Yakul tells her.

I'll defer to a Japanese historian but I think the Emishi were technically genocided by the emperor for their land...hence the secrecy regarding his origins.

My interpretation :She was very proud of herself being raised by wolves but obviously she is human and she was suffering about that fact
because she loves her family and nature truly.
The scene is depicted like she got shocked and awakened.
She denies herself that she is human (guilty existence)
And there is self doubting maybe
Like all we think and try to define our identity
Otherwise it’s kinda hard to understand that she acknowledges Ashitaka by romantic emotion so instant 🤔but maybe yes maybe no
San does not want the coexistence of men and nature, nor does she symbolize it. For most of the movie, she is a nature-only/nature-first-extremist. She wants to be with the wolves in the forest and wants to kill or at the very least chase away all humans. She hates them. She decides to continue living in the forest because even though she starts to like Ashitaka she still can not live with other humans nor does she want to.
The symbol for peaceful coexistence and the concept of "do not hate anyone" and instead "forgive so a peaceful future is possible" is Ashitaka, who lives with the humans but respects nature.
Basically, you have San on nature's side, Eboshi on humanity's side, and Ashitaka who wants peace between them.
Eboshi and San both learn throughout the movie that their ways are flawed but they still stay on their respective sides, they just adjust slightly for a better future - for themselves, not for the other side.
And don't forget about the emperor, who uses and pressures Eboshi for his own gain. While she just wants the best for her people in the village, the emperor wants the old gods gone for his own greed. And he attacks the village to get control over the iron and gun production.
"because she embodies his ideal of coexistence between nature and humans" she most certainly does not. She represents Wild Nature and that point is reinforced and made clear through the whole movie. Ashitaka is the representation of coexistence, this is also reinforced explicitly throughout the whole movie.
If Mononoke confused you, the boy and the heron will be like an acid trip :D
Oh yh, after watching "boy and the heron" i read lots of articles and reviews and still did not understand some symbols and what Miyazaki wanted to say/show us.

Eboshi abused the forest and built a castle. she then let the oppressed people of human society live there.
I love fascinating villains riddled with contradictions; I'm reminded of Askeladd.
For Ghibli, I highly recommend Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind.

Hell yeah. Nausicaa rocks. And no human is one dimensional. It takes a true writer to balance this in storytelling.

As I grew up, I started to understand Eboshi a little more. She built a safe town where men and women are treated equally, where the wounded and disabled were treated well too, and the samurai/emperor wanted to take it all from her and conquer her village (take all the iron and weapon). She wanted to destroy the forest to expand their village and protect them against the emperor. The ultimate theme of this movie/ghibli is always striking the balance between man and nature and anti war, but this movie did such a great job portraying the complexities. And I absolutely LOVED the scores. Thanks for reacting and discussing it, it def was a profound movie over my upbringing ❤
if we ll try to describe Eboshi. She is responsible for people, honest- because Jiggo helps her with defend and she needs to return this help to Jiggo and fullfill her words. This thing all forgot, when they try to describe and doesnt understand why is she motivated to kill this god. She has got a respect of all in iron town. She is definitely not an evil. she just needs to stay strong in world, which we are living. And one detail. About her, she is talking with ashitake, and ask him, why is he there. And she definitely understood him, because later let she tells, to let him do, what he wants, cause she knows, he is not an enemy for her... Eboshi is good writen person cause she is honest, responsible, empathic and clever person. Well and lot of people don t see that, cause mijazaki didnt need to explain this but show it to us litle bit diferent way. Same as the Jiggo, which is quite calculative person, cause he doesnt want to kill people just take a moment for himself. At start he helps to ashitake, when doesnt know about him. and aswell , he helped to eboshi with defend, so and appel to eboshi to speak with Asano too. he is just calculative person, and thats the reasone need to return heart in the end. Well this movie, is so much great in many ways. And has a lot of points to think... i m really happy, we have got a movie like this.
LET'S GOOOOO! *PRINCESS MONONOKE* is my favourite Anime Movie from Studio Ghibli, I re-watched it last year after so long & it still hit me like the first time 🤌

The bristling hair thing (that characters seem to be affected by a breeze that rustles their hair and clothes) is a Ghibli hallmark that you can find in almost all of their movies. It's their kind of "fingerprint" method of enhancing or representing the emotional states of characters, so you often see it when people are angry or facing a very Big(tm) emotion relevant to the story's plot or that character's developmental journey. Pay attention to when it happens and what's going on plot-wise! It's a fun little exercise once you start noticing it!

Monoke Hime, Princess Mononoke is based on Shinto, Japanese religion. If you don't know about it at all, it might be difficult to understand this movie.
Shinto is polytheism, and its deities are believed to exist in the natural world, such as mountains, rocks, water falls, the sea, the sun, and animals.
There are so many Gods in Mononoke Hime. Okkotonushi is Boar God, Moro is Dog God, and Shishigami is Deer God. In Shinto, deer is considered as the gods' message. Although Shishigami is not the same to a real deer, that's the reason why he/she is the most important God in the movie. And Yakul is similar to deer too.

you caught on to how the humans were not entirely irredeemable, particularly Eboshi, and I love how this film tries to tackle the complexity of human vs nature.
this is basically the film that Avatar wishes it was.
While I don't need to explain the human side's complexity, Its not strange that a lot of reactors and people don't acknowledge the complexities of the Forest's side.
The Gods of the Forests and their subordinates are hardly united, and they're just as vulnerable to infighting as the humans. The Boars were just charging head long, the Wolves were too few to actually help, the Gorillas were willing to eat ashitaka in a fool's attempt to gain his strength. even the original Boar god at the start that ashitaka kills isn't innocent, he is shown leading his boars slaughtering the Humans cutting down wood in the forest. there was no discussion no negotiation from what we know, they just kill them all outright.
and lastly of all the Deer God. no one talks about how he literally does nothing to protect the forest. and It makes sense why he doesn't because as ashitaka points out, he's life itself, he's nature, all the wild and beautiful parts of it.
Nature doesn't care about the weak like Humans do, Nature doesn't care about morality as humans do, nature is simply nature. and the deer god acts as such. he let's both Moro and Okoto die in front of him while he saves ashitaka from death. Nature is the most impartial thing in the world.
I could go on and on more about this, but i'd just like to add one last thing, Eboshi isn't dumb, she was playing politics, she didn't want to kill the Deer God, her plan was so much more better (killing the forest by slowly cutting it down causes no war, it just lets the Gods become normal animals again over time which ultimately is better than the war they went through in the climax), but the Emperor, Jigo (the rat), and Lord Asano were literally pushing her into a corner forcing her to go with Jigo's dumb plan to kill the forest god, and for what? money? Jigo was literally just greedy, while Lord Asano wanted the Iron to conquer everyone.
at the end she refused to listen to all of Ashitakas warnings because hey guess who's with her? oh yeah, just that one loyal dude, and she and him are both surrounded by hundreds of Jigo's Hunter Lackey's. she's basically a hostage at that end part, they're forcing her to do the dirty workso that they don't get cursed by the gods. All she wanted was to empower the women she freed, and the Lepers that she's watching over, allow them to be able to use weapons like the samurai to defend their own independence.
God I love this movie and I'm glad you guys enjoyed it.

Ooh, what a great analysis! I love that you also included the point of the cruelty and selfishness that's also seen on the side of nature. Animals don't heal their sick and wounded; humans do. While the Forest is wild and impartial, humans can't help caring about others. It's why Eboshi is shown to protect people who are oppressed and subjugated, and why San warms up to Ashitaka after she sees how loyal Yakul, an animal, is to his human master. To me, I feel like this is why San, the middle ground between nature and humankind, is still shown to have painfully human responses to things--she's the angriest and most vengeful out of all other gods and spirits, she's the one who tries to suck the "bad blood" out of Moro after her wolf mother is shot, she fights in the battle because she can't bear watching Okoto die in vain or be tricked and wants to help him, etc. etc.
At long last. Once you go Studio Ghibli you never go back
Understand that Eboshi is a two sided character, having qualities and flaws. She had to go for the deer god because she was pressured by neighboring warlords, hence the invasion on her ironwork. Iron is an extremely rare resource is japan and guns = power, esp the capacity to create them. Her only escape, as she sees it, is through imperial authority through favor with the emperor. What she does, she does for what she thinks is right, and most of all for the iron work and all the people she shelters. She's not evil. She just doesn't have much of a choice. Such is life.
Fun fact: mononoke refers to a phenomenon in Shintoism and common trope in Japanese literature where a person is possessed by a vengeful spirit. The people of Ironworks call San Princess Mononoke because they think she's been possessed by an angry wolf spirit. Meanwhile, the wolves and San herself never refer to her this way because they know she isn't actually possessed
I loved it when at the beginning they said "hey, he's going to find his princess" and I thought "well, the princess is going to surprise you" jajaja.
It is a complex film, like life, but with a clear message: development cannot involve ending the world in which we live, because that will end life.
Isn't it nice when the storytelling and storyteller doesn't treat the audience like their stupid?

One thing to remember about Miyazaki is that he's a pacifist and an environmentalist, and believes that no one is black or white, everyone is shades of gray. There are some amazing videos essays out there that dive into the nuances of his characters and movies that I'd highly recommend. Also Im glad you liked the score again, Joe Hisaishi for the win!
The coolest thing about Lady Eboshi is how morally gray and nuanced her character is. Her rejection and disregard toward tradition and custom is why she is so lacking in consideration and respect for the spirits and gods of nature and is the reason for her ignorance toward their importance in maintaining the balance of nature - something she seems to forget humans are indeed still a part of.
However, this resistance toward custom, rules, and tradition is also exactly what makes her such an incredibly innovative and progressive leadership figure. It’s also the reason behind her tolerance and compassion for the shunned and marginalized groups of society (like the lepers and girls she’d saved from sex trafficking throughout the years) - all of which were very atypical for a person, let alone a woman, of her era. Her intelligence and progressiveness really is a double edged sword. I love every scene with her just because of how charismatic and refreshing she is as a character. She’s one of those antagonists who you can’t help but like.

Which, considering the compromise between humans, gods, and the nature inbetween them Ashitaka is trying to go for, that in of itself makes Eboshi an enemy of Ashitaka's persued goal. Whether the term "morally grey" refers to the morals of those who do things that are only sort of bad or those who do both very good and very bad things is likely a topic still up for debate. In addition, considering how from an outsider's perspective (one who's watching the movie) Eboshi's actions seem all over the place in terms of the good/evil spectrum, I can say with quite some certainty that Eboshi's own perspective is highly skewed towards her own village. She is very much the type of person who places her focus on things only after she's sure it's worth her time, that's one thing I can be sure of regardless.
This movie is what made me a fan of anime.
When I was like 13 I woke up at 2am with this movie playing on YTV (Canada). The scenes of the infected Boar and the Forest God blew my mind.
But I never knew the name of the movie until years after

Mine was spirited away like 10 years ago but it traumatised me😂 but I watched it recently and it wasn't so bad.
If you enjoyed the particular ambiance and narrative/tone setting of Mononoke Hime, you'll also surely admire "Nausicaä Of The Valley Of The Wind" from 1984, which is technically not a Ghibli film per say as it's Hayao Miyazaki's first original motion picture as director/screenplay writer+animator, and it shares a lot of common themes with Mononoke Hime (the nature/society dynamics). It's also an adaptation of a manga series, which he created and published for decades, literally. If I'm not mistaken it only got concluded a few years ago.
Oh, and MASSIVE kudos for actually watching the movie in its original language, I've the greatest pet peeve against dubs in general as there's always just too much of the original dialogues, characters' identities, subtleties and symbolism which gets lost in dubbed versions, but anyway, many thanks for watching it in japanese!
studio ghibli movies sound really good dubbed, too. they often have a lot of celebrity voice actors
I knew Carter ,specifically, was going to absolutely love this one. It has everything that he loves from the pacing to the character development and the incredible score. After Boy and the Heron, I think ya'll (and again ,specifically Carter) would really enjoy Nausicaa. It's another older Ghibli but its in my Top 3 of the studio, with Mononoke being my number 1.
I did indeed absolutely love this movie. Nausicaa is now very high on my list to watch!

I also feel like the rumbling in AOT & the imagery in the episode declaration of war is a little reminiscent of the god warriors from nausicaa (I might be crazy, but I feel like it might’ve been inspired a little by nausicaa) just something interesting to look out for if they do end up watching it
This show was ahead of its time! It’s a social commentary about the impact of deforestation and man’s impact on earth

子供の頃、正直内容はあまり理解していなかったけど、戦争、自然破壊、人種差別がテーマになっている事に気づいて ジブリの中で一番好きな作品になりました😭 「風の谷のナウシカ」も考えさせられる作品なので、ぜひお勧めですよ👍
Nausicaa was amazing. This movie is also amazing. I love them both. I saw Mononoke for the first time as a child. I saw Nausicaa for the first time during college. I was equally astounded each time.

This movie was my childhood movie for me and my brothers, I remember childhood days that I spent with my brothers, but now everything has changed. We are no longer what we were. I miss that gathering. We have grown and the burdens of life have grown, but we are no longer We find time to get together. I wish those golden days would come back one day.

Princess Mononoke is my favorite movie ever. I haven’t even watched the video but I’m so happy, for one of my first english college papers, i wrote about this movie and the themes of survival, hate and revenge. Since then, I’ve just completely fallen in love with it.

I remember watching this movie when I was in 7th grade and being unable to grasp the theme of the movie.
Recently, I rewatched it and got complicated feelings. My major is forestry, so I started thinking about this movie from a whole new perspective. Loved how the movie portrayed human vs forest/nature.
Well, I can say that this is a really special movie to me.
Yes! Y'all finally reacted to this! I was not expecting an anime movie reaction today. I'm pretty sure this is my favorite Ghibli movie, most of them are varying degrees of amazing, but this one just holds a special place in my heart. Probably because it was first Ghibli movie and I think my first anime movie too. I was like 10 when I watched it and it scared me quite a bit 😂, but I grew to appreciate it more after rewatching it when I was older. I'm really glad y'all enjoyed it so much!
One of my favorite movies ever. My grandma showed me this movie when I was young and left a big impact on me. I actually dreamed of her last night which is crazy. I play the score of this movie whenever I miss her 💙

I love how you kept mentioning the cell drawings. This movie was a big deal when it came out since it was the first Ghibli movie to use CGI for the background frames instead of it being all hand drawn (i think it was something like 50% of background frames had CGI involvement). Animation production techniques have come a long way since those days. Also, English translation call her Princess because her title was "hime", it's not princess per se but a beautifying title for a woman, often for high class women, such as princess and daughters of aristocrats, or if someone is a beauty. Its really a translational choice of convenience.
Yes! James Cameron said that Avatar drew inspiration from other movies with similar themes, and Princess Mononoke was one of them :)! Knowing that, you can actually find lots of similarities between the movies

OMG, I just remembered. I recommend to watch "Laputa" (Castle in the Sky)! It is an older studio ghibli movie back in the 1986. One of my favorites.
I’m Japanese and I’m really happy that you all reaction to this movie not only because もののけ姫 is my favorite, but also you guys watched with Japanese audio.
I sometimes get sad when people watch it with other language, it’s ok but to be honest, original voice are better. Especially the voice of Moro(San’s mother) makes me chill when I here her deep and calm voice yet considering humans to be as foolish
20:22 hatred, as it does in real life, can help you to survive in certain circumstances, as a key motivation, but it will kill you eventually. I think that’s what this symbolizes.
You guys are in for a treat! This has been my favorite film since I turned 13! Why? Because it was the first PG-13 film I was ever allowed to see on my own!! This is a true animated gem!

Ghibli scores are amazing. Majority of films are composed by Joe HIsaishi. I actually just saw Joe in person in Chicago and he played his whole score of princess mononoke. It’s an amazing music score and the movie my favorite 🤩

クレヨンしんちゃんの「あっぱれ戦国大合戦」と「大人帝国の逆襲」もすごい映画だから見てほしいなあ。日本人から人気あります。

The movie is about environmentalism. Its about can humans and nature coexist without disrupting and destroying our natural resources into obsoletion. Along with that it is happening during a social political climate where the Samurai and Emperor are in power and Lady Eboshi has helped many brothel women and the sickly to find salvation in Iron town as she rebels against the Emperor. A Masterpiece of complex characters really.
Here in Germany they showed it again briefly in the cinema.Even though he has a few years behind him, it was wonderful to see him in the cinema.

懐かしい。調べたら27年前！学生の頃に母と映画館へ観に行ったな。テーマがとても深くて好きです。自然との共存、病気、差別。
ちなみにたたら場で作っているのは玉鋼。玉鋼は鬼滅の刃で刀の材料にもなってます。今でも作っている所がありますよ。
タタラ場は世間からはみ出した人達の集まりで、でもタタラ場の中でさえも差別意識があるんですね。ジブリは大人になってわかることが多いです。
このアニメは、私が幼い頃から何度も見てきました。
歳を重ねる度に、この作品の見え方が変わっていきます。
大人になった今見ても、深いメッセージが込められた名作だと思います。
Gotta watch Nausicaa next. That and Mononoke are my favorites.
The English dub for this is so good, some well known people doing the voice acting. Plus the English dub narrative changes the girl at the beginning to be his little sister instead.
矢で両腕や首を飛ばす場面は驚く。他にもアシタカは故郷にはもう二度と戻れないとかカヤと許嫁だったとか玉の小刀を渡すことの重大さとか
解説聞かないとわからない設定も多いから是非背景も後で調べてくれるといいな。

Let’s go my second favorite Ghibli movie first Nausicaa , I’ve only seen Ghibli movies in sub once every other time, it’s been a dub and the only time I’ll accept dub cause they have goated voice actors though both are very enjoyable
@@coltonmay_ Nausicaa is not a Ghibli Movie, it is a Miyazaki film but from studio Topcraft + it even came out before Studio Ghibli was created!
Well I watched The Boy and The Heron, now I guess gotta watch Princess Mononoke, tbf I've had it on my watch list for months now 😅

The antler of the deer god is probably inspired by Eucladoceros. The face is inspired by Myotragus and the giant deer god is a japanese mythological Yokai called Daidarabotchi.
I recommend Nausicaa! If you like Princess Monoke, and AoT in a way, Nausicaa although 40 years-old, is still relevant and breathtaking! My favorite!

I've seen both of them so much that I can still recite the lines.
Growing up I used to watch a Studio Ghibli movie every weekend. It was when I was a bit younger around 8 so I would constantly rewatch either Howls moving castle or Spirited away. When i became a young adult, I found myself rewatching the more mature and thematic films such as Mononoke or Nausicaa. I'm so happy to get to rewatch this with yall!!!
My favorite film EVER is Spirited Away, but Howl's and Princess Mononoke are in my top 5 of Ghibli films (Ponyo is in there too).
I think this is why I love Miyazaki, it's how much he loves nature. If we do not coexist peacefully with it, eventually, that will be our unmaking. I love how he talks about human greed. Idk, Ghibli films just hit different. He's the one who made me want to be an artist and who made me want to animate 2d.
